These are amazing machines! I'm in the process of swapping out a case as my old Mac Pro 5,1 has a dent. I got an "empty" case too; thankfully the previous owner left the power button. The case came with a dual CPU tray (no CPUs or RAM), no HDDs or caddies, but has the power supply and DVD drive - all for $20 so I feel that I scored big time!! Since my old Mac Pro is a single CPU tray, I plan to buy and match them with either two Xeon X5680s or X5690s, transfer my 32GB RAM, and my SSDs and I should be golden for a little bit longer!! Thanks for posting this video.
Which cases are compatible with each other? Mac Pro 5 and 4 or can I also use 1,1 or 3,1 case to put the 5,1 hardware into. They do all look like a similar frame.
Honestly, they all do look so similar, dont forget the Powermac G5 looks similar, but only has the one optical drive bay door. I don't have an answer as to compatibility off-hand, but I encourage you to check it out online! Also holy shit your channel is awesome and I just subbed. I am a HUGE car guy.
Considering this was your first time pulling apart a Mac Pro, you did alright. I have done this transplant a few times, and I have a banged up Mac Pro that I want to shoot, and it has 3 bent handles - can't even get the door off. I also want to shoot how to pack a Mac Pro, and how not to pack a Mac Pro.
I've lovingly upgraded my 5,1 Mac Pro over the past year or so. I upgraded the CPU from a single 2.8 GHz quad-core to two 3.06 GHz six-cores; the GPU from a HD 5770 to an RX 580; the RAM from 6 GB to 96 GB; the storage from a 500 GB mechanical hard-drive to a 1 TB NVMe SSD; and I installed a USB 3/C combo card, a FireWire 400 card and dual Blu Ray drives.
I once upgraded a 2006 1,1 Mac Pro with two quad-core CPUs (up from the original dual-cores). Since I didn't have quite the right tools and yet powered through with what I had, I scraped my knuckles really badly and bled all over the heat-sinks. I cleaned off the blood, of course, but I sometimes joke that this Mac Pro (which my friend Kris now owns) must be haunted now.
Great video. Is it possible to swap the metal and plastic "frame" on the back of the case where the PCIe cards show their ports? The reason I'd like to do so is because there's a factory "sticker" (not really a sticker--more like the plastic part of frame itself) on the bottom of that frame imprinted with the unit's model number, serial number, processor type, etc., and I'd like to keep that "matching" the guts that I'm swapping. The part I'm talking about is about 1/4 down from the top and 1/5 of the way from the left at the 3:20 mark in your video.
It would appear that "No" is the answer to your question. I did a search for used cases, and found that the piece with the serial number always seems to remain attached to totally stripped down cases.
@@CanadianComputerCollector Thank you for the great video! I have a Mac Pro with a damaged case. I'm trying to decide if I would be able to transfer everything into a nice case. I looks complicated and that it would be easy to mess something up.
you missed the one part I'm trying to find... the little spring loaded doors that cover the CD slot. I removed mine years ago because I was having too many fail to eject errors. Now I'm trying to put those doors back and they don't seem to go in any way I try.
Every macpro and powermac G5 I bought on ebay arrived totally smashed. I had to do a case swap for every of them (4 so far). UPS - Universal Parcel Smasher
I need to replace the entire mechanisms of the optical bay doors on my Mac Pro as couldn''t find anything online. Can you or someone tell me if, in first place, it is possible to do it and if so, where I can find the information? It would be highly appreciated.
Hi there Flocon! I actually went and combed through the original footage of this video to get you an answer. It looks like you can. Both drive bay doors seem to be part of either one large plastic frame, or they are individually held onto that frame. On said frame I noticed there was at least one screw that can be removed leading me to believe you can replace them! If it's anything like the power button, it'll all be one annoying plastic mechanism, but at least it can be done!
@@CanadianComputerCollector Thank you so much for your reply. I definitely will look at it again and very closely and will follow up with my findings if you do not mind, of course. Thanks again!
Sir, my compliments on your channel. Towards the end of my ownership of one of these Macpro5,1s, the fans never stopped going at full speed. This is when I first heard the term "thermal paste," because folks discussing this problem described what needed to be done to fix it. But I was moving on to an iMac17,1 anyway, so I sold it without repairing the heat issue. Did you address any such issue with this one?
Thank you so very much! I didn’t repast this one as the owner had only asked me to move the contents from the smashed up case to the fresh one, but I highly recommend when opening up any older machine.
Hey dude! They still have a ton of value. Since the loadout truly dictates price, I'd look up your specs then check out eBay sold for a similar model. It might give a better idea of value than I could.
If this was one of the brittle beige plastic 90s Macintoshes, it would of been so much worse. Aluminum can take a beating, but when will sellers learn how to properly pack? 😭

That's a great haul for a great price!
Such a underrated RUclipsr keep it up
Thanks so much man. That really means a lot as I am trying to build something. You made my day yesterday, and now today!
I agree and am doing my part to spread the word

I want to do a video one day where we feature a ton of other peoples super cool Mac Pro builds that they still daily drive.

Holy smokes that’s a nice upgrade. The scraping your hands thing is very real eh lol

Cinclodes Thanks for the Intel!

Oh no! I am so sorry lol. I tried to be as thorough as possible. Any luck?
no, I cannot figure out how to reinstall them to save my life... even looking side by side with a Mac that still has them
@@WJHandyDad … look for a clip here on YT titled “MacPro optical drive doors sticking open - solved!”
eBay shippers are so bold. I was shipped a PowerBook G4 in a bubble envelope.
Wooooof.
Can a normal ATX pc be built on this case?
Interesting question, I'll look into that

My god! You’d think people would be able to figure these things out eh.
What graphics card do you have in there?
I think it was an RX570. I asked my buddy who owns the machine and he said the same.

Haha the only pair I have right now are from a Hot Wheels PC.
Good work but I was here for the power button footage.
Bahahaha. Yes.
Very Good job The The Mac Pro To Mac Pro parts Transfer That Was a very funny shout out to jay Nice Video
Thanks Dave!
Helped me a lot. Thanks!
That makes it all worth it! Be good!
Nice job!

love the vid mate
Thanks a bunch!
Fun presentation, but then again the merit lies in the details. Thank you.
Thank you!!!
Now when mini m4 roll out, it is time to trash all that stuff.
While the m4 mini is a compelling value, there's no reason to throw out perfectly functional old computers. Keep them going as long as possible!
Fun(sad) fact, the Classic Mac Pro's are all vintage at this point :(
Huzzah!

Oh man, it would have been like the big bang. Millions of splinters shooting out into a dark box, each creating their own system.
Wow Jay sure is rude! 🤣
He's a nice guy
...it would of been simpler to buy a flashed video card and get rid of the garbage gt 120.
Hey David! Probably, but I did this at the behest of a friend and to be able to show people how to do a case swap on a Mac Pro.
🤣
You know you loved it
