I thought the same thing. We brought two Oscars home as babies and the bigger one picked on the littler one. We brought another cichlid home and he picked on that one too. We finally brought an algae eater home, and he was curious but he finally left him alone.

I love Oscar fish I used to pet mines all the time they never bit me even when they got bigger I found a endangered Oscar at pet supplies it lost a fin and was ugly had scars and scratches I took it and nursed it back to health my other 2 oscars at the time was jealous I was giving this one fish attention but I loved all of them so much I had them from when I was 12 all the way until I was 17 then they died it hurt me so much we tried to replace them but it wasent the same I couldn't look at my fish tank the same way after that so its just a empty 500 gallon tank in my living room one day I will raise some more but I still hold grief about the ones I lost

I think that tank is kinda small for those fish, i would recomend an 800-1000 litre with the amount of money youv'e spent on filters i would think an 800-1000 litre tank isn't out of reach.

My brother had oscars growing up, I remember petting them too. Cool fish. He used to make them jump out of the water. I remember when he use to introduce other fish in the tank and how territorial they were. The only other fish that I remember being just as bad or even worse were the Managuense fish. They were some nasty fish.
I bought an oscar with a small assortment of other fish, including 2 mollys ( I was like 11 didnt know any better). He never bothered them, so I thought their aggression was overrated. I was sorely mistaken when I tried to add a beta to the tank, as it went straight from the plastic bag to Oscar's belly. Strange he never messed with the small fish that were in the tank when he was small though, even after this incident those mollys lived a full life.

Chris Thomas Generally you need to start hand feeding them when they are small. They are pretty shy for a while, but when hungry enough they eat. If you have an older fish that has developed his teeth already it wouldn't be a good idea to try now because he'll take a chunk out of your finger.

Wow those are gorgeous! I myself have a Convict Cichlid named Dexter in a size 16 bow front tank. He is very happy and isn't aggressive to anyone but my dad. I must say that Cichlids are one of the funnest fish to have due to burrowing. Dexter will keep me up at night just so I play hide and seek with him!
Nice I'm starting to pet my angelfish here's a tip when you first start have little bits of food on your hand and they will kiss your finger and after doing this for a month they will get use to you and u can pet them without them running away

I had a breeding pair of adult Oscars about 20 years ago, and an adult red devil in a separate tank. whilst they did'nt really bite, they could give you a nasty suck! lol Having said that I did buy them as adults which probably explains why they weren't as gentle as yours are. :-)

Many moons ago I rescued an 8 inch long oscar from a pet shop that had him in a tank barely bigger than he was. He suckered me in as he followed me across the tiny tank then when he had my attention wagged his tail! He was such a big softie and he was more like a pet dog than a fish. He'd only eat food from my hand and loved to be petted to the point he'd swim to my hand and put his side in my palm so I was almost holding him. He wasn't too keen on strange people gawping at him though. He would curl up so he looked like a dead leaf and float to the bottom of the tank. I've kept many fish, but none with the wonderful personality and intelligence of an oscar. I was gutted when he outgrew his aquarium and I had to rehome him. Luckily he went to someone with a 6 foot long tank who'd just lost his 15 year old oscar.

Tiger oscar is one of my favorite fish. My dreamfish is a platinum arowana but they cost more than a house. $500,000.
