    I have a Cairn Terrier that is just like him, even looks like him. He likes to think he's the boss but even though he makes a lot of noise, he has never bitten anyone. You did a great job with this guy. I found this breed is either totally placid or little monsters. I have a little monster, however, he is extremely lovable. The growling sounds vicious but it's a show. Great job!

    As a dog groomer myself. we have to do what the customer wants. we advise them that the dogs should be stripped and tell them it will ruin their coat, however for some dogs the handstripping is simply too stressful and therefore their owners are doing the kinder thing. so dont assume this woman is a bad groomer, shes doing a terrific job and I would like to see every single one of you work one day in a grooming salon its not easy, you lose count of the times you get bitten and scratched. and the owners insist their dog is an angel. and as for the person who said "simply pull out the dead hair" yeah ill give you some of my dogs and you can 'simply' pull out their dead hair. you wont have a hand left hunny.

    • @NYCRhythm
      @NYCRhythm 8 лет назад +5

      Love ur post, Em 1693! If your dog's not a show dog, they usually don't need their hair pulled out manually! Brushed, yes, tortured, nooooo! And it's a no-win situation for the groomer because truth be told they look so much better after they've been clipped.

    • @velvetgloveMD
      @velvetgloveMD 7 лет назад +4

      I was so impressed by this video (and the gentle, patient technique employed) that my instinct after viewing it was to identify the groomer, and see if you lived near me. No, it is not a perfect cairn coat. Who cares? I currently own Sealyham terriers that do conformation --and have only been hand-stripped from birth by professionals (I roll the coat and do basic maintenance at home). However, I've also owned other terriers who didn't show or need a hard coat. Em1693, Julie Stark, etc. are absolutely correct--not every terrier needs hand stripping. Whether the dog's temperment, owner ability, or even cost prohibits it is irrelevant.

    Our Cairn rescue, Moonie still gets ballistic sometimes. He hates the saxophone, the vacuum, and the hair dryer. Those all produce sound and a rush of air?? Probably...But we neck scratch, nuzzle and praise him, and give him treats when he is a good guy. Which is much of the time.. But yes, Cairns are terriers and such high energy dogs..that 'bug out' now and again. BTW He was companion though, to my dear mother, who recently died of dementia at 95. Moon was a steadfast, loving buddy who never left her side. For the three years that we home cared Mom..

  • @NYCRhythm

    Don't listen to the naysayers! You are GREAT with this dog. This breed can get very snippy because biting is their job, & they have strong jaws. I tried to put my Cairn down because he bit twice, but the vet also has TWO Cairns and thankfully explained it was the humans' fault in both cases (strangers to him coming at him screaming while he was asleep, etc)- Also, like most things in life, gray area about the hand stripping. Show dogs, YES; cold/wet weather, probably yes; sunny, dry California, not necessary to hand strip! Frequent gentle brushing is enough! YOU DO ROCK! And have courage to put ur face so close when he's baring teeth! Great job! IGNORE THE HATERS! Four paws and two thumbs up

    Hey you guys with the hand stripping comments, this was a difficult dog who needed to have a good experience with a groomer. He looked spiffy and happy. That's what counts. He wasn't going to a dog show!!

    • @GrisbiNo1
      @GrisbiNo1 6 лет назад

      I think the point of hand stripping is not to make the animal show perfect but rather to protect it. The hand stripping is pretty essential to make the double layer weather proof coat grow correctly, also the natural oils which come through in a "correct" coat protect the dog from skin infections and chaffing winter and summer.

    • @jeremymoorer7033

    • @dirtylittlerockerbaby7832
      @dirtylittlerockerbaby7832 7 лет назад

      I think stripping is barbaric. I'd kill anyone who tried to pull the fur off of my dog! We have him clippered short for HIS comfort, he's a member of the family, not a thing to torture so that he looks nice!

    • @diggetydogdoggetydoo
      @diggetydogdoggetydoo 7 лет назад +2

      These dogs were bred to live outdoors. Stripping does NOT hurt because only the dead hair comes out. When the coat is cut the integrity of the coat to protect is ruined. Especially the water proof integrity. Dogs living indoors, cutting probably doesn't matter. However, that dog will be wet through in the rain where's a cairn stripped will be dry.

    • @dirtylittlerockerbaby7832
      @dirtylittlerockerbaby7832 7 лет назад

      If it doesn't hurt why do the dogs become distressed? I stand by the word of my groomer who states that she is indeed ripping hair from the dog when stripping. I think this is very wrong, how would you like to have your hair plucked out?

    For all those moaning and whining.
    Cairn Terriers.
    "You have two options for shaping his coat - stripping and clipping. Show
    dogs have their coats stripped two or three times a year, meaning the
    hair is hand-plucked or shaved off using grooming knives. This
    encourages new growth and will keep the hair wiry, conforming with the
    breed standard. Pet coats can be stripped too, but many owners choose to
    clip the hair short instead. This will soften the hair as it grows
    back, but clipping will ease grooming requirements immensely."
    We clip ours, and it still grows back wiry. BTW, he won a couple of local shows in his younger days.

    Ok so amazing job with that dog! The problem was he was insecure probably, no offense owners, but he didn't get alot of experience when he was younger. When people get puppies that's the main thing to work with them in every situation like seeing a vet or getting their nails done, socialization is a big part of a dogs life. Teach them that they can trust others. So no negative comments to you what an amazing job and you will get so many clients just by handling that dog so well.

  • @GrisbiNo1
    @GrisbiNo1 6 лет назад +1

    This dog breed should be HAND STRIPPED around three times a year (average) They have a double layered coat which is VERY weatherproof, the coarse overcoat is the part that is hand stripped, basically the hair is dead and can just be (carefully and with training in the proceedure) pulled out. The dog(s) don't feel any pain, they often react as humans do to having an itch scratched. It is important to hand strip as when the top coat is pulled away the under coat gets a signal to grow through and in time become the new overcoat. Cutting with clippers defeats this natural process and the whole of the dogs coat becomes soft, wavy and loses it's essential water / weather resistance. Also natural essential oils in the skin and the coat do not develop correctly. Use scissors to trim up the hard to get to places (there are surprisingly few spots that can't be hand stripped). Most dogs are usually more sensitive to having their feet and lower legs touched, Cairns are no exception. Please look at some Cairns in dog shows to confirm the above, you'll never see a Cairn shown with a mechanically clipped coat. They are wonderful dogs, very biddable and co operative, the (like all terriers have stng personalities and while they love to please they don't tolerate any kind of abuse... Why would you abuse a Cairn? If you wnat to bash something join a fight club.
    By the way.. if you can't find a groomer who can or will hand strip (sometimes it is hard) learn to do it yourself. The local Cairn owners club would more than likely advise on getting trained. Maybe even offer the service to other local Cairn owners...

    Yes, why torture your cairn just for sake of looks? (we weren't insterested in shows) We barbered her with hair trimmer (not scary scissors) so she always had short hair in sunny CA. I did not want to torment her ever so i used old toothbrush to get soft fur off and also when she was shampooed, i used the toothbrush also. and it does take off alot of hair gently! For her toenails, we walk her on concrete like surface but if it got too long, we waited until she had some vet care to get it trimmed. (CAUTION: learned from breeder that cairn do not do well with anaesthesia after age 7 or so -- good to know).

    Hand-stripping is the proper way to groom a Cairn's coat, but isn't that just for aesthetic purposes, having it grow in naturally? There's nothing truly damaging to the dog's health about trimming, only his fur's appearance. If a short coat is desired it really isn't that big of a deal. I had a Cairn who really enjoyed having short fur.

    waw your a really patient calm groomer people could learn a lot from you! I have a cairn we dont strip we cut her hair. They are an old breed from Scotland, stripping is a new thing brought in by the kennel club. They lasted hundreds of years without stipping, do you really think farmers strip their Cairns in the 17th Century! it's show dog hockum. As long as your Cairn is happy and healthy it does not matter how you shorten its coat.

    • @bronnyhines2967
      @bronnyhines2967 6 лет назад

      Why shorten his coat, I have a xbred Cairn and I like her in a natural state, I just give her a light brush every day and I definitely don’t like the ‘scissor trim’ look on any terrier breed ... mine is an absolutely loving, affectionate, good watchdog little girl and she loves gong in the car or on the motorbike ... 🐾

    • @GrisbiNo1
      @GrisbiNo1 6 лет назад +1

      Spot on, as to life in the 17th century... well, these were working dogs, they got plenty of burrs and stuff caught in their coats on the job and would have had a good hard brush through to get rid of the mud if nothing else. By keeping them domestically we need to remember and honour the dogs origins even if they are not doing their original tasks, brushing is good and mine certainly love it... the harder the better, like a good back scratch..

  • @lisadangelmaier5372
    @lisadangelmaier5372 9 лет назад

    You handled him very nicely. He is reacting out of fear of being hurt. If you had reacted in a more aggressive or forceful manner and taken it just as a challenge, instead of handling sensitvely, it would have likely escalated the behavior. With time he will learn it doesn't hurt. It is quite possible that he has had some sort of bad experience - such as catching on a tangle or someone cutting a nail short. If he continues to have good experiences then he may one day no longer be unpredictable. He does seem to have good bite inhibition. As a next step you could add in some rewards for good behavior so he starts to find postiive experiences in the grooming setting.

In my experience with Cairns they usually will simply put their teeth against most time not inflicting any damages. I use a trust therapy when dealing with mine as this seems easier for the dogs I've handled. Best of luck! Oh btw if they do sink in it's big damages as their jaws are extremely powerful.

    I object to the name Dog Whisperer, but I am known locally as the groomer who can change biters into groom dogs. I use some of the same techniques to desensitize dogs and gradually take away their instinctive fear reaction. I charge $3 per minute. And I get it. Not often, but often enough to make a difference. That having been said, I saw way too many calming signals to have gotten THAT up close and personal with the dog. I realize a lot of non-grooming dog owners might get the warm fuzzies watching this and want to hire this groomer, but, "hugging" a biter with their head on your shoulder is a great way to lose an upper lip.

    You should never use clippers on a double coat dog or Cairn terrier. They must be hand stripped.

      +Edward Cheek false. they can be clipped. stripped is the preferred show method, but they can be clipped like any other dog. does zero harm to clip them. you do what's best for the individual dog.

      Are you offering?

      I've never stripped nor even had my terrier mix which everyone assumes Carin mix hair cut he's a happy healthy scruffy little dog with an attitude he gets brushed and bathed regularly
      I agree with other comments on here terriers date back hundreds of years and no farmer or owner did hand stripping back then and the dogs obviously we're fine or we wouldn't have the breeds now
      it's just for show dogs and personal preference

    put a muzzle on him and stop playing with his temper, you are setting him up for trouble and it is not fair for him what you are doing to him!

    NEVER EVER use clippers on a CAIRN!!!! At least not mine. Use a Mars Coat King first and then hand strip! If you don't understand handstripping, please don't take any Cairns!

    Sorry but I think this is awful ! if a dog is that worried about being given a hair cut, simple dont do it !! I have combed & brushed my Cairn since the 1st day I had him & he is fine being groomed BUT you do NOT use clippers on a Cairn EVER, he looks a total mess after this ordeal, the cut is dreadful. In the UK we have Professional Groomers who have very small , thin head leads which make the dog stand during grooming, so they dont get a chance to turn around & bite or sit down, so the need to man handle the dog is reduced, a muzzle can be used if the dog does bite. But if the process upsets the dog this much, which it clearly does due to the amount of gum licking the poor thing is doing, its best not to have it done, gentle combing every day will keep the coat in good condition & if they get hot in the Summer there are other ways to keep the animal cool rather than shearing it like a sheep !!

      +Pauline Black I agree with Pauline on this 500%. I own a Cairn as well (Missy). She is 7 and HATES strangers (I didn't raise her this way, I just live alone and she only cares for me). I comb her daily as I watch "The Walking Dead" or "Hell's Kitchen" or whatever. She sits in Dad's lap and I comb her for almost the full hour of whatever T.V. show I'm watching. She loves the attention and being with me in that manner. Cairn's have a wirey-outer coat and a soft inner-coat (bred this way) to protect them from water and cold. They are amazing dogs with EXTREME energy that needs to be exercised off of them/walked off. Pauline may seem harsh in her post, but she is like me and any other "Well Read" Cairn owner. We just hate to see them miserable and done wrongly.
