it`s not fake it`s scripted there is a difference you can`t fake lifting something you can`t fake physics all you can do is act like there was more impact than there was .
I could seriously see these things happening exactly as Dr. D says they happened. I guarantee that Vince McMahon hated John Stossel and wanted someone to shut him up. The guy was trying to tear down Vinces wrestling company, his wrestlers, and even calling the fans out as violent idiots, so there's no way that Vince was ok with that. It's just like the media to think that it's their job to tell people what to be entertained by and go so far as to treat us like we are idiots and need them to do their idea of the right thing.
THE HANNIBAL TV I remember those interviews as well. One was about a guy who tried to get into wrestling, the late Big Jim Wilson, and he too was someone who tried to exploit the business, when he didn't get his way. Truth be told, Wilson was a lousy wrestler, he moved awkwardly, and had no in-ring appeal. He goes back to the 70s in a defunct promotion call the IWA, which did have big stars, but it was a failed rival to the old Paul Jones Atlanta territorial "Georgia Championship Wrestling" business I have an old event program from those days. And Schultz threw water in Wilson's face for it.💦 If you like to see Wilson and that territory, on YT is an upload called "Jim Wilson vs Eric The Red." and you'll see what I meant about Wilson.
I think he was on three episodes. One was the wrestling episode, another one was about bounty hunting and another was about the guests he (Downey) had that generated the most viewer mail. In the last one Dr. D called some woman who edited a porn mag an asshole among other things after she got lippy with him.
Real tough guy? He slapped a reporter doing his job? This guy is a 100% bitch. Did you forget when the cops showed up? What did he do? Nothing. Faced with real power he bows to it. Taking nothing away from his actions inside the ring.
Every body remember how after Schultz slapped Stossel there was a huge spike in the number of people who believed professional wrestling was a legit athletic competition? Yeah, me neither.
At the age of 10 I was watching wrestling and I could tell that something wasn't on the up and up. Didn't mean I stopped watching but I knew. I'm not special. Everybody knew. The public has known since at least the 1930s. And maybe "fake" is the wrong word, but we're stuck with it
As a former Police Officer disabled, a key indicator of dishonesty when questioning a possible suspect is. Changes to their story it's a psychological reaction too their dishonesty. Over time by asking them to repeat the story or clarify a point. A person will assume your asking them to repeat story because their not convincing you. They then tend to over compensate by adding / changing the story. In their mind they feel by expanding or adding to story their increasing believability. Dr. D, Has not changed one detail, go back 25 yrs. He actually uses the same words in interview after interview. No variations, or new details added. ☆☆☆☆☆ Cruzer In CT
Bad liars and good liars. All fictional writers, lie and always keep their story identical. JR tolken could recite Lord Of the Rings verbatim and never change it. Its still all lies.
This was the last Garden house show before Wrestlemania. What really added to the tension that night was the fact that Mr. T decided to pull one of his diva acts that threatened to derail 'Mania. Vince didn't want anyone to see T. cutting up and sent Schultz outside to make sure that Stossel didn't see any of it. Schultz, already pissed off at what was going on went outside and when Stossel asked his stupid question Schultz wound up ringing his bell.
1 key detail is that Vince said to him “stay in character.” That’s not something he’s clever enough to make up and definitely something Vince would say. So I believe Dr D.
Thanks for clipping the long shoots. One of the best things ever in wrestling.. seeing that nunce Stossel get slapped. Dr D was awesome.. "you aint never been with a woman boi" Haha.. Thanks Dev
Schultz is completely lying, he turned from a favorite wrestler into a worse favored wrestler instantly when he did that,...no interviewer should take a such a powerful slap like that 1 after the other?! Amazing how he tries to dress it up what he did as if it wasn't a bad thing, w./out regretting it...
I saw a match with Dr. D. Afterwards a fan went up to Dr. D and said, "alright, way to go Dr.D" and Dr. D. said, 'SHUT UP!!!!!' Right then I was a fan !!
wrestling is staged is what i like to say but the moves they do can hurt alot and the wear and tear on the body is crazy! i injured my back barbell squatting and these guys do much more than that
Stossel was simply embarrassed. He could/should have defended himself like a man. I'm sure Schultz could handle himself, but NO WAY you slap me anywhere...let alone on camera...and we don't have a reckoning of some sort.
I believe Dr. D 100%! I remember watching that slapping incident live on tv, on that tv show 20/20. I was in high school then. And, just I remember watching that then, it is still memorable, now...and STILL FUNNY AS HELL! I did believe, though, that Stossel was really hurt and watching Mr. Fuji with that "shit eating grin" on his face watching it go down!
Never trust vince or linda...great job dr. D, reporter got what he needed!! Need more wrestlers like you today way too many pansy wrestlers now. Very hard to watch anymore!
So many teenage boys re-enacted the Stossel interview the following year. Nothing funnier at that age than watching one friend bitch slap another while he yelled “you think that’s fake!”

Lot of good that did. Nobody thinks professional wrestling is real. Not now, not then, not in the 1930s when newspapers published match results before they happened, probably not ever.
I knew from a young age that they worked from a script but I met lots of fans who would literally fight another fan over saying that a match looked fake
You know, I've heard a million people hypothesizing that the Montreal Screwjob was a work for 24 years, but never once have I heard one single solitary person ever suggest that Schultz slapping Stossel was a work...
During the kayfabe days, doing exposes on wrestling by newspapers or TV news was the most tired, cliched idea for generating readers or viewers. Except maybe for innocent kids who would be disturbed by such news (and why do that??), most fans knew it was just entertainment. What real sport had 50 percent rotten, anti-social villains on their rosters? To expose wrestling was what you did when you were out of ideas for real investigative journalism. Next up: those mind readers are fakes!
I know I’m late to the party. Hope someone has some insight for me into Dr. D getting away with battery on a reporter. So many comments here say Dr. D was protecting wrestling when he hit John Stossel. So many comments say they were glad he did it. This interview and other sources are all negative toward Stossel. Stossel himself later said he regretted suing Schultz. Please explain how battery on a reporter is good and why Schultz wasn’t prosecuted. On the contrary, he is still fiercely defended and widely praised. Dr. D certainly wasn’t protecting the reputation that wrestling was real matchups with no set outcome. It’s common knowledge wrestling is scripted, choreographed. Whatever you call it, it’s fake. It doesn’t matter if the wrestlers get real injuries. Irrelevant that wrestlers are athletic and strong, that they’re real athletes. Open hand or not, hitting the ear or jaw - doesn’t matter. Nor does it matter that Stossel went down easy, proving Dr. D’s prowess and strength. None of these defenses (excuses) matter at all! Stossel was doing his job. Dr. D knocked him to the ground twice. That’s called battery in America. You go to jail for that. But Schultz didn’t. I can’t find a single suggestion that he should have! Schultz getting fired and Vince being an ass is a different conversation. I’m asking about rule of law. Dr. D hit a man so hard he knocked him to the ground. When the man got up, he hit him again. He was never arrested or prosecuted. Who can explain this?
SusanBailey AmazingEstate , back then the New York State Athletic Commission was charged with regulating professional wrestling in Madison Square Garden. Like most NYC business, there were lots of backdoor dealings and greased palms in order for the WWF to be the sole promotion that hold exhibitions at the Garden. Vince McMahon was trying to move professional wrestling into the mainstream, and was banking the whole family fortune on the upcoming Wrestlemania show that would air nationally on closed circuit TV. The 20/20 Report was part of the hype in the run-up to Wrestlemania. McMahon isn't talking and I don't how much of what Schultz says that I can actually believe, so we may never know what McMahon actually said to Schultz that night, but the end result was McMahon was facing a tidal wave of negative attention at the worst possible time. Depending on what clip you see of the incident, you can hear someone (maybe McMahon) yelling what sounds like "WHAT'S WRONG WITH YOU?" at the very end. We know McMahon had to pay off Stossel, but he probably had to pay off a whole lot of other people in order to make criminal charges go away. He went after Schultz in order to get his money back. No promoter would work with Schultz after that. They couldn't afford to. As for why certain wrestling fans keep praising Schultz all these years later, "protecting the business" is code for "As wrestling fans we're tired of being told wrestling is fake our entire lives, and this is what we'd like to do to people who tell us it's fake." They neglect to mention this 20/20 report made Stossel's career, and it cost Schultz at least 425 grand and probably a lot more to commit career suicide on national TV. And for what? Nobody thinks professional wrestling is a legitimate athletic competition. Not now. Not even then. Even Schultz himself broke kayfabe all of three years after Vince McMahon admitted it was all a work. I hope you like that answer, because none of these people who think Schultz is some kind of hero is going to reply.

it`s not fake it`s scripted there is a difference you can`t fake lifting something you can`t fake physics all you can do is act like there was more impact than there was .
VKM covered his ass and didn’t do right by Schultz. Vince is a user
so are most promoters
I could seriously see these things happening exactly as Dr. D says they happened. I guarantee that Vince McMahon hated John Stossel and wanted someone to shut him up. The guy was trying to tear down Vinces wrestling company, his wrestlers, and even calling the fans out as violent idiots, so there's no way that Vince was ok with that. It's just like the media to think that it's their job to tell people what to be entertained by and go so far as to treat us like we are idiots and need them to do their idea of the right thing.
Loved the episode when Dr. D was on the Morton Downey Jr Show
Classic
He was actually on 2 episodes and he talks about them in this interview.
He goes back to the 70s in a defunct promotion call the IWA, which did have big stars, but it was a failed rival to the old Paul Jones Atlanta territorial "Georgia Championship Wrestling" business
I have an old event program from those days.
And Schultz threw water in Wilson's face for it.💦
If you like to see Wilson and that territory, on YT is an upload called "Jim Wilson vs Eric The Red."
and you'll see what I meant about Wilson.
I think he was on three episodes. One was the wrestling episode, another one was about bounty hunting and another was about the guests he (Downey) had that generated the most viewer mail. In the last one Dr. D called some woman who edited a porn mag an asshole among other things after she got lippy with him.
Schultz talked out of his ass that whole show. Until he was asked about why Vegas didn't take action on wrestling, and he kept his big fat mouth shut.
Well, everything Jim Wilson said turned out to be true, and Schultz turned out to be a big fat liar who committed career suicide on national TV.
This man is straight up you just have to watch what you say around him
One of the all time greats. One of my favorites in the ring and outside the ring. Real tough guy. Great interview.
salvatore pavone We need more DR D's and Bob Holly's instead of Sami Zayne and Seth Rollins
Real tough guy? He slapped a reporter doing his job? This guy is a 100% bitch. Did you forget when the cops showed up? What did he do? Nothing. Faced with real power he bows to it. Taking nothing away from his actions inside the ring.
@@zachcouch1987 are you dumb? you want him to fight the cops? lol and lets not act like that reporter didnt deserve it hypothetically
Every body remember how after Schultz slapped Stossel there was a huge spike in the number of people who believed professional wrestling was a legit athletic competition?
Yeah, me neither.
Well the big boom period of wrestling in the 80's was around that time so it didn't hurt wrestling's popularity.
At the age of 10 I was watching wrestling and I could tell that something wasn't on the up and up. Didn't mean I stopped watching but I knew. I'm not special. Everybody knew. The public has known since at least the 1930s. And maybe "fake" is the wrong word, but we're stuck with it
@Superior What's not cool is to keep going on about how Schultz "protected the business". Did slapping Stossel convince anyone wrestling is real? No.
As a former Police Officer disabled, a
key indicator of dishonesty when questioning a possible suspect is.
Changes to their story
it's a psychological reaction too their dishonesty.
Over time by asking them to repeat the story or clarify a point. A person will assume your asking them to repeat story because
their not convincing you.
They then tend to over compensate by adding / changing the story.
In their mind they feel by expanding or adding to story their increasing believability.
Dr. D,
Has not changed one detail, go back 25 yrs.
He actually uses the same words in interview after interview.
No variations, or new details added.

Bad liars and good liars.
All fictional writers, lie and always keep their story identical. JR tolken could recite Lord Of the Rings verbatim and never change it. Its still all lies.
Dr. D is a nice guy.
He has always told the truth.
I knew I should not played this video, it slapped the shit out of me
This was the last Garden house show before Wrestlemania.
What was Mr. T doing, exactly? I've searched and can't find any information.
Embarrassing people on tv knowing the shit was fake. Turned around and bit him in the ass.
Stay in character and go out there and tell this guy wrestling isn't fake
I thought David Schultz was dead but got him mixed up with Dave Schultz.
I love how he does two hand claps as if he was re-living that night 😄
1 key detail is that Vince said to him “stay in character.” That’s not something he’s clever enough to make up and definitely something Vince would say. So I believe Dr D.
Dr. D is bad ass he’s got to be the coolest guy in wrestling ever he’s real
I saw it when it happened. He slapped the sh!t out of Stossel.
In his biography, Stossel wrote that he regretted suing David.
A sad old man who's highlight in life is slapping a little guy because another grown man told him to ... Pathetic
Violence is never the answer. Violence proves nothing. Except this one time...
Thanks for clipping the long shoots.
One of the best things ever in wrestling.. seeing that nunce Stossel get slapped.
Dr D was awesome.. "you aint never been with a woman boi" Haha..
Thanks Dev
He slapped him so hard john still can't grow hair on his face
Does he have a mustache? Is it a fake?
@@ericb8217 yes... it's fake.
I want to take Dr D fishing and listen to his stories.
Hogtied and a gun held to his head?? Unreal! Yeah, Vince took real care of him!
Schultz is completely lying, he turned from a favorite wrestler into a worse favored wrestler instantly when he did that,...no interviewer should take a such a powerful slap like that 1 after the other?! Amazing how he tries to dress it up what he did as if it wasn't a bad thing, w./out regretting it...
man, I like how you get to the bottom of all these stories
I saw a match with Dr. D. Afterwards a fan went up to Dr. D and said, "alright, way to go Dr.D" and Dr. D. said, 'SHUT UP!!!!!' Right then I was a fan !!
Dr. D should get restitution for protecting the business in the Golden Era of pro wrestling.
"Protecting the business"? People have known pro wrestling was predetermined since at least the 1930s.
HAHAHA SO Schultz was defending himself after Stossel got up!
wrestling is staged is what i like to say but the moves they do can hurt alot and the wear and tear on the body is crazy! i injured my back barbell squatting and these guys do much more than that
Stossel was simply embarrassed.
I remember seeing this live, and Dr.D became my hero.
great interview
Mr. Fuji was laughing at it happening maybe not an audible laugh but I could swear he was at least smiling in the video
Richard Belzer got $400,000 from suing the WWF, but he was seriously injured.
Stossel got $280,000 and wasn't even hurt.
isn't it just wonderful how we are all just used as pawns.
Dr D is the man best heel ever

I have met many Pro Wrestlers... all of them said Dr. D is a no bullshit badass.
I WANTED A WOMAN, I COULDN'T FIND NO WOMAN 🤣🤣🤣
I remember that on 20/20. That was stossel taking a bump which was the price to pay for stardom. After that Stossels career took off.
Lol, Dr. D put him over
@@jayprimo Yep but Stossel wouldn't admit it.
People who get riled up about wrestling being fake are the people who thought it _was real_ at some point probably.
*John:* I’ll ask you the standard question. You know, I think this is fake.
*Dr. D:* 😠You think it’s fake? 👋 What’s that? Is that fake? What the hell’s wrong with you that’s open hand slap. You think it’s fake? 👋
*John:* Easy, easy! 🏃
*Dr. D:* What do you mean?
I love it when one of the boys sticks up for the business. You definitely don't see that today.
Hogan says the first Mania main event was Dr. D’s idea. It was supposed to be him not Orndorff in the match.
so laying hands on a person because you disagree with them is ok? feeble minds
MIND READERS ARE STILL REAL TO ME DAMMIT!
Seems more mellow as he's gotten older. Loved Dr. D great wrestler.
This guy should have a big heel run in wwf.. had a great look and great promo total package
I can imagine Stone Cold slapping someone if they say it’s fake back in the late 90’s
John Stossel never had a wohman
That's why they just paid the fee of $425,000, because they ordered it.
Open handshake, best comment woulda bin, "PROVEN fake, media's sho nuff FAKE! So, SHAKE ohn it bro Stosser!!"
SusanBailey AmazingEstate
, back then the New York State Athletic Commission was charged with regulating professional wrestling in Madison Square Garden.
Vince probably wanted to fire him but need to figure out a way to do it and this was it
Gene Akerlund said that he thought David Schultz was on drugs or on steroids when this happened
