- The video was filmed at Don Davis Park in Newport. It shows the highest surge I observed. Even if it was low tide right in that moment the water came all the way up to the wall at the Nye Beach turnaround which rarely happens at a normal high tide.
The highest measured tsunami wave height was only 1.3 ft.
I like this side angle of tsunami. Really shows there isn't the regular wave action of up and back, but the creeping up and taking over the land.
You should see that beach during King Tides. Water is up to the sand wall permanently.
I remember that. It was estimated to be about one foot high.
Even though nothing happened, the last place I would go is the beach knowing what's left of a tsunami is heading towards me.
It was fortunate the tide was out when the tsunami surge reached the Oregon coast. Arriving just before crest of high tide would have caused s lot more damage. And possibly caught some people out, causing injury or death.
Some beaches do have cliffs, without beach access close by. If you're out walking, and become trapped by the sudden rising waters, getting soaked is certain, drowning a real possibility. Especially if you fall and the undertow pulls you out.

I just came to visit Oregon an I'm in Tillamook I'm sure theirs no way a wave is getting passed those mountains 🏔️
Thankfully alot fo the oregon coast is up on a cliff with the exception of some areas like devils lake, another thing is just imagine again how much worse it was in japan!
When we were kids in the 60's, Newport had many false tsunamis. We'd rush down to the lighthouse and wait. But none ever came.

Not even an actual tsunami lol if you live here you would know that hole area gets flooded up to the sand wall when it’s high tide. Stop posting things with false advertisement this is just waves we have all the time. 💯
You’re dumb. That’s not the point of the video. This is in fact the wave that was left over from the Japanese earthquake on 3/11/11, aka. a tsunami, as stated in the title. It’s not titled “biggest wave to ever hit Newport” which are obviously the king tides. This is just an educational video to give us an idea to scale what a larger tsunami would look like coming into our coast. If that earthquake was 1000 or so miles closer, multiply that wave by 10.

California doesn't have the geology to produce tsunamis. The cascadia subduction zone will go at some point which will devastate the entire west coast, but mostly Oregon, Washington, and Southern British Columbia

Over history, more than 80 tsunamis have been recorded in California..
@@MaritsView Yet none of them came from a fault in California. I think crescent city just happens to be an area that gets hit by Tsunamis coming from other areas in the Pacific(Alaska, Russia, Cascadia, Japan, etc)
@@barackobama9552 Tsunamis are triggered by large amount of water displacement such as from a volcanic eruption, earthquake, landslides, asteriods.
Now, you made a good point about where some of these tsunami waves could've came from, however any earthquake in sea that reaches over 7.0+ will get a tsunami warning usually 7.5 or over.
California never has experienced such an event as Japan or Indonesia did.
If California was to get struck by a earthquake of 9.0 magitude close to the coast, the aftermath would be devastating.
Even worse is, is that geologists are concerned that California is most likely to get the next big one.
