I just use cactus fruit to supplement food after the hunting lodges are no longer enough. Usually comes around year 6 or so when even with a sheep farm spam it’s not enough to support your pop. No mushroom farms or other viable food source so it seems like the best option.
I agree that farms are a great way to supplement your food. Especially once you get all of the bonuses up. I tend to use cabbage farms on my high fertility farms, but haven't tested cactus fruit.
If I recall right pitta bread is actually slightly more efficient. I haven't done MP with my friends on this particular patch yet, so I'd need to confirm it again.
I kind of looks like that, and there is desert in the north west part of my city but most of the ranches and my town center are all on savanna which gives the same bonuses as grassland.
Emirates for sure. Their Sheep Ranches and lower trade fees give them the money to win any early game fights and if you feel safe you can easily invest that money into your city instead.
