These things are so cool. NES-era Nintendo fascinates me in how earnest it all felt. Before everything went megacorporate, it was some dudes in an office in WAY over their head.
Playchoice-10 is the lone reason I got to play Super Mario Bros 3 many months before it was released on the NES. There was a Playchoice-10 kiosk at a bowling alley my friends and I used to hang out at when we were teenagers. We thought it was so cool we got to play Super Mario Bros 3 when everyone else was still playing Super Mario Bros 2. We already knew how to play it when it came out.
Oh wow.. this is an interesting machine! It's actually kinda cool seeing these games you'd play at home be playable on an arcade machine! You wouldn't see that anymore.
Thanks for watching! This is definitely a concept that's been lost as video games have advanced. Even SMB3 being released on the PlayChoice 10 ahead of time is almost like a movie being released in theater before going to VHS! It certainly was a different era. :)
I remember going to an '80 style bar and there being an arcade machine with a bunch of games, and I litterally played Vs. Super Mario Bros. until my burger was done. Some kids watched me play. It reminded me to when I had a Gameboy Advance in school and that made you the coolest kid in town.
That's awesome! It sounds like a cool place. Watching someone else play an arcade game and potentially learning some new tricks in the process or seeing a level that you'd never seen before used to be a big deal. I have fond memories of watching someone play Arkanoid many years ago, and being amazed when they reached stages I had never seen before! Thank you for watching and commenting. :)
Fun fact. As of mame 0.239 the Nintendo playchoice 10 emulation is finally fixed. They fixed a bug to where you couldn't resume a game after the time ran out. It now runs correctly so that when you run out of time and add a credit and restart, it picks up exactly where you left off.
Watching this video reminds me of one of your old videos where you went to buy a couple play choice ten games and came across a European NES that tried buying from someone earlier but didn't because he was only selling things in bulk!
It blows my mind how long ago that was now! The games I got that day are in my Play Choice 10 right now. Those were some truly awesome days for retro collecting, and I really miss how it used to be. Thank you very much for being a fan for so many years! :)
I love that show! They used to have some interesting prizes. Imagine playing the Classic Concentration NES game on the PlayChoice 10? :o Thank you for watching and commenting! :)
My (now defunct) local arcade called buttons arcade, had a bartop Playchoice 10 on the counter and you could put tokens in it to play. I usually would sit at the counter and play it while I was chowing down a slice of pizza and some SOBE to drink. 🙂
Very cool! I've unfortunately never come across a PlayChoice in the wild, but did find a Vs Super Mario Bros. cabinet by accident in the 90s. Thank you for watching and commenting. :)
My favorite corner store that regularly cycled cabinets had one of these show up with Mario 3 on it. That was before the wide release and it was amazing game to see and play.
It must have been amazing to give the game a play before the NES cartridge had been released! I would be so tempted to spend way too much trying to beat the entire game. I wish there was a game worth going to the arcades to play these days. Thank you so much for watching and commenting! :)
My first time playing SMB3 was on a playchoice 10 (stand up version) at Aladin's castle arcade in a mall. I was there every week spending my allowance but could never beat it until I got a copy for NES. It was too long of a game to master with playtime being restricted to the number of tokens you can afford. Still fond nostalgic memories though.
That's awesome that you had the chance to experience SMB3 on the PlayChoice 10! It really isn't a game that you can beat just like that. But it sure is fun trying! Thank you so much for watching and commenting. :)
I saw one of those at a Reptile museum when I was 10. It was back in 2001. I hear some of them have TMNT on it. It was also seen in the movie The Wizard. Imagine they did one for the SNES and put in Mario World, DKC, SF II. That would be lit
That's awesome that even in the 2000s you could still find them around! There was an arcade machine called the Nintendo Super System which was similar to the PlayChoice but for SNES games. It's much more obscure though! Thank you for watching. :)
Thank you for watching! I totally hear you when it comes to RUclips being horrible for giving notifications. I usually tweet on Twitter when new videos go up as well, if you're on there (and if you're not I would absolutely understand because personally I don't really like Twitter myself :P).
@@TheGameDisplay But don't you agree that's ridiculous that I would have to go to a third-party just to get notifications for RUclips. I just don't understand why they would strip emails out.
Man, those joysticks look painful. If you could attach some kind of ball on the top it would me much more comfortable to play. Nice machine! Never seen one of those in Spain back in the day :)
The full-size PlayChoice 10 arcade cabinet has more traditional sticks with a ball on top. The smaller sticks on the tabeltop version do seem very bizarre at first, although after using them you might change your mind! I was definitely surprised with how well they controlled when I first used them. Thank you for watching and commenting! :)
Good job on the videos as always my friend if I am not mistaken wasn't the Playchoice 10 popular in diners and cafes back in the 80s hard to remember keep up the awesome work I hope you have an awesome night I am going to play some Sonic the Hedgehog funny thing about that I could not make it past the Labryinth Zone kind of embrassing I know lol take care my friend sorry if I am late on commenting i had a busy day today
Thank you very much for watching and commenting, Jake! I would have loved to have come across this in a diner or restaurant back in the day. I miss when you could visit random locations and come across arcade machines unexpectedly! Take care, and have fun playing Sonic!
A while back we were talking about wireless Akklaim NES controllers, and a version I had... well I found the adaptor after some searching. I'm pretty sure I will locate the controller itself. When I do I will show you!
Arcade Cousins : Many of the PlayChoice-10 games were arcade ports and must have paled in comparison if the real arcade machine was present in that arcade. 1942, Double Dragon, Gauntlet, Gradius, and TMNT II would have looked very weak next to their popular arcade counterparts. Baseball Stars, Double Dribble, The two Contra games, Kung Fu (as Kung Fu Master), Mario Bros., Ninja Gaiden, Rush 'n Attack, Tecmo Bowl, Track and Field, and Trojan also came from arcade machines. Rygar had an arcade namesake and Castlevania had a loose arcade translation, but they were quite different from the PlayChoice-10 games. Obviously, Pin Bot would pale in comparison to a real Pin Bot pinball table, widely recognized as a classic table. Nintendo also had several standalone Vs. System arcade cabinet machines. Balloon Fight, Baseball, Castlevania, Dr. Mario, Duck Hunt, Excitebike, Golf, The Goonies, Gradius, Hogan's Alley, Super Mario Bros and Volleyball all had a Vs. System equivalent. For the early games, the Vs. System versions would often have new features and more graphics compared to the PlayChoice-10 or NES versions. The Vs. System versions were always harder. Note that the PlayChoice-10 has a reasonable selection of games throughout the NES's lifespan. The biggest years of the NES, 1987-1991, are very well represented. By contrast, the Vs. System had very few games released for it that were released on the NES or Famicom after 1987. Of course, the PlayChoice-10 had several advantages over the Vs. System. The PlayChoice-10 PCB could hold ten games, a Vs. System Board could hold a maximum of two. The PlayChoice-10 offered arcade owners a lot more bang for their buck.
Now you just need to get a Nintendo Red Tent Cabinet! I like that table top. Ive seen one guy have a double stand up where each crt is angled away from eachother. Hope you under stand lol
Never heard or seen these before. Really cool arcade machine. I feel like its gotta be worth some money now. It's a shame arcades are kinda a thing of the past.
Thank you very much! I really miss arcades. I have fond memories of going to a few local ones during the early 90s, which disappeared by the time the 2000s came around. Hopefully someday there will be a great arcade revival!
I would tap a cartridge addspter some were on the cabinet with out drilling and tap that slot into one ports than ad a A and B select switch onto it.So that you can use 10 chips or select the cart slot than play carts.
Okay it uses custom chips but at the very least this would solve the problem the playchoice that use regular carts have with certain games that use custom effects
That must have been interesting! It would have been neat when you later had the chance to play the games you sampled on the PlayChoice. Thanks for watching! :)
@@TheGameDisplay It was awesome. Even better that I was out of state on the way to my aunt's where my cousin had an NES. I was immediately and forever in love. Thanks for the videos. I've been watching for many years.
@@et7313 I have so many fond memories of playing the NES at all sorts of places when I was a kid. Back before everything was so connected via the internet, it was really special to meet someone else who owned a console and connect over video games. Thank you very much for your support! :)
I've never seen one of these when I was a kid. It would have been fun to have one. Does Mario handle fine with an arcade stick? I've never tried it, but I've always assumed 2D platformers handle better with a D-pad.

Lookin back now this is total greed by Nintendo. They have a way of not making it appear like that but once u think about it, its very devious. As he said, with this machine, it was no longer about skill. before you could play quite a bit of time if u were good at the game, in this product, no matter how good you were, u had to fork over money to play. and Nintendo KNEW the hype was through the roof for the game, so they put it on this to cash in on it.
Nintendo also did experimental marketing in the Arcade with these PlayerChoice machines. One of the best examples is Super Mario 3 was released the arcade version summer of 89 and released the NES home Console version 6 months later. So it was also a literal hype machine for future releases.
