Depending on what 6 jaw chuck that is , some of the older 6 jaw chucks were mounted to a unique style back plate an were adjustable both laterally & coaxial , once the chuck is dialed in to its spindle the tail stock should have a left an right adjustment we’re it slides left or right on its base , as far as up an down on the tail stock most older lathes like my south bend had to have shim stock added in between the tail stock base an tail stock stock after years of use to get the spindle / tail stock alignment right , you can normally get away with about .001 to .002 of up an down mismatch on the tail stock but the left an right has to be spot on or you’ll cut a taper like what you had going on , man I love the content you are one sharp dude an by the way you ever catch a chip in your foot working around the shop bare footed lol ?? Radical 🤙

Some lathe manufactures actually manufacture a plus .001 to .002 extra center height on the tail stock center compared to its spindle center to accommodate for bed ware for the years to come in its life span just another 2 cents

what do you think i was doing here. the big problem here is that this precision machining lathe is not all that precision. it is a cheapass import lathe from the 70's and it was not all that good when it was new. some things i can fx, but most of the problems are built in and unrepairable. the tilstock is one of those parts, so i had to do some fab work and shmming to over come most of its errors.

I would be checking the front head bolts to see if the are broken

i don't even see them, much as get to them.they are not broken. the lathe is over cutting, not under cutting. if the bolts were loose or broken, it would under cut.

Is the lathe bed worn close to the chuck ?

Can you check the bed for flatness

Shoulda checked that the bed is level first. No twist.
