I have respect for anyone who films process videos. The project itself is so time-consuming, but filming it on top of that - setting up the equipment, checking the focus, changing up the angle to make it interesting - I imagine would make the process at least twice as long, not to mention editing all that footage. I love that there is no music, no speaking, not even a greeting. It's not needed. Just the craft and the rustling and ripping of paper and the tools. I find it so relaxing.
Many years ago, I decided to key the book of memoirs my dad had written in to the computer. I was out of work and had plenty of time, but not very much money for Christmas shopping, so I took it a step further and decided to teach myself (without youtube tutorials...it was before there was a youtube, LOL) how to bind books. I printed out the pages, used thick cardboard which I covered with what we used to call "oilcloth" (maybe still do?). There were three pieces...front, back, and spine. First I printed out the book (the formatting of which was a complicated bit in it's own right), then started attaching the pages to the spine using an upholstery needle, which I put through my finger at one point...blunt side first. The only thing that stopped it from going all the way through was when it hit my fingernail. OUCH. After I sewed it to the spine, I also glued it to the spine, then assembled the entire book. I never thought to take pictures of it...this was before we posted pictures of anything and everything on Facebook, since even MySpace (FBs predecessor) didn't exist at the time. Recently, I asked my son if I could see it so I could take pictures of it and he was forced to admit to me that it was lost when they moved. When I got home, I cried buckets. That's one project I can honestly say that my blood, sweat, and tears went in to...and if you think you don't sweat from the pain of putting a substantial sized needle through your finger, think again, LOL. For the most part, though, it was a great process and it actually did destress me most of the time. Thanks for sharing your technique...it was much different than the way I did it. BTW...years later, I decided to give a copy to each of my dad's grandchildren for Christmas. By then, there was a company that was making the book covers with glue already in the spine and they sold a companion machine to melt the glue after basically just sticking the pages in the spine. I went that route...so much easier and all I did was burn myself a few times, LOL. Sadly, I no longer see these covers in the size I would need them (6" x 8") and, besides, the machine broke. Sigh. That's my tale...I hope I didn't bore you to tears!

I literally did this last year and spent 6 hours binding together a jumbo watercolour sketchbook using Sea Lemon's tutorial on kettle stitching as well to learn how to sew the binding. Was super relaxing to do.

This was in my recommended feed, and I thought it would be a cool vid to watch. Man, did I underestimate how I would feel watching this. It was both soothing and energizing to me, and I learned something new! So, in short, I'm glad I was recommended this lovely addition to my day.
I don't understand how people do the page cutting/ripping with a ruler and it comes out looking fine, I do it and even though I apply pressure it rips in the middle
By the looks of it, that ruler has a sharper edge so it might be designed to "cut" paper with? idk but it desperately want one because I've always sucked at doing that method too haha
You need those rulers with the cork at the bottom to help with slippage, and that would help, you can do it with normal rulers but it’s much more complex
I have burnished my pages both ways then just used a metal ruler like she did. My ruler didn't have a sharp edge but I think the fold helped to rip it.
DrKatBun It's actually a special tool called a Tear Bar, it has a slanted sharp edge and you just pull the paper towards the bar and a little downwards while holding down the metal bar. Hope this helps!
I was really stressed and overwhelmed and this was the perfect video to play while I ate. I feel a lot more calm and motivated to get back into bookbinding
I dont really like the whole ASMR thing very often, but the white-noise-ness of this was incredibly relaxing to have running in the back ground while I worked on other things - I must admit that I barely even watched any of the video.
Serene setting, no bright lights, no background music. Love it. Enjoyed watching how much patience one needs to go through all the steps. Will purchase this ruler because I like its width. Gives my fingers more to grip when tearing paper. Suggest you post type of paper for novices like me. Thanks so much for posting.
This is lovely. I was a print media major and I miss working in the printmaking studio at uni- the repetitive aspect of paper tearing and setting type, mixing inks, etc was always so relaxing to me. This video brings back that feeling of calmly working on projects without a care as to what's happening outside the studio.

when i saw it was a long video i expected to just watch it in chunks as i tend to do with long videos, but i found myself unexpectedly reaching the end because it was just so enjoyable and relaxing. It totally didn´t feel like half an hour!

Bookbinding apprenticeship is no doubt one of the best dying trades in this world, i'm glad I actully had the full experience in pairing, sewing, embossing, pairing leather, using animal glue etc.
Lovely, lovely. Nothing like torn pages to make it pretty. I usually make a card stock template of the holes and that way I can punch through a whole signature at once. It saves time. Sea Lemon is great and so generous. I have made several of her techniques to date. :)

As much as I love this video it stresses me out so much. The way the thread just won't end. It probably is different in bookbinding but both my great grandma and my mother would scream seeing how long that bloody thread is.
Tearing the paper along the ruler made me remember how much I would annoy everyone in high school because i just refused to use scissors hahah! This is very relaxing, thanks for sharing :)

Bookbinding is a lot of work but so much fun, I made a couple sketchbooks a while back with a variety of papers and whatnot and even took apart some leather purses I thrifted to make leather covers. Never ended up drawing in them though 😂 I really should use them lol
Kettle stitch bookbinding is awesome! In my opinion it’s one of the easiest and most beautiful ways to sew a sketchbook:) I also think it’s beginner-friendly because when I actually sewed (not just glued) a book I used this bookbinding method:)
My boyfriend writes music, i finally finished making the paper from scratch using recycled pages and im going to turn it into a notebook for him to write songs ❤️
This is what I also call "Unintentional ASMR" I find more organic in its method (for example, look up intentional ASMR with Japenese traditional print making) that's what this reminds me of. Very nice☺
Just a tip I learned from another video, when you cut with a blade, keep the blade angle down. That way will give you a cleaner cut and prevent the blade from sliding up the ruler and eat your finger.

It's not only about the pressure. The angle at which you pull it's about 80% of the technique.

I did this once! It was very enjoyable. I used a straight darning needle instead of a curved one and it was a lot easier for some reason

Ooooooooo nice, if you ever decide to make another sketchbook for yourself I recommend doing a coptic stitch, it'll let you lay the book flat!
Kettle stitch lays flat too! Coptic and I have a love hate relationship (because I'm bad at it)
The coptic stitch is actually the only one I kinda managed (although I'm bad at it) so I'm just clinging to it at this point.
I never in a million years would think this is so satisfying, and yet it is and I'm so captivated by it.

This is what I also call "Unintentional ASMR" I find more organic in its method (for example, look up intentional ASMR with Japenese traditional print making) that's what this reminds me of. Very nice☺

Can i ask how heavy is your ruler??
Just a tip I learned from another video, when you cut with a blade, keep the blade angle down. That way will give you a cleaner cut and prevent the blade from sliding up the ruler and eat your finger.
