This Berkeley Law Veterans Law Practicum student-led program covers benefits available to and challenges faced by Native veterans. American Indian and Alaska Natives serve in the military at five times the national average. Yet they face significant and unique barriers accessing earned benefits. Student presenters provide background on American Indian and Alaska Natives’ service in the military. They also demystify under-recognized benefits and rights, focusing on: Native servicemembers’ First Amendment right to sacramental peyote use while serving; a VA home loan program specifically for Native veterans; and military diversion and tribal Healing to Wellness Courts for Native veterans.
Presentation of this Berkeley Law Veterans Law Practicum student-led program is co-sponsored by CLA’s Litigation Section, Veterans and Military Affairs Committee, and Racial Justice Committee.
Speakers: Caillie Roach, Ryan Pinch, and Caity Lynch (Berkeley Law students)
Moderators: Rose Carmen Goldberg and Adrieannette Ciccone
