    I am 57 and got back into golf after 25 years off (only played about 50 times before that). After 4 lessons, I still had power struggles, but more importantly I could NOT get an inside-out swing no matter how many drills we did or how many videos we watched. Today, 5th lesson, my instructor said we really need to focus on the turn...only about 60* noticed. We worked on the turn and although the power was not quite there yet (because of club face), EVERY single shot was inside to out..even the miss-hits. They say you cant go from slice to good golf, but from slice to pull/hook to straight. That's fine..It was so cool to see so many consecutive inside-out swings WITH draw spin "over hook". The Should turn in my opinion, does more than just power. Im going to watch some more of your videos Clay! Excellent job!

    I saw this video while back. But I was only hitting my drives around 260 with a short turn. But when I saw your video I went out and started working on full shoulder turn and it was hard but I finally got it down. Now my drives are averaging 305 to 310. And i am 60 years old. But I have professional playing experience. We are never too good to listen to great advice. Thanks

    I have had a dreadful 2019, the driver has been slicing and I have lost a lot of holes to that slice. Now I have started to get that full shoulder turn and the ball started to go straighter and a lot longer. I live in Sweden so we have winter now but no snow yet so I can still play some golf. Just want to say thank you and you are now the only golf instructor I listen to. You save my day, my golf. Thanks

    I’m an 11 handicap working towards single digits. The main thing holding me back right now is the sporadic slice of the driver into the trees leading to double bogeys. A friend noticed my shoulders not rotating enough and when I focus on rotating more I get good results but it feels forced and uncomfortable and I don’t trust the swing. After watching your video on lifting you left heal to help turn more it really resonated with me. I went to The driving range today and out of a large bucket a ball only lost about four or five to the right. That is a huge improvement over what I had been doing. What is even better is it is simple to execute and simple to remember. I’m very excited and feel like this might be the silver bullet I was looking for. Can’t wait to go try it tomorrow on the course when I play with some friends.

    Hey Clay, I just finished reading Ben Hogan's "Five Lessons" and he says you need to keep that back foot square because if you angle it back like you're advising, you get too much hip swing/weight backwards, which can cause all kinds of issues issues with your swing. Are you advising people to do this only if they can't get their shoulder blades pointed towards the target in the backswing? I've found that I do get into a lot of trouble with consistency when I flare that back foot out.

    • @TopSpeedGolf
      @TopSpeedGolf  4 года назад +1

      Hi, I advise that anyone who is struggling with distance or looking for more distance flare the foot out. People generally don't flare the foot because it's more comfortable and/or more aesthetic. I haven't ever seen an issue with it. You may have issues because it's uncomfortable and/or there might be a little placebo effect going on :-). Play well! Quentin | TSG Instructor

    Hi there. I did a good full shoulder turn behind the ball without lifting my left heel because I'm very flexible but coming down, why my club hit onto the ground? Is it because I didn't shift my weight to the left during transition? How do I start my downswing as soon as I complete my full shoulder turn? Thank you very much, your video is great!

    I have had both hips replaced, within three weeks of one another and still of a fairly young age 55ish, therefore the ability to turn the hips as I use to is definitely diminished and thus distance particularly on the driver. With that said, after becoming frustrated with the diminished distance, one day on the range an epiphany occurred; that if I (I am a righted handed golfer) moved my right foot straight back a half to a full foot that my shoulder turn was then dramatically increased and I found some of my old distance back!! So like Quentin’s rear foot pointed out set-up, which I initially tried and yes it did help to some degree, the bringing of the rear foot straight back allows for even more shoulder turn. One does have to make sure they stay behind the ball, as this set-up is somewhat similar to a draw and therefore have to control such not becoming a hook; and as you emphasize finishing is a must. But for those who the foot turn out is still not sufficing the amount of shoulder turn, due to “significant” lack of hip mobility, my I suggest to the readers/subscribers; the bring the rear foot backward approach. Just a little FYI for anyone interested and with severely hip(s) restrictions.
    Best regards,

      Thanks! Yes, you want to get a full shoulder turn with all clubs that you're taking a full swing with. Some are more aggressive with the driver but if you struggle with distance across the board then do it with all clubs. Play well! Quentin | TSG Instructor

    Clay - I've been making only 45 degree turn with my shoulders and also struggle shifting my weight forward in my down swing. As a result I usually come over the top of the ball (out to in path) so even with good contact I get a slice (or with short irons a fade). Other times it's a chunk or skull. When I really focus on making a full turn (hips and shoulders) and get my hands high at the top of my swing, aside from the added power I also seem to make a much better weight shift and the ball flies straighter. So my question: does making full turn enable a better weight shift and also a proper inside path to the ball?

    • @TopSpeedGolf
      @TopSpeedGolf  4 года назад +1

      Hi Andy, it certainly can. If you have a really short turn then you can tend to rush the downswing which is what sounds like is going on here. When you rush the downswing, it can lead to over the top and poor contact. It seems very clear that you should work to ingrain a full shoulder turn. I would recommend working through the Power Turn course on the website. Here is the link to sign up for the membership: topspeedgolf.com/get-access-to-all-golf-courses/. Play well! One thing about the shoulder turn, those with arthritis in their neck may be able to make a 90 degree shoulder turn, but it will cause the head to rotate away from the ball to the point of losing sight of the ball. That is an issue that causes me to shorten my turn. By the time I’ve reacquired sight of the ball I am well into the downswing and subsequently mishit a lot of shots.

    Clay- I know this is an older video, but i am swinging about 75 or so, having a hard time adding much power at all, i get what i think is an okay shoulder turn, definitely not enough, but i wonder why my speed is so low. Im young and not too stiff so unsure. I can create a draw or fade when i want to and feel like my swing is decent, but just slow. Any tips?

    NECK rotation - that is the limiting factor. Most people can not rotate their necks over their shoulder blades to see the ball in a full backswing. That means the backswing is half what Clay can do. Not hips limiting them - NECK.

    The more I turn my shoulders...the straighter and farther the ball goes. The easiest way to turn the shoulders is to turn the hips...it almost feels like a baseball swing...where the club goes around your body, not up and down.
