@@23jimble, I’ve seen some studios use SM57’s as overheads and they don’t sound bad at all. Personally, I like a pair of large diaphragm condensers, but SM57’s still sound good too.
@Sweetwater, one idea that my band used was we wanted a subkick, but didn’t have one. So, what I did was I disconnected my speaker from my amp, wired up a cable to the speaker and turned it into a subkick that mixed well with the dynamic kick mic. I also used a pair of guitar stands and duct tape to mic up 2 ribbon mics for room mics.
i’m breaking the rules too! I have a Sennheiser MKE2 (omni directional Lavalier condenser) floating just above the kick drum as a mono drumset mic. it is perfect for capturing the whole kit in a confined space (small church)!
I have a pair Stellar RM-3 Ribbon mics. They are basically Royer-121, made in China knock offs. My old boss found me the pair with cases. $200 dollars for the pair. Couldn't pass up the deal. I figured they wouldn't be anything special but I have to say I think they sound awesome. I use a Shure Beta-52a right inside the port hole and the Stellar ribbon mic outside the kick about 2-3 inches away from the resonate drum head kind of like the setup in this video. I was using a SM57 as my second bass drum mic but just switched back to the ribbon because like I said it just has a really awesome sound that really has great clarity with the low end. Very natural sounding as well.
I tried using my 121 at a 45 degree angle on the kick after seeing it being used that way on a SW video. Sounds fantastic added to the inside batter mic. Sort of makes the kick kind of 3d sounding. For kicks, try it basically in the center of a 1x12 guitar cab about 10-12" away and tell me that doesn't sound a whole lot like what the amp sounds like in the room. I might also note that mine has some rattle in it and needs to be fixed. :(
Thanks for watching another installment of Breaking the Audio “Rules”! 🤘 What rule should we test out next?

Make everyone listen to a click track to make sure the drummer does not have theirs turned down .
Put some intresting effects on sub and master track, like reverb/chorus/ping pong delay/etc...
Sweetwater board: “We’re not selling enough ribbon mics.”
Mitch: “Hold my guitar pick.”

LETS GO!! SWEETWATER is simply the best 💯

Verry cool. How about panning the more poppy sound of the Ribben to another channal for a nifty stereo effect to the drum.

I'm a fan of trying anything to record my drums. This is something I might not have thought of....
The sound reminds me a lot of Silk Sonic's latest album. Was this technique used in the 60's/70's Motown era?
Helpful Tips from the Pro👍👍
very nice job keep it up you are the best
The sensitivity of the the mic is 8.5 mv. What preamp did you use? I find at times it can be too much for some of my preamps.
What sorcery is this?? Lol well Ya know what they say about rules.. 😁
Always loved this combo on cabs but on kick it’s really nice. Awesome!
Do this with a Shure KSM313 please: the Roswellite ribbon is indestructible.
Who's making all these rules?
😎👍💗🇺🇸🥁NICK!!!
