It's less Frieren learning how conceal her mana (Because Flamme and Serie did the exact same thing), and more the fact that she spent the time between Flamme's death and joining Himmel's party doing nothing in order to stay under the radar.
@@Birthday888 If we get another season, you will see she did not spend all those years in the forest. And she was studying something, it was just another "waste of time" as Serie would put it.
Frieren is the Gohan to Serie's Goku. Tons of potential, but ultimately they don't give AF about fighting unless they really have to. In Frieren's mind, The DK is dead, job's done, it's time to just chill. She's at the point where, even being 'inexperienced' for her age, whose really capable of scrapping with her anyway? Demon generals? They aren't exactly common. Past that, it's going to be an incredibly rare few humans, considering in over 1k years she's only been bested by those with less mana then her 11 times. Meanwhile Serie is a battle junky, but that's also why she couldn't have been the one to beat the DK.
Lernen the first first-class mage who can identify frieren's mana couldn't detect Serie's, something only Fern could. As is the nature of humans, they improve rapidly. Fern the young mage is more of a prodigy than Lernen or any other human we've met so far.
Also, I think even if Lernen EVER saw any instability in Series' mana, he would think "no, I must've imagined it, there is no reason for her to supress her mana" or something along those lines I think he thinks too highly of Serie to even try to find instability in her mana Just like Denken couldn't detect the slight mana detection pause that Frieren has when she uses a spell, if you're not looking for it, the moment will pass you by without you even noticing
@@mrminecraftcubeableFern is a natural, even as a small kid Frieren had trouble looking for her cause her mana control is immaculate. You can train lots of things but this level of sensibility only comes with raw affinity.

Serie is fond of all her students, it may not look like it, but it really shows. She's disappointed that Lernen will die soon even though he's at his peak, she shielded Sense from responsibility by blaming Frieren, she's teaching glass dude, even though she said she will never understand Flamme, it was basically her who told Frieren Flamme's dream when she was a child in great detail. Even though she say it's an inefficient spell, she's most likely the one who taught mana suppression to Flamme, if not, she picked up Mana suppression after Flamme died. the only person I think Serie is truly disappointed at is Frieren, because Frieren never did a single thing within 1000 years outside the forest she originally resided in, she only became active when Himmel sought her out, and then only collected spells for 80-90 years. That's why Frieren knows Serie is not the mage she wants her to be, because Frieren is supposed to be stronger than she currently is.
Frieren was active for 400 years after Flamme died. It's where she learnt all the crazy stuff you saw these episodes and why some demons know her as the Slayer. Frieren was wasting her time on another "useless" skill for the remainder of the time. Which she still hasn't figured out at this point.
@@brunomarques7713Lugner specifically says that she made her first meaningful appearance 80 years ago if im not mistaken and in episode 10 after Flamme dies it made it seem as though she immediatley went into a life of solitude. Also, Flamme asked her to not make a mark in history and then immediately killing more demons than anyone else in history is not very believable. Edit: Aura also said Frieren probably only trained for 100 years and bragged about being 500. That wouldnt make sense if she knew Frieren was a demon killing legend before she even existed
I think its important to point out that during Himmels time especially when he was a kid , magic was most likely only used for fighting . So him saying the flower spell was the first time he thought magic was beautiful says a lot

The episode is called age of humans as a testament to what they talked about last episode how eventually humans will catch up to and surpass the elfs. Liernen was able to see that Frieren was concealing her mana probably through a combination of trial and error plus just natural talent for it but he's old when he finally figured it out. Meanwhile Fern in her 16/17 years of life not only has a great understanding of a skill that took elves centuries to develop and master also uses zoltraak effortlessly its a full circle moment back to the episode about Qual and how zoltraak was a certain kill spell that turned into ordinary offensive magic.
There's also no "certain defeat" or "certain victory", as Methode said, it's more like a game of rock paper scissors with infinite moves, and that's just between mages, when you add in other types of "classes" like warriors and priests the infinity becomes even greater

That was also Flamme's favorite spell. It shouldn't be a surprise to her by now. So that remark felt like it was just to try and provoke Frieren to bite back. But Frieren won't even stand her ground. She just accepts it and walks away. And I think that's what's actually disappointing to Serie. Kinda like how Lernen's readiness to back away was disappointing to her.
Denken did not just move things around for fun, he collected reading material and a mineral sample while talking how an earth mage will improve in three years, the man literally left him homework.
Ngl Serie probably saved a bunch of their lives by failing them. Almost all of them passed because they were riding on Frieren or Denken’s coattails. When they start playing on first-class mage difficulty they would have gotten bodied
From a reader of the manga, I confirm. We're seeing in the manga what being a First Rank Mage entails, and if those people passed, they would have died after a month. Serie did them a favor. She may not be a professed pacifist like Sense is, quite the contrary if we take Flamme's words, but she's no emotionless bastard. She's harsh, but frankly speaking, that's what you need in such a place of power like that. She can't accept everyone, because they would become cannon fodder, and that's clearly something she doesn't want (she said because magic is for talented people to Frieren when talking after Flamme's death, but that's most likely not the only reason, but only a half truth to hide her true emotions).
broooo its crazy you say you want a Denken spinoff because one of the arcs that goes the hardest in this entire series has Denken as the protagonist. Hopefully we get a 2nd season to watch it animated.
I like the mood of this episode. Fern holding onto everything, her old staff, her old teacher. It's also interesting that this is the first time Fern actually says she's Frieren's student out loud.
I love how Fern just outright rejected Serie’s offer of ultimate power. It would be pointless to her anyway because of what she’s learned from Frieren. Fern is based 🤟
Not exactly. If you watch the episode again, you will notice that fern was so mad about her staff and frieren that she could not answer Richter's question: Are you her student? That means, if frieren just gave up on the broken staff, fern might have said yes to Serie
@@matthewk320 i doubt Fern would accept even without her staff, some episodes ago Fern told Sense the only reason she continues to pursuit magic was Frieren, Sense even said that Fern lack passion for magic, so she would not fall for promises of power

The spell is relatively new to elves (only existed for a fraction of their lives), while Fern was born when the spell already existed. It's also the biggest eye opener for some people in the audience who think that Himmel solo'd or that Frieren carried but went under appreciated. The reveal that Serie is suppressing her mana while it’s already that huge is such a power move. God every character in this show is so fukchig cool. Theyre complex and all have personalities and ambitions of their own. So easily likable
no wonder Serie is disappointed in her, she's the only one who can become as strong as Serie and all she does is just fuck around in a forest for 500 years training her mana suppression 😂, gotta love Frieren
In case anyone didn't get the jist of why the fluctuations in Serie's mana were a point of focus , it'd basically just a means of showing us that her mana while being compressed is equal to Frieren's maximum output .
Asian Tiger Mum Serie: "Stop playing around. You need to study hard and learn properly." Frieren: "Nah, I'm going to sit in the woods for a thousand years practicing this one weird trick that nobody ever bothers with."
My read is that Serie want someone who able to see she is supressing the mana, the influctuation, someone who able to imagine the limit of "strong level" ceiling is, but no one able to see mean no one can visualize the height of magic, so once Fern sees it, mean Fern can visualise how peak the height of magic, hence potential. Like Serie said, magic is about imagination
Serie just said it takes more than 1 or 2 centuries to fool demons with mana suppresion, but Fern has so much talent she already did so back at episode 9/10 with the blood magic guy.
It's kinda like Omni man from invincible told Mark. If a being truly did exist that could live for thousands of years it would be very difficult for them to show attachment or emotion to things or people that they will out live.
Quick note, Serie has infinitely more mana than Frieren. They're not even close. The old mage sensed that Frieren's true mana was similar to Serie's. Yet Serie tells us she also hides her mana, and the old mage never found out. In other words, Serie's repressed mana is as big as Frieren's full mana. Frieren is basically less than a child compared to Serie.
Serie has said that unless you have talent (like fern or flamme) learning to supress mana at this level takes a lot of time, that's why serie doesn't like frieren, she's not as good as she could be for her age, because she spent centuries practicing this, her hidden mana does help her beat demons
It's all about lifespan and what you achieve in that time. Fern is a prodigy because she's capable of learning and adapting quickly. That, plus her teacher being one of the strongest mages of all time means that the quality of information is unmatched. Lernen had similar circumstances learning from Seerie but he's probably not a genius the way Fern is and was learning further into his lifespan.
The line frm Frieren about Fern passing is great. "Just as she will fail me no matter what I said, she will pass you no matter what you say. After all, Serie is never wrong." In other words, Serie is trapped into passing Fern regardless, because she can see her skill and knows that she deserves it.
this might not be an important info, but the old guy that Serie was talking to is the same person, iirc, that mediated for Frieren several episodes ago so she can be allowed to join the exam.
Her true mana is surely bigger than Frieren's true mana (after all Frieren is practically a teenager in elven standards, and Serie is probably at least 5-6 times older), but I wouldn't be sure that her suppressed mana too is bigger than Frieren true mana. We really haven't a clue what Frieren's true mana looks like, it's not like we have the certainty that what she showed against Aura was her full power, and really it probably wasn't, she was just flexing there to Aura, there was no reason to show everything, just the bare minimum to make that sadistic bitch fear for her life.
Serie has a more wider mana even though she controlled it compared to Frieren's mana release! Imagine how much mana Serie is holding back from her arsenal! It's kinda scary tbh. I noticed this in the Manga but it was well illustrated in the Anime. Serie is a beast that's why she's disappointed in Frieren because she also has the ability to surpass her but Frieren is just living like a hobo with no intentions of getting strong
Fern detected what even an experienced mage who's close to or nearly on an even level to Frieren almost at the end of his life couldn't. She's gonna be a serious problem.
Frieren is around 1200 years old, Kraft is over 5000 he stated that his great adventure happened 2000 to 3000 years ago, and Serie is over 8.000. Regarding appearance, Freren is a young adult or old teenage elf while Kraft and Serie are fully grown adults. It seems adult pure elves no longer visibly age.
Lernen can't beat Frieren now. What Serie meant was that Lernen, being a human mage, is getting stronger much faster than Frieren. If he had a longer lifespan (lets assume another 100 years), maybe he could get stronger than Frieren, but he doesn't have the time to reach that level. Serie expresses her disappointment because of that.
Serie said that the OG instructor COULD win against Frieren. That don't mean he would. Bro knows his limits. Hence why somebody like Ubel is broken. She's definitely passing, and probably already should have.
that guy could saw Frieren was hidding her power, beeing the only one who could do it after the Demon King, it shows he is exremely talented Now imagine how much talented is Fern that she could see Serie was also hidding her real power by the fluctuations of her aura
I think Serie didn't not fail Frieren on the merits. She just dislikes Frieren even though there is a grudging respect. Serie is basically a Shonen protagonist who never grew up--she has no goal other than the pursuit of strength. For what? She doesn't really know. Frieren is her antithesis. @@tuminhthien8074 I wouldn’t say it’s because of the ambition, because Frieren does have ambitions. It’s more like their ideals on life and magic clash with each other. In a way they both respect each other but they also know that they both won’t truly ever get along

@11:44 naaaaah....remember that Serie said Frieren is MID for her age. All because she spent most her time improving her conceal technique instead of studying new magic. Which is why the other magician said "Who would do that when you can study more magic??". It's also why she has that flaw that was exploited on her doppleganger. Sure not MANY people could exploit it, but something tells me that the First first class mage could
Yup. Frieren is a magic nerd first and a battle mage second.
Fern the young mage is more of a prodigy than Lernen or any other human we've met so far.
tbf to lernen fern grew up with an elven mage that's been suppressing her mana and teaching her how to do it
Also, I think even if Lernen EVER saw any instability in Series' mana, he would think "no, I must've imagined it, there is no reason for her to supress her mana" or something along those lines
I think he thinks too highly of Serie to even try to find instability in her mana
Just like Denken couldn't detect the slight mana detection pause that Frieren has when she uses a spell, if you're not looking for it, the moment will pass you by without you even noticing
@@mrminecraftcubeableFern is a natural, even as a small kid Frieren had trouble looking for her cause her mana control is immaculate. You can train lots of things but this level of sensibility only comes with raw affinity.
@@biazacha she is a natural but she was suppresing her mana because heiter kneew frieren was doing the same, just like with the rock test
The thing that put things into perspective is the fact that Serie said Frieren is not even that skilled as a mage, I'm seriously thinking Fern will be stronger than Frieren by the end of the series by sheer difference in skill(cuz she cant possible catch up to her in raw power, mana or amount of spells)

I love the way they show "power scaling" in this show. It's unique as hell and is super refreshing from mist other takes.
There's also no "certain defeat" or "certain victory", as Methode said, it's more like a game of rock paper scissors with infinite moves, and that's just between mages, when you add in other types of "classes" like warriors and priests the infinity becomes even greater
it has been written all over reddit; Serie restricted mana is as large as Frieren released mana
Frieren is a monster
Serie seems to be a godlike powerful creature
@@TAKAMI-jk6fw I'm fairly certain that it's never been said that "Serie never been involved in battle".
She is literally described by Flamme as "someone who is always looking for a fight".
She only didn't fight/defeat the Demon King because magic is about imagination/visualisation.
Serie is actually SO combative, that she couldn't imagine an era of peace, which would happen if she defeated the Demon King.
@@TAKAMI-jk6fw serie is legit described as someone who is always looking for a fight number 1, number 2 Frieren says she could never imagine beating serie in chapter 126. Don’t cope
So it wasn't Frieren concealing her mana from Flamme's teachings that was her trump card against the demon king, but the flower spell Flamme taught Frieren, which brought her party together so they could defeat the demon king.
In a technical way, ye
This honestly leads me to believe that Himmel was actually the main damage dealer in the party and Frieren was just suppressive fire, nit wasn't Frieren carrying them like she did with Lawine and the water girl, they were all at equal level in different abilities which made a party strong enough to defeat the demon king
@@bbittercoffee Himmel had full unshakable belief that he would defeat the demon king with his friends and bring about a peaceful era. Magic is all about visualization. @@bbittercoffeewe know Himmel did do the final blow and since the Demon King noticed the concealed mana right away…. yeah he was indeed the party’s DPS.

He's done it before, when Frieren was on the bed, right before she showed the clothes-melting potion to Fern.
Serie calls the magic to create flowers useless, but it was that magic that lead to the demon king's defeat😆
well tbf she doesn't seem to care about the demon king existing or not so it might actually be useless in her mind
@@Dell-ol6hb infact, that might make her hate it more, as she didn't want the Demon King to die, as she enjoys an era of battle.

It's also interesting that this is the first time Fern actually says she's Frieren's student out loud.
well she's told people that Frieren is her master before, which is basically the same thing as saying she is her student

Keep in mind, the mana suppression that took the 2 elves 200+ years to master, Fern mastered in her childhood. That shows how much of a genius she really is.
frieren explained it well with the zoltrak, it takes a while for elves to get used to it but for fern it's something that's in her blood at this point
@@mrminecraftcubeable The zoltraak explanation only applied to zoltraak. The spell is relatively new to elves (only existed for a fraction of their lives), while Fern was born when the spell already existed. It's like the difference between a boomer and a millennial using a PC. For mana suppression, it took the elves hundreds of years to be able to deceive demons, who are sensitive to mana. Fern is in her teens and she deceived Lugner.
@@nubmyryeah, Serie has said that unless you have talent (like fern or flamme) learning to suppress mana at this level takes a lot of time
but i feel like the zoltrak explanation fits in this case too, fern learned to suppress mana from a super early age
Spoiler:
Fern isnt even close to mastering mana suppression
I love how seriously Frieren stands when it comes to defending her friends. It's also the biggest eye opener for some people in the audience who think that Himmel solo'd or that Frieren carried but went under appreciated. NO ONE in the hero's party thought they were stronger than the other in the end. They needed to be together to beat the Demon King, and she would NOT take any disrespect to imply anyone person was greater than the other. That's what it means to be a team.

no wonder Serie is disappointed in her, she's the only one who can become as strong as Serie and all she does is just fuck around in a forest for 500 years training her mana suppression 😂, gotta love Frieren
The fact that Fern has the ability to even surpass Flamme as the greatest human mage in history and she's *still* under 20 years old is mind boggling.
In case anyone didn't get the jist of why the fluctuations in Serie's mana were a point of focus , it'd basically just a means of showing us that her mana while being compressed is equal to Frieren's maximum output .
Asian Tiger Mum Serie: "Stop playing around. You need to study hard and learn properly."
Frieren: "Nah, I'm going to sit in the woods for a thousand years practicing this one weird trick that nobody ever bothers with."

After all, Serie is never wrong."
In other words, Serie is trapped into passing Fern regardless, because she can see her skill and knows that she deserves it.
this might not be an important info, but the old guy that Serie was talking to is the same person, iirc, that mediated for Frieren several episodes ago so she can be allowed to join the exam.
oh wow that's cool
Lernen and Heitet are the only two humans we know (as far as I know) that were able to detect Frieren’s mana suppression.
This anime just keeps getting better and better!

Its crazy how Serie's mana suppression is bigger than possibly Frierens true mana...
Absolute monster
Her true mana is surely bigger than Frieren's true mana (after all Frieren is practically a teenager in elven standards, and Serie is probably at least 5-6 times older), but I wouldn't be sure that her suppressed mana too is bigger than Frieren true mana. We really haven't a clue what Frieren's true mana looks like, it's not like we have the certainty that what she showed against Aura was her full power, and really it probably wasn't, she was just flexing there to Aura, there was no reason to show everything, just the bare minimum to make that sadistic bitch fear for her life.
"Damn, we need that Denken spin-off anime"
Wait just a little bit Roshi, we'll get there
This episode was so good I got chills
Serie has a more wider mana even though she controlled it compared to Frieren's mana release! Imagine how much mana Serie is holding back from her arsenal! It's kinda scary tbh. I noticed this in the Manga but it was well illustrated in the Anime. Serie is a beast that's why she's disappointed in Frieren because she also has the ability to surpass her but Frieren is just living like a hobo with no intentions of getting strong
The alternate universe where Frieren was taught by Serie gotta be a crazy one.
Fern detected what even an experienced mage who's close to or nearly on an even level to Frieren almost at the end of his life couldn't. She's gonna be a serious problem.
Tonpa failing the test has me in tears 😂😂
Frieren is around 1200 years old, Kraft is over 5000 he stated that his great adventure happened 2000 to 3000 years ago, and Serie is over 8.000. Regarding appearance, Freren is a young adult or old teenage elf while Kraft and Serie are fully grown adults. It seems adult pure elves no longer visibly age.

Serie is like that to frieren: its been a thousand years and you still play around, when i was at your age, i alrdy slayed gods and devils 😂
Roshi is right, the elves do seem to age like humans until they reach their later teenage to mid's 20, which can be seen on how their body look

Lmao the tompa edit got me good
Bro kept catching stray after stray 😭
This episode made me really like Richter. Bro just grinding his 9-5, but willing to learn and grow as a person.
Frieren passed a whole era to Fern like they playing ball. Top tier assist
3:28 - Nah.... you'll see it on Season 2 LOL
Serie look at mages how Kobe used to look at the younger generation when he was playing "Soft"
8:51 I bet Tonpa wants to take the test for eternity.
Serie said that the OG instructor COULD win against Frieren. That don't mean he would. Bro knows his limits. Hence why somebody like Ubel is broken. She's definitely passing, and probably already should have.
Can't wait for the next arc, it's my favourite.
Editors got a big W with these edits on this episode lmao 😂
that guy could saw Frieren was hidding her power, beeing the only one who could do it after the Demon King, it shows he is exremely talented
Now imagine how much talented is Fern that she could see Serie was also hidding her real power by the fluctuations of her aura
Serie says you need to practice restraining your mana for 1 or 2 centuries to trick demons. Meanwhile Flamme in her 20s.
Frieren wants to experience life, stops to smell the flowers so to speak, and likes magic for its own sake. Series is what Frieren could have become had she not have Flamme and friends to help her mature.
That question about elves ages. reminds me of 'Baby Yoda' Wasnt he like 50-60?
