That one man could write songs as diverse as "Lady Is a Tramp" to "If I Loved You'" to "Edelweiss"et al, and sustain this level of genius over several decades is simply miraculous. The depth, breadth, and longevity of Rodgers' gifts to popular music is unequaled. The great Carole King said that she was influenced as a composer by Rodgers and Hart and Rodgers and Hammerstein. Lennon and McCartney aspired to be the modern day Rodgers and Hammerstein. And in 2021, Forbes magazine valued the Rodgers and Hammerstein songbook as the third most valuable of all-time right behind Lennon and McCartney and Michael Jackson's canon of songs. Talk about staying power!
Richard Rodgers through his association with Oscar Hammerstein created what we know as the Broadway Musical. Such an amazing talent. So glad we had him while we did.
The three singers were rushed by time constraints, but focus on the galaxy of astounding songs from one man. These three performers nailed it. Rodgers is second to Berlin on the creation of timeless popular music. What a gift to all of us.
Eh? People seem to often overlook Williams. Oh well. It's the one thing I wonder about the Honors. Would it be alright to honor dead people? Hank Williams, Louis Armstrong, Bing Crosby and Ethel Waters. Those would be the 1st four I'd honor
I'm a huge Richard Rodgers fan. He is still being admired and enjoyed the world over, every time one of his songs or musicals is performed, every time a jazz musician plays their version of a Rodger's tune. I play a number of his tunes and get such joy doing so, even if I'm just a dedicated amateur pianist who plays by ear and then improvises on the tune. Tony Bennett is in great form here. Rodgers found great lyricists in Lorenz Hart and Oscar Hammerstein.
Florence Henderson had a great voice. I would have lived to see Shirley Jones as well. She was the first and only singer to be under contract to Richard Rogers and Oscar Hammerstein. Tony Bennett awesome.
Very few people realize that both Florence Henderson and Shirley Jones followed Mary Martin in playing Maria in Sound of Music. Henderson also played the lead in a Broadway revival of Oklahoma. That album is available on iTunes.
Many great singers played Maria on stage after Mary Martin.Florence was as the same time than Mary in touring performances. Also played the role Julie Andrews in the movie Shirley Jones Barbara Cook Jane Powell Carol Lawrence Sally Ann Howes Rebecca Luker Laura Benanti and other great singers.
Florence played Laurie in Oklahoma in the 1953 54 revival with Barbara Cook as Ado Annie and both John Raitt and Celeste Holm sang in the 1955 Ed Sullivan Oklahoma program Florence also played Nellie in the sixties Lincoln Center revival with Giorgio Tozzi as Emile.
Henderson played Laurie in. the 1953 Broadway revival with Raid Bond Barbara Cook and other artists not with John Raitt. They only made a Studio recording in the sixties with Philis Newman as Annie because Barbara Cook recorded Show Boat with Raitt and The King and I with Theodore Bikel at the same time.Shirley Jones played Maria later and was Rodgers favourite as Maria in the film before Julie Andrews was cast.Only Henderson played Maria in.touring performances when Mary Martin was Maria on Broadway.
Oh yes! She was in a few musicals, either on Broadway or on tour. It’s funny that she and Shirley Jones both played iconic TV moms in the 70’s but had begun their careers in musical theatre. They both had beautiful soprano voices.
If you can find it, there was a Brady Bunch episode where she sang a solo. I think it's the one where she and Cindy both had tonsillitis (but it's been decades since I saw it).
Kids today wold be lost with this classic music ! IT WOULD BE NICE IF NEW ARTISTS HAD TO LEARN THIS STYLE OF SINGING "REAL" INSTEAD OF THE PITCH CORRECTION AND AUTO TUNE CRAP TODAY ! THIS VIDEO CONSISTS OF REAL SINGERS !
Richard Rodgers, Arthur Rubenstein, Marian Anderson, George Balanchine and Fred Astaire in the same group. Who do we get today? Lin-Manuel Miranda, LL Cool J, Gloria Estefan, Lionel Ritchie, Steve Martin? Jesus. Talk about slumming it.
Macho voce, I wholeheartedly agree with you. Although I like some of the current artists you mention, they pale in comparison with the genius, impact, and timelessness of the accomplishments of Rodgers, Rubinstein, Anderson, Balanchine, and Astaire.
I agree with you.Now they give the award to inferior singers actors dancers etc and didnt give to great artists like Roberta Peters Carol Channing Maureen O Hara and others.
Yes and when they performed on the Broadway stage they didn't shave a mic sticking on their face. They learned to project their voice and to sing to the balcony! Changed days
Richard Charles Rodgers (June 28, 1902 - December 30, 1979) was an American composer who worked primarily in musical theater. With 43 Broadway musicals and over 900 songs to his credit, Rodgers was one of the most well-known American composers of the 20th century, and his compositions had a significant influence on popular music. Rodgers died in 1979, aged 77, after surviving cancer of the jaw, a heart attack, and a laryngectomy.
There was a wonderful clip of the very first Honorees which included the great Fred Astaire, but I haven't seen it for years. Too bad it is not available.
Rodgers was in the first class. The lady to his right (our left as we watched) was Marian Anderson. The other 2 were Balanchine and Rubinstein. Thanks to Wikipedia 4 t/ info.
It seemed that Mrs. Shirley Partridge, star of Oklahoma and Carousel, was nowhere to be found thus clearing the way for Mrs. Carol Brady to conquer the stage.
Florence Henderson toured in Broadway productions of Oklahoma! and The Sound of Music, sung at the film version's post-premiere party at Americana Hotel on March 2, 1965, starred in the Lincoln Center South Pacific revival, among other credits. She certainly deserved to be there that evening.
Florence Henderson played in touring performances when Mary Martin was on stage so she was and not Julie Andrews the first who sang the song in.the soprano keys.Julie made the movie but not the role on stage
The rowdy arrangement given to the gorgeous _If I Loved You_ (for John Raitt) was utterly at odds with the tender lyric. How could any arranger growing up in the era of 50's musicals and in the shadow of Richar Rodgers think such a bombastic approach appropriate? Not to mention that 60yo John was getting a bit long in the tooth to slug it out that way with a big band. Less would have been more.
I agree about the orchestration, but Raitt did a damn good job with the song. I saw him sing it on Broadway in 1945, when I was eight years old. Moved me then, moves me now.
There's SERIOUS money to be made in television, regardless of how flimsy any plot or stupid any concept is. With negotiated residual payments from syndication she probably made more money from doing about 5 years of 30 (actually 21) minute episodes of the Brady Bunch than she made during the rest of her career on Broadway and whatever else she did in Hollywood. Even Angela Lansbury said the same thing about "Murder, She Wrote". But both women knew the score and the stage was always their first love and where they were both at their best too. Sadly, the much of the world will never know either actress for doing anything other than those two roles by both of them and will never know what great artists they really were when they were performing live in front of an audience.
John Raitt is her father. He's one of the greatest leading men in musical theatre history. Now we just have miserable also rans like Miranda and Platt. Sad.
Intersting I thought the Sound of Music was rushed and the orchestra not always in tempi with Florence or the other way around. But they may have been running out of time.

I totally love this clip. Just wonderful. This man is a true legend.
Florence Henderson, John Raitt and Tony Bennett were all incredible. Forty-two years later Tony is still getting it done.
Thanks for posting. It's great to see what a wonderful singer Florence Henderson was.
I was lucky to see her as Maria in the touring company of the Sound of Music and she was great!
Mary Martin, once in a lifetime! Bless you!

Not gonna lie, in a parallel universe Florence Henderson played Maria in the movie and Julie became Carol Brady.
It seemed that Mrs. Shirley Partridge, star of Oklahoma and Carousel, was nowhere to be found thus clearing the way for Mrs. Carol Brady to conquer the stage.

Florence Henderson, WOW!
Anyone know who sings the version of "Sweetest Sound" at 6:30?
Maybe Diahann Carroll

Julie Andrews should’ve sung the SOM!
