    TYPO ALERT!!!
At 1:35 I wrote the Trajan bridge was built in 1903. It was really built in 103.
If you listen to the audio, I’m halfway through the sentence ‘the bridge was built 1900 years ago.’ Somehow I combined these two sentences. Fail.
    Anyway thanks for watching

I have to say this: the Dacians were not barbarians by any measure of the word.
The Dacians were the people that lived here 2000 years ago and they were protecting their country from the invaders, the Romans, who wanted to get the gold, silver and other important resources that existed plentiful in the area. Sarmisegetusa Regia (the real capital of the Dacians) only fell because of a betrayal and Decebal took his own life because he knew if he were captured, he's be humiliated by the Romans. The Romans almost completely erased it (as it was built in the mountains) and created Sarmisegetusa Ulpia Traiana in the lower lands, so it wouldn't be as easily defendable.
Also, before Decebal, another big leader of the Geto-Daco-Thracians was Burebista, who was another badass leader of Dacia before the time of Christ. He was able to unite all the scattered tribes of the area in one big powerful country. Great Dacia contained areas of (aside from current Romania): current Bulgaria, Ukraine, Republic of Moldova, Hungary. He was one of the first Dacian leaders to fight against the invasion of the Roman army.
The Dacians had an impressive culture, built cities especially in the mountains, knew how to properly work with gold, silver and other precious metals, were great merchants, were quite religious (Zamolxis was the main deity) and were very welcoming with anyone visiting them.

The second longest river on the continent after the Volga, the Danube crosses no less than 10 countries from its source to its discharge into the Black Sea, through the well-known Danube Delta on the territory of our country. The Danube originates in the Black Forest Mountains in Germany, and its route continues in Austria, Slovakia, Hungary, Croatia, Serbia, Romania, Bulgaria, the Republic of Moldova and Ukraine. Moreover, the Danube passes through four capitals - Vienna, Bratislava, Budapest and Belgrade.

It was not a barbaric king, even in the ancient Roman manuscripts the country was refers as “The Kingdom of Dacia”.
The country had a capital city, hundreds of tons of gold, etc, they even had water pipes bringing water from far distances, the Romans didn’t conquer the capital city just by battle, they cut the water supplies going into the city.
King’s Decebalus treasury was estimated at 165 tons of gold and about 330 tons of silver, the Romans found the treasury in the river Sargesia (modern river Strei).
The gold and silver combined in that treasury was worth about 3.9 billion sesterces or roughly 6 years worth of the entire military budget of the Roman empire.

Hello beautiful people, as so many wrote more complete information about the Dacian culture, I am not going to add anything except this: "The word "barbarian" came from the word "Barbar" which means people who have a big beard, or better said, the beard people. Since the Roman empire was, a very interesting culture, most of the depictions of their culture show faces and statues of men without any beards, For them, Dacians were barbarians because all most all had beards. Different culture for Romans as they used nearly everything that today you can find in Walmart, perfumes, powders, and sophisticated types of oil, from all over the conquered world. Fashion is also another cultural difference since Dacians were traditionalists. There are many to say about this but, one more thing, the Roman empire didn't conquer all of Dacia, only 12% of it. Emperor Traian knew Latin and also knew the language spoken by Dacians which was slightly different. He didn't need a translator when he had to talk with Dacian people. That says a lot about those times, and Traian really appreciated Dacians and Decebal as their king. Last thing to add, aside from that there are many people with the first name Decebal. The name Decebal in the old Dacian language means this, BAL, is the name of a bear. This is what they called bears and DECE, is number ten. Now, if you put them together, DECE+ BAL you got DECEBAL, which means a man with the power of ten bears. I apologize for my long dissertation, but I thought it is nice to share this with you. Have fun and enjoy your life guys.

I did the same route at the beginning of September, the barbarians were all the kingdoms that were not part of the Roman Empire, Dacia was a big powerful kingdom with strong cities and fortresses in the Orastie mountains in Hunedoara county you can visit the ruins of Daco-Roman cities.

Yes... you right but DECE it's the old latin language...
If you listen very carefully how the Italians pronounces 10 =Dieci 🙂
Dacian language it is the mother of the all latin languages... 7 left in the world... Romanian, French, Italian, Portuguese,Spanish... etc
      Bal or balus ... pluralism
They use to call bal a bear... language changed because we have some slavic influence as well... 🙂
When Traian came to fight Decebalul... hi said... " I came on my ancestors land"
      So... there we are...
The beautiful thing is ... whit the Romanian language... you can "bend or melt" the words and people from that region will understand you...
      That means... thousands of years...

The barbarian stereotype that was encouraged by the Romans still lives on to this day. However the Dacians were a settled people, they had towns and fortresses (a few ruins remain to this day), they had a capital at Sarmizegetusa (the ruins can be visited), they built roads, they mined gold (a prime reason why the Romans invaded), practiced agriculture and wine making. The Dacian Kingdom was a powerful entity at the time of Cesar and its king, Burebista, threw his support behind behind Pompey in the Roman civil war. At this time Dacia had conquered the Greek city states on the shores of the Black Sea (Tomis, Histria, Callatis) and it is said that Burebista could muster an army as large as 200,000. This figure is high for this era of antiquity and is disputed, though what isn't disputed is that the kingdom was a rich and influencial entity at the turn of the first millennium.

Romans are mixed descendants of Trojans and native Italians (Etruscan and many more). Trojans are from Thracian family, like the Dacians/Getae. So they are all related in one way or another.

Zarmizegethoúsa) or Ζερμιζεγεθούση (Zermizegethoúsē), was the capital and the most important military, religious and political centre of the Dacians before the wars with the Roman Empire. Erected on top of a 1200 m high mountain, the fortress, comprising six citadels, was the core of a strategic defensive system in the Orăștie Mountains
    Yes, they had towns... Cheers!

The Danube area you visited is actually a lake. A big dam was built downstream and the water level went up by 33m (I hope I am not mistaking here). What is really interesting is a cave (Peștera Ponicova) that starts on one side of the mountain and ends up in the Danube. A small boat can actually drop people directly inside the cave.
There is also another cave that can bd visited only from the water but I forgot the name.

OK, Steve, you should know by now that going faster than a Romanian train is not such a big deal. When it comes to trains, Romanian Railways tend to take things reeeaaaally slow 😀. Great video, once again (actually the videos are better and better every time) !!! Fan-facts about Decebal's statue : It' s not finished , this is not the final look, it's about 60% done (actually I kind of like it like this, rough, blended with the nature). The nose is the second draft - first version became dangerously unstable so they had to dynamite it. It took more than 10 years, a team of 12 sculptors - alpinists, more than 1 million dollars, paid by an amateur historian, (not Romanian authorities) - Iosif Constantin Drăgan ; the inscription at the base says in Latin: DECEBALUS REX - DRAGAN FECIT (King Decebal - made by Dragan). Right on the opposite side of Danube, on the Serbian part, there is a 2000 yo antique memorial plaque: "Tabula Traiana"(4 by 1,75 meters), risen by Emperor Traian to celebrate Romans' victory against Dacians - and the story is told on the Traian's column in Rome.
