Is Ian Thorpe the guy in the black swimsuit at the end? I don't follow swimming but when I watched this video the one in blacks style seemed unique to me
Yes, he's the last in the relay. It's the head position. Must swimmers (if not all) are thought to swim looking down, however, Thorpe keeps his head forward and almost out of the water, as you can see in the video, like if he didn't even move it. By doing this he prevents his legs from rising which would make him lose power on his incredible kicks. His technique will remain to be my all time favorite because for some reason it causes a kind of "slow motion effect", especially on his stroke: it looks so much slower than the rest but he's actually faster, a lot faster.
Yeah, I noticed he had a very elegant looking form, like he was swimming a lot smoother than the other guys, it's like his strokes are more efficient so he's slowly gaining as they tire near the end. It seemed like he raced the same from start to finish too, I can see why people say he has a unique style, cool to learn this stuff :) thanks
His pull technique is called front quadrant pull. Grant Hackett and Sun Yang used it to win long distance races. Thorpe is one of few to win sprint race using this technique. Today's 50 and 100 race technique is like windmill action similar to Popov technique.
I remember this well. I would have been 14 at the time, watching this at Dad's house with family. Sydney 2000 was a very exciting time for the country.
What stuffed the USA was their last swimmer to say "we'll smash the like guitars" From that, it only inspired our Skippie team - enough to win with a world record.
Each team member did their part by keeping the heat on each stroke. It could have gone either way. Gr8 swim Team USA and Team Australia. Lovely to watch even 22 years later. What's amazing is Australia is a tiny nation without the big university lure of scholarships, yet we continue to keep the pace competitively with the big powerful nations in the pool. Evidently dodging big white's makes us speed freaks 🐬.
Ian Thorpe's technique; so unique and exquisit. A once in a lifetime swimmer for sure

It almost a waterpolo-esque technique. Interesting!
