The SMA starter motor monologue is pure quality entertainment. Like having a beer with a friend while they do a job they really don't want to do. Classic. Loved it.
Right? Reminds me of my uncle, when in town we always go to his shop and hang around him just for the entertainment value of his conversation while he's doing a set of brakes or rebuilding a transmission.
"When I saw the Saint Bernard come in through the cat door..." That may be the most frighteningly vivid and apt description of childbirth I've ever heard. And it took an SMA video to do it. 😁😁😁😁
One of the most entertaining and hilarious SMA videos ever. Of course it was presented with utmost respect to Mrs O. And damn well should have been! Child birth experience reminds me of a place and time long ago when a young Vietnamese woman was giving birth in a muddy ditch. 5 very young combat G.I.’s learned very quickly the value of innocent life and the happiness we gave to that lovely young little mom. We were kids just like her. I’m 74 now, I pray that little girl and her mom are happy and healthy,
You see, this is why i've been subscribed for years now, not only do you learn a lot from your video's, you get a bloody good laugh at the same time! Never change please.
3yrs ago and just as valid. After removing the throttle body I found that grabbing wires to the starter, pushing it backwards away from the flywheel and then tilting it up and out, worked easily. The old starter looked so rough it was ready to retire. The parts desk took the old one. The new starter was just under $100. Thanks again. I'm getting ready to change the rear drum brakes on this 2008 Heap Compass. And underneath the engine there is a bar where the engine mount sits. I have this new part. Watching your videos 10X or more and I feel like I'm ready to crawl under this thing, but I'm getting too fat. It's like a walrus moving up and down a beach. Happy birthday to your 3yo. Can you grab me a part the next time you're at the yard?
"Clean as a whistle" comes from the days of steam trains. The locomotive got filthy from all of the smoke, oil and road grime. The exception was the whistle as with each blow the whistle would be steam cleaned.
idk if this maybe popularized the phrase, but wiki says its been used since the 1700s, and derives from how clear and pure a sound whistling is. beginning as clear as a whistle, transferring into clean as a whistle.
@broomsterm google says comes from beheadings with a sword. A good swing, resulting in a clean cut, caused the sword to create a "whistling" sound as it cut through the air.
Eric, I’ve got ADHD pretty badly. Watching your videos helps me 1) realize that I’m not alone in the constant, rambling, meandering internal dialogue and 2) see what I must look like to other people. Great as always!

Worked on an old large ford sedan several years ago that overheated, had eleven out of a possible eleven coolant leaks and leaky valve covers. Got it all fixed, ran the engine to test for leaks and overheating in their driveway. They heard it running, came out all happy. Went to road test and........the battery quit. They weren't happy at that, but it was obvious the battery was old. One new battery and they were happy again. Mr. O. you did a great job, even cleaned the Neg cable end and post.
Great video Eric. I ordered a set of Mac hard handle screw drivers for ya. 8 piece set. I should be getting them from my Mac guy on Wednesday. Then I will send them out or drive down on Saturday to deliver them.
I pulled you up for the first time, as a woman that doesn't work on cars I am curious to see what it takes to replace a starter. Charged it up and works fine.

Another "educational" video. Loved to hear about your wilder youth. 😂 When I was 18, I had a Ford Cortina MkV, with a 2.0 engine with a 5 speed manual transmission and rear wheel drive. I was with my friends one Saturday night and we were doing burnouts on the promenade in Kirkcaldy, a major town near to where I live. I had my then girlfriend, Claire, in the car and I did this super long, crazy burnout. When the smoke cleared, a Fife Police BMW 5 series was right behind me with his blue strobes flashing. My pals had seen it but I roared off before they had a chance to tell me. The passenger got out of the police car and approached my window. He looked in the car and saw his daughter, my girlfriend, in the passenger seat. He motioned for her to get out and go to their car. I got a very stern talking to about road safety and basically got off with a warning but a condition of it was that I broke up with Claire. The end of a beautiful relationship. 😂
I have a 2010 Dodge with the 2.0L version of that engine, and my power steering lines rotted out a few months ago. I guess I'll be doing a starter in the not-too-distant future too, but now I have an excellent video showing me how to take care of it. Also enjoyed the family stories as well. Thanks for posting this vid Sarah! :D
Thoughtful, insightful, intelligent, funny , and unassuming conversation while you were fixing the clients car. Just saying , was a nice relaxing 45 min of my time spent after a long days work. Thank you...
Eric.. You are actually lucky that you documented the actual tear down and repair on video and you showed the brittle copper braid falling apart... No magic tricks... The starter was ready to fail and it just happened on your watch... No foul or deception...All He has to do is watch the video... Dave
your stories were well worth the video so much ... that i didnt really watch the r&r of the starter!!!! YOU SIR ARE A TRUE MAD MAN!!!!!!!!!!!! LOL !!!!! and yes ive had days like this my self!!!! been mechanic for 48yrs. KEEP ON KEEPING ON!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Get you a 90’s Camry with the four banger. Starter is sitting right on top. You could do the entire job on that car in less time than it takes you to watch this video.
A few years ago I had to change the starter on my wife's 2010 Journey with the same engine. My friend (also a seasoned mechanic like yourself) told me I had to remove the intake manifold to get to it. Did it just the way you did, and had no issue removing the old and installing the new one. Great video!
Hey mister oh, really like your videos. I also like the fact that you just don't shotgun parts as part of your Diagnostics. I've been a service advisor at a high-end dealership for pretty close to 30 years and I've seen a lot of silly stuff go on in the shop. Keep doing what you doing man!
Hey EricO, I always look forward to your videos because of your lil bit of crazy chit-chat and the fact you are an honest man, which is a rare thing in the auto repair industry! Learned a lot, thanks.
Man I don't normally watch videos but this was awesome , I actually learned more about loosing license (my son) and giving birth (my ex wife ) then putting a baby back in the womb .... almost like R/R a starter into a jeep compass. That was excellent . Great job.......
Thanks for the stories about your popo experience. Buuut...I cannot imagine Mrs. O ever doing anything like you mentioned. She seems to much of an Angel 😇.
You made my day with this one. Starters are NEVER in a good place, but do they have to re-invent bad places to put them. My son has a BMW..... yes I know you are not a fan..... and I told him, BUT he bought it anyway. The starter went bad, and I confirmed it with proper testing as detailed by South main Auto, BUT it lives under the Intake Manifold on a 6 Cylinder in-line engine. A whole lot of stuff to remove to even see it, and then it is held in with 2, Special, Aluminum, One-Time Use, Torque to Yield Bolts. WHY.... I mean really..... WHY! Anyway..... your dialogue while changing this starter was priceless. I figured that you must be in the shop after hours, no phone, no visitors, just get her done. I spent many hours in my engine shop after dinner, by myself, Overhauling Piston & Turboprop Aircraft Engines. The peace and quiet, with a lack of visitors with the distraction that they ultimately cause..... Priceless! I could get more done in 3-4 Hours than in 8-10 hours during the day. A warm summer night, with the shop door open on the airport, with the sun setting and taxi lights on, and the occasional Sea Lion barking in the Float Plane base 2 miles away..... WOW, the best working conditions ever. Next best place.... South Main Auto, .... but I don't have that shop anymore..... so.... You are #1!
i ran a shop 20 years ago where a car came in for a service and told him his head gasket was naf he tryed to blame me for it wanted me to pay for good job the small claims courts was on my side .
I did a rear tyre change on a old honda dirtbike once and the customer was back 10 minutes later blowing up because his blinkers didnt work! Ancient sulphated 6 volt battery obviously had nothing to do with it!.
Wow... "watching a St Bernard coming through the cat door" There you have it folks, the birthing process through the eyes of EricO. Lol. Giving birth to my daughter wasn't quite so bad. Awesome story telling this video, Eric! 😂😂😂
Can't remember who it was to give it proper credit (think it was a female comic years ago) describing the process as squeezing a watermelon through a hole the size of a lemon.
Knowing I need to spend a lot to get my starter replaced sucks. Watching this very enjoyable video, just out of curiosity, definitely has improved my mood.
Most. Educational. Video. Ever. If you want to know how to swap a starter in a Jeep, or whether Eric is Italian, or what sort of painkillers Mrs O had in childbirth, or what the O in Mrs O stands for, or how many sisters Eric has, or how many of them are adopted, or how many times he lost his license in his impetuous youth, or the relationship between childbirth and St Bernards and cat doors, this is the video for you! 10/10 highly recommended. Outstanding. 😁
With how most people treat their cars, I've definitely felt like I was being put on the spot with some of the heaps I've done oil changes on. So, how far am I supposed to go with a "free" inspection?
@Jo Blow Mechanics have to eat too ya know! And on the bill at bottom "Shop Supplies" 1- pair new green rubber gloves $12.00! lol just kiddn around here.. haha!
I only scammed a shop once by accident, I got something fixed and I went back the next day to fix something else. And they forgot what they worked on but remembered me and fixed it free of charge and the owner chewed out the mechanic for not checking his work. That's on the list of the worst things I have ever done.
I've been watching SMA for over four years now. I missed this one. One of the funniest I've ever seen! I'm glad that Y-Tube is throwing these older videos in my feed!! Priceless!! 😆😆😆 I hope Mrs. O doesn't watch your videos! 😳🤪🤪
I can imagine Eric standing there with nitrile gloves, a roll of shop towels and a can of Brakleen, confidently telling his wife that he's ready to deliver the baby.
Informative video. Like the way you managed to work your way through the mare’s nest of devices and connectors, extract the guilty party and move on with the repair. I have had one or another mechanic or two call me up with “By the way, this is broken and it was not on the list of what you wanted fixed. So do I fix it or what?” And if I had the dough, “Just fix it and spare me the shock by telling me the estimate now.” It has always worked out for the best. That’s with independents. Dealers are another story for another time. Thanks for and educative video. Best wishes for your grandchildren, too.
Damn Eric sounds like you had a long day! I had to explain to my wife that even though her water pump failed and I replaced it and the timing belt, it had nothing to do with the clutch slave cylinder that failed on literally the exact next journey she took the car on...I had to pay for that in a few ways haha
If that customer knew who you really are then they would have the common sense to keep coming back you tell it how it is and from what I’ve seen from your videos and of others that have told me about you, you’re a respectable honest hard-working individual that has grown his own company with your own hands on learning experience. You’re an awesome person Eric one of the best in my opinion
Thank you for the thorough process and good conversation. Your video was the most helpful. By the way it was Adam Sandler who was in the movie Click. God bless you.
Other than the wild discussions, it showed me exactly what I was looking for in getting that starter out/in, all the other videos said to remove the wires for the starter before removing the starter and I couldn't get my tools back there.
I remember when I was a young mechanic, customer called to tell me the battery in her 2000 Buick LeSabre was dead. She wanted me to come get it and replace the battery. No problem I'll have it done by lunch time. I hopped on my golf cart with the jump pack and down the road I went. Popped the hood plugged my jumper pack on the battery. Climbed in the car hit the key. One maybe 2 revolutions and KABOOOOOOMMMM. I could see smoke and plastic falling down. I thought holy crap I blew up the battery. I climbed out and I found the top of the motor blew off. Talk about tough to go back to tell your pops that we now have to call the customer and tell her she'll no longer need that batter because her motor exploded.
Everytime I watch these videos, I just love more my 80´s Corolla. Replacing the starter is a 10 minute job. Older cars are just so simply to work with and they dont have any "money lights"
A reporter asked Robby Williams how he felt when he saw his first kid born. He answered “ it’s like seeing your favourite pub burn down” like that one.
I can't tell you how much joy it brings me to know I'm not alone. Every time that I get my air ratchet stuck backed against something I feel like the biggest ding dong. And it always happens when I'm working late, tired, and doing that "one last thing real quick"
Wish you were around me for service. Attention to detail and pride in your work is outstanding. Some mechanics would leave the dirt in the throttle body and let it get sucked into the motor.
Sitting here getting over the covid and feeling like crap. Wife and I watched this video and laughed our asses off all the way through it. thank you for makin my day. Honest, talented, and funny mechanics are hard to find.
Welcome to SMA comedy hour with Eric O.! 🤣🤣 I bet ya that Mrs. O's ears were burning! Hey, ding dong, did ya hook up that evap hose? I didn't see ya do it on the video. Just kitten ya! 😁 Spoke at ya later, come on. 😎
I've been working on cars for over 14 years, and when it comes to tools I don't even mess with tool trucks anymore. I had some snap on, I've had matco and Cornwell. They are good tools, but I had more issues with them than I have my other tools. I have harbor freight, husky, kobalt and gearwrench. All of them are old and have taken many beatings and are still holding up and I've never had to warranty them. My snap on long handle ratchets I had to have the gears replaced multiple times. My favorite ratchet I have is my 120 tooth gearwrench. Had it for years and it's incredible. I also love the black comfort grip Pittsburgh ratchets from harbor freight. And hell most of the new tools from the tool trucks aren't even made in the USA anymore. Yet they are still overpriced.

your stories were well worth the video so much ... that i didnt really watch the r&r of the starter!!!! YOU SIR ARE A TRUE MAD MAN!!!!!!!!!!!! LOL !!!!! and yes ive had days like this my self!!!! been mechanic for 48yrs. KEEP ON KEEPING ON!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
watching this reminds me of why I like cars from the 60's and early 70's. SO much easier to work on from that era, esp hate on FWD
I hate FWD cars with a PASSION 👺👺👺👺👺
Keep doing what you doing man!
first time i ever did this,Took me 40 Minutes,I follow your steps and it was a piece of cake.I use my flexible's 1/2,and 3/8 rachet.
Thank you so much for this video Eric, this happened to my daughter’s Jeep Compass. Happy to say she is back on the road!
Mrs. O is an Angel!!! Eric you are one lucky man!!
This dude is a national treasure.
I could listen to you tell stories all day !! Most entertaining starter ever !!
Eric you’re great mechanic and an even better storyteller- real good videos, (lighting, sound, camera position) Thank you!!!
Hey EricO, I always look forward to your videos because of your lil bit of crazy chit-chat and the fact you are an honest man, which is a rare thing in the auto repair industry! Learned a lot, thanks.
Just a simple burnout... at 2am...driving my fathers car....no license....lol
My dad fed all the local cops at the town diner so I never got hauled in just got my ass chewed but good.
Man I don't normally watch videos but this was awesome , I actually learned more about loosing license (my son) and giving birth (my ex wife ) then putting a baby back in the womb .... almost like R/R a starter into a jeep compass. That was excellent . Great job.......
I don’t even watch for the car repairs anymore. I’m just here for the Eric O story telling hour.
Best sma video ever
Eric ! i cant tell you how much i enjoy the videos but love the commentary!!!!! '' the saint Bernard threw the cat door"
Thanks for the stories about your popo experience. Buuut...I cannot imagine Mrs. O ever doing anything like you mentioned. She seems to much of an Angel 😇.
never forget the stupid things you did, especially when your kids start doing them . Great advice Eric
That's not advice--that's nightmare fuel.

What does naf mean?
This monologue was absolutely fantastic. You and Mrs. O are awesome people!
Wow... "watching a St Bernard coming through the cat door"
There you have it folks, the birthing process through the eyes of EricO. Lol. Giving birth to my daughter wasn't quite so bad.
Awesome story telling this video, Eric! 😂😂😂
Haha thanks Cuba! Let me know if you need any child birthing tips haha
@@SouthMainAuto oh no! 1 and done here! No más! 🙅🙅😂😂
@@SouthMainAuto I'm sure that they know....YOU'VE BECOME AMERICAS TRUSTED MECHANIC! I KNOW ID BRING MY CAR TO YOU
Can't remember who it was to give it proper credit (think it was a female comic years ago) describing the process as squeezing a watermelon through a hole the size of a lemon.
@@timothybarney7257 Pretty sure that was Joan Rivers that said that.
Knowing I need to spend a lot to get my starter replaced sucks. Watching this very enjoyable video, just out of curiosity, definitely has improved my mood.
Sorry Sir,
We had to take the engine out to get my wrenches out... 😂
Here’s your bill..
Or here’s the bill for my wrench😂
That’s what happened to his Matco screwdriver
@@YOUZTUBE2000 ... Mac.
J W ok sir we’ll have to double the bill!😂
Customer: "It Never did that before."
Common Chrysler Fiat Product.. money light and corrosion but mainly just being a cheap product they make..
I've been watching SMA for over four years now. I missed this one. One of the funniest I've ever seen! I'm glad that Y-Tube is throwing these older videos in my feed!! Priceless!! 😆😆😆
I hope Mrs. O doesn't watch your videos! 😳🤪🤪
I can imagine Eric standing there with nitrile gloves, a roll of shop towels and a can of Brakleen, confidently telling his wife that he's ready to deliver the baby.
It's stuck Mrs O, time for Big Nasty
🤣🤣🤣🤣😭😭😭😭

Best narrative Ive heard in quite a while.
Best comedy show on RUclips and he fixes cars too.
The quality of the video is like I’m there! Good job Eric .O.
Probably one of the best narratives ever in a sma video. Awesome Eric keep it up. Sma rules.
36:11 What if your kid smells like reefer but says he was installing a Honda CV axle? 😁😁
Ahhh the good ol' Honda CV axle...
And this is how you know we've been subscribed for a while!
OMG, I remember that episode. I've been on the net too long.
Thank you for the thorough process and good conversation. Your video was the most helpful. By the way it was Adam Sandler who was in the movie Click. God bless you.
Eric O at his absolute best, made me cry with laughter, thank you
Other than the wild discussions, it showed me exactly what I was looking for in getting that starter out/in, all the other videos said to remove the wires for the starter before removing the starter and I couldn't get my tools back there.
Stopped by to watch a Jeep Compass video, wound up learning about the birds and the bees. LOL priceless.
Your dad will always be with you, plowing up rocks across the deer plot while you run along pitching the rocks into the front loader.
My grandpa used to say took him nine months to come out of there and the rest of his life to get back in...lol
I've got no idea what language he's speaking, but I really like this channel.
Enjoy your videos, watch them everyday. You’re a funny guy🤪🤪
I've watched a lot of your videos and really appreciate how great a guy you are. This has got to be the most hilarious one I've ever seen.
And it always happens when I'm working late, tired, and doing that "one last thing real quick"
hey johnny cash was sue so sarah aint so bad. you shouldda never told us that lol
Wish you were around me for service. Attention to detail and pride in your work is outstanding. Some mechanics would leave the dirt in the throttle body and let it get sucked into the motor.
That has to be the most random, but also the most entertaining starter replacement I have ever seen. ...."St Bernard coming through the cat door". LOL
Sitting here getting over the covid and feeling like crap. Wife and I watched this video and laughed our asses off all the way through it. thank you for makin my day. Honest, talented, and funny mechanics are hard to find.
Welcome to SMA comedy hour with Eric O.! 🤣🤣
I bet ya that Mrs. O's ears were burning!
Hey, ding dong, did ya hook up that evap hose? I didn't see ya do it on the video.
Just kitten ya! 😁
Spoke at ya later, come on.
