It really really sucks. I'm 17...a guy...and a large proportion of you viewers watching probably have an aptitude in maths or physics...sadly for me, I am not one of those people. I have always found mathematics and physics to be very difficult. I could memorise a whole list of equations and formulas and then during an exam I read the questions and I cannot understand them at all. Getting that all familiar head ache as it slowly burns and starts to hurt. Heading onwards to university soon hopefully. The applications of these two subjects in life have always been VERY interesting to me but it pains me to know that I know my limit. Even though I enjoy the subject and see how interesting it is. In particular, courses in the first year or two of university in the American/Canadian system consists of great halls with hundreds of students. It doesn't matter so much where you do that. Considering how expensive US schools can be, staying at home for a year and attending a less expensive State school is an option to consider. Especially when you consider many students change their interests when they get exposed to new topics ... or realize how tough their original area actually is. After a successful frosh year, you can go on to a 'better' school, and get the attention of experienced profs.
Taking both HL Math and Physics next year (IB System, not sure if you’re familiar with it) but this and the other video helped a lot for ideas on resources!!
I'm a foreigner where I study physics, I have no friends, I'm almost going to finish my undegraduate and it has been so difficult to do the things on my own, all by myself without anyone to be able to discuss problems and have others point of view. At the beggining it was so sad and was difficult to manage, but with the time somewhat I have been able to do it by watching a lot of video lectures so I have another way of approaching the problems other than my professors. I'm in a similar "predicament" as you. All throughout my econ undergrad I had my friends and classmates with me. But I've recently figured out that I've been depressed partly due to my major which I had very little interest in. I've just started my mathematics major this fall and I was psyched but I know no one and I just don't seem to click with the ppl in the program(which is quite small) and I don't see it happening in the future due to a number of good reasons. I thought that I'm sufficiently good at coping with things by myself but honestly working/studying with a friend or two would be so awesome and the time would feel less frustrating but the prospect of no friends is affecting me more than I thought. Can you elaborate more on how you managed in your undergrad program and what were some of the reasons which made it difficult to have friends?

I agree with you wholeheartedly about not having to go to a prestgious school, especially for undergraduate degree. At least here in the US it's not only crazy expensive, but truthfully there are VERY intelligent instructors at schools all across the country. No matter where you attend, you can learn a lot.

I’ve never been good at math when my teachers taught and forced me to do it out of a book. I’ve always loved space and astrophysics but saw it as “too hard” because I doubted myself. To understand General Relativity you need to have a good knowledge of math and physics at undergraduate level. I dont know how much you are into the fundamental things, like electromagnetism and classical mechanics but it's really important to have those concepts well stablished to grasp general relativity better. Also you need to be good at math, know calculus well at least.
Laupii1 in high school I completed pre and regular honors calc, in college now and have taken some maths so I have a solid foundation. As far as concepts and understanding I’ve done A TON of independent study because I’m genuinely interested. Takes a lot of backtracking when an unfamiliar concept comes up but I try not to let it stop me from learning
look for symmetries in your everyday life... keep your childhood memories alive... when you ride cycle first time u required a support from a person because u don't know how to deny gravity with rotation of wheel... some point u learned that... remember the joy... remember the 1st day when u controlled the cycle against gravity... Try to teach Yourself and get the joy of teaching yourself... U will fall 99 times out of hundred but the 1 success u might get could give u the joy of lifetime... take advise from ppl but don't get obsessed with their thought... your thought is unique and this uniqueness would surely put a carbon footprint in your field... Before arguing with others brk your own argument again and again and one day u will find and unbreakable argument is pushing your head just like a bottle fly larva... I'm a law student from Saudi Arabia, math and physics are my least favorite subjects and yet I just can't stop watching your videos :) .... you give me strength, determination and the sense that anything is achievable if we work hard enough. you also teach me to be passionate and love what I'm studying and how to organize my time. Understanding mathematics is vital thus please read Morris Kline’s books , mathematics and the physical world , calculus an intuitive and a physical approach, Mathematics and the loss of certainty, why Jonny can’t add. You and Jonny will then enjoy maths and physics and know what’s it all about.
Just quick comment...since Feynman's "Lectures on Physics" are actually transcribed from lectures, I find them easier to follow by actually listening to them (Six Easy Pieces). On RUclips there are also his lectures on the Character of Physical Law. Also a book, but easier to follow by watching lectures (and after that, I find reading the book easier, actually).

I've always loved physics and wanted to study it, but I just realised I don't have enough capacity to go forward with it. Like, even in high school, I don't understand anything in physics. I easily get 95+ on every physics test, but that's only because I know formulas by heart and know where to apply them. I don't actually _understand_ what those formulas are or how to logically get them.When we did derivatives for the first time at school, I realised I've spent three of my four years in high school (I'm in my last year now) without knowing that kinematic equations are derived from each other. I just blindly memorise formulas without knowing what they actually are, and that probably means I won't get anywhere in physics. Sorry if this post seems too rambling or has errors, English isn't my first language.
i’m currently in grade 11, taking AP physics. even my exams are AP styled, which makes this subject REALLY difficult to deal with. i’m not sure if i actually love physics as i once thought after seeing all of this difficulty, and whether i should major in it once i’m in uni. any advice?
m // if you enjoy it, do it anyway. The subject matter, the way of thinking, all of that is what is most important. Those early classes are meant to wash people out, once you get through the grunt work of training you to think like a scientist, the upper level courses, for most math and science fields, allow more expression. You get into the greatest subject matter once you get deeper into the field, and those introductory courses are far from the real product. This is especially true for chemistry. I absolutely hated General chemistry classes that I took in high school and first year college. Fast forward two years and finally there’s a light at the end of the tunnel when you’re ready to roam free (almost) and that’s the beauty of research.

i have to go and check out deriving the golden ratio. i could not quite remember though it started by dividing a straight measure into two unequal lengths and then calculating the ratio of one part to the total length.
I am literally weak at maths. I am 15 yo. I am in Asia so the teachers and others (including my dad) bullies me for being bad at math. It really hurts when you are discriminated in schools by teachers. Whenever my math teacher humiliate me I get depressed and cry at home :( I had joined a tuition but it didn't work. The teacher wasn't good choice for me.
Working with other people doesn’t really help me. It always seems like way other people learn things is completely different from the way I learn things.

Yes! There is a lecture on my university with curriculum inspired by this book. With all these experiments it doesn't even feel like lecture but more like physics theatre.
I did the going after the popular supervisor method. Turns out, his lab is really toxic, and I lost almost all interest and energy in my field. Instead I would replace it with going after supervisors that really resonates with your field, ideology (regarding your field), etc.

You could try to look at the parts you already somewhat understand and turn the models you have in your head when you think about those things into something beautiful. Not focusing on a specific problem, but simply learning how to create a beautiful representation of the knowledge in your head. It makes you more comfortable with using the knowledge and makes adding new, related bits of knowledge more fun because it just adds to the beauty of what you have already created in your mind.

I've always loved physics and wanted to study it, but I just realised I don't have enough capacity to go forward with it. Like, even in high school, I don't understand anything in physics. I easily get 95+ on every physics test, but that's only because I know formulas by heart and know where to apply them. I don't actually _understand_ what those formulas are or how to logically get them.When we did derivatives for the first time at school, I realised I've spent three of my four years in high school (I'm in my last year now) without knowing that kinematic equations are derived from each other. I just blindly memorise formulas without knowing what they actually are, and that probably means I won't get anywhere in physics. Sorry if this post seems too rambling or has errors, English isn't my first language.
i’m currently in grade 11, taking AP physics. even my exams are AP styled, which makes this subject REALLY difficult to deal with. i’m not sure if i actually love physics as i once thought after seeing all of this difficulty, and whether i should major in it once i’m in uni. any advice?
m // if you enjoy it, do it anyway. The subject matter, the way of thinking, all of that is what is most important. Those early classes are meant to wash people out, once you get through the grunt work of training you to think like a scientist, the upper level courses, for most math and science fields, allow more expression. You get into the greatest subject matter once you get deeper into the field, and those introductory courses are far from the real product. This is especially true for chemistry. I absolutely hated General chemistry classes that I took in high school and first year college. Fast forward two years and finally there’s a light at the end of the tunnel when you’re ready to roam free (almost) and that’s the beauty of research.
Tibbee is absolutely awesome if only the world 🌍 was full of such teachers, we could all be genius Einstein's . This generation can do amazing things, go get em 🐅.

Do you have any advice on how to stay positive throughout your studies? I tend to get discouraged when i don't excel or when others seem to be doing better than me (I'm a perfectionist). So how do you stay positive and focused during moments like this?
How do you make sure to fully learn the material when taking so many difficult classes at once and having so little time?
Any extra advice on things you can do to ensure getting straight A's ?
Lastly, how do you keep yourself from getting distracted by your social life?

Find smart friends in your classes, I found mine in the front row at lectures. They will help you get good grades and feel supported

i have to go and check out deriving the golden ratio. i could not quite remember though it started by dividing a straight measure into two unequal lengths and then calculating the ratio of one part to the total length.
I am literally weak at maths. I am 15 yo. I am in Asia so the teachers and others (including my dad) bullies me for being bad at math. It really hurts when you are discriminated in schools by teachers.
Whenever my math teacher humiliate me I get depressed and cry at home :(
I had joined a tuition but it didn't work. The teacher wasn't good choice for me.

Hi, dear Toby! You touched a very important subject - staying into science. I guess we straggle with such thoughts sometimes due to really hard process of studying but primarily cause we want to apply our knowledge by creating something tangible and not only abstract. In a comment down below you say you wish to study more ai and as you mention before you're really into CS studies. So how to decide between smth more practical and fundamental? Though I know that you can't have the 1st one without the 2nd and our degree isn't a limit. But anyway how do you decide for yourself andcan you pls give your advise on that?

The "Flying Circus of Physics" is a great book, full of challenging problems in "basic physics" (I guess I'd say). I had to look up some of the answers at the back of book, I gave up (this was in high school), but it was fun read nonetheless. By Jearl Walker.
Yes! There is a lecture on my university with curriculum inspired by this book. With all these experiments it doesn't even feel like lecture but more like physics theatre.

I did the going after the popular supervisor method. Turns out, his lab is really toxic, and I lost almost all interest and energy in my field. Instead I would replace it with going after supervisors that really resonates with your field, ideology (regarding your field), etc.

I just can’t seem to get over my physics phobia. :(
You could try to look at the parts you already somewhat understand and turn the models you have in your head when you think about those things into something beautiful. Not focusing on a specific problem, but simply learning how to create a beautiful representation of the knowledge in your head.
It makes you more comfortable with using the knowledge and makes adding new, related bits of knowledge more fun because it just adds to the beauty of what you have already created in your mind.
