Stevie Ray never wrote or sang a bad song. The day before he was killed, he told his band members that he had a nightmare that he was dead and he could see all the mourners at his funeral. He said it terrified him, but it was very peaceful. The last thing he said when he boarded the helicopter was, "I love y'all". I'm a Texan, too, born and bred. I wonder why if he had that dream he would still get on board the helicopter. Oftentimes those dreams are warnings, just like certain persons that had a bad feeling about the Titanic. They changed plans at the last minute. I've gotten messages that warned me, and I would always take them seriously, and it turned out to be legit. I guess we'll never know, but Stevie knows, RIP Stevie Ray Vaughan.
I'm senior citizen, from Dallas, Stevie was what we call"crossing the bridge"in oak Cliff, and yes I caught his young self and his brother at a few different spots (garage, some different jam sessions) it's easy for people to say, after the fact, they could tell somebody had talent back when, but even as a youngster Stevie's chops were pretty slick, especially when you're staring at this skinny kid, not old enough to drive a car

Life by the Drop is one of my top favorite SRV songs. I listen to it very often. And his voice is just so good. He didn't even like his own singing, but that's often how it is with art
When Stevie got sober, he helped many others towards sobriety as well, including his own brother who credits him for this. Stevie would take fans sometimes into his tour bus who had approached him and asked him for help when it came to their own desire to get sober. He would talk to them, giving them support and advice. RIP Stevie, you are incredibly missed...
I was at Alpine Valley that night. He played like he knew it was his last time. It was incredible. When Clapton pushed him back out front for a second solo during the all star jam there was a feeling of the torch being passed. Unbelievable moment in time. I have never seen fog like that before or since. It was nearly impossible to see more than a few feet. We heard the news on our way back to Minnesota. Just devastating to hear. My favorite is Life Without You. His guitar goes completely sonic on that one

Skip to 6:15 and you’ll learn that the cause was pilot error (spatial disorientation) which I, and I assume anyone who has been paying attention, already knew. No breaking news here. The first six minutes is mostly the narrator telling you what he is going to tell you and telling you stuff he already told you. And stuff anyone who cares about Stevie Ray already knew. Dragging these videos out in order to make room for more ads has become epidemic on RUclips and it’s incredibly annoying.
Yeah this guy has his facts a little confused. Never mentioned the massive fog that was present that night, that helped screw the pilot's orientation up when they took off. And it wasn't a parking lot they took off from; it was a flat area that was part of a golf course where the area was shrouded with darkness. No parking lot lights anywhere near there. NTSB reports were pretty accurate and conclusive at the time so nothing new here. There were definitely lawsuits right afterwards that exposed the company and their "problem pilot" but it didn’t take decades to learn of any of this

My dad loved Stevie and I’ve never met a human that listened to music louder than my dad did. So i grew up listening to Stevie. Ended up becoming a professional guitar player as an adult. Although I didn’t play blues, listening to Stevie and all the other 60’s and 70’s rock bands growing up had a profound affect on me I have no doubt.

I’m a native Texan and grew up listening to my sisters 45’s and then Johnny Winter, Mountain, ZZ Top and Freddie King. Of course there were a bunch of Bands from overseas. My friends and myself never stop listening to Blues and Blues Rock. SRV definitely revived the Blues and befriended Buddy Guy, Albert King and BB King and they all bonded with him. SRV was sober 4 to 5 years prior to his death. RIP SRV!
SRV is a legend. I saw him perform live back in 1988 and his performance mesmerized me. I was in general admission right in front of him and my body moved without me wanting to move, couldn't help it. I can't explain how incredible that night was , it was magical. His guitar playing and singing were astonishing. Playing behind his back and with his teeth. I never witnessed a concert like this in my lifetime and never will again. Truely one of a kind. Miss you SRV, thank you for the gift and talent of music you have given us.
This was understood shortly after the crash. I attended that incredible yet fateful concert the night SRV was killed. It was hot, humid, and you couldn't see the people walking in front of you due to the fog. The next morning as I was working, and my ears still ringing from the concert, I heard that there was an accident at Alpine Valley. At first, nobody knew who was involved...my heart sank...when it was discovered it was Stevie who was killed I cried for 2 weeks; went to AA meetings...back then, it was reported that the copter pilot had citations. So.....this is already known. I still have the ticket stub, and have a handwritten letter & guitar pic from Buddy Guy. I used to frequent his Legends in downtown Chicago. Stevie was incredible. He briefly talked about sobriety, as I sat 6 rows from the stage looking at one year sobriety. It was truly humbling. SRV had a gift from God.

Rock musicians should just stick to bus travel. My guitar playing picked up after I heard a video interview with Stevie talking about sobriety. That message led me to clean up my act, so I actually have him to thank for my life. RIP Stevie.
There used to be a autographed picture of SRV at Fiddlers Green Amphitheater in Denver Colorado and it had wires going to it because people had tried to steal it. He played there about a month or 2 before Alpine Valley.

I was at work when my supervisor who also played in a band had just come back from lunch and told me -- I was floored, just stunned I had seen him play live twice and couldnt wait to see him again when he came around but it was not to be.

"Hello there my old friend. Not so long ago it was near the end. Played outside in the pouring rain On the way back, we started all over again." That's how I always hear it. We were the same age. I never met him, but he seemed authentic to me. Once I asked a fellow musician what he thought of SRV. He told me "his music was very derivative." I told him, You better listen again. Stevie was the best guitar-slinger I ever heard. Life by the drop, indeed.
I’ve been playing guitar since young, been a huge fan since the 80’s (still believe Stevie was the only decent music to come out of the 80’s, but then I’m a child of the 70’s and was still mourning the death of rock n roll through the “flock of seagulls 80’s”) Anyway, as a guitar player, life by the drop is the only Stevie ray vaughn tune I ever learned. Never felt worthy of trying the others, and this one rang so authentically as I got into 12 step recovery in 1986….

I was told by friends that worked a Legends at the time that the night was heavy with fog. The tail rotor got caught up in the ski lift cable and flipped the copter at take off speed upside down into the ski hill. A truly sad day for us all that loved his music. They say that everyone died on impact. We can only hope that no one suffered intensely at the time of impact. I’ll never forget those conversations with my friends. Stevie is still and always be a bright star to us all. Rest In Peace. ✌️❤️🩹🙏
My husband and I saw Stevie Ray and Double Trouble on the Riverboat President In New Orleans in the mid 1980s. We were so fortunate to see him. In all the interviews I've seen of Stevie Ray he never made a negative comment about any other performers. That made an impression on me. Such a terrible, terrible loss. It saddens me to this day.
I loved stevie and saw him in MASSACHUSETTS. I will never forget that day. WHEN HE DIED I PULLED OVER ON THE SIDE OF THE ROAD AND CRIED LIKE A BABY. I LOVED ALL HIS SONGS
I was at this show. It was my only time seeing SRV, and it was incredible to say the least. Your video identifies the problem being the lights. That may have been a part of it, but it was also a dense fog...really heavy due to the low lying areas between the hills. The pilot, having not been able to use radar for guidance, seems legitimate to me. It wouldve been tough to even guess where you were without it. Also, as a side not, in an old interview with Clapton he mentioned that they talked about flying out together in Vaughn's helicopter, but then ultimately agreed to meet up when they landed. We couldve easily lost 2 greats that night. So tragic, yet, Im thankful to have been there and experienced an absolutely fantastic performance.
The chopper SRV & others were in crashed into a ski hill. It's infuriating to know the ignorant SOB who killed everyone on board had absolutely no business flying in those conditions. This tragedy was 100% avoidable FFS. 32 years later,yet I can still remember where I was when the horrible news aired on the radio. Pilot error was also responsible for the chopper crash death of Kobe Bryant,his young daughter and their friends,as well as the crash of a small plane that took the life of another legendary musician,Randy Rhoads in 1982. RIP
I believe most airplane/helicopter crashes aren't due to mechanical failure, but pilot error, and a good portion of those are due to pilots overflying their abilities.
Another famous one had to do with Lynard Skynard and their crash. The pilots didn't realize because one of the engines was burning more fuel than usual they ran out of fuel before reaching their destination. Something that was overlooked by the pilots because they had never experienced it before and it cost them their lives as well as four other people on that plane.
In sure his fault was a tragic mistake, I feel your anger ,but in hate blame and anger. Are where the devil lives and how he comes to us. Lives were lost including his . Tin Pan Alley is one of many favorites. I remember exactly what I was doing when I found out he had died, I had only been listening to his music for a few years at the time, was very sad for me, he was truly amazing and one of a kind.
Stevie breathed decades of life into a musical genre that would have all but faded away in the rearview mirror. Our loss, everyone's loss. Too bad he's not around to tear it up. One of a kind.

I was 17 years old…..saw SRV & DT open for Joe Cocker at the Fox Theatre in St. Louis MO, just a few months before his tragic death. Many years later a video surfaced on RUclips of that St. Louis gig. I was thrilled someone recorded a nice bootleg of that show! It was just as I remembered it….Stevie slowing strutting back and forth across the stage singing his heart out and playing blistering blues guitar. The whole band sounded great.

SRV was laid to rest in Dallas Tx...in the suburb of Oak Cliff...a cemetery on the east side of I-35.....my girlfriend at the time, lived right across the interstate,on the west side!...from her porch,we watched the helicopter carrying his coffin land at his final resting place,in his home town!...it was a clear sunny day...but very sad...luv ya SRV,....RIP.
My favorite is 98.9% of his songs. I had the honor of seeing him in Santa Fe, New Mexico just before the crash. It was truly a great outdoor event. My sister got a drum stick and I was lucky enough to go.
I had two tickets for the first show-I couldn’t find them and thought they had been stolen. 20 years later I was moving my parents out if their house and stuck underneath the bottom of my old dresser drawer was the Tickettron envelope with my two tickets. I still have them. What a shame
I was born and raised in Wisconsin not far from Alpine Valley. A while back I had the chance to talk to an EMT who was one of the responders the night Stevie died. He told me details about the crash that were never released to the public. The most heartbreaking thing he said was that Stevie's body was intact. He died of massive internal injuries. But the thing was, the EMT said his body was a good distance from the helicopter. He could tell that Stevie had actually survived the initial crash and crawled away from the fuselage. He told me that he was 99% certain that if help had arrived immediately after the accident there was a good chance Stevie would have lived despite his injuries.

I was driving to work and had to pull over. I had the privilege of getting to meet and talk with him during the "Soul To Soul" tour. He (and everyone in the band) were incredibly nice. I couldn't pick just one song as a favorite, but "Life By The Drop" hits me harder after his passing.
That's the tour I saw him on too. Wow to be so lucky right . I had an extra ticket I begged my best friend and cousin to come but his wife wouldn't let him without some big uproar. So he turn me down . Years later he was still saying I wish i would of went .he loved the blues and the Allman Brothers. Finally I had my ticket stub framed and in gold font printed on it "tied to the whipping post" He kept it on his beside table until his death from cancer last year . We would laugh about the ticket and his wife she nevet said much . But the dirty look she gave me when I brought it up .she really didn't have to .lol

This was before SRV got sober; he was drinking a bottle of Crown Royal like it was Gatorade. He sat down and talked with me like we were old friends. Some guy was backstage with his very hot girlfriend and Stevie turned to me and said "Watch this." He asked the guy if he could give his gf a kiss. The guy said "Sure!" all star-struck. Stevie grabbed her and proceeded to makeout with her for at least 5 minutes, while the dude just stood there looking foolish. I'll never forget that night.

Never had the honor to meet Stevie ray .you are the man there .some things are hard to top .I met Mike zitto on my birthday in a small club he treated me like his biggest fan and signed me a nice poster wishing me a happy birthday .it hangs on my wall .it's things like that that make life good just happy moments looking back on a life lived . Stevie was one of the most amazing and flamboyant blues and rock guitarist of all time. Although his life may have been cut short by a tragic freak accident his legacy will live on forever. There are some things that seem to good to last and his was definitely one of them R.I.P.
I'm a fan of SRV, but my mom was a HUGE fan! Unlike other people her age she knew good music even her friends couldn't understand. She was very sad when he died. Now she's listening to him up in heaven. My favorite song is every song. But if I had to choose just one, I'd have to pick Scuttle Buttin'. The 1st time I saw Stevie Ray Vaughan was in 1984 he was warming up for Huey Lewis & The News at the Oklahoma City Zooamphitheater. The 2nd time I seen him was a 1986 and the fabulous Thunderbirds were warming him up at the Royal Oak music theater. The 3rd time I seen him was in 1989 and Jeff Beck was warming him up at the Palace of Auburn Hills .. All 3 shows were totally awesome Stevie ray was one of the greatest to ever live. Stevie and Johnny Winter are my 2 favorite blues players ever.. I really can't choose a favorite song I'll just go with couldn't stand the weather.. Maybe Texas flood even.. Or maybe Riviera paradise... I can't choose
Unfortunately, I never got to see Stevie play live, but I've been a fan of his music for decades. His death hit me hard. I couldn't believe it. My favorites songs are "Things That I Used To Do, Life Without You, Riviera Paradise, Life By The Drop, Tick Tock, and Lenny". A friend of mine who plays professionally actually taught me how to play "Lenny". I greatly appreciated that. RIP Stevie Ray Vaughan. Thanks for the memories.
I remember hearing Pride and Joy for the first time it was like man I gotta find who this guy is. It was the same hearing Purple Haze when it first came out and Running with the Devil. All these guitarist became icons in the music industry. IMO :-) Peace

he died because Eric Clapton asked him to take his seat at the chopper because Eric didnt want to travel with a chopper, had Eric not asked or Stevie refused then Eric Clapton would have died in 1990 and Stevie would have been alive.
I do wish I could have seen Stevie Ray, live. What an amazing story he had to tell, what superb music he made, played and sang to!! He is one of my favorites!! The song I've been revisiting lately is, Voodoo Child. I love that one!!

I was on my way home from work when I heard SRV had died. When I pulled up I just sat in my 280zx for about 10-15 minuets with my mouth hanging open. He was my favorite performer at the time & the Guitar God I always dreamed of being. Stevie & James "Honeyman" Scott , Both heart breakers and unreal talents.
Makes you wonder about how many songs him and Jimmy were putting together that never got air play or even heard by the public ! Stevie will always be our Prince to the blues and catalog speaks for itself ! It still hurts for his personal family and friends and all us fans ! A true Icon and Legend !! Stevie…. I truly know, that Jimmy is bereft without you…. Many of the interviews I saw with the two of you together, shows that you both were inseparable. I am the youngest of 5 siblings in my family…. You can truly see the big brother/little brother connection between the both of them. Stevie often said that when Jimmy would leave the house, he left very direct orders for Stevie to NOT pick up, or mess with his guitar (s)!! But like myself, and all little brothers were…. If told NOT to do it…. You betcha… we were gonna mess with whatever Big Brother told us not to, on pain of death even!!!! Many of Stevie’s one on one interviews, he relates that story… and I NEVER get tired of hearing it!!! Such a close bond that had…. I have seen many posts from his brother Jimmy within the last few years where he thanks everyone for commenting upon Stevie’s music and his playing…. He never once denies that Stevie was a bad musician, but what he does say… y’all miss his music… and so do I…. But he said more than anything… I miss my little brother! When I read that… I tested up and cried my eyes out! The shear pain and anguish in Jimmy’s post… you could just feel his pain sooo deeply through his words…. Ooohh man…. WOW!!! They will both be back together one day…. And what a glorious reunion that day will be for them both…. For now… Il’ll continue to listen with all my might to the raw agility and talent that has been takin away from us all and especially Jimmy. We miss Stevie to Jimmy…. I know not as much as you…. Saw Stevie at the Cotton Bowl opening for The Who. I was very close and saw him play his guitar behind his back. Sat 2 seats down from Randy Quaid whose brother, Dennis was the MC. Bill Graham was hanging around after the show and visited with us too. Glad I was able to see him.
Back in I think it was 1982, here at the Biggest musical Festival (SUMMERFEST) IN THE USA🇺🇸 MILWAUKEE WISCONSIN. Me and a friend heard this incredible Guitarist playing at one of the Back Stages. He was insane, he was S R V. From that day on I became his biggest fan. Then we saw him the next year at the same venue. Only it was packed shoulder to shoulder. Travis walk, Stevie is so fluid playing this song it is one of the many many songs, When Stevie plays it, it becomes an extension of himself
My favourite all time player he was just what the blues needed at the time could not believe this happened at the time just my luck seen him at the Opera house in Sydney will remember that gig forever
I was fortunate to see SRV and Double Trouble in concert twice, in 1987 and again in 1990, just 4 months before his death. He was an amazing entertainer and an inspiration in my own struggles with addiction. Livin' the dream! 😎
Fan since Texas Flood. I had the SF Chron delivered every morning then. The one with the head line of SRV's passing wound up in shreds in my kitchen. Boxset "Going Down' version was covered by us a few years back. I went last. Co guit who offered the tune thought this version was from SRV's last show. Can't say but what a loss. RIP, SRV and all.
Interesting video. I am from WI and formally managed the security company that was contracted to securely store the helicopter wreckage. I was also one of the two personnel from our company that had to carry the parts from one location of the facility and spread them out onto the floor of another. I still remember the eerie feeling that I had while carrying these parts, as soon were covered with hydraulic fluids and blood mixed. On this particular day, two investigators, one representing the family, which was claiming pilot error and the other representing the company which owned the helicopter, Omniflight Helicopters, Inc. There had been some talk about whether or not the crash may have been caused from the helicopter's tail rotor coming into contact with a ski lift cable, but the two investigators were commenting about how the pilot was a seasoned pilot who previously had once landed while in autorotation. After a couple of hours examining the pieces, one investigator took interest in a part with a cylindrical "sleeve" of which a shaft rotates inside of. He showed the other and as the two were peering into it, they both agreed that the burrs spotted inside could NOT have been caused from the wreckage and concluded that they were there prior to the accident. Mechanical failure.
At time of the crash I was working for a major audio company, a co-worker and I was working with Stevie on a custom speaker cabinet. We had passes for what would have been his next show. Tragic..
A bio I read of Eric Clapton some time back disclosed that EC accompanied Jimmy Vaughan to the morgue to make the identification. It was the first of several tragedies that Clapton would face in the next few years. After returning from the morgue, the bands and their support voted to continue touring deciding that is what Stevie would have wanted them to do. Jimmy returned to Dallas for Stevie's funeral and burial in his home neighborhood of Oak Cliff.
@@butchstaz5109 that's true. I suppose the writer of the bio excluded that as the "scene" he was writing was about Eric and Stevie. It had slipped my mind until your reply. Eric was supposed to be on one of the copters. I've read conflicting accounts that Eric was on a helicopter or he rode back to Chicago in a vehicle because the whole area had dense fog. I tend to believe that account. If I remember correctly, Stevie wanted to get back and rode the only helicopter that attempted the flight.

There is no such thing as a "radar display" in a helicopter. The only thing close is weather radar, which most helicopters don't have. In any case, it has nothing to do with being able to fly - only avoid thunderstorms. You would think someone making a video like this would get it right. What he probably meant was the pilot was not instrument rated. Even that doesn't make sense. He would have had to be on an instrument flight plan. You can't do that taking off from a parking lot. I suspect he just got spatially disoriented after takeoff.
It's hard to choose a favorite. He created some awesome originals (Tightrope maybe?) but then did amazing covers of work by Elmore James, Buddy Guy, Jimi Hendrix, T Bone Walker, Howlin' Wolf, etc. It was great music but also a great education.
Mid 80s the First time I heard Stevie Ray I was on a Bender ... A bar called the Honey Bucket in Long Beach Ca.. Small place that played albums on a nice system ... It's about mid morning on a Saturday ... I hear this terrific guitar cranking sound and a voice I couldn't discern so when Jerry the bar man walked by.. I say who's the guy you got on the hi fi ... He goes SRV ... I'm what ??? Stevie Ray Vaughan.... Cal State long Beach has a radio station that has a weekend show sat - sun 6 to 6 ... nothing but the blues .... I cranked it all weekend after that day ... Changed my musical taste that morning ... Since I've traveled to see the greats ... The long intro to Stevie's Mary had little lamb has been my answering message since the 80s ... People call me just to hear it 2-3 times ... The good leave too soon ...
On follow up ... Reba McIntyre's band was in an accident later on and a report said one of Stevie Ray's albums was in the CD player ... I believe that's correct

I saw him just as he was breaking out $ 5.00 cover charge 50 people at first he plays a twenty minute solo and about 300 when he opened his eyes people were lined on the pay phone telling people to come on down. I think the whole band was on parole and weren’t supposed to be out of Texas. In a couple years he would breakout. He was on Canadian TV with Albert King his biggest influence it was great to see them play together
Good video about SRV's life and how he conquered his demons. I saw him twice when he came through Phoenix playing at the AZ State Fairgrounds in the AZ Veterans Memorial Coliseum. The acoustics were not the best but what great shows. Loved him and his band Double Trouble. Missed him playing in the middle 1980s at the Annual Chicago Blues Fest. His name was getting traction after his great recordings with David Bowie from his Let's Dance LP. A complete showman once he cleared himself from his drugs and booze days. That Austin City Limits show was incredible as that was where he and his Brother Jimmy showcased their early talents. Thanks for sharing this video. God's blessings to the Vaughn Families.
i just graduated from high school in 1990. This one hurt bad. I had the wind kicked out of me. I had lost a close friend in a car accident 2 yrs before. SRV's loss felt the same to me. Gone too soon

My favorite cover is little wing, and the video fir cold shot makes me laugh and thankful I got to see him live . He floated across the stage like a ghost he hever picked up his cowboy boots just kind of moved scooted and shuffled in such a smooth cool way . And please dint forget double trouble . Those two were brothers who have gone on to honor Stevie and we should thank them for there part as well he lived them and dint forget there still out there someplace playing the blues .
The singer songwriter Phil moog of the band U-F-O . they have over 25 albums in a 50 year career in Rick music . They are overlooked by fame but not by serious bands and musicians .they have been a big influence ti such bands as Metallica, rush, van Halen, motley crue, and so many guitarist you can't even name them all .tragically Phil had a heart attack recently, and it's the end of the road for the band most likely at 62 and still buying and listening to all kinds of new music. I really think you should showcase this band and help enlighten people to just how fantastic there music really is . Songs like try me, baby blue burn your house down ,love to love along with what is still considered one of the best live albums of all time .strangers in the night . Do a little research and you will find that this is probably the most overlook group in rock history . I feel you owe it to yourself and the world to help give them there due rock history . I saw them two years ago and live they still sound better than the rolling stones and I love the stones but pound for pound song for song .I'd put them up against anybody but say zeppelin or Floyd. You keep asking what something we should talk about what's a great band to bring up . Get out the head pullers and figure it out . Just the sings I mentioned will open up your world if your not some jaded know it all already or think we'll there nor popular enough .remember it's that attitude that's stiffled real Rock since its existence . Open your ears and just listen to the content if a song called quicksilver rider ,Martian landscape ,take it or leave it ,or the backbone of on with the action . Phenomenon , no heavy petting, and lights out . They are musical masterpieces . Wake up and find out or quit asking
We were there and it was incredibly foggy. We were all discussing how they could fly in such conditions. We saw the chopper take off, never heard any noise from the crash. Didn't know anything happened until the next day. What an incredible loss!

Stevie Ray never wrote or sang a bad song. The day before he was killed, he told his band members that he had a nightmare that he was dead and he could see all the mourners at his funeral. He said it terrified him, but it was very peaceful. The last thing he said when he boarded the helicopter was, "I love y'all". I'm a Texan, too, born and bred. Texas loves and mourns Stevie Ray Vaughan and his music.

I wonder why if he had that dream he would still get on board the helicopter. Oftentimes those dreams are warnings, just like certain persons that had a bad feeling about the Titanic. They changed plans at the last minute. I've gotten messages that warned me, and I would always take them seriously, and it turned out to be legit. I guess we'll never know, but Stevie knows, RIP Stevie Ray Vaughan.
I'm senior citizen, from Dallas, Stevie was what we call"crossing the bridge"in oak Cliff, and yes I caught his young self and his brother at a few different spots (garage, some different jam sessions) it's easy for people to say, after the fact, they could tell somebody had talent back when, but even as a youngster Stevie's chops were pretty slick, especially when you're staring at this skinny kid, not old enough to drive a car

Life by the Drop is one of my top favorite SRV songs. I listen to it very often. And his voice is just so good. He didn't even like his own singing, but that's often how it is with art
When Stevie got sober, he helped many others towards sobriety as well, including his own brother who credits him for this. Stevie would take fans sometimes into his tour bus who had approached him and asked him for help when it came to their own desire to get sober. He would talk to them, giving them support and advice. RIP Stevie, you are incredibly missed...
I was at Alpine Valley that night. He played like he knew it was his last time. It was incredible. When Clapton pushed him back out front for a second solo during the all star jam there was a feeling of the torch being passed. Unbelievable moment in time. I have never seen fog like that before or since. It was nearly impossible to see more than a few feet. We heard the news on our way back to Minnesota. Just devastating to hear.

Yeah this guy has his facts a little confused. Never mentioned the massive fog that was present that night, that helped screw the pilot's orientation up when they took off. And it wasn't a parking lot they took off from; it was a flat area that was part of a golf course where the area was shrouded with darkness. No parking lot lights anywhere near there. NTSB reports were pretty accurate and conclusive at the time so nothing new here. There were definitely lawsuits right afterwards that exposed the company and their "problem pilot" but it didn’t take decades to learn of any of this

My dad loved Stevie and I’ve never met a human that listened to music louder than my dad did. So i grew up listening to Stevie. Ended up becoming a professional guitar player as an adult. Although I didn’t play blues, listening to Stevie and all the other 60’s and 70’s rock bands growing up had a profound affect on me I have no doubt.

I’m a native Texan and grew up listening to my sisters 45’s and then Johnny Winter, Mountain, ZZ Top and Freddie King. Of course there were a bunch of Bands from overseas. My friends and myself never stop listening to Blues and Blues Rock. SRV definitely revived the Blues and befriended Buddy Guy, Albert King and BB King and they all bonded with him. SRV was sober 4 to 5 years prior to his death. RIP SRV!
SRV is a legend. I saw him perform live back in 1988 and his performance mesmerized me. I was in general admission right in front of him and my body moved without me wanting to move, couldn't help it. I can't explain how incredible that night was , it was magical. His guitar playing and singing were astonishing. Playing behind his back and with his teeth. I never witnessed a concert like this in my lifetime and never will again. Truely one of a kind. Miss you SRV, thank you for the gift and talent of music you have given us.

This was understood shortly after the crash. I attended that incredible yet fateful concert the night SRV was killed. It was hot, humid, and you couldn't see the people walking in front of you due to the fog. The next morning as I was working, and my ears still ringing from the concert, I heard that there was an accident at Alpine Valley. At first, nobody knew who was involved...my heart sank...when it was discovered it was Stevie who was killed I cried for 2 weeks; went to AA meetings...back then, it was reported that the copter pilot had citations. So.....this is already known.
I still have the ticket stub, and have a handwritten letter & guitar pic from Buddy Guy. I used to frequent his Legends in downtown Chicago.
Stevie was incredible. He briefly talked about sobriety, as I sat 6 rows from the stage looking at one year sobriety. It was truly humbling. SRV had a gift from God.

Rock musicians should just stick to bus travel. My guitar playing picked up after I heard a video interview with Stevie talking about sobriety. That message led me to clean up my act, so I actually have him to thank for my life. RIP Stevie.
There used to be a autographed picture of SRV at Fiddlers Green Amphitheater in Denver Colorado and it had wires going to it because people had tried to steal it. He played there about a month or 2 before Alpine Valley.

I was at work when my supervisor who also played in a band had just come back from lunch and told me -- I was
floored, just stunned I had seen him play live twice and couldnt wait to see him again when he came around but it was not to be.
Life by the Drop. It's so hard to listen to without crying because it makes Stevie's death that much more tragic that he was sober and had nowhere to go but up in life.
"Hello there my old friend. Not so long ago it was near the end. Played outside in the pouring rain On the way back, we started all over again." That's how I always hear it. We were the same age. I never met him, but he seemed authentic to me. Once I asked a fellow musician what he thought of SRV. He told me "his music was very derivative." I told him, You better listen again. Stevie was the best guitar-slinger I ever heard. Life by the drop, indeed.
I’ve been playing guitar since young, been a huge fan since the 80’s (still believe Stevie was the only decent music to come out of the 80’s, but then I’m a child of the 70’s and was still mourning the death of rock n roll through the “flock of seagulls 80’s”)
Anyway, as a guitar player, life by the drop is the only Stevie ray vaughn tune I ever learned. Never felt worthy of trying the others, and this one rang so authentically as I got into 12 step recovery in 1986….

I was told by friends that worked a Legends at the time that the night was heavy with fog. The tail rotor got caught up in the ski lift cable and flipped the copter at take off speed upside down into the ski hill. A truly sad day for us all that loved his music. They say that everyone died on impact. We can only hope that no one suffered intensely at the time of impact. I’ll never forget those conversations with my friends. Stevie is still and always be a bright star to us all. Rest In Peace. ✌️❤️🩹🙏

My husband and I saw Stevie Ray and Double Trouble on the Riverboat President In New Orleans in the mid 1980s. We were so fortunate to see him. In all the interviews I've seen of Stevie Ray he never made a negative comment about any other performers. That made an impression on me. Such a terrible, terrible loss. It saddens me to this day.

I was at this show. It was my only time seeing SRV, and it was incredible to say the least. Your video identifies the problem being the lights. That may have been a part of it, but it was also a dense fog...really heavy due to the low lying areas between the hills. The pilot, having not been able to use radar for guidance, seems legitimate to me. It wouldve been tough to even guess where you were without it. Also, as a side not, in an old interview with Clapton he mentioned that they talked about flying out together in Vaughn's helicopter, but then ultimately agreed to meet up when they landed. We couldve easily lost 2 greats that night. So tragic, yet, Im thankful to have been there and experienced an absolutely fantastic performance.

The chopper SRV & others were in crashed into a ski hill. It's infuriating to know the ignorant SOB who killed everyone on board had absolutely no business flying in those conditions. This tragedy was 100% avoidable FFS. 32 years later,yet I can still remember where I was when the horrible news aired on the radio.
Pilot error was also responsible for the chopper crash death of Kobe Bryant,his young daughter and their friends,as well as the crash of a small plane that took the life of another legendary musician,Randy Rhoads in 1982. RIP
I believe most airplane/helicopter crashes aren't due to mechanical failure, but pilot error, and a good portion of those are due to pilots overflying their abilities.
Another famous one had to do with Lynard Skynard and their crash. The pilots didn't realize because one of the engines was burning more fuel than usual they ran out of fuel before reaching their destination. Something that was overlooked by the pilots because they had never experienced it before and it cost them their lives as well as four other people on that plane.
In sure his fault was a tragic mistake, I feel your anger ,but in hate blame and anger. Are where the devil lives and how he comes to us. Lives were lost including his . I hope you can forgive , I'd like to think Stevie he would be the first to forgive him because his was a beautiful kind soul .

Tin Pan Alley is one of many favorites. I remember exactly what I was doing when I found out he had died, I had only been listening to his music for a few years at the time, was very sad for me, he was truly amazing and one of a kind.

I was 17 years old…..saw SRV & DT open for Joe Cocker at the Fox Theatre in St. Louis MO, just a few months before his tragic death. Many years later a video surfaced on RUclips of that St. Louis gig. I was thrilled someone recorded a nice bootleg of that show! It was just as I remembered it….Stevie slowing strutting back and forth across the stage singing his heart out and playing blistering blues guitar. The whole band sounded great.

SRV was laid to rest in Dallas Tx...in the suburb of Oak Cliff...a cemetery on the east side of I-35.....my girlfriend at the time, lived right across the interstate,on the west side!...from her porch,we watched the helicopter carrying his coffin land at his final resting place,in his home town!...it was a clear sunny day...but very sad...luv ya SRV,....RIP.
My favorite is 98.9% of his songs. I had the honor of seeing him in Santa Fe, New Mexico just before the crash. It was truly a great outdoor event. My sister got a drum stick and I was lucky enough to go.

I had two tickets for the first show-I couldn’t find them and thought they had been stolen. 20 years later I was moving my parents out if their house and stuck underneath the bottom of my old dresser drawer was the Tickettron envelope with my two tickets. I still have them. What a shame

I was born and raised in Wisconsin not far from Alpine Valley. A while back I had the chance to talk to an EMT who was one of the responders the night Stevie died. He told me details about the crash that were never released to the public. The most heartbreaking thing he said was that Stevie's body was intact. He died of massive internal injuries. But the thing was, the EMT said his body was a good distance from the helicopter. He could tell that Stevie had actually survived the initial crash and crawled away from the fuselage. He told me that he was 99% certain that if help had arrived immediately after the accident there was a good chance Stevie would have lived despite his injuries.
Interesting...l had read an autopsy report (don't know if it was authentic) that his aorta had ruptured... doesn't take long to bleed out from that.

Can't do much about "massive internal injuries"...once the organs tear to pieces there's no duct-tape magic doctors can perform.

I was driving to work and had to pull over. I had the privilege of getting to meet and talk with him during the "Soul To Soul" tour. He (and everyone in the band) were incredibly nice. I couldn't pick just one song as a favorite, but "Life By The Drop" hits me harder after his passing.

Years later he was still saying I wish i would of went .he loved the blues and the Allman Brothers. Finally I had my ticket stub framed and in gold font printed on it "tied to the whipping post"
He kept it on his beside table until his death from cancer last year .
We would laugh about the ticket and his wife she nevet said much . But the dirty look she gave me when I brought it up .she really didn't have to .lol

I was really lucky. My girlfriend at the time was a concert photographer, so I got to go backstage. This was before SRV got sober; he was drinking a bottle of Crown Royal like it was Gatorade. He sat down and talked with me like we were old friends. Some guy was backstage with his very hot girlfriend and Stevie turned to me and said "Watch this." He asked the guy if he could give his gf a kiss. The guy said "Sure!" all star-struck. Stevie grabbed her and proceeded to makeout with her for at least 5 minutes, while the dude just stood there looking foolish. I'll never forget that night.

Never had the honor to meet Stevie ray .you are the man there .some things are hard to top .I met Mike zitto on my birthday in a small club he treated me like his biggest fan and signed me a nice poster wishing me a happy birthday .it hangs on my wall .it's things like that that make life good just happy moments looking back on a life lived . Great story man .
Stevie was one of the most amazing and flamboyant blues and rock guitarist of all time. Although his life may have been cut short by a tragic freak accident his legacy will live on forever. There are some things that seem to good to last and his was definitely one of them R.I.P.

I'm a fan of SRV, but my mom was a HUGE fan! Unlike other people her age she knew good music even her friends couldn't understand. She was very sad when he died. Now she's listening to him up in heaven. My favorite song is every song. But if I had to choose just one, I'd have to pick Scuttle Buttin'. People always say how when SRV plays it sounds like two guitarists. This song live! WOW!! It really is two guitar players hands. His hands and the hands of God! RIP SRV, and Mom, too! 😇😇

The 1st time I saw Stevie Ray Vaughan was in 1984 he was warming up for Huey Lewis & The News at the Oklahoma City Zooamphitheater. The 2nd time I seen him was a 1986 and the fabulous Thunderbirds were warming him up at the Royal Oak music theater. The 3rd time I seen him was in 1989 and Jeff Beck was warming him up at the Palace of Auburn Hills .. All 3 shows were totally awesome Stevie ray was one of the greatest to ever live. Stevie and Johnny Winter are my 2 favorite blues players ever.. I really can't choose a favorite song I'll just go with couldn't stand the weather.. Maybe Texas flood even.. Or maybe Riviera paradise... I can't choose
I worked with a guy at time who played in a blues band and he took Stevie's death very hard. I remember it well.
Unfortunately, I never got to see Stevie play live, but I've been a fan of his music for decades. His death hit me hard. I couldn't believe it. My favorites songs are "Things That I Used To Do, Life Without You, Riviera Paradise, Life By The Drop, Tick Tock, and Lenny". A friend of mine who plays professionally actually taught me how to play "Lenny". I greatly appreciated that. RIP Stevie Ray Vaughan. Thanks for the memories.
I remember hearing Pride and Joy for the first time it was like man I gotta find who this guy is. It was the same hearing Purple Haze when it first came out and Running with the Devil. All these guitarist became icons in the music industry. IMO :-) Peace

Can only imagine what Stevies last performance was like. Amazing to watch him having the time of his life playing with the other famous musicians. he died because Eric Clapton asked him to take his seat at the chopper because Eric didnt want to travel with a chopper, had Eric not asked or Stevie refused then Eric Clapton would have died in 1990 and Stevie would have been alive.

I was on my way home from work when I heard SRV had died. When I pulled up I just sat in my 280zx for about 10-15 minuets with my mouth hanging open.

Stevie…. I truly know, that Jimmy is bereft without you…. Many of the interviews I saw with the two of you together, shows that you both were inseparable. I am the youngest of 5 siblings in my family…. You can truly see the big brother/little brother connection between the both of them. Stevie often said that when Jimmy would leave the house, he left very direct orders for Stevie to NOT pick up, or mess with his guitar (s)!! But like myself, and all little brothers were…. If told NOT to do it…. You betcha… we were gonna mess with whatever Big Brother told us not to, on pain of death even!!!! Many of Stevie’s one on one interviews, he relates that story… and I NEVER get tired of hearing it!!! Such a close bond that had…. I have seen many posts from his brother Jimmy within the last few years where he thanks everyone for commenting upon Stevie’s music and his playing…. He never once denies that Stevie was a bad musician, but what he does say… y’all miss his music… and so do I…. But he said more than anything… I miss my little brother! When I read that… I tested up and cried my eyes out! The shear pain and anguish in Jimmy’s post… you could just feel his pain sooo deeply through his words…. Ooohh man…. WOW!!! They will both be back together one day…. And what a glorious reunion that day will be for them both…. Saw Stevie at the Cotton Bowl opening for The Who. I was very close and saw him play his guitar behind his back. Sat 2 seats down from Randy Quaid whose brother, Dennis was the MC. Bill Graham was hanging around after the show and visited with us too. Glad I was able to see him.
Saw him live twice…. Just an amazing musician and human.
Back in I think it was 1982, here at the Biggest musical Festival (SUMMERFEST) IN THE USA🇺🇸 MILWAUKEE WISCONSIN. Me and a friend heard this incredible Guitarist playing at one of the Back Stages. He was insane, he was S R V. From that day on I became his biggest fan. Then we saw him the next year at the same venue. Only it was packed shoulder to shoulder. Travis walk, Stevie is so fluid playing this song it is one of the many many songs, When Stevie plays it, it becomes an extension of himself

Interesting video. I am from WI and formally managed the security company that was contracted to securely store the helicopter wreckage. I was also one of the two personnel from our company that had to carry the parts from one location of the facility and spread them out onto the floor of another. I still remember the eerie feeling that I had while carrying these parts, as soon were covered with hydraulic fluids and blood mixed. On this particular day, two investigators, one representing the family, which was claiming pilot error and the other representing the company which owned the helicopter, Omniflight Helicopters, Inc. There had been some talk about whether or not the crash may have been caused from the helicopter's tail rotor coming into contact with a ski lift cable, but the two investigators were commenting about how the pilot was a seasoned pilot who previously had once landed while in autorotation. After a couple of hours examining the pieces, one investigator took interest in a part with a cylindrical "sleeve" of which a shaft rotates inside of. He showed the other and as the two were peering into it, they both agreed that the burrs spotted inside could NOT have been caused from the wreckage and concluded that they were there prior to the accident. Mechanical failure.

At time of the crash I was working for a major audio company, a co-worker and I was working with Stevie on a custom speaker cabinet. We had passes for what would have been his next show. Tragic..
A bio I read of Eric Clapton some time back disclosed that EC accompanied Jimmy Vaughan to the morgue to make the identification. It was the first of several tragedies that Clapton would face in the next few years. After returning from the morgue, the bands and their support voted to continue touring deciding that is what Stevie would have wanted them to do. Jimmy returned to Dallas for Stevie's funeral and burial in his home neighborhood of Oak Cliff.

@@butchstaz5109 that's true. I suppose the writer of the bio excluded that as the "scene" he was writing was about Eric and Stevie. It had slipped my mind until your reply. Eric was supposed to be on one of the copters. I've read conflicting accounts that Eric was on a helicopter or he rode back to Chicago in a vehicle because the whole area had dense fog. I tend to believe that account. If I remember correctly, Stevie wanted to get back and rode the only helicopter that attempted the flight.
@@kayables Stevie's death was in August 1990. Eric's son's death was in March 1991. It took a very strong will for Eric not to start drinking again. He held the line.

There is no such thing as a "radar display" in a helicopter. The only thing close is weather radar, which most helicopters don't have. In any case, it has nothing to do with being able to fly - only avoid thunderstorms. You would think someone making a video like this would get it right. What he probably meant was the pilot was not instrument rated. Even that doesn't make sense. He would have had to be on an instrument flight plan. You can't do that taking off from a parking lot. I suspect he just got spatially disoriented after takeoff.
It's hard to choose a favorite. He created some awesome originals (Tightrope maybe?) but then did amazing covers of work by Elmore James, Buddy Guy, Jimi Hendrix, T Bone Walker, Howlin' Wolf, etc. It was great music but also a great education.

Mid 80s the First time I heard Stevie Ray I was on a Bender ... A bar called the Honey Bucket in Long Beach Ca.. Small place that played albums on a nice system ... It's about mid morning on a Saturday ... I hear this terrific guitar cranking sound and a voice I couldn't discern so when Jerry the bar man walked by.. I say who's the guy you got on the hi fi ... He goes SRV ... I'm what ??? Stevie Ray Vaughan.... Cal State long Beach has a radio station that has a weekend show sat - sun 6 to 6 ... nothing but the blues .... I cranked it all weekend after that day ... Changed my musical taste that morning ... Since I've traveled to see the greats ... The long intro to Stevie's Mary had little lamb has been my answering message since the 80s ... People call me just to hear it 2-3 times ... The good leave too soon ...
On follow up ... Reba McIntyre's band was in an accident later on and a report said one of Stevie Ray's albums was in the CD player ... I believe that's correct

I saw him just as he was breaking out $ 5.00 cover charge 50 people at first he plays a twenty minute solo and about 300 when he opened his eyes people were lined on the pay phone telling people to come on down. I think the whole band was on parole and weren’t supposed to be out of Texas. In a couple years he would breakout. He was on Canadian TV with Albert King his biggest influence it was great to see them play together
Good video about SRV's life and how he conquered his demons. I saw him twice when he came through Phoenix playing at the AZ State Fairgrounds in the AZ Veterans Memorial Coliseum. The acoustics were not the best but what great shows. Loved him and his band Double Trouble. Missed him playing in the middle 1980s at the Annual Chicago Blues Fest. His name was getting traction after his great recordings with David Bowie from his Let's Dance LP. A complete showman once he cleared himself from his drugs and booze days. That Austin City Limits show was incredible as that was where he and his Brother Jimmy showcased their early talents. Thanks for sharing this video. God's blessings to the Vaughn Families.

My favorite cover is little wing, and the video fir cold shot makes me laugh and thankful I got to see him live . He floated across the stage like a ghost he hever picked up his cowboy boots just kind of moved scooted and shuffled in such a smooth cool way . And please dint forget double trouble . Those two were brothers who have gone on to honor Stevie and we should thank them for there part as well he lived them and dint forget there still out there someplace playing the blues .
The singer songwriter Phil moog of the band U-F-O . they have over 25 albums in a 50 year career in Rick music . They are overlooked by fame but not by serious bands and musicians .they have been a big influence ti such bands as Metallica, rush, van Halen, motley crue, and so many guitarist you can't even name them all .tragically Phil had a heart attack recently, and it's the end of the road for the band most likely at 62 and still buying and listening to all kinds of new music. I really think you should showcase this band and help enlighten people to just how fantastic there music really is .
Songs like try me, baby blue burn your house down ,love to love along with what is still considered one of the best live albums of all time .strangers in the night . Do a little research and you will find that this is probably the most overlook group in rock history .
I feel you owe it to yourself and the world to help give them there due rock history . I saw them two years ago and live they still sound better than the rolling stones and I love the stones but pound for pound song for song .I'd put them up against anybody but say zeppelin or Floyd.
You keep asking what something we should talk about what's a great band to bring up . Get out the head pullers and figure it out . Just the sings I mentioned will open up your world if your not some jaded know it all already or think we'll there nor popular enough .remember it's that attitude that's stiffled real Rock since its existence . Open your ears and just listen to the content if a song called quicksilver rider ,Martian landscape ,take it or leave it ,or the backbone of on with the action .

We were there and it was incredibly foggy. We were all discussing how they could fly in such conditions. We saw the chopper take off, never heard any noise from the crash. Didn't know anything happened until the next day. What an incredible loss!
