Insanely rare to see some new James Brown footage.
Amen!
I’m in tears 🥺watching this. When music had soul. Todays music is for zombies
JB and the coldest, tightest band layin down the SERIOUS FUNK!✊
I just want to know how these people in the audience can just stand there, with James Fn Brown and his group working their asses off. I wouldn’t take that mess
Billy don't take no mess?
Since 1971 I saw James Brown about 100 times in concert he’s my all-time favorite singer. And when I would go to his concert my eyes would be on the stage the whole time I didn’t go there to move around too much and dance and miss any of the action.
Because for those Midnight Special tapings, they were there for HOURS and saw a lot more music than the 90 minutes we saw on TV. I know this episode also featured the O’Jays. They surely could throw down, too. As you can see, it was also standing room only, or you sat on the floor. By the time James played these two songs (he did his whole set, by the way), I’m sure the audience was FRIED!!
Watch James Brown's set at ABC's "In Concert" from the same year. The audience was LIT!!!! And it was a much funkier set.
Also, I hate to admit it, but I think that crowd was there to see The O'Jays more than JB.
James Brown's stage for his set was on one end of the room, and The O'Jays' stage was on the opposite end, technically the front of the house. JB was basically playing to the back of the room for The O'Jays' crowd, possibly.
Like all of James’ live performances, it’s amazing.
RIGHT ON MIDNIGHT SPECIAL!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
This is soooo good! GFOS!
Yall hittin' them archives!! I thought I've seen all of the JB footage!! First the Johnny Carson appearance..now this!! I kinda figured there was a whole episode🔥💪
AWESOME POST! LOVE FRESH, NEW JB MATERIAL! Thanks 🙏🏾!
Maybe you should write another book 😄
Smokin' hot 🔥
Did Mr. Brown just do a full hour by himself on this show?? So far I’ve seen from this episode: “Payback”, “My Thang”, “Papa/No Mess”, “Hell” “Cold Sweat/I can’t stand it/Papa’s Bag”. All that’s left is the ballads and u have a full concert.
He also did a full kilo by himself on this show…….❄️❄️❄️
@@ghanasoul
A kilogram of cocaine.
@@benjaminperez7328If you don't have something positive or informative to say, just shut up. What a fool!
@@benjaminperez7328 you’re ignorant. Mr. Brown was not doing any drugs in 1974. For whatever reason he started to get into some drugs in about 1985.
@@PaulDA2000Don’t bother responding to assholes who don’t know shit. 👊🏾 How are you, man? What happened to our friend, Ike Dyson?
I saw the one and only James twice and his band was amazing .
How clear the audio is and how there's a echo when James Brown sings and the Instrumentals, this sounds like the Studio version of it which is amazing
Pure fire. Incredible tightness and power, JB expected perfection and pushed everyone hard. You can tell that in a regular concert, JB and his band would take these tracks far further. He's holding back here.
I've got a Midnight Special cd but its great to have all this too!
The dancers are great.
GOOD GOD!!! 🎉🎉🎉
Love the audience dancing along with & the backup dancers are dynamic!
A BIG ole’ PARTY, oh Yeah!! 💃
Whoooahh!!! Now we're talkin'! First time EVER seeing this!!!
Funkiest on the planet ❤❤❤
What is the name of the lightskin sister that is dancing in the green outfit? She gets all the way down with the funky sound...
might be Lola Love?
@@UserNameTaken007 Not Lola Love the other one. The redbone dancer.
🔥🔥🔥
Phenomenal!
Sure would be nice to binge watch these shows like the other streaming shows.Releasing these shows in real time is excruciatingly slow. Hope they change the release schedule sometime. 8 years is too long to wait around for these shows. On demand would be best.
最高にかっこいい
"My Thang" should be in the title of this video, as well, although it was just a jam/vamp intro before "Papa Don't Take No Mess."
Pioneer.
Real instruments played by professionals.
Today a lot of 🤡 and computers....
Most "musicians" these days couldn't keep up with James Brown without a laptop and autotune.
@@joequeer3385That's so true. James was an incredible performer! 👍🇫🇷
This species lets itself be ruled by HELL !
Dynamite
The bass guitar played by Fred Thomas is the same one that Bootsy Collins played 4 years earlier. The bass belonged to James, not Bootsy. However, it was purchased at Bootsy's request because he did not have a professional instrument.
Peavey backline
That bass amp has got to weigh a ton. A roadies nightmare.
Hell was on those poor drummers, The Godfather was supposedly a tyrant on them for clams and not playing perfectly. But they brought that stanky FUNK we all love so much!!!! Been called a funky drummer myself, gives me goosebumps when I get that recognition...thank you JB!!
From 3:35 to 3:42 the camera man missed all of his dancing. Off with his head!
Blame the director. Camera operators take their direction from them. They have missed multiple moments of JB dancing over the years.
@@modernretroradio993 Yep.

It sounds amazing, but the band is clearly going through the motions. They're all stone-faced and there isn't even a hint of passion. I have to wonder what was going on then to cause their morale to be so low.
They're focused and in zone 💥💥💥
@@kennethspencer4324 Those don't strike me as "in the zone" looks. Those look more like "joylessly fulfilling the terms of a professional contract" faces to me.
Maceo Parker and Fred Wesley still going strong today. Legends.
Don't forget about Fred Thomas the bass player who is right behind JB in this video. If you looked through the years, you would see him all the times with JB as the main bassist, and now he still sounded great and playing the funky bass at gigs
And Martha High, the longest-standing JB background singer (she's in the green next to Lyn Collins). She's living and gigging all over Europe.
@@ChristianMcBrideTV yes sir!
I think Sinclair Pinckney never got his dues, from 61 to 95 he was with JB, no temper tantrums or quitting like Fred and Maceo did.
Stayed with James through thick and thin till his death.😢
@@francisrobbins1499 Yeah man he had been loyal and nice to Mr Brown. Me and other JB fans consider him as the greatest sax player ever played with JB. Even greater than Maceo. In fact, he played with JB until about 1997 and quit early in 1999 because of his health condition and died shortly after that. It’s kinda sad people recognize Maceo, Pee Wee and Fred and forget about “Pink”!
