Hi, I am the son of two artists and began painting in my hometown of Richmond, Virginia before I could walk. I was a rare combination of artist and athlete so I moved to Los Angeles in 2008 to play football for USC. I left the team my sophomore year to focus on painting and filmmaking, applying the same focus and discipline from my football career to my art. I primarily work in oils, and spend most free days painting "en plein air" in my new home of Sarasota Florida.

This is the only video i have found on RUclips that actually made me understand the use of mediums and solvents.
YES!
Totally agree. I was searching for this
Same here :)
Same!!
Same.
I was trying to find a video explaining mediums simply, and everyone was going on and on about 10000 of mediums... like we’re not all professionals...xD
But your video was easy to understand ^_^
I've painted for years but always been intimidated by oils specifically. Your videos have been great for demystifying the process and setting me up to learn, thank you!
Oh man this is very clear, you deliver the information very clearly! thanks bud
You got it!
@@paintcoach Great Video! Thank You!! I am going to finally try Oil painting!

I am coming back to painting with oils after a long time, so your video helped remind me of the basics re linseed oil. Great, thanks.
Thank you for making this video! Your explanations were concise and made sense!
Always excellent tuition: simple and clear. Thanks!!!!🎉
Great video! Thanks for taking the time to explain so in-depth. You might want to add the safety info about both products as well. That Linseed Oil has been known to combust so you really need to be careful. The paint thinner needs to be covered if you are going to use it while painting so as not to breathe it. Ventilation is a must!
Cheers this was really helpful and cannot wait to start.
Thank you for the tips!!!!!! Got into painting again since childhood.

You're a cool chill dude. Nice video.
Really helpful bro
You have indeed simplified. I’m almost 50. Been using graphite n watercolour. Alway wanted to use oil but to scared😂. Recently mi Lidl ole cat died to gonna dedicate mi first oil painting to her. Thanks for making this vid, feeling way more relaxed about having a go now 😇🙏🙌✊✌️🖖✨😃
Very informative. I've been using walnut medium for wet on wet oil paintings like Bob Ross would use liquid clear. They both work the same.
Thank you so much for this. You explained it perfectly, I like listening to U and love learning lol I'm new to oil paints...Abstract art seems to call to me more than anything else. Acrylics dry too fast for me and I can't wait to try the oil paints.😁 Slow drying time is exciting to work with. I definitely want more working time. Thank you! ♡
thanks man. you are a saviour :)
Very nice and useful
I liked and subscribed your video. Because you are providing informations that we want. 👍

Thank you so much
Just discovered your channel a few days ago and I decided its time to try oils! A while ago I just received my oil paints and excited to explore them since I've been a watercolor/gouache hobbyist! 🙂
Thanks, Paint Brah.
Thank you!!!!
thank you
Great video. Haven't touched oil in 15 years and I completely forgot what linseed oil was for.
I have a bottle in a kit and now i can use it!!
Thank you.
Thank you very much. What is the first step to start on a canvass? Do I need to apply something on the canvass first?
Also can I paint over a water colour painting with oil or acrylics - asking whether I could recycle the canvass? Thx
Very helpful video. I'm only starting out and wondering for toning the canvas or sheet, would you use the paint thinner with your paint, so as not to waste it? And then cover the whole canvas with this light layer? Thank you
Really enjoyed listening to your video. I was wondering about using linseed oil over top of a painting? I've read/heard that it adds more vibrancy to the colors, would this work with oil pastels as a final coating? I like working with oil pastels and the current piece I'm working on, the colors are really dull looking.
thank you.
Hello Paint Coach
Thank you for sharing the guidance and skill in other videos. I'm one of your fanclub.
I've a question related to his to make a medium.
In what proportion the lingered oil and white spirit are added together to make a medium to increase the flow of the paint and to follow the rule of thick over thin. Anything else is added to make the medium like varnish or Winsor Newton gel?
I definitely want to slow down the drying time.
Awaiting the reply!
Thank you!
Does the paint thinner have fumes? I’m so confused about what is safe to use indoors. Being in a cold climate I can’t have windows open for most of the year. Thank you for your videos!
Thank you for this! So do we have to add more linseed oil for every layer to keep with fat over lean? Or does that not apply?
I have a question. I tint my canvas by using and odorless turpentine as a medium. Then when that’s dry, I then use liquin original for my blocking in . Then when that is dry , I typically just work straight with the paint and lend seed oil for the remainder of the painting. Are there any problems with this system I should know about ? Please and thank you.
This video was very helpful to me as when to use the medium and paint thinner. Can you explain how some oil paintings have a matt finish and others have a shiny finish? Also, why do some paintings have varnish over the oil painting surface?
Hi, can i ask you a question? I bought the Louis Velasquez’s book named: Rembrandt’s Superior oil and how to make it”; which explain how to refine and thicken linseed oil. The book shows a method of thickening while you put oil before into the freezer and after into the refrigerator; do you think it is a good method? Thanks.
i work in a small area, what paint thinner is not too overwhelming for odor. Can clove oil also be used as a thinner? Thank You
Yes thanks, can u make a video explaining direct painting, I know this video relates to that. Seems hard to find someone that can explain direct painting in a detailed and clear way. Indirect painting Is easier to find.
