Dune: Part One Movie Description:
Dune (titled onscreen as Dune: Part One) is a 2021 American epic science fiction film directed by Denis Villeneuve, who co-wrote the screenplay with Jon Spaihts and Eric Roth. It is the first of a two-part adaptation of the 1965 novel of the same name by Frank Herbert. Set in the distant future, the film follows Paul Atreides as his family, the noble House Atreides, is thrust into a war for the deadly and inhospitable desert planet Arrakis. The ensemble cast includes Timothée Chalamet, Rebecca Ferguson, Oscar Isaac, Josh Brolin, Stellan Skarsgård, Dave Bautista, Stephen McKinley Henderson, Zendaya, Chang Chen, Sharon Duncan-Brewster, Charlotte Rampling, Jason Momoa, and Javier Bardem.
The film is the third adaptation of Dune following David Lynch's 1984 film and John Harrison's 2000 television miniseries. After an unsuccessful attempt by Paramount Pictures to produce a new adaptation, Legendary Entertainment acquired the Dune film and television rights in 2016, with Villeneuve signing on as director in February 2017. Production contracts were only secured for the first film, relying on its success before a sequel would be greenlit. Principal photography took place from March to July 2019 at locations including Budapest, Jordan, Norway, and Abu Dhabi.
Dune was originally scheduled for a late 2020 release, but it was delayed due to the COVID-19 pandemic. The film premiered at the 78th Venice International Film Festival on September 3, 2021, ahead of its international release on September 15; it was then released in United States theaters and streaming on HBO Max on October 22. Dune was a box office success, earning $402 million on a $165 million budget. It was well received by critics and audiences, with praise for Villeneuve's direction and screenplay, the technical aspects, and Hans Zimmer's musical score; the National Board of Review and the American Film Institute named Dune as a top-10 film of 2021. Among its numerous awards and nominations, it received ten nominations at the 94th Academy Awards, including Best Picture, and won the most awards of the ceremony with six: Best Sound, Original Score, Film Editing, Production Design, Visual Effects, and Cinematography.
A sequel, Dune: Part Two, is set to be released on November 3, 2023.

The reason it seems like this movie has a lot of tropes and follows certain common paths is because the book was written so long ago others have taken and sampled from it through the years.
Yeah. Any moment you go, "Wow, they doin' the Star Wars ___?" Dune came first. This is basically what Tolkien is for High Fantasy.

"Why did the Emperor want them dead?" Because, as the Baron said himself "The Emperor is jealous, dangerous man." The Atreides family are getting powerful and popular among the other noble families and building up a very powerful military, so the Emperor is getting jealous and afraid of them. He can't just destroy the Atreides openly or the whole empire would turn on him, so he backs their ancient enemies the Harkonens to wipe out the Atreides for him and no one else will ever know about it.
Until Paul and Jessica survives the hit. There's also the Bene Jesuit plot but you've basically covered the jist of things.

One thing I like about this movie is that it isn't afraid to ask a lot of its audience in terms of dropping breadcrumbs and letting the audience put things together for themselves. Of course, the downside to that is that some audience members don't quite connect all the dots.

I agree to a certain extent, but what's here really isn't very complicated or overly nuanced. Compared to the usual Hollywood schlock, sure, but it's surprising to me when people have such a difficult time parsing what's happening in the movie. The often obtuse naming conventions certainly don't help.

So I'll say this without spoiling anything, Frank Herbert's main message he wanted to express with Dune isn't really the prince getting revenge trope. While that concept is in here the message he ultimately wants to make is this... Be very wary of the people you make your leaders. And he means ANY PERSON YOU MAKE A LEADER. Regardless of what side of the conflict they come from. The book is so good. It is a bit of a challenge for a lot of people to read cause well, it's a thick book. But very worth it. The story that unfolds over the 6 original main books written by Frank Herbert is just incredible.

I'd say read the book or wait for the final part of the film before making a judgement on the entirety of a story. But I'm curious and just for arguments sake I'm going to assume you have read the book and/or seen the second film to complete the story, how did the narrative fail for you? How at the end of the story (not the end of the movie) was this not the idea you came away with? And I'm genuinely serious, I'm not trying to be snarking.
This is the finest and most in-depth take on the first novel (and this is just the first half of the book). The problem with the entire Dune Saga is that it is INCREDIBLY dense with meaning, the plots of the stories will seemingly go to places you don't expect but are also incredibly logical. Frank Herbert is talking deeply about power, politics, economics, religion, philosophy, spirituality, culture, family, and psychology. The story is so complex that you can read the book multiple times and still find new things that will hit you between the eyes and make other parts make more sense. The fact that Denis Villeneuve succeeded so well in conveying all of this is astounding. The second part will be much more action-oriented, and at the same time get even deeper.
If you need context for some of the story, I suggest the channel Quinn's Ideas. He has built his channel on the Dune novels and the lore in them.
What's funny is that in that entire list of topics you just made, you missed the primary theme of the book, as stated explicitly by Herbert on numerous occasions: ecology.

@@HelloMellowXVI The basic storyline is pretty much as old as literature itself, yes. Dune just happened to be particularly well written and came at just the right time, with just the right Sci-Fi twist to that age-old storyline, to become one of the most popular and influential examples of it.
Star Wars wouldn't exist without Dune. It is _heavily_ inspired by Frank Herbert's books. Game of Thrones and The Wheel of Time likewise show very clear influence from Dune. Even a franchise like Warhammer 40000 owes much to Dune.

23:00 there is a reason why he was upset. His meeting with the Reverand Mother in the beginning of the movie explained why he was upset. She was supposed to have only daughters as part of the Bene Jesuit selective breeding program. They were one generation away from their goal and Jessica ruined it by having Paul.

I think he was rightfully upset not because Jessica failed the BG order, but she betrayed him, her son. First off all, he felt that when she left him with the reverend mother and guarded the door, he felt like she was ok with him dying for the case (which is why they showed Jessica so upset and crying, to prove the audience she actually cared). But secondly, which is more important and is straight from the book: he accused her of wanting a son not for the son himself, but to produce the kwisatz haderach; he says in the book (in the tent scene) that she didn't want a son, she wanted a male Bene gesserit, the kwisatz haderach, and felt betrayed. I think they did great in the movie, showing that feeling, especially with the whole Shakespearean vibe of that scene.
Yes however what I think will be further delved into in part 2 is being the KH opens ones consciousness up in crazy and very scary ways, in a way Paul is the first in the line of advanced/evolved humans with precognitive abilities that the book (and I hope part 2) descriptively explains is a very terrifying experience!

The cool part about Jamis and Paul's duel is that his visions showed him *many* possible futures. Their choices led to him fighting and killing Jamis, but there was a future where they became best friends.
So even in a world with foresight, there is free will and your choices are important.
you have to understand what is happening to Paul. He found out through visions that he is the product of a thousand year secret breeding program by the Bene Geserit to create a super-being, coupled with him basically main-lining spice 24/7 because its in a lot of the food hes been eating while on Arrakis and in the air he breathes, caused him to be able to see into not only one future, but all possible futures, like Dr Strange in Infinity War, where he has died in so many ways, and he comes to the realization that the only path he can take where he lives is the one where he becomes Emperor of the universe and a jihad in his name spreads across the known universe, killing billions upon billions.
this all happens in the scene in the tent right after the Harkonnen raid. in the book he is 13. thats some heavy shit to bitchslap into the mind of a kid. i hate that the movies havent really communicated that effectively because how do you "show, dont tell" that? they kind of did when they showed Jamis befriending Paul and teaching him the ways of the desert in his visions, only to die by Paul's blade on their first meeting.
Great books. Inspired Star Wars actually. The original Dune books came out in the 60's.
Pretty much inspired most large-scale space SF that came after it, with the POSSIBLE exception of Star Trek
The Dune book series did for sci-fi what Lord of the Rings did for fantasy.

And the emperor switched up on the Atreides family because they were getting powerful and popular, and he wanted to take them out without being obvious, so he used Harkonnen family as his Trojan horse. Roman emperor backstab type shit

The Harkonnen is being used to blunt the Atreides family, and is being shorn at the same time. The Emperor gains in both ways.
The story is from the sixties, certainly written before Star Wars, and the Sarlacc pit in Star Wars and Tatoone is probably a version of stationary "Dune" worm.
Its not a remake. Its a new adaption of the original sci-fi novel.
Man, I think he’d love this story way more if he knew what was going on. He should rewatch it by himself, I think he’ll see and hear more because he missed A LOT. this is one of the greatest science fiction stories ever told. I love the 1984 film, but this is doing the book real justice, especially since it’s in two parts, there’s no way one movie would be able to cover book 1. A sleeper must awaken!

I actually think it's a lot to expect people to understand a lot of what's going on if they haven't read the books. A lot is briefly implied in this movie as opposed to outright stated and even what is stated is easily missed. Like you said, he should rewatch it, but I do think there's an issue with the storytelling in this film if so many people can't tell what's going on without having to watch it multiple time. It's one thing to have to rewatch movies for the deeper meaning, but another to having to rewatch to get the basic plot.
I think to some extent people are right about Dune being unfilmable. So much of the exposition is internal monologues and trying to fit all the necessary information in a film doesn't really lead to good film making. I do think Denis did the best one could probably do with the material though.
@@RebelWithoutABoss I think you’re not understanding my comment. I don’t expect people to understand the entire plot, I expect them to understand dialog and follow it. He didn’t, because he obviously wasn’t into it, like he didn’t even know the emperors army was aiding the enemy until way after it was portrayed in dialog and visually. This isn’t a bash on Mellow, because it’s not a big deal, but it’s the fact that they say “I don’t get it” about things that have already been explained, I would say rewatch it, they obviously missed things. As for being unfilmable, yeah no. Many books are unfilmable but that doesn’t mean they aren’t doing right by the author and books, or aren’t good. LOTR is a good example, it doesn’t have A LOT of things in the books, but it’s still amazing and a great summary of events in the story. This seems to be the same way, I look at movies like this as driving interest for the books, why read the books when you can just watch the movie, if it’s going to be word for word, scene by scene? Nah, they drive people to buy the books because they liked the story, and want more, which the books have.
@@CChissel I saw part of your other reply to me. You mentioned the other reactors you've seeing understanding the plot better, I'm primarily speaking of reactors, I'm speaking other average viewers. Many of the people I know personally didn't fully grasp what was going on in the film, likewise, even online people made quite a few posts about not being able to fully follow the film.
The problem is partly, how most normal people watch movies and how much worldbuidling is being done in this film which can be a little disorienting I think. People are being introduced to all these weird people with all these partially hidden political and religious motives. For example, despite the movie partially explaining the Bene Gesserite people don't fully get the context of the breeding programs, nor the training processes of the Bene Gesserit, so some of what's going on between Jessica, the Reverend Mother and Paul doesn't fully click with people, so it's this weird thing that kind of throws people off. Granted, more of this may be explained in the second part, but this movie doesn't stand on its own in the way it should.
As for LOTR, I think the premise is a lot more simplistic and easy for people to grasp. I think the movies, even the first film, did a much better job at explaining the fairly simple idea. Ring of power, ring addictive, evil ruler wants ring, hobbits have to go on adventure to destroy ring, ghoulish horsement trying to find ring for evil ruler. Now do that with Dune, it's trickier. People like us already have the back story, so it's easier to follow.
This really is a movie where you NEED the subtitles for all the names and stuff.

I like the fact that the audience isn't spoonfed the plot and need to concentrate in order to make sense of it. Really enjoyed it when i watched it for the first time last night.
Dune 1984 is what happens when someone gives you a massive book and says, "Make this two hours." First version was two 3 hour films, but the studio wasn't having it. For reference, this modern Dune is just the first half of the first book. If you want something a bit faster paced, oozing with style and production design, and with a ton of big name talent... give the 1984 version a go. It's flawed, but pretty fun.
I love the art direction of the 1980s film BUT this film is much more accurate to the novel and overall just a damn good film. Pretty boring for alot of people which I understand it's not for everyone but I love boring stuff lol Bladerunner is the same as well just a film some people find boring or can't get into while others adore it. There was also a Dune game from 1992 that gave changed the RTS genre forever pretty much creating the modern RTS. It was based on the David Lynch's 1984 visually while also adding it's own lore to the series creating a whole new faction. There's also a Dune MMO releasing based on this film so Dune is doing pretty good.
Dune of course inspired Star Wars, mostly A New Hope from the planet of Tatooine to the Sandcrawlers, Moisture farmers, and the drug known as Spice. You can kind of compare The Empire / The Imperium and some characters like Han Solo / Duncan Idaho, Princess Leia / Princess Alia etc. But that's where it ends, Star Wars ventured out into other stuff and has become it's own unique universe overtaking that of Dunes in terms of scale and number of projects. Tatooine itself is pretty Dune.
Bro if anyone thinks Dune is boring they’re insane lmao. It’s like if every scene doesn’t have fan service or laser battles then the movie is considered slow, how does that make sense
that's the reason I didn't like this film much. When I heard Villeneuve was directing Dune, this is pretty much exactly what I imagined the end product being, it never surprised me as a film at all. Lynch's Dune, albeit a 'bad' film that's kind of a mess and doesn't come together very well, had more inspiration and creativity in its Guild Navigator scene alone than there is in this entire movie imo

I don't need constant battles in my face but the fact that this movie was 90% just leading up to whatever is going to happen in the next movie made it boring. I know they have a lot of things to cover and they couldn't have made the movie any better but that's how some people could find it boring.
The storyline may have been groundbreaking at the time the book came out but since we've seen dozens of movies with the exact same formula the buildup/Story doesn't have the same 'Awe' Factor (For anyone who isn't a huge Dune fan)

Yes, the frequency generated by a shield can be heard by any worms in the area. The shields work by generating a high-frequency force field. You can make it impenetrable, but then you couldn't breath, since the air molecules couldn't penetrate. As a result, slower moving items can penetrate a shield.
Yes and even the air can grow stale because the flow rate through the shield is so slow.
this movie was amazing. i was so immersed and it really did not feel like 2 hours and a half.
The last time I felt like this was when I was watching LOTR and the OG Star Wars.
What are the things I really loved about this movie was it's subtlety. Like the part with the messenger, and how sad he sounds when he says, "It's done." In the book, Leto Atreides was very, very popular with the Landsraad, which was one of the primary reasons the Emperor sent him into a deliberate trap. That sadness right there shows that even the Emperor's own servants liked Leto (and probably knew him personally as a cousin of the Emperor), and that everyone knew that this was a trap the Atreides would likely be doomed by...but no one could do anything about.
Quick heads up: the dreams he's having aren't the future that will happen, but possible futures that can happen if he makes certain choices. There was a future where he could have been mentored by Jamis, but he missed a cue or made a mistake that prevented that future.
As a fan of the book, they took out a dinner scene that’s politically relevant was cut but everything was almost EXACTLY as I pictured when reading the book
if you know nothing about dune you should look at a summary of the universe and the houses it really helped me to understand the movie before it came out and prepared me to understand the content more. I feel like the people who thought this movie was boring were the ones that werent educated on the basics of the universe. you should also note that this takes place after AI were a huge problem and got banned that's why they got human computers. I never read the book and I dont know whats gonna happen in part 2 but im so hyped to learn more. star wars is also based off of dune a bunch of similarities. arrakis being Tatooine. Paul being like Anakin the chosen one. spice being a drug lol. house Harkonnen being the sith lol following the emperor

@@needum9212 Not useless, but dangerous, a lasgun hit on a shield causes a nuclear explosion at some random point between the two. Guns were still used at this point, apparently still the "main" weapon of the House militaries, Sardaukar, and Fremen. In the novel the Sardaukar used them during the sneak attack on the Atreides because they didn't think anyone in the palace would have shields (for some reason) and the Fremen use them because you can't use shields in the desert, it draws worms even more than thumpers.

Hey man, thanks for giving this one a shot - and for being honest about not totally loving it. I know reactors often get a ton of pressure to love everything they watch, but it's so much more enjoyable knowing that we're seeing your genuine feelings about stuff (and I say this as someone who DID really like this movie). That way, when you see a film that makes you laugh or cheer or cry, we know it's for real.

in the book at least, that's exactly what the emperor does (keeping his involvement hidden, sends his soldiers not in their usual uniform) and why he's an enemy of the Atreides
The thing with Paul’s dreams is he can see the future but like he said in the beginning not everything he sees happens. Wont spoil too much but his dreams are almost unreliable
not entirely tho. His dreams also misdirect him. Technically Paul did die during his battle in the final scene. His innocence died. He went from a boy to a man.
The people of Dune are kind of like the elves in Lord of the Rings. They're very perceptive and intelligent and have a mystical way of thinking that's different from us. Edit: because they are basically an evolved and refined version of us. Their "post-human" rather than just human like us.
My dude, it's not just scifi that has weird organizations. Real life does too, look at religion. Look at martial arts.
The only difference here really is that we're familiar with the real life stuff so it doesn't seem strange to us.
The Fremen use a process to reclaim *all* of the water from the dead. When you live in a water-free environment and have a resource that's 70% water, you need a better excuse not to use it than, "it's icky".
A lot of the plot comprehension relies on knowing the lore and world building with any film adaptation of Dune. Villeneuve did really well all things considered.
It's hard to fill yourself in on it without spoiling the rest of the story, but the history and setting of the fictional Dune universe is one of the best sci fi worlds. If you get the chance, you should read the book or do a lore deep dive if you don't mind spoilers.
The 80's movie is so damn complicated, this one is the first half of the book and took it's time with it's plotlines. I like how the ships are based on bugs not birds.
Also, this particular type of storyline is off of John Campbell's "Hero's Journey" analysis. Star Wars, LotR, Conan the Barbarian, Harry Potter, and even Beowulf use it.

Arguably, most good stories follow the Hero's Journey analysis. There's another book--the title escapes me--but it has to do more with internal-growth type stories, but it still builds on the HJ.
Dune wont spell everything out for you. it drops hints along the way and buy the end you will understand everything. and you'll understand even more on repeat watchings. I think this makes for a more immersive story. however it demands you pay attention.
Dune is what inspired Star Wars it has amazing lore that I'm sure you will like especially when Part 2 releases.
What u don’t understand is that the emperor and the Harkkonens are working together. Emperor sent the atreides there with shitty equipment for a reason. The empower sent their own men the sardukar to the planet as well.
One very important thing to note, is that a lot of chosen one movies take their inspiration from DUNE, not the other way around. thats why dune feels different. Dune is a very old book, and even george lucas took inspiration from dune. And their blood isn't water bro..lol. It's from the suit she was wearing. The suit recycles water.
I've watched both versions of this and can only remember it as a fever dream.

I didnt get the hype with Timothee until I remembered that my late bestie loved Call me By Your Name which she related to fully as a depressed bisexual former mormon, so i wanted to see but i wanted to read the book first and man the book took me out. So I gave in, and although the film took out chucks of the book, a few characters, im ok with it because it weaves the story so beautifully and so convincingly that you will definitely believe that Timothee and Armie were a real life couple despite them both being straight. the fandom for book/film are HUGE. Anywho, for me his best film is definitely Beautiful Boy. I highly recommend you do a video for that one, because trust me, if you're anything like me you'll have to take a break a few times and cry. Grab your tissues and I date you to tell me that it isnt his finest performance. As a matter of fact, I DARE YOU NOT TO CRY!!

The first book definitely helps to set up the universe, which is why it's quite bigger than the others. Personally, my favourite is Children of Dune
If you think of "spice" as an analog for "oil", Dune makes a lot more sense.
Paul’s visions are of possible future, and the spice enhances the length and distance he can envision. It’s how he learns how to do some things, through experiences he’s yet to go through. Yet nothing is set, like the sands; you can only see the flow, not track every grain.
the only reason paul’s mom was being hesitant in promising to his dad that she’d protect paul is because he was asking it bc he didn’t plan to survive that night and she wanted him to survive.
"She's not that fast." Actually, the Bene Gesserit are all experts in advanced martial arts. One of Paul's advantages is that he has that training as well as instruction from Halleck and Idaho. And these people have deep experience. If you can afford it, spice consumption can let you live to 300 years.

So here’s some things you may have missed, or aren’t covered explicitly In The movie but are covered in the books:
The emperor is not on screen this whole movie. The emperor is the head of the third great house. The other two great houses are house Harkonnen, and House Atreides. House Corrino controls the empire and the emperor is jealous of the love Paul’s father, the duke of Atreides, gets from his people. House Corrino knows that House Harkonnen hates House Atreides, and helps the Harkonnens wipe out the Atreides. That is the whole reason they’re sent there.
The Bene Gesserit is a secretive organization that controls everything basically, thru breeding programs and intense training. They can fully control their body and mind and surroundings, and people around them. That is why they only give birth to women, so they can match each new member with a royal man of one of the great houses. For example, the Baron Harkonnen is Lady Jessica’s father. They go into training as soon as they’re born, and are the best fighters of the universe.
“The One” is the result of the breeding programs, and they can call on all the memories of past bene gesserit members. And they can see multiple paths of the future that may come. The bene gesserit has been at work all across planets to make sure that when their members are in need or stranded, religious traditions amongst the locals can be exploited to the bene gesserits benefit.
Religion is very big in the dune universe. AI took over many thousands of years ago, and the people and AI fought a universe wide war to wipe out each other. Now there is no AI or complex computers “thou shall not create a machine that functions like a human” Replacing AI, was religion and human training. They trained their minds and bodies and their talents to create almost super power like abilities amongst very few people. For example the Drs are trained from childhood, and able to detect physical abnormalities or anomalies by touch. They’re also trained to be fiercely loyal to their family, so the betrayal by Dr Yueh is a very big deal and the absolute last person the family would expect to betray them. That is why he also seemed like he was in physical pain when he was betraying them, he likely was. And the “personal assistants” you see with the leaders of the great houses are called “mentats” they have the tattoo on their lips and the eyes that go white when they think. They are trained to remember hundreds of thousands of complex pieces of information and able to complete highly complex equations and solve problems logically and thoroughly. They are basically human computers and similarly trained from birth.
I enjoyed the book! I also enjoyed the movie, however as long as the book is, this pt 1 really only covers the first 6/7 "chapters". I did however enjoy it. Can't wait to check this out after class.

I wish the movie would have explained the shield thing a little more. It’s why they don’t use guns. The harder a shield is hit the more protection it offers…so they stop a bullet or a fast moving knife. That’s why there’s the ‘slow blade’ line. When they fight they can’t stab too fast. (someone correct me if I am wrong but it’s how I have always interpreted it).
Also one of the biggest concepts in Dune is that there is no magical force, and there are no AI or advanced computers. Dune takes place after humanity had the big war with robots, and ‘thinking machines’ where banned. That meant that people had to fill in the gaps which was done through centuries of breeding and honing skills and the use of spice. They show but don’t explain this in the movie.
George Lucas actually borrowed a lot from the Dune books when he was creating Star Wars

May have been answered but the reason the Emperor sent House Atredis to Dune was a 2 fold plan.
1. The Atredis name was become more popular than the Emperor so it made him jealous and fearful of them.
2. House Harkkenon was becoming grossly rich from Dune and could be a threat also in the future.
So the Emperor sent them to die and offered, in silent, his finest warriors to the Harkkenons to help, at a price - about 30 years of profit from the sale of Spice.
So, he was able to weaken both Houses in one order.
When you see the baron float, it is because on his back is the anti gravity harness, the baron is so heavy he can’t walk. It is like a floating wheelchair for the baron

If Im not mistaken Dune pre-dates most of the popular sci-fi stories out there, and was inspiration for them. Gotta love Duncan, and for those who know... the Ghola will be interesting if we get that far with movies. Hopefully the next movie kills it so we can get a Messiah movie.

All those other movies, including Star Wars and the Game of Thrones Series and books... they all took their influence from Dune. Dune came first. This is the book series that all SciFi since the 60s is based on. Dune is to Science Fiction, what Lord of the Rings is to Fantasy.
You misunderstood all those things I said. When I said it's like Luke Skywalker It was me making an example about the plot so people knew what I was talking about, I even brought up game of thrones too. But it seems all you dune fans misunderstood me and some even got butt hurt about it. I don't see any resemblance to star wars in dune, only the plot which tons of other movies and stories have done before dune.

Part of it at least is the book inspired most all of current day Sci Fi though it has never had the great production or popularity other sci fi has had almost all of it was inspired in some way by the dune books. They are an great read or listen in audio book from.

2. Why did the emperor send House Atreides to Arrakis only to help the Harkonnens kill them? Because the head of House Atraides, Duke Leto, was very popular and gaining more power. The emperor feared he could be a challenger for the throne. So the emperor made a deal with Harkonnens to wipe out House Atreides. They were sent to Arrakis where they didn't have the advantages of their homeworld and were off balance as they were still settling in. The Harkonnens and the emperor's troops could wipe them out, the emperor's throne would be secure, and the Harkonnens could continue running the spice trade.

In the book, it's clear that Yueh knew he would be killed by the Baron. What he wanted was for the Baron to stop torturing his wife. He knew this would mean death for both of them, but it would mean an end to her suffering.

It annoyed me to see you didn't pay much attention to what was said about the Emperor at the beginning. Baron Harkonnen is pretty obvious with those lines "When is a gift not a gift? The Atreides voice is rising and the Emperor is a jealous man. A dangerous, jealous man"
Basically explaining that the whole thing was a set up orchestrated by the Emperor.
You can also already feel that the whole thing seems fishy when you take the time to feel the atmosphere of the "Herald of the change" scene. When the Herald and other nobles from powerful Houses and factions comes to Calladan and signs the treaty for Arrakis. The tone of that scene is quite bleak and dark. Definitely gives off that vibe that this shit is a trap.
This is definitely something that you need to see twice before judging if you're new to Dune. Took me couple of watches to understand everything.
they dont use computers so the spice and other things are how they do a lot of things like the doctors checking out paul , space travel etc, as for fast , that old lady with the needle could likely beat duncan in a fight ..those ladies are deadly

As far as I know there are 15 Books, 15 very long & dry books and this movie only covers half of 1 book. After reading the first book and looking at this movie I can say this movie is moving at breakneck speeds.
Remember the 1st book came out 1965. Star Wars ripped Dune off.
