Such an interesting haul! I never consider book hauls irresponsible (as long as I can afford them) even though I own more books than I can ever possibly read. Bringing them home is just such a joy. I don’t spend money on fancy shoes or bags or whatever most women buy to bring themselves happiness, I don’t go out to eat and can’t travel due to chronic illness, so books are my splurge.
I’m excited you’ll be reading Celestial Navigation, it’s one of my favorites. It’s the book that made me realize I wanted to be a novelist, and create characters as wonderfully quirky, and now writing is my career, so I’ll always be grateful. I hesitated to recommend it because Jeremy is autistic-coded, and I’m not sure how that depiction will hold up in 2024. (My kiddo is likely autistic, so I’m sensitive to this.) But at least in my memory I think it was handled carefully and lovingly, and I do want to read it again someday, so I’m looking forward to seeing what you think. (If you want to continue with Tyler, I’d also highly recommend The Accidental Tourist, which I also loved.) Happy reading, Greg!

Thanks for the helpful feedback on Celestial Navigation. And I also don't really spend money on anything other than books, so it does help me feel less guilty.

Thank you, Greg!🌷Book hauls are (almost😉) never irresponsible, just great fun, and I love watching these videos and… buying books😂I’ve read Thunderstruck by Elizabeth McCracken and, even though I’m not really a huge short-story reader, I enjoyed it so much that it inspired me to read more also by other authors. I’ve read the Lucy Barton books by Elizabeth Strout, and am now listening to Olive Kitteridge and loving it. I’m going to listen also to Olive Again, preparing for Tell Me Everything coming out in September. I think Kimberly Farr does a great job as narrator of these audio books.

I was thinking that audio might be a good way to go for Strout, so thank you. And thanks for the feedback on McCracken! I’ve heard a lot about her work from critics but not from other readers, so that’s good to know.

The Burrow sounds interesting, but as a bunny owner, I'm not sure I could read it if bad things happen to the bunny.

I hope you’ll add Evenings & Weekends to your immediate tbr. It’s an exquisite exploration of love, sexuality, gender, found family that I adored and I think you will too. I just finished it today and I can’t stop thinking about it. It’s one of those books you’ll want to hug tightly after you finish it. A highlight of my reading year :).

So much goodness here! And thank you for making my day with 47 minutes of delight! I totally agree about Sandwich and The Coast Road. I listened to both on audio and loved them!
I put Masquerade on my list immediately. It sounds fascinating and I love the surreal! I’ve been looking at that edition of Edmund White’s Nocturnes for quite a while on Blackwell’s, just entranced by the cover. I didn’t realize it was already out here. I’ll be ordering a copy at my local this weekend! I recently bought the pb of There, There as I never read it back when it came out and I wanted to read it before picking up Wandering Stars. I’m hoping to get to There, There before summer is over. I put Someone on my library TBR. And I’ve been going back and forth over Elif Shafak’s latest for a while. It sounds so intriguing, but it’s sooo long. Well, you managed to push me over the edge today and I ordered the UK edition, which has such a beautiful cover. I probably should have gone with audio, but I bit the bullet and went for the physical copy. I too still have to read 10 Minutes 38 Seconds and The Island of Misfit Trees (which I can’t help but call that book), but I do really like the sound of her new one.
Edit: I forgot Highway Thirteen! That is going on my list too!
You are such an influencer! 😉🤣💜

When you said at the beginning that you had a lot of books to talk about I looked at the time, 10 til 12, and thought no way, you’ll be up another hour! I laughed when I saw the YT blurb, I bought too many books. My problem is juggling books on Libby. I do buy some definitely independent bookstore books here, but they are in Spanish! I love all stories! And ones that have maps, etc.
Everyone must be reading Sandwich, I still have a 22 week wait!
Oh yeah, I meant to add that I really liked the Alison Cochrun book. Most readable!

All We Shall Know was my first Donal Ryan. I really liked it. The lack of quotation marks didn’t bother me. I picked it up in a little free library so I had no idea what it was about beforehand. Fortunately I am not bothered by thoughts of ending one’s life or pregnancy because this book’s main character contemplates what to do about her situation. I also enjoyed The Thing About December by Donal Ryan which has heavy trigger warnings too.

I have only watched the movie House of Sand and Fog and it was a tear jerker for sure. I have a copy of the book so I am sure at some point I would love to read it. Many excellent titles reviewed today. I have many of the Elizabeth Strout novels as when I see them at the library book sales or other inexpensive copies I snatched them right up. I had a bit of a irresponsible book haul month myself. Time to get reading!!! I did purchase a new bookcase with some retirement gift money so I will have fun rearranging my book collection soon!

I’m currently listening to the audio of The Coast Road. It’s set in Donegal in the run up to the referendum on divorce. The Catholic Church was very much against it. The population voted for for divorce and it was one of the first pillars to be toppled in the churches hold over the country. The vote on equal marriage and abortion followed.

Love this video! Most of these you got on sale, for free, or for a couple of bucks -- we need to celebrate the relief of the unbearable anxiety -- so, no guilt! I read Someone years ago when the author, Brian Doyle (Mink River, The Plover, Martin Marten,) recommended it to me. He said that Alice McDermott was the "voice" of New York -- that she "owned" it, which I found interesting. I'm so all over All We Shall Know -- grim opening and all! You got Celestial Navigation! I recommended it, and DATHR, to you and I'm super thrilled you're trying CN now. I've got The Coast Road and Amongst Women on their way to me, yay! Our book symbiosis is on point! Please tell me your anxiety has been vastly reduced? We dodged a gigantic, world-changing bullet, I think. 💚

Your first two books are Australian! And I haven't seen either of them in stores here yet. Highway 13 is only released here next week, I'll certainly be picking up a copy (our cover is really quite different- and much nicer I think). Any Australian will immediately think of Ivan Milat, I presume this book is based on his crimes.
