    After nearly 2 months staring at this bottle of Octomore 6.1 at the store I had the courage to pull the trigger and purchase it. I HAVE FALLEN IN LOVE WITH IT!!!
    It was worth every penny. There was plenty of smoke and fennel with sea salt in the middle and it all coats this sweet smoked meat flavor. The fist thing that came to mind was caramel covered bacon. You get all of that same taste in the nose as well.
    If you guys don't have it... GET IT! GET IT NOW!!!

    I'm gonna be honest; I discovered this channel through the Modern Rogue, and it's quickly become one of my favourite channels on RUclips. Finding out about a bunch of whiskeys to try and the history of the distilleries has been great to watch, and you guys are the perfect hosts. Just for shits n giggles I came up with an idea for an episode for you guys: The Whiskey Moment. Between my friends and I, "The Whiskey Moment" is where the stars align and the whiskey you're drinking transcends from just alcohol in a glass to a moment of pure bliss. My first Whiskey Moment was with Bowmore 15, the first Islay scotch I ever tried and my favourite to this day. It'd be awesome to find out the whiskeys you guys had your first Whiskey Moment with, or just one that ALWAYS gives you a moment.

    Mooching story time: my manager and I both have a love for rye whiskey, which we found out about each other at last year’s holiday party. Since then, we trade recommendations and such at work in the spare moments we have, but one day, he gave me a paper grocery bag and said there were some samples in it for me. Inside were two bottles (High West Yippee Ki-Yay and Filibuster Dual Cask Rye Whiskey) each with about an ounce and a half left. I went home after work and finished them off for him, as he seemed eager to hear what I thought.
    The High West tastes like a bottled Manhattan, which I love and drink regularly anyway. Interestingly, I get the syrah barrel in the aroma, but the vermouth is all in the flavor for me. Filibuster was absolutely amazing as well, and I do think you both would like it, as it seems like a whiskey that would pair well with a cigar (it has the tangy, smoky aroma of a cigar box, and pronounced tobacco and leather notes in the flavor). All in all, I’m very grateful to my manager for letting me try two bottles that retail in our area for close to $100 each.

    Yippe Ki Yay uses sweet vermouth, not dry as it seems to be referenced a few times in this video. Sweet like a manhattan, negroni, americano, or boulevardier. Not a "dry" martini. Just my two cents and one of my favorite whiskeys. Cheers!

    High West has some tasty offerings. Wish I had made notes when I was tasting a few weeks ago. Overall, I recall it tasting almost creamy...though that may have been influenced by their Barreled cocktails: The Boulevardier and The Manhattan.
    High West was acquired by Constellation Brands last year. While this will help them scale up, it could have an affect on the recipes, so it might be worth stocking up now! :-)

    Today’s post is exactly why I love the whiskey vault. High West moves up in the acquisition list based on the force of description. I should see it on the shelf of my local store by Nov. 1st. They are about two weeks behind vlog release, to store availability. They even have the French whiskey......(the one with the panties comment....we remember all things).....and two young lasses were buying a bottle at the tasting on Saturday. Vlog marketing point....to bad there isn’t a 1/2 sized coster sticker that says, “reviewed on The Whisky Vault”. Some clever hobbit could start tagging selves.

    Hey guys, I heard of a new whiskey offering today called Empire Rye, basically a New York Rye. To qualify as Empire Rye, the spirit must comprise 75 percent New York-grown rye distilled to no more than 160 proof, barrelled at no more than 115 proof, and aged for two years in charred, new oak barrels.
    If you've guys have tried it, I would love to get some thoughts on it! If not, looking forward to a review whenever you get around to it.

    I had to look through your history to see if you'd tried Cooper's Craft. I was somewhat recently introduced to this one, and I very much enjoyed it. You're right: It's smoother than a lot of offerings you two trend towards, but I like to look at it as approachable. I wonder if they made a smoother whisky to help highlight how the beech and birch charcoal filtering affects the flavor. That said, I think I'd love to see a two-pack from them of the same mash bill, etc., and so-forth, with one filtered through their blend of charcoals, and the other through classic oak charcoal. And what they hey! Make it a trio, with an unfiltered third!
    As it is, however, Cooper's Craft makes a pretty decent mint julep, and should be a decent quality bourbon to hand someone who may be a bit shy of more up-front offerings.

  • @TheBioethicist
    @TheBioethicist 7 лет назад +1

    I just realized that with the trio tastings, there don't seem to be any cameos. So the result is, they end up tasting about the same amount of whiskey (Rex has gotten pretty good at finding "comparisons"), but Daniel picks all of them.
    Clever move, somm.

  • @fiftyten84
    @fiftyten84 5 лет назад

    Wondering about all the martini talk when those use dry vermouth, I can only assume High West finished in sweet vermouth since that's what goes in a Manhattan. I haven't had this yet but imagine that's what it's supposed to invoke.

    Ever been to a beer sampling event that turned out to be a whisky sampling one?
    So this is my first mooch experience: The other day I was at local beer distillery in Iceland on a promotion event for a new beer they were about to release. Everyone got a free samples of this new beer to enjoy but half way in I saw an old pal of mine working on the exclusive cocktail bar that was within the distillery. At this time, I had just started getting into whiskey so I thought to myself: "Hold on, could I mooch some whisky here?!". So, I walked over to catch up with my friend which ended with him offering me a drink. I knew this was my moment, so I put up some puppy eyes and asked politely if there was any chance I could get a glass of whisky from the top shelf of the bar. Note that most of the bottles were closed and just for show on this event. My friend looked troubled at first but was then just like "fuck it!". With the keys to heaven in my hand and the knowledge I gained from watching you guys, I had some whiskeys in mind that I wanted to try. Well, by the end of the night I tried Monkey shoulder, Balvenie 16 Triple Cask, Glenfarclas 12, Glenfiddich 15 & 18 and a few others that I can't remember haha!

  • @tolstoy21

    Does High West use a dry or sweet vermouth? I'm guessing sweet would be closer to a port cask finish, maybe, if that's what they use. A sweet vermouth cask finish might also make it a good whiskey for Manhattans if you're really old (or a hipster) and into polluting your whiskey with other non-whiskey crap.

    Since you guys like "smokey, campfire-y" flavors, has your tea sommelier friend ever introduced you to Lapsang Souchong tea? The tea leaves are smoke dried by burning pine and I'd say it tastes like straight up drinking a campfire. Not peaty by any means like an Islay of course, but you still might like to give it a taste sometime.

    • @JimmyLeg
      @JimmyLeg 7 лет назад +1

      I purchased some of that and found the nose far more smoky/piney than the taste. I mean the nose was SMOKEY and PINEY. It makes you not want to taste it. Then you taste it and it's not so bad.
      It is good to have tried. Every thing I try I always think, have I ever encountered this in whisky? It's a sickness. A great, great sickness.

    Daniel, when doing a trio tasting, do you recommend to try very different styles of whisky to get the contrast between them to bring out new elements from each other? Or should you go with very similar styled whiskies to get the more subtle differences? And by the way Rex shouldn't be able to mooch any thing for a month after this week.

    So I've just now gotten I to whisky and was wondering why the lower alcohol contents seem to have more of the alcohol bite then the higher contents. Is it just my personal pallet or is this for everyone?

    • @henryhammond733
      @henryhammond733 7 лет назад +2

      Kellen marler it's really considering what whiskey it is, most cask strengths are aged a little more than the original. Also the original is sometimes only sharper, not necessarily hotter. Sharpness can seem like an alcohol bite, but most of the time it isn't. At least from what I've seen, but please realize I've only gotten into decent whiskey in the past 18 months so trust the more experienced whiskey enthusiasts more than me.

    Recently discovered the channel and loving the videos! 2 things: First, in regards to the cookie/biscuit debate, if you are in America (especially the American south) it is a COOKIE. Biscuits are what you slather in sausage gravy. So shame on you Daniel! I'm sure your fellow Texans scoff in disgust when you call a cookie a biscuit!
    2nd, I was recently gifted a bottle of Dalmore 12 and have really enjoyed it. Any suggestions for another scotch to try that isn't insanely harsh but is interesting and moderately complex?

    i finally tried bourbon and I prefer scotch. are there any bourbons with dark fruit notes? Is that even possible?
    I'm a beginner but I started with macallan 12 fine oak, which i got for a smoking deal. speaking of which, my local convenience store is consistently selling them at that price, $26 for 35cl bottle. should i buy them and store them unopened indefinitely? I kinda feel like doing that
    So far, I've felt that I prefer the nose of most whiskys over the taste. I cant really taste anything other than vague sweetness and the buzz of the alcohol. how should I approach tasting whisky?

      I've been searching for a bourbon I love as much as scotch. Haven't found one yet, but I'm sure it's out there.

      Try high West's Midwinter Nights dram. Exactly what you're looking to buy. It's an annual release so keep your eye out during Xmas.

    The yippeekiyay whiskey is basically an old fashioned in a bottle I believe- rye whiskey, sweet vermouth, and bitters. How can u drink whiskey and not know your whiskey cocktails???

    soooo mightve found a way to be able to send you guys some whiskey. my buddy has property in texas and outside of texas, was thinking send the bottle to his other address then he can just bring it back with him and drop it off.
    also emailed the liquor board. apparently wine can be shipped to texas as long as it goes through a 3rd party shipper that isnt you, a retailer or the person receiving the bottle. they also have to be licensed and the currier that actually delivers it does too. apparently fed ex works. sooo if that does work i can ship it somewhere else to a 3rd party shipper and have them ship it to you guys.
    i mean what good is a whiskey vault if you dont have all the good canadian stuff? heres hoping i can just ship it to a 3rd party supplier, that way i dont have to hang on to a bottle till my buddy goes back down to his other property.
    i guess i could also try filling a wine bottle with whiskey and resealing it.......but id prefer to remain within the boundaries of the law.

      no worries, i just feel bad you guys have to deal with such a backwards law...... AND IN TEXAS? when you guys said that you cant ship whiskey to texas i was stunned. same with costco not being allowed to sell their own brand.

      no winston churchill was I`ll have a Churchill martini. And if you even so much as look at the vermouth, we`re going to have problems.
      you bow in the direction of france.
      youre thinking the other dude uhmmm hitchcock maybe? it was something like i want the light to gentle shine through the vermouth bottle in the direction of my martini. it was a smart ass way of saying dont touch the stuff basically.
      another funny one was, dip the bottle upside down so the cork gets wet then run it around the rim.
      another was put a serving of vermouth in the glass swirl then dump it out and ice cold gin.
      i think i have a problem with history books....

    i was going back through your videos, and here's my expert opinion, as the number of subscribers grew, so did Rex's hair... now is that a sign of selling out? is it to please the mainstream fans and compensate for daniels hair? how long Rex's hair will be when you reach 200k, 500k, a million subscribers???
    my list for challenging whiskys"
    longmourn 16 (too subtle to understand but when you do, MAGIC)
    Oban 14 ( i still dont understand it, sometimes i Love it, sometimes its too bland, sometimes salty, sometimes sweet..)
    bruichladdie the classic laddie ( i struggle in placing it on the map of scotland whiskys, its isla but not really, and not sweet enough to be a highland or spey side etc...)

    • @WhiskeyVault
      @WhiskeyVault  7 лет назад

      It's possible the success of our show is tied to Rex's hair like Sampson. If he ever cuts it we'll lost 40k subscribers overnight.

    Try to find subtle nuance in a bottle of sweet and tangy sauce.

      I'm a Texan so I don't use much BBQ sauce. If it needs sauce you didn't do something right. But I have friends that prefer it (I need better friends obviously) and the sauce they most often grab at my cookouts is a spicy BBQ sauce I make that has a liberal amount of Buffalo Trace in it.
