  • In this video I demonstrate how to use oil painting medium. A lot of beginner oil painters struggle with how to use medium. How much do you use? When do you use it? Where do you use it? I answer all these questions in this video.

    Hi, I am the son of two artists and began painting in my hometown of Richmond, Virginia before I could walk. I was a rare combination of artist and athlete so I moved to Los Angeles in 2008 to play football for USC. I left the team my sophomore year to focus on painting and filmmaking, applying the same focus and discipline from my football career to my art. I primarily work in oils, and spend most free days painting "en plein air" around Los Angeles.

    I just started to oil paint, and was so confused as to how to mix in my mediums; most videos just talk about it, but doesn't show it whether to mix the medium directly into the colors or mix it into the colors. This was very helpful, thank you :)

    I can’t believe that at least one of the 20 to 30 artists I have worked with over the last 15 years didn’t explain what I have just seen here.
    All I got was the mantra “fat over lean, thick over thin” with no instruction about how to use solvents and mediums.
    Thank You so much for this revelation.

      I agree. The classes I have attended taught all sorts of stuff. But did not explain/demonstrate/teach how to use thinbers or mediums.
      This has been the best so far.
      Thank you. It now makes a lot more sense.😊

      In my first ever intro to oil painting class my painting instructor told us “you just add more oil when you need it.” Which left me scratching my head as to know whether or not or when I even needed it if at all or just use it all the time with all the paints...so her advice was less than helpful! She was a really good artist, but not a very good teacher. I think many teachers out there have been doing their stuff for so long, they just think everyone around them knows most of what they know as well. It’s important to remember when teaching that not everyone knows what you know or knows anything at all about the topic which is why they’re there....to learn more about it.

    • @imperror3475
      @imperror3475 3 года назад

      @@Lacroix999 That is an interesting thought but I'm not sure if the teachers can approach it differently other way than asking. Because the professionals in nearly anything don't actually realize what is basic knowledge and what they need to explain, it is usually on the same level so they basically can either explain everything or nothing.

    I am a self taught artist, I have been practicing my craft for over 20 years, I would say your training is vast and I appreciate the information. I was wondering how you get your pallet so clean? I have used linseed oil and even olive oils for years but I definitely need to start using different mediums. Thank you I will definitely subscribe 🥰🥰

    I use lineseed oil for the first drawing because it allows me to move things around and rework it.

    I bought an oil paint set a few years ago, with canvas boards, palette knives, brushes, linseed oil, with artist turpintine. But it just sat there doing nothing. Do not laugh but I was terrified of using oil paints, worried bout the drying time and how and when to use paint mixtures and thinners for the paints. It just plain intimidated me. So where do I start? Happy new year.

    Great to hear you like oils because they dry slowly! Exactly why I love them. If drying is taking too long perhaps start another canvas? I would love to know your view on working a few canvases at a time, Chris?
    BTW. My near vision is challenged, so I must be a natural: I don't even have to squint. : )
