Harley Benton SC Custom Review

- Here's my Harley Benton SC Custom - one of the nicest guitars I've ever played. For a budget guitar, this Harley Benton comes with some great features, like the Grover tuners and comfortable tuners. No rough edges, no sharp frets, and proper binding!
It goes to show that price is no longer a reflection on instrument quality.

I got a B-Stock guitar exactly the same as this. I was amazed how well made it was and how it sounded and played. I've been playing for over 50 years and have had all the big names and lesser known great guitars like Heritage and Carvin and this guitar is up there with the best. When you factor in the price it is insanely good.
Oh man, I've seen this video so many times in a few days !
I ordered this beautiful guitar recently and I just can't wait to try it myself, you're just motivating me more.
Mine should arrive on Friday in France. I'm a beginner, but this Harley Benton will be my first "real" guitar.
If you want the lil' story, I started to play with a terrible, cheap electric I bought in an art store at night. It was a little old and (I think) broken, and pieces were missing. It was just an old sunburst exposition model for everyone to play, from a french brand.
It was the "everyone's" electric, you know. And even a good amp couldn't make it sound clean enough, the buzzing sound in the backround was sooo lound and the hambuckers were terrible, I knew it even if I even started playing. But at the time I just wanted to learn how to play guitar, so I bought it for 90 euros a long time ago... And I quickly realized it was unplayable once I got home. Actually, it looked a cheap version of a Strat, its chords were really far away from the fretboard and the neck was REALLY thick. It was cheap and not very heavy. But I kinda got used to it. What a fool my younger self was! I'm still young but wow, the difference... I hope it's gonna be crazy.
Now I can't believe I'm going to get my first cool and black guitar, this one ! And of a known brand. I'm so excited to play songs on that until my fingers break 'cause it looks (and sounds) so clean. I mean, the sound is so neat, it almost shocks me. It makes one hell of a contrast with my old crappy guitar.
And I also really like your playing man!
i ordered one, waiting for it to be shipped, how did you like it?
A beautiful guitar, I've had mine for several months now and I'm quite pleased with it. 👍👍👍😃😃😃
How much
It is a copy of an ESP Eclipse, not a Gibson. The body is much thinner. I bought 1 of these SC-Custom P90 guitars about 6 months ago, it is amazing. Also, the volute at the base of the headstock is to add strength to a weak area (where Gibsons break) under the truss rod cutout.
I recently bought a B stock SC-Custom with the humbuckers and it is just amazing. £145 delivered!!! I am over the moon. No obvious issues, possibly some scuffing on the matte top. The tone pot on the humbucker version is a push pull single coil option. Everyone I have shown it to are blown away. I am just stating out and I already have an Epiphone Les Paul standard model. I love playing my Harley Benton SC-Custom and I love looking at it. Makes me want to play it more. Thanks for the review and glad you like you HB P90, your top looks gloss as apposed to my matte finish. I also noticed the nut was a bit high on one side but I think they have recessed the strings further on the higher side so not an issue. My action is set a bit high so I need to adjust that but those are minor niggles. Again, mine was £145 incl VAT and delivered! So chuffed.
This is a beauty! I have an SC Custom 450 (last year's model name) black satin finish with gold hardwear B stock and an SC 500 BK, a Gibson L.P. Black Beauty copy. I got the gold top for the P 90s. All of them are fine instruments!
Great review. I have the Gold Top with P90's. It plays and sounds way more expensive than it cost
Sounds like something Steve should buy. He’s probably scared though
Great video mate!! Such a sexy guitar! Sounds amazing too. What a bargain. Like you said, double the price and it'd still be a great buy!
Ah man it’s a total beauty. One other benefit that I forgot to mention in the video is that because it’s so cheap, you don’t have to worry about it. I love my Les Paul but have to keep it out of the way of the kids in case they ruin it but with this one, I couldn’t care less if they knocked it over
I have a HB TE40. Paid a whole £144 for it. It looks fantastic and the pickups are much better than I expected. No Grover tuners, but what a guitar. Nice video
Is that the carved top telecaster? Their guitars are so good. Got a 3/4 sized one on its way for the kids and may order another one.
@@PherotoneStudios Yes that's the one. Not very good at playing it though. lol
It doesn’t matter, as long as it looks cool, which it does
nice guitar! do uou know the paragrym with p90's? its a beast you can find it on the gear4music site.
Dave Simpson plays a white one on youtube and is realy crazy about it
Have mine for a year now with a f rose had it set up or the money big score. Enjoy. .......
I'm not the least surprised, I got an HB acoustic, a Martin D-41 copy, for like 259 pounds and it's a damn good guitar, the sound, the make, you wouldn't believe what you get, the reaction was just like yours. These p90s sound really good, it would be really cool if they got you a sig, that could be the next thing! How's the action from the factory? Also, can you please tell us what's that you're playing at 14:18 and 10:26, I need to learn that!
They’re just so good!
The action was lovely straight out of the box. I haven’t adjusted it at all!
10:26 is a new thing I wrote which will be turned into a song as part of my Making Music series very soon.
14:18 is one of my band’s songs called Drive. No longer available on iTunes etc but we may do a new version one day. If not, there will probably be a live version of it on my band’s channel once the big studio is rebuilt and we’re back up and running.
Also I’m going to do a lot of song dissections of the things I play, just like the two you pointed out. Something I’ve been wanting to do for a while. Coming very soon...
Turns out there’s already a recording on the song at 14:18 “Drive” online : ruclips.net/video/XLCXym0RN58/видео.html
Looks amazing, sounds great and not much more than a bullet strat, whats not to like 👍🤟
I’ve owned a bullet strat and still own a bullet Tele. It’s incomparable. The bullets are great but they feel like a cheap guitar.
These are cheap but feel great. I’m considering getting a humbucker version and one of their bass guitars but also actively avoid having too many of the same make of guitar. Not sure what to do. Must....buy....more........
@@PherotoneStudios yeah totally agree, I have just picked up a purple bullet strat of andertons to go with my purple tele, dont know why as I don't even like strats to play tho they do look cool, 🤣
I was looking at those new purple strats and decided not to. Love the colour but I already have a strat I rarely play
@@PherotoneStudios yeah I won't lie, mine was a slightly tipsy purchase, bought because I love the colour, I got 4 purple guitars now 😃
Brilliant. We’ve all been there and if I’d thought about it when drunk, I’d also won one.
Looks exactly like my LTD EC-256 from Vietnam. I guess they are made in the same factory.
Definitely. The cover plate is identical to an LTD
I bought a B Stock last week and i had to send it back it was so bad. Looked as if it had been dropped face first and the high E string had smashed a groove into the first 6 frets making it unplayable. The gold covers on the pickups were severely tarnished and the finish on the guitar was totally horrendous and to think they were selling it only £15 cheaper than the normal ones is ridiculous. I will be ordering another however because where i could actually play on the guitar it was great, i was blown away by the feel and sound.
The Blackstar guy! Ahoy!
That’s terrible. They shouldn’t have even sent that out. Strange that the frets were dented. Maybe it was poorly transported and that string was squashed against the frets with a lot of pressure while it travelled thousands of miles from wherever to Germany.
Which model did you go for?
I’ve got another one on the way but it’s only a 3/4 sized kids Les Paul rip-off. If it’s terrible, it’ll go back
@@PherotoneStudios I went for the exact one you have in the video except i got the gold humbuckers. There was no damage on the box what so ever, i think it has happened in the factory before Thomann even got it as the strings weren't damaged or bent. I've had guitars come to me for repair with the exact same issue and 100% of the time the strings show damage too and these didn't so it makes me think they had been changed. The pickup covers looked as though someone had spilled oil on them and when trying to rub it off took the gold plating with it and then just stopped and though 'ah that'll do, they'll never notice' The finish on the body was the worst I've ever seen. Paint splatter everywhere, paint runs all over, it looked like it had a dusting of saw dust and they painted over it and the binding had gouges in it, it wasn't even straight in places ha ha. I can not believe they even sent the guitar out like that. For £15 less i though i might get 1 tiny mark or something that i could live with, even if it had just been the pickup issue i could have dealt with that as i'll replace them any way. Putting it right would have meant new pickup covers at the very least, a re-fret of the first 6 stings at the very least and a complete respray. I hope i just got a guitar that slipped through the net, there's no way that should have been sent out even as B stock, but to be fair Thomann were great, they sent me the returns form straight away no questions asked and like i say i will order another just not B stock this time.
P.S hope you're still liking the amp!
Gibson can stick it they are way to expensive. Im getting one of these what a lovely guitar
I thought the volute was to prevent the headstock from breaking, as notoriously seems to happen with LPs, excuse me, SCs 😉
Yeah I’m pretty sure it’s for additional strength. They don’t stop neck breaks though but they must be better than not having one.
I just ordered this guitar today.....
Are the P90s much noisier than humbuckers?
No
Hi, what is the weight of this guitar?
3,4kg
Is it anygood for blues?
Anything is good for blues. I prefer Harley Bentons to Squiers
It’s a copy of an esp eclipse not a Les Paul hence the thinner body and control layout
Needs a darker fret board
Ebony?
Bet you won’t review my channel lol
