I bought Chris's Portrait Painting 101. It is the best purchase I have ever made online. I have bought other portrait painting courses online but although I could paint along with the instructor - I could not apply it to my own painting. With Chris's course, you will be able to paint your very own portraits!

I love that you painted your grandmother and how you honored her like this for her funeral!! And you painted 3 more for your aunts ❤❤❤ I’m a beginner now, but I hope to be able to paint nice portraits one day, later on I will try your portrait class for sure!

Chris has such an amazing ability to break the process down in manageable steps AND to articulate in a way that makes the process so much more understandable that he compels me to set aside fear and give it a try. His Fundamentals course was the first course I ever took for oil painting, or for any art for that matter. That was 2 years ago. He gets me painting over and over again, by removing the factors that create intimidation. I’m so thankful for his expert coaching skills. I’m looking forward to signing up and taking his portrait class soon- portraits are a subject I’ve been too intimidated to try. Thank you, Coach.

Wow, thanks for showing all those amazing portraits. All of them but especially those kids, so great! (Partly because it’s a less static pose, maybe). 😊 I loved the story about the aunts. I don’t know why I can’t paint consistently, Chris! All that stuff in “Art and Fear” and “The War of Art”, for a start. Plus some life difficulties. But I appreciate your content, and you are a great teacher! Congrats on 334k subs, dang!

tons of great info I'm learning so much from these videos. Seeing organic shapes as polygonal planes is a great help. in computer graphics it's called a "low poly" model, sometimes you can find reference images by image searching what you're looking for followed by 'low poly'.

I thought you might like to know the one thing I have learned from you which I utterly appreciate. I don't recall which video you said it in, I think it may have been a flower vid, but you stated "If the painting isn't working on a base level, then it's not going to work. Stop trying to fix it or adding to it." Of course that isn't verbatim but that tip stuck in my head and I hear it over and over when I'm doing a piece that just isn't working. So I stop. Toss the canvas and begin again. I really just wanted to say thank you very much because that advice has helped a lot.

Hello, I wanted to ask how did you go about creating the plane model of the face? Is that the correct way to call it? This was very helpful th see the seperate shapes expecially in low contrast areas. I wonder if there is away to automate this with Ai, so far asking it to create a plane face gives uncanny results. Just seeing what other keywords I could use to create something like this from a movie still or any image. Thank you
Your channel is fantastic, found you via Andrew Tischler.

  • @TimRSimmons

One thing I'm still unclear on after watching your videos is how when you mix colors and load your brush, you end up with just a little paint on the end, even when you're not obviously using a bunch of medium. To get paint right out of the tube to mix, especially with a smaller brush it ends up completely caked and I have to clean the brush before I actually paint. You're able to mix colors instantly seemingly just by twitching the end of your brush.
I'm using the Rosemary and Co brushes, so I can only assume you're using different paints than I am, or some technique is eluding me! Thank you for your videos and Patreon!

    • @laaryamartinez

You should try water mixable oils! I use Cobra Artist and they're so nice and you can wash them with Fairy. I bought a set that came with water mixable oil and everything. There's also a cheaper student line.
Acrylic is a completely different technique, you need to let it dry between colors and layers, while with oil you can stack layers just by changing the texture.

5 min and 58 sec in we see Chris printed up a photoshopped portrait image and taped it next to his canvas. This makes the process pretty dang easy, doesn't it? No guesswork. Just mix your paint and lay down the shapes and colors the way photoshop says. Cheating???
