  • In addition to sleeping with them, many owners also cuddle their pets and, for example, let their dogs lick their faces. Even if the risk is very low, it remains very real and is even more present in a certain type of person.
People are unequal when it comes to risk:
A survey in Australia found that as many as 69% households own pets and 85% owners believe the pet has a positive impact on their lives, both in terms of mental and physical health. However, 68% respondents said they do not consult a veterinarian, even when it is necessary for economic reasons. What if you could die after kissing your pet? In fact, the risk is very present. Most pets carry infectious diseases that can be transmitted to humans. In more serious cases, the consequence is death, as happened recently to an Australian mother who was infected with a rare bacteria (Capnocytophaga canimorsus) after being accidentally bitten while playing with her dog that she was looking after. for a friend. . The risk of losing their life for healthy people is very low. On the other hand, this same risk is much greater in immunocompromised people and even pregnant women.
Many diseases can be transmitted by pets :
Diseases that can be transmitted from animals to humans are called zoonotic diseases. There are more than 70, most related to dogs and cats. Sometimes the owner can detect the disease by observing the pet's appearance, but often there are no obvious symptoms. Contamination is therefore favored by lack of suspicion and above all treatment. Additionally, contamination can occur directly, for example through contact with saliva or feces, or indirectly through contamination of food, water or soil. Among these zoonotic diseases we find rabies (dogs) or even salmonellosis, campylobacteriosis or even toxoplasmosis (cats). Other animals can also carry the disease, including pneumonia (birds), among others.
Among the measures taken to limit risks, the first consists of avoiding too close and too frequent contact with animals. Other dangerous behaviors should be avoided, especially in children, such as putting their hands in their mouth. You should also wash your hands regularly after contact with pets. Finally, another wise measure is to ban your pets from the kitchen to avoid potentially contaminating food and water.
