  • How to make a Roman styled fantasy helmet. Free templates also available!
    I got the idea for this project from some Roman helmets and it's more a prop than real armor. The top part of the helmet is made from two parts which I shaped by dishing them with a dishing stump. The helmet has also cover for the neck and cheeks. It has a decorative skull face for face armor and even tiny pieces to protect your ears. The helmet is fully wearable with some padding inside of it. It’s made mostly from 1,5 mm steel and it's meant for decoration or as a cosplay prop item. If you haven't build armor before then a helmet is a great way to start. If you want, you can try to make this prop from foam too.
    I blued the helmet steel to make it darker since I've made many shiny armors, but you can skip the bluing part and leave the helmet shiny and metallic. I also used some “repoussé and chasing” techniques on the plate that is on the forehead. I guess it’s not real repoussing since I used a very thin brass plate, but it’s very easy to do it this way.
    For more details just ask in the comment section. Hope you like it!

      I could yeah. I've made one pair of gauntlets before (shown in my profile picture) and I might make new ones with a different design. Maybe foot armor too if I come up with some cool design.

    Hey I love your work! I was wondering, how do you cover up the nuts and bolts? You said riveting, but this is my first helmet so I’m a bit new, could you explain further?

    • @GarageKnight
      @GarageKnight  3 года назад +1

      Thank you, glad to hear it! Ah yes I only use nuts and bolts as a temporary way to attach the pieces, so I don't cover them in anyway but actually remove them completely and replace them with rivets. To way I do it is shown shortly in 14:10. You'll see that I still have the nuts and bolts in place, but I remove them one by one and replace them with rivets.
      For riveting you need a riveting block (or dapping block) or a riveting punch I used there. Riveting itself is quite easy, just cut the rivet to appropriate length (like in video) and then hit the edges of the rivet to "mushroom" it. You can see the riveting better in my new viking shield video for example (this video got so long so I showed it quite briefly here). I hope this helped, just ask if I didn't explain it well enough

    What are the advantages to Stell and Aluminium would you say? Is there any other metals you work with.
    Sorry for all the comments, I just discovered your channel and I am binge watching all your videos because they are so enjoyable.

    • @GarageKnight
      @GarageKnight  2 месяца назад +1

      No problem I'm glad to answer and help out and nice to hear to hear you like my channel! I have worked mostly with steel and also with copper and brass. I have tried aluminium but it's pretty soft compared to steel. But it's also easier to work with, so it does have that advantage. Copper and brass are also more soft than steel, but not as soft as aluminium, and copper and brass make good decorative pieces!

    • @XxKINGatLIFExX
      @XxKINGatLIFExX 2 месяца назад

      @@GarageKnight Thanks for your comment! Do you treat the steel with anything to stop it corroding or do you buy it pre-treated?

    • @GarageKnight
      @GarageKnight  2 месяца назад +1

      @@XxKINGatLIFExX I use simple steel polishing paste to prevent corrosion, it also gives a nice shine. My builds haven't corrored at all, brass can get a bit darker, but you can polish it again anytime you want.
      Of course, if you use them outside and they get exposed to dirt and water, then you need to clean them. Many people who larp etc, use some kind of oil to keep the rust away.
      And I suggest you only use simple mild steel that hasn't been treated in any way. Some metals like zinc-plated steel will release toxic fumes if you heat treat them or might release small particles even from just hitting them with hammer. So always research the stuff you are going to use.
