Thanks for posting this video! I recently purchased an underwater ROV (Fifish v6 Expert) and am looking at adding a unit with side scan sonar to help find points of interest to investigate with my robot. From what I see, this unit would have no trouble identifying small boats and cars but can you make out smaller things like the size of a cinder block? Any insight would be great! Thanks.
I'm still trying to figure out just exactly what the big mistake was that you referred to . I have ran a Helix 10 SI for over 2 years now and love it. Super clear and it works. What more could you ask for? More buttons? lol. All the damn presets in the world won't catch you fish. It takes time on the water, a bit of talent, and good old fashion patience. +Eric Teipen did you watch the whole video? I love the product, my mistake was I should have bought two one for the front with side scan would be great.
"The Big Mistake" was click bait. Folks need to quit doing this. You can spot it a mile away! I probably miss out on a lot of cool videos because they try baiting you in. That's ok though. HAAA!

One caution is do not assume that all the Helix units have the same basic performance and that you are just paying for a larger display screen on the higher price units. Apparently Hummingbird puts in cheaper electronics and transducers on lower end Helix units. I was fooled into thinking that the Zoom feature could be used to offset the lack of larger screen. I bought a new Starcraft boat off the showroom that came with a preinstalled package Helix 5 Chirp GPS G2 on the transom. This Helix unit has a street price of about $250. I was a little disappointed they did not add the DI for another $50. Everywhere you see rave reviews, although most of the reviewers have not actually tested it on the water. It would not have been my choice if I had been ordering a boat, I would have added bigger screen with DI and SI. However as a fishfinder this Helix 5 Chirp GPS G2 unit is next to worthless, garbage in max mode and nothing very useful except depth in clear mode. Does not show much structure and no fish arches either. Actually it is not any better than the Humminbird Fishin' Buddy Portable I used to have. I moved my Garmin 7SV from my Basstender over to the trolling motor on my new boat. Using it in split screen with 2D only on half of the screen for comparison with same size images. The Garmin is outstanding (even on half screen) in showing bottom structure, weeds, and fish. Compared the Garmin and the Helix with just the trolling motor pulling the boat. So is you are buying any unit make sure you evaluate it with the screen and transducer package you are considering.
Hummingbird right on great units great company. They provide you a good price point for a very good product. Lowrance units can't comprehend why they cost so much. Great video
Please tell me why I cannot see my shaded path as I am charting when using auto chart live. Software is updated and is gn4 unit. What screen do I go to after hitting record and what settings to get the shaded area each side of boat to show as I chart?
Well auto chart live is only down imaging so during side scanning it won't work. You should be able to see the auto chart live in your contour map. Go to chart settings and see if it's turned on
@@BendItFishing Good deal... Do the wires go through the ball? The way my Bass Tracker is set up there is no plate and there is a hole extension in the boat rail for the wires. Looks like crap.
Great video. We bought a Garmin and few months later Humminbird came out with Chirp and the Mega Side Scanning. Now I'm kicking around selling the Garmin and get a Humminbird. I am really stuck wheither 10" or 12" screen. Big jump in price to go to 12". Garmin side imaging is not all that great, at least I haven't seen it. I have been told it works good, still don't see it. Garmin support told me "We do not support finding fish with SideVu. It is only for finding structure". Well I guess if it isn't really clear with detail that is a good reason not to support finding fish with Garmin side imaging. The unit has a whole lot of great features and the map recording is excellent.
+Bob Askey the 10" is more than enough size wise. I have not quite figured out how to mark fish while running side imaging mainly because I have been fishing shallow all spring. The mega imaging is really something to love. I dropped a camera and tripod in the lake and without the mega imaging I would have never found it. I have other videos of me finding it on my channel.
Bend-It Bass Fishing I was mainly think 12" because the same case is used for 9, 10 and 12. The 12 fills the screen. Side Imaging the larger the screen easier to spot fish. We have a 5" screen and it is really hard to spot fish. Has great detail otherwise. We fish mainly salmon, Steelhead and Kokanee. Guides here in the Pacific Northwest use side imaging to spot fish while trolling. We do fish Bass and hook them while fishing for salmon.
Bend-It Bass Fishing Have you worked with the map recording? Garmin it is all free even computer software. Is the Humminbird map recording that much better? Also to record and view on computer costs $200 for the card and software. What I find true is every manufactures have Pros and Cons. I told Garmin if the main functions sonar and side imaging aren't top notch then all the other features are NOT worth much.
Hey Josh, is there a difference between a helix 9 chirp SI wth the XM-9-20-MSI-T transducer, and a helix 9 SI chirp mega? Or is what makes the mega is only the XM-9-20-MSI-T transducer, ?
Randy Holder the 9 and 10 are the same as long as the description says so. They are physically the same size but the screen that you see is smaller. As for the transducer they come with the correct one even though the website doesn't say so
they have different transducers, same deal with the 10 HELIX 9 SI GPS | HELIX 9 Series | 409950-1 XNT 9 SI 180 T HELIX 9 CHIRP MEGA SI GPS G2N | HELIX 9 Series XM 9 20 MSI T
Mr. Bend-It, if you buy a second Helix would they both sync up? Could you mark a point on one and have that data transfer to the other? If so, is it wireless? If it's not capable, I feel like it would be a great feature on their next model!
They both would sync (network) together and it would be wired with a hub style setup. You can also share views between the front and the back so you do not need side scan on both front and back models
Agreed, I bought a Helix 10 and 9 for the front and 360 imaging. The problem is when i'm at the front i don't get the charts, or other views i have with the 10. Wish i had bought both too.
Question - so I'm sure it comes with the transducers but what if you need to use one upfront I wonder if the U2 sonar in trolling motor can do/handle all the same
I have 2 boats, no fishfinder/sonar/gps on either, and I catch fish just fine. I prefer to relax and enjoy my time on the water. awesome-looking unit though.
... "and I catch fish just fine" ... That is a relative statement but I am glad you are content and can enjoy your time on the water, that's what it is all about ... These type units are for the anglers that fish waters unknown to them and would like to know as much as possible as fast as possible or to use on your water you have fished your entire life ... They can show you things you never knew were there ... Be it a weekend or pro tournament, the causal or hardcore angler, true information is key piece of the puzzle that can change daily, maybe hourly ... Instead of guessing what is below you or to the sides of you, these units SHOW you what is actually there ... Fish on and wishing you tight lines ...
Sure you can catch fish but the question is how many more or how much nicer fish could you have seen ? I have limited time on the water and don't want to waste a min. Trying to find fish.
Bend It Fishing gotcha. Thought you had the Helix paired with your trolling motor since it was deployed. Waiting on my Corona Check to hit the bank and getting the Terrova and Helix 7 SI G2 since BassPro has them on clearance for $400
Great video. I have the same machine with the platinum chip by navionics, How do I get the best detail from the chart.? Seems like I have not much detail and bought the best chip. I need to see all the contour lines and depths,
+Fishing Long Island what is the increment of the lines 1 foot 5 or 10? I fish some lake that have very little detail and some that have a bunch. Zoom around to different lakes to check it out
Hey man! Thanks for the review. Looking at maybe getting a couple of the 9s. Is the only difference the size between the 1299 and 1699 10? Does it come with the right transducer for HD? Read a review at TW that said it didn't. Also what mount or mounts do you have for it? Thanks!!
+dparel the price difference between the same sizes is wheather it has side imaging or mega or both. I use a ram mount. If you go to their website it will tell you what model to buy. They all come with the correct transducer even though the picture doesn't say so. If you haven't already Subscribe!
I figured it out, start the unit where ever you are and Mark that spot, scroll over the waypoint to where it is selected, scroll down too waypoint number, go right to edit and then you can edit it. Good luck
when you look at side imaging, is everything on the image directly to your side as you see it or is it behind you since the transducers are mounted in the rear of the boat? thanks!
+PJ Jackson they mount them on the trolling motor so you can rotate it and see all around you where you are standing. I would prefer to have two one for the front and back. I use the side scan in the stern to find spots and then mark that area, trolling motor down and fish that area.
I have exact one and lowrance live. I think the lowrance blows it away especially the regular sonar The si is probably better on the hb. The lowrance also has touch screen and buttons
Bend It Bass Fishing thanks for the reply! Putting it on a 16 foot alumacraft that I’m turning into a catfish boat. Figured the side imaging would be beneficial for finding cat as well as finding bait fish.
There is nothing hard about using a Humminbird Helix unit, I have three of them and I love them very easy to use. I don't understand what all the fuss is all about. If you like a different make or model unit tha't fine use it and have fun finding fish and stop bashing Humminbird If I want to pay 2000 dollars for a unit what is that to you!
Decided on the Helix 10 g3n after watching this. Question, can you do side scan and down scan in the same screen so you can see fish below you as well?
You can also run just a LCD screen as second monitor at the front or side of the boat. Of course u will not have the ability to change screens but only a couple of bugs instead.
Cool review man. I have the same boat and a mega 9 instead of the 10 and love it as well. Question I have for ya. I would like to put a 24v trolling motor on as well some time and would like to know where and how u did the third battery? Thanks!
Instead of spending money on a second Helix, why not just buy a second power cord and when you stop to fish, move the Helix up front using Johnny Ray- type mounts?
Thanks ror the great inf0 😢wnd tips as i was torn between the lowrance elite as my friend has a lowrance wich like but like vows o it tòo but think this looks much better n so 8muç
Press the mark button to save the current location. Scroll left right up down on side scan to a rock or something you have seen and hit mark. It will save in sequential numbers
I have the helix 10 and pretty happy with it. I would like to have gps map, SI and DI on the same screen. is that possible. I'm tired of switching screens all the time.
Maybe a stupid question but why not buy another set of cables and just move the screen from front to back rather than spending another 1800 bucks? Then all you're doing is lossinging the ram mount instead of emptying your wallet. Thoughts?
+Brad the ram mounts don't loosen like that, and it would take some time to move it up front every time. I could buy the lesser model and network them.
I think you are misunderstanding. if you have a ram ball attached to the unit and one to the bow and another near the stearing wheel you can simple unplug and move the unit from one mount to the other. That is the whole point of using ram mounts.
Just a question why would you review this product when you said you were to we'll versed in its use ? I am not a troll I'd just like to know about your reasoning
Jeff McGrath mainly to show the first impression of it. Most folks take it out of the box and do not read the manual and would think it is difficult to use. If you watch the whole video I really like the product.
I bought new sensor XHS 9 HDSI 180 T Transducer for my HELIX 9 SI GPS. Instaleed new Versions HELIX 9 SI GPS,Vers.1.46 and Basemap,Vers.1.051. Fishing deepth 4-7 meters. After updating cannot see any of fish symbols on the sonar screen. No fish alarms(alarms-On). I am using 455Hz. What reason could be???
It is hard to make an apples to apples comparison when talking Birds v. Lowrance. I like the touch screen, so in a Bird, that is a Solix, which are pretty expensive, while in Lowrance the Elite Ti gives you touch screen at Helix range prices.
True I haven't seen the Mega imaging compared to the 3d structure scan in person but the mega on the bird has crazy detail. My thing about the touch screen is I know I used to be able to text and drive when cell phones had keys, and now with a touch screen I can't.
maybe you can donate used helix 10 that we can use on finding drowned victims here in the philippines it will help us a lot especially my fire department
Put another Helix 3d unit on the front of your boat and you won't be able to use the transducer mounted on the bottom of your terova or ulterra trolling motor. That transducer is 2D only. There is no really good practical way to put a 3D transducer on the front of a Ultera or terrova trolling motor. Believe me I've tried.
+Michael Cooper the one I have from lowrance is glued on with some sort of silicon glue and it seems to work. I could probably get the Helix one to do the same
Bend-It Bass Fishing The issue is the 3d transducer cable wire working with the Minn Kota Terrova style trolling motor. There are several good transducer mounts out there, but the transducer cable cannot attach to the trolling motor shaft so it flops and gets tangled and easily damaged. I have the same Helix as you and I really like it. Thanks for the great video.
JEV Skeeter 3d is probably the wrong terminology. My bad. Side Imaging and down Imaging use a different transducer frequency and require a different transducer than standard 2d humminbird units. The transducer factory mounted in a terrova or ulterra trolling motor is capable of 2D only. It cannot do Side Imaging and down Imaging regardless of the unit attached to it. I have a Humminbird Onix on the console and a helix on the front bow. The Helix cannot display Side Imaging or down Imaging due to the limitations of the transducer in the trolling motor.
+Michael Cooper I have a fix for that, the lowrance cable is shielded and the original installer left it flopping around on the outside. What I did is I took the cable off and took a Dremel with a sanding drum attachment and ground down both sides without showing any cabling and used Marine Goop and glued it in that channel. The routed it back through the system and now it doesn't tangle.
You say DONT MAKE THE SAME MISTAKE leading people to believe there is somthing wrong with unit but your problems with the unit is 2 less quick access buttons and the fact you didnt buy 2.

ruclips.net/video/XKwD9aEB9XY/видео.html thats my Bass Tracker video pause the video there and you'll see how it works.
As for the transducer they come with the correct one even though the website doesn't say so
Bend It Bass Fishing Thanks for the reply Josh but that didn't answer my question.?? My questing wasn't is the 9 and 10 the same?
they have different transducers, same deal with the 10

Bend-It Bass Fishing That's great. I agree that having the same controls and capabilities would be helpful. Hope you get another one!
Agreed, I bought a Helix 10 and 9 for the front and 360 imaging. The problem is when i'm at the front i don't get the charts, or other views i have with the 10. Wish i had bought both too.
+The SAFIRE Project do you like the 360 imaging?
+The SAFIRE Project do you like the 360?
Yes, really cool tech to see structures under the boat when anchored or using Humminbird's spot lock.
Question - so I'm sure it comes with the transducers but what if you need to use one upfront I wonder if the U2 sonar in trolling motor can do/handle all the same
I think the upfront ones for minnkotas at least only support 83 to 200 khz if you want side scan up front you have to use humminbirds transducer
What is your sensitivity set on to get this much detail?
Medium sensitivity from what I remember, it's on mega Imaging auto range and 20 foot of water
I have 2 boats, no fishfinder/sonar/gps on either, and I catch fish just fine. I prefer to relax and enjoy my time on the water. awesome-looking unit though.
Do you do tournaments
What trolling motor are you running? I have a Tracker 175TF. Noticed you had SI but I haven’t seen a Terrova 55lb 45” with SI
It is the Terrova 55 45" my front sonar is just standard straight down chirp with a lowrance my side imaging from the Helix is off the Stern
Bend It Fishing gotcha. Thought you had the Helix paired with your trolling motor since it was deployed. Waiting on my Corona Check to hit the bank and getting the Terrova and Helix 7 SI G2 since BassPro has them on clearance for $400
Good choice, the motor was deployed just to troll along for the video. You can put SI on a trolling motor I heard it's great for searching
Bend It Fishing. I will have to look into the attachment. Does HB make it?
Yes Humminbird makes a hose clamp adapter check out there website to find the right one
Zoom around to different lakes to check it out
actually saltwater ocean fishing. If you are ever in my area look me up and jump on.. Oceanside, NY
+Fishing Long Island do you have it set for salt water?
I do not even know.
+Fishing Long Island if you haven't Subscribed already please do!
Buy 2.... I wish I could buy 1
Hummingbird makes things so difficult an don't know why , make it like raymarine an lowrance nice video my friend runs these
Need to wrap your boat in some fancy brand names and some shirts with lots of patches on it. You'll catch more fish! LOL
Just like NASCAR!
How do you find enter coordinates from a piece of paper on the helix?
Let me figure out if that's possible, I haven't done that yet. I use my phone sometimes then mark it with the helox
@@BendItFishing haha same, got alot of marks i want to use on the unit though.
I figured it out, start the unit where ever you are and Mark that spot, scroll over the waypoint to where it is selected, scroll down too waypoint number, go right to edit and then you can edit it. Good luck
Found another way maps > hit menu twice > waypoints routes & tracks > options> new waypoint.
How do you like the color shading for water depth and the map
tennesse2010 I really like it if you watch my newest video I explain a little more about it.
when you look at side imaging, is everything on the image directly to your side as you see it or is it behind you since the transducers are mounted in the rear of the boat? thanks!
It's behind you and there is a delay in what you see. Imagine the sonar taking a thin slice in both directions
Thanks. Why do some guys mount the transducer to the trolling motor? What do you prefer bow or stern transducer?
+PJ Jackson they mount them on the trolling motor so you can rotate it and see all around you where you are standing. I would prefer to have two one for the front and back. I use the side scan in the stern to find spots and then mark that area, trolling motor down and fish that area.
I have exact one and lowrance live. I think the lowrance blows it away especially the regular sonar
The si is probably better on the hb. The lowrance also has touch screen and buttons
knowing what you do now. would you still buy that one or something different...
360 Fishing I want to buy another for my front trolling motor sonar. This thing is great
Gotcha. Just looking for something new for mine. Moving the Garmin from the console to the trolling. So up- grading the console now...

Is the helix 7 good as well. It’s more in my price range. Also does this have the fish ID system?
The helix 7 is good as well and should have the Fish ID system, what are you putting it on?
Bend It Bass Fishing thanks for the reply! Putting it on a 16 foot alumacraft that I’m turning into a catfish boat.
Figured the side imaging would be beneficial for finding cat as well as finding bait fish.
The SI is a game changer for finding bait! I've seen whole schools under rafts that I would have never fished.
Is there a good video explaining the differences on all generations of the Helix series?
I don't know, I know they just came out with the G3 which supports Mega360 Imaging but that's the only difference I know about.
I'm stuck between hummingbird helix 9 si gen2 or lowrance HDS 9 gen 3
Well if you want touch screen get the HDS, I really like the Helix.
+John Hinton please watch the whole video. I live this unit. My complaint is that I didn't buy two.
Decided on the Helix 10 g3n after watching this. Question, can you do side scan and down scan in the same screen so you can see fish below you as well?
I'm pretty sure you can, I don't have it right in front of me. It's an amazing machine!
Bend It Bass Fishing haha after posting this I found a deal on the helix 12 so going that route lol
Can't go wrong with bigger! Remember they use a lot of juice!
Bend It Bass Fishing I’ll be running it off it’s own deep cycle, think that will be sufficient?
Perfect! When I first installed mine I had it running off the small cranking battery. It made for a couple of slow scary engine starts haha
You can also run just a LCD screen as second monitor at the front or side of the boat. Of course u will not have the ability to change screens but only a couple of bugs instead.
How do I do that?
Bend-It Bass Fishing I'm not 100% sure with your unit but on my old 898c HD SI there is a VDEO OUT connector. Check the PDF manual for Video out.
I would have waited preferred a review after you had time to completely gotten acquainted with this product. Maybe do another one in a few months.
Cool review man. I have the same boat and a mega 9 instead of the 10 and love it as well. Question I have for ya. I would like to put a 24v trolling motor on as well some time and would like to know where and how u did the third battery? Thanks!
+coachzee20 how can I send you a picture? I will have a video on that soon
Bend-It Bass Fishing here is my email. Nrz00a@yahoo.com. Thanks sir!
Did you get any locks for your helix?
+dparel not sure what you mean, I take mine off when I am not on the water.
I'm not sure why he has the voltage display twice on the screen. Some other function could be displayed instead of voltage twice.
Garmin is my preferred FF.
This is no doubt better than the one I paid $2100 for. But even at $300 my IPad is touch screen. Wonder what the reasoning is behind this?
The side scan and mega adds a ton to the price. The Solix series is touch screen . That's just the price structure.
i am in my garage this winter and i want return on a lake i map this summer with the AutoChart @t i can do
Yes it will save to your device
That`s why I bought the Lowrance Elite TI2 units. The Helix units don`t even have touch screen! Crap Birds....
Instead of spending money on a second Helix, why not just buy a second power cord and when you stop to fish, move the Helix up front using Johnny Ray- type mounts?
I could but I would have to get another transducer and then carefully carry and reconnect it on the water
So was the mistake that you didn't buy two of them? Or was is something else?
That I didn't buy two of them!
Bend It Bass Fishing, I just changed my mind from lowrance to humminbird.
Glad I could help!
Izzy Morgan junk!!!
Thanks ror the great inf0 😢wnd tips as i was torn between the lowrance elite as my friend has a lowrance wich like but like vows o it tòo but think this looks much better n so 8muç
No problem 👍
Nice review thank you
Good video but the title is misleading, made us think you regret your buy.
how to set way point?
Press the mark button to save the current location. Scroll left right up down on side scan to a rock or something you have seen and hit mark. It will save in sequential numbers
fyi full battery is 12.6 volt at 12 volt you are 50% charged and at 11.8 volt you are about to have boat problem if yo make short drives . .
So what is the "Mistake" you made other than not buying 2 units??
That is the only mistake. The ram mount that I was using was a little small I think as well.
I MOUNT MINE ON A 6X6 PIECE OF 1/2 INCH COREON TWO BOLTS STICKING UP THROUGH CONSOL WING NUTS MOVE FROM CONSOLE TO UP FRONT

I have the helix 10 and pretty happy with it. I would like to have gps map, SI and DI on the same screen. is that possible. I'm tired of switching screens all the time.
Maybe, without it in front of me I cannot remember. You could just change the presets
Damn, make a solid point.
I can't decide if I want the mega or not
+Moto_ bro_24 get the 9 inch side imaging you won't be disappointed.
Bend It Bass Fishing yeah I am gonna get the helix 10 just not sure if I wanna spend the extra for mega?
+Moto_ bro_24 if you fish shallow don't bother.
Bend It Bass Fishing yeah I fish shallow a lot but I want to expand more to deeper fishing
+Moto_ bro_24 well at 20 feet deep your side imaging can see about 200 feet total you can eliminate a lot of water by using it. Where are Fishing?
+Brad the transducer would still be mounted in the back, I think your method is possible and definitely save money.
If you purchase three sets of power cords and transducer...
Cool factor
Just a question why would you review this product when you said you were to we'll versed in its use ? I am not a troll I'd just like to know about your reasoning
Jeff McGrath mainly to show the first impression of it. Most folks take it out of the box and do not read the manual and would think it is difficult to use. If you watch the whole video I really like the product.

Lowrance Elite Ti series is cheaper than Helix, and it is touch screen.
Not if you get the 12", the 9" is.
No doubt, Mega Imaging is incredible!
maybe you can donate used helix 10 that we can use on finding drowned victims here in the philippines it will help us a lot especially my fire department

Helix 10 msi g3n vs garmin 102sv ultra uhd
Which one forgot that part lol
Tough question I haven't used the Garmin or done research on it. If the Garmin can be used with Panoptix later then get that because it's super cool
I could probably get the Helix one to do the same
Bend-It Bass Fishing
The issue is the 3d transducer cable wire working with the Minn Kota Terrova style trolling motor. There are several good transducer mounts out there, but the transducer cable cannot attach to the trolling motor shaft so it flops and gets tangled and easily damaged. I have the same Helix as you and I really like it. Thanks for the great video.
There is no 3D transducer or unit.
JEV Skeeter
3d is probably the wrong terminology.

In general, the TI units are faster in response to inputs. This is seen when quickly switching between sonar, downscan, chart, and split screens ruclips.net/user/postUgkxeAxH15LxhjGlg5-CRYqjTGTEH0tbY4vk recommend The Hook units will show some lag on button pushes and screen switching. The big ticket item though is maps. If you install a mapping card such as Navionics or the free C-Map Genesis which has a lot of map detail, then moving around the map with the cursor or when running down the lake can lag significantly on the Hook units, but is seamless with the TI units.
