Grant Morrison's Action Comics is a brilliant reimagining of Golden Age Superman at first, a social crusader of sorts who is rough around the edges but ultimately noble of heart. Its also a nice reminder to people about his roots as a borderline belligerent superhero to the corrupt/evil, as opposed to smiling caricature that people expect him to be. The transition from the stripped down t-shirt Superman to the more Silver Age, sci-fi Superman with the Kryptonian armor is a cool in-story weaving of the different Golden Age ethos and Silver Age ethos of the character. And the 5th Dimension timespace distortion and the brilliant Vyndktvx whose presence is there since the beginning of the run - you either like it or not, but the effect of entities who exist "more than you" in more dimensions, is a mindtingling narrative and no one does it better than Morrison. And the Krypto bit - how can a doggo lover not just absolutely love that? A gold spot in the otherwise forgettable/edgy New 52. The DCEU would benefit from Morrison as its architect over Johns.
I admire your attention to detail on a writer, who grew up in a protest/activist of sorts upbringing which is grant. His household helped mold his writing style in which I enjoy😎
This was the first Superman comic I ever read back in 2011 and it’s one of my favorite runs
Morrison wrote these comics before man of steel, so i would assume that movie took some inspiration from this.
Yes it did
Love Grant Morrison's work.
Thanks for the review. It's no fun being confused or having to flip back to figure out what's going on.
Love the format and review. Thank Gem!
Been wanting to read the new 52 superman run. The fact that there are not many superman omnibuses is crazy though..
rebirth run cant go wrong 10/10
It's really frustrating as a Superman fan. The first super-powered hero in comic books; the progenitor to all of Marvel and DC, and (other than the golden-age omnis), they only give him Exile omni, the worst run in Superman history omni (this book), and the Death and Return which is perpetually out of print.
We need a New Krypton saga omni, A John Byrne Superman OMNI, Greg Rucka's Adventures of Superman omni, and Dan Jurgens omni for SURE.
Yea no kidding man I’m still waiting for an Omnibus of Geoff Johns entire Superman run
@@WhoniverseReview Don't forget a Curt Swan omni. I'm not a fan of artist-specific omni's, but for Swan, I'd buy it in a heartbeat 😉[as long as they don't pull a Neil Adams Batmanibus/Alan Moore Swamp Thing Absolutes and choose to recolor the originals for 'modern audiences']
A good review Gem! I appreciate your detail analysis!
Might want to check your Silver Surfer Omni, too. After you did your review, many folks noticed many printing errors.
Okay I’m half way in this book. I’m glad you put this out. Because some of it had me like wtf. Like the dinosaur hunter. Lol that and I Didn’t realize the ship was talking. 😂 ok now I can finish this with it making more sense. Oh by the way I spent like $500 on JP auction but won me the Punisher omnibus by G.E and S.D.
I was in that auction too haha
Love these omni reviews.
This video was amazing gem! I’m definitely going to pick this up now 🤞💎 best reviewer on RUclips
The whole multiple timelines and dimensions thing Morrison does is really confusing the first time through. I feel like you have to read anything he writes more than once to get it. Maybe that is a good thing though if you want to get more out of what you buy. I pick up on so many new things each time I read one of his runs.
I think the more frustrating Morrison trademark is when the story builds up to something happening, but it happens "off screen," or rather, between panels. The entire Morrison Green Lantern run does that repeatedly.
So which supes story would u recommend to people then? I loved this run but ya hard to recommend to new comic readers idk. Probably throw them all star first.
Okay, now the new 52 SWAMP THING next homie!!!!! U will love it!
Thanks for another great review! 🙂
My all-time favorite superman run ❤❤❤
Awesome video as always Gem 💎
Haven't read this one but I've heard heard so much about it. Thanks for doing a flip though of it! Anyone else a fan of this run?
ill put it on my list at the bottom though as a one day but no time soon
I took a chance on this book, since my Superman collection is pretty light. I really liked the Morales art. The story was good, even though it was sometimes hard to follow. Overall I found it to be enjoyable.
The art is rlly cool
Awesome job gem
Just bought this. Im not really a superman guy but I am a new 52 guy so I hope we can get some more superman new 52 omnis.
I love that Supes throughout his entire existence has remained the same
These new 52 run are very compelling to me! Aquaman and Batman were very fun, and this Superman run seems much the same! I'm heavily considering it...
Also Animal Man and Swamp Thing runs were fantastic. There are some very underrated New52 stories 😢
You'd be in the minority of liking the New 52 run. Most people did not like it (I quit buying DC altogether until the Rebirth era), and it was dubbed "PU 52". You're better off finding a discount copy because you will feel like you're out a lot of cash after reading it
@@murrayc9615 what are talking about Aquaman , Batman, green lantern were 10/10 in new 52
On my "to get list" for sure!!
Morrison & Quitely's All-Star Superman was phenomenal. Morrison's Action Comics run was boring to begin with and mundane to end with. Thanks for the honest review Gem Mint!
Haven't cracked this one open yet but I'll get to it lol
Great analysis.
Love Superman but haven’t liked many runs. Tomasi and Gleason’s run was great, BMB run shall not be spoken of, and I’m enjoying PKJ’s Action Comics. I stopped collecting this in single issue pretty early. Good review!
nice review gem
Love the new thumbnail
Pretty cool!
Gonna be reading Superman by Tomasi any Gleason next? If you haven’t read it
Edit: it’s been dope to see you working through your dc omnibus would love to see more of these 💪🏼
I should read some Sups stories. So hard for me to get into.
Still haven't read much DC so I love these videos. I get a pretty good understanding of a pretty good story that I probably wouldn't have read.
Well gem....what superman run should I read?
Everyone says Tomasi… I need to read that next
That steel costume reminds me of X-O Man o war armor
Another awesome video done by you I like this book Superman and I hope you and all your family members are having a wonderful day including your friends another awesome video
Great review! You should read the rebirth Superman omnibus (Tomasi/Gleason). It’s a lot more enjoyable than this I think
superman by tomasi & gleason omnibus is the best run as of recent.
bro do the hellblazer omnibus!
Haha. Like Morrison work it was a bit confusing🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣 so true
Cowabunga Geminites 🤙 150k here we come 👊
Morrison made some of my favorite comic runs of all time (All-Star Superman, Doom Patrol, Batman, New X-Men, etc), but Morrison is also responsible for two runs that are among my least favorite comics I've ever read (N52 Action, The Green Lantern).
I was thinking about picking up All Star Superman to try it out so I’m glad I found a comment saying it’s good😂🙌🙌
@@jakester1115 I hope u got the deluxe edition of All Star it’s definitely a great format to own that story in and yes I’d also like to add that it’s a great story and I love it dearly
@@alejandrogonzalez9840 I did indeed end up getting the deluxe edition and I see why it’s so highly regarded, super good and the book looked fantastic🤌🔥💯
@@jakester1115 sweet dude and yeah Frank Quietly’s art is something else that’s really great
@@jakester1115 loved Green lantern.
I agree with your review. This book was alright, but was needlessly confusing and didn’t even have any major revelations after all the confusion. Morrison dropped the ball on this series.
DC editorial during the N52 era didn't help as well. According to Gail Simone Editors discouraged writers from even talking to each other about their work.
I'm not sure if I'm going to read this
Gem, can you sell statues on Whatnot and do they charge fees like Ebay?
Yes and yes. I think fees are less
@@GemMintCollectibles Okay boom, I’ll test it out. Thanks Gem! ✌🏾
I know i'm hella late with this. But i just watched this review. I totally agree with you, Morrisons Superman run, was a bit confusing and at the same time boring to me. It wasn't bad but also not very good. Greets from a german comic fan !
Funny enough this book just got delivered to me last Friday lol. Appreciate the feedback 💎.
I got vol 1 of the hardcover at a thrift store for 50cents a few years ago and i hated it. I thought it was one of the worst stories ive read in a long time. Hearing your review made me think it gets better further into the run. But im not a fan of the character other than the death and return of superman so maybe this run ain"t for me lol
looks good
When i saw the cover i thought this was down to earth re-imagining of Superman and i was looking forward to buy and read this, but then i found out as you said, it goes very Morrisoney and lost all interest.
I enjoyed the first 3rd of this book then I got completely lost and had no idea what the hell was happening!
Right
So i never read any Superman, what would you guys recommend then if not this omni?
I'd recommend checking out Supermans Rebirth run by Tomasi
The Man of Steel by Byrne
Wouldn’t recommend this one
all star superman by grant morrison and whatever happened to the man of tomorrow? by alan moore
Love Grant Morrison. :)
Its a good run .
Hated it, I was disappointed. There needs to be more Superman Omni’s
I hope RUclips sends you all the money and the algorithm works in your favor.
Station Swoll Mint!
I remember disliking the look of him with the jeans, I really hated the look haha.
I miss New52 Superman.
After reading Morrison's All star Superman this was a let down.
Thought this run was pretty average to be honest. Felt like Morrison didn’t really have anything left to say about the character after all star Superman. I used to really like Morrison but as I’ve gotten older the seemingly intentional confusing story telling has gotten annoying. I just want a good easy to follow story.
Comment for giveaway
I truly appreciate Grant Morrison, though I don't think I've read much by them that I enjoyed. I wasn't reading comics at this time but I don't think I would enjoy this. Still quite happy i missed the New 52.
Morrison after batman has disappointed. But I mean the man put 20 years of great work in, so I won't criticize too much.
He wrote Multiversity. That was Great
tee shirt supes
GRNMINTSŠSssss
Yeah, this run is not a priority for me. That is kid Superman not the real one haha.
Glad I didn't let FOMO get me. Didn't even buy it.
Geoff John's and Gary Frank Superman Secret Orgins and Brainiac is what I recommend people start with when reading Superman.
I read some of this when it came out - pretty forgettable, tbh.
He did some fire work on Batman and X-Men but I ain’t read anything else.
Awesome review 🙂 moon knight trailer is out check it out
I’ve never been a fan of any mainstream super-hero stuff by Morrison (and I have tried). He knows how to write, understands characters, and he has an obvious love of comic book history, which should be a sure-fire recipe for success… but I find that his mainstream super-hero stuff just plain lacks excitement.
I like a lot of his Vertigo-esque stuff, but this kind of stuff just bores me to death.
It tries too hard to be the new Batman: Year One and only manages to become a forgettable non-canon fanfic.
Morrison is overrated...and this run proves it
Everything Morrison does is hit or miss.
His Action Comics and pre New 52 Batman runs were a MISS (but props to him for introducing Damien Wayne).
His New X-Men was WAY better, and I'm not a MARVEL guy.
Morrison's run on Superman sucked, it was confusing and all over the place, he is an overrated writer.
I'll check this volume thanks... Could you suggest me a very recent story about DC multiverse? I love Multiversity and I struggle to find something similar 🙏🦸💎
Thank you for your honesty, you just saved my some money! :D Keep up with the great content and honest reviews!
