  • In the summer of 2013 University of Leicester Archaeological Services returned to the Greyfriars site where they found the remains of Richard III. A second dig at the site was necessary because Leicester City Council were about to start work on the King Richard III Visitor Centre, part of which would cover the archaeological site.
The second dig gave the archaeologists the chance to explore a much wider area than the 2012 dig and also gave opportunities to exhume further human remains from the site.
This film was produced by External Relations, University of Leicester.
Filmed & Edited by Carl Vivian

I love how they all talk about “Richard” so casually, as if he were their mate from the pub.

I think that Richard was buried properly at one point because it was reported that Cecily paid for a posthumous coffin. Then the dissolution of monasteries happened and his grave was most likely disturbed. Whoever disturbed his grave probably said “f*ck it” and unceremoniously threw him into a random hole. The fact that his feet are missing might support this theory. His skeleton shows signs of being forced into a position and his wrists were crossed, likely tied together. Well, at least he has a decent tomb now.

This was an amazing dig. I can’t imagine being part of the team that found Richard. Let alone all involved with the scientific part of it.

Everyone needs to remember that it was Philippa Langley, and her alone, that came up with her initial idea to search for King Richard III. All of these following people, including these two individuals, were yes necessary, but they were "johnny come lately's" and "hanger on's." Without Philippa Langley they, or nobody else, would have ever had this job, or even been in this video. It all would not have happened without Philippa Langley. Doctor George Whitehead

Wonderful! "Into The West" song from The Return of the King should play on this section. Richard being buried at the very western end of the choir is so prophetic.

Is it possible the friars were routinely buried outside the church, somewhere in the open air on the friary grounds in an area that is now inaccessible for excavation? Not sure about monasterial burial practices and what would be considered common. That might explain why you're excavating a king and some female bones but no friars inside the church as yet.

It is intellectually dishonest that every presentation from the University of Leicester on the subject of finding Richard III does not start with an acknowledgment that this would never have happened without the driving force of Philippa Langley and the Richard III Society. I understand that the University wishes to burnish its reputation at every opportunity. I think you do not realize that this glaring omission tremendously reduces the reputation of the University. Shame!

I think the large hole was an attempt to find the kings remains which was unsuccessful. The reason no one knows what the reason for the hole is that it was done secretly. Does anyone know who put the R over his grave?

Yeah, they didn't have to excavate the entire priary grounds because they already knew exactly where Richard was.

Maybe now, in 2023, after the truth of who found Richard III's burial site, these frauds can beg forgiveness. Thanks to Philippa Langley for her stupendous research and dogged determination. Thank you, Philippa!
