All my friends agree, Warren is just a pleasant personality to have on these type of videos. Usually the people making these can be rather smug, or dealing with low end gear. Here we get to see a modest, informative person with gear some of us haven't been able to be around. Love it

Love to see that you use the technique to get feedback from the amp by letting the guitar player be in the same room while tracking. Brings a lot of life to the sound imo.
One question: when you talk about the KM:s you have the phase aligned to the snare. Why the snare and not the bass drum?

I know what you mean about splashing out for new amps most of my amps are/were preloved.
I got a new Fender Bassbreaker 15 last year after the Peavey Valveking 20 I'd bought kept letting me down, most unreliable.
BB15 is a great little all-rounder, not your typical Fender sound either. A bit more "British" when it's driven.
THAT Bassbreaker prompted me to give the Laney IRT Studio 15 a go. Flexible valve amp, low Watts. Found a nice used one on Reverb.
Touted as a "Metal" style amp, it gives good all round tone if you back the gains off AND provides three channels. All great when looking for a tone for a track.
Neumanns - Visiting SARM West one time, early 90s, I expressed surpised at seeing a U87 Inside a kick drum. Big money, rough job and all that.
Engineer laughed and said it was the best for the job, great sound and the highest Spl level handling mic they had.
Couldn't argue with that. Science and stuff.

Hi Warren! Love the in studio videos! Wanted to make a video request. I see you mention so many great microphones by their number and show what they're used for and it looks and sounds awesome in a mix. Unfortunately, when I see you using all those mics on a kit or the room etc. it looks and sounds great but I don't know a. The microphone you're talking about and b. the model number. Also I'm not sure what it is about, let's say a U67, as an overhead, that gives the drums a great sound as an overhead mic (from an EQ aspect). So for those of us still in the early stages of developing our ears sonically could you do a video listing all the name brand microphones, Neumann, AKG, Rode, Beta, Shure, etc., all their different models and what their characteristic sound really is? I understand that's a lot but it's all because I want to learn. Thanks is for uploading such informative content!

Beautiful studio. Interesting kit. I have and love sonor prolite maple drums and sonor Benny greb sig snare. Toms are just tone heaven and the snare is 13 but cuts as good as my 14 grestch alumunimum. I use Sabians hhx line, it's a higher up line than the AA line and our a lil darker but they still cut and have a lot of character. If you get a chance check try out Sabians hhx line. The hhx evolution for crashes and ride and hhx stage hats on hats. Let me know what you think, darker than AA but very versatile and still cut. Love the lewitt drum mic pack you advised me about. The 640 Rex dual element kick mic is great too, dynamic n condensor in one mic. Thinking about getting large diaphragm mics for overheads but the lct 340s sound rly good and in my small drum room I heard its best to stay with small condensors? How do you like distressors as compressors for drums? I'm thinking of getting the stereo one they offer.

Yamaha's "original" / genuine bespoke Subkick has been discontinued for several years now. Although several retail alternatives popped up (the MoonMic comes to mind).
On my latest session (first few takes of one of the songs from my band's upcoming album), i went with Ryan's tip (from Creative Sound Lab), and used the 12" from a guitar combo, within the combo itself, as a "kick out", and it turned out quite nice :)

Thanks for the great vid, Wazza. I feel very reassured by the fact that you use a small amp for guitars. I've got a small Valvetronix AD15VT Vox amp and I've always thought it sounded great just miked up with a 57 on the front. It's not massively loud (the neighbours are still talking to me) and it didn't cost me much. I've recorded with Line 6 emulators and big Marshall amps but I've never felt anything has quite come as close to getting the sound that I want. Thanks again! :-)

Hi Warren, I came back to this vid, as I'm developing a portable rig for recording, and there's some great info here to draw inspiration and ideas from. Obviously the studio you're in, here, is a proper studio, with separate rooms and integral wiring systems, which allow you to work with amps mic'd remotely. That aspect has also been useful, however, I'm wondering; how to best set up a room in a situation when you only have one room to work with, but you still want to track a band live. How would you approach the layout for the room, vis-a-vis the placement of amps, drum kit, vocals, etc to reduce bleed etc?

Hi Warren, great video! I always have wondered how much in the box and out the box EQ you use? I know it will always depend on the outboard gear you have, but lets say you have a few great EQ's like we have in this video. Would you use the outboard gear to get the EQ you want and permanently record it it? Or do small Eq setting and do most of it in post? Same with compresiion. Thanx in advance. Have a great week!

Another great video from you warren, l just wanted to know how many inputs went into pro tools for that session and also am always scared of committing eq's and colouring to print as l always feel it's hard to undo that perfect take if there's a problem, is it not easier just to have the raw takes and apply what you want once it's in the DAW? Hi +dk rocfam Great question! It was around 6-7 hours for complete set up of the instruments, mics, level checks, getting tones, we loaded in around 10am and were tracking the album at 4pm. We probably could be much quicker next time, but we spent a long time choosing which drums, guitar amps, mics etc to use. We were there for a week so there was more time for care and we didn't have to hurry! Have a marvellous time recording and mixing, many thanks Warren

Hey Warren, may I suggest: If you take 20 christmas lights, the small incandescent ones, and put them inline with the Roadie speaker, they will glow or light depending on how high the volume and how many lightbulbs. The less lightbulbs, the more they light. Now the fun part, remember all optical compressors have a lightbulb inside that lights?, well this design not only burns the current, but reacts with a variable signature in alignment to the standard output of a small amp, in turn, getting rid of the volume, but leaving the tone and distortion, to a point, where the volume knob becomes a simple distortion knob. So if you're in a bedroom, or in an apartment, you now have the fix for your parents or neighbors volume problem. Is it 100%, no, but is it amazing, I would say well, its cool. So in summary, how do you turn your $75 Epiphone valve amp into a tone machine, with dampening like an la-2a, that atomically tames the harsh volume that's been driving you crazy?... well, your mom's been throwing it away for the past 20 years,...it's the old christmas lights....and yes, you can add more for big amps, but be really careful. Don't get hurt, cause high voltage is a real killer, so safety glasses and gloves for all electronic hacking. Switching tracks, you should try a Variac on everything there. You can vary the voltage on anything analog in your studio especially the preamps and gutiar tube all-analog amps. The lower the voltage, the softer it gets, and yes, it should work on tube mic's too.. Remember, in the 50's, in the US, it was'nt 125v, it was much, much lower. And, most of the circuits you're working with all originated in the 50's and 60's, but they were just repurposed and rebranded. enjoy, thx, scotty

+Produce Like A Pro : No problem, I forgot to note, there's a small box called a Cloudlifter CL-1 Mic Activator. This may help you with your long cable run acting like a toilet for your high frequencies. Again, no expert here, but long light guage cables is badness, and acts like a high frequency eliminator. The CL-1 may mask that problem, but the tradeoff is it does change the sound. If you switch to a tube mic setup, that problem should go away. So there it is, just get a 1/2 dozen U67's and a 1/2 dozed U47's and all of your filtering problems will be gone,..along with your car, house, dog, etc.

    Hi Warren.
You mentioned how the long GTR cable runs cause a lot of high end loss. Have you ever come across any means of having a balanced connection for the majority of a cable run to retain the high end?
I've seen some 1:1 unbalanced to balanced (and vice-versa) boxes that might do the trick, but I don't know if there would be an issue with the impedance of a GTR or large signal of a speaker cable.
Have you ever done or know anyone who does something similar?
I imagine that it would be particularly useful for long speaker cable runs when you have the head in the control room and cab elsewhere.
Also, how were the hi-hat mics placed? It looks like their angled over the hat pointed slightly off centre, but might that not give the "washy" sound from the air when the hat opens and closes?

Hi Warren, Great video Can I ask? In your studio you said that you are using your SSL Console for summing, do you send separate tracks, or Sub mixes of drums guitars ,bass etc. Also I get some phasey comb filtering on my thickened vocals (Your Trick), When coming back into the desk, Latency issues is there a rule to this or do I need to nudge things around to bring them back into phase.
Note this project was first mixed ITB then I decided on the desk summing. Probably should have started with the summing inserted early on then latency would be factored in from the beginning.
P.S. I’m defiantly joining the Accademy as soon as Andy Wallace finishes a tutorial on MWM.
I, we owe you a lot. Thanks

In my home studio I’m using Logic Pro X into a behringer X32 with the Midas Pre amps it’s our bands live mixer it sounds great. There’s a separation that happens that I don’t get with summing ITB. thanks Warren for this thoroughly enjoyable and complete hybrid studio tracking biopsy ,...I have 2 questions for you,...1 if I understood you correctly your bass chain in this session was a Direct Line Into a Focusrite Pre, then a Pultec style EQ in the lunch box format with the mid range dropped down a bit ....the other bass track was a cabinet mic'd?. with same EQ settings?
2nd question,.. in the Tony Franklin recording , I assume that was done in your personal studio, what chain specifically was used for that? ..because, i really thought it was a great sounding bass recording based on the monitoring i heard in your video. Thanks so much!

    • @Producelikeapro
      @Producelikeapro  8 лет назад

Hi +James Fehr Thanks for the great questions! Both Pultecs are slightly different so I had different EQ settings, I actually boosted the lows on both the di and the cab. The Tony Franklin set up was the same as the Billy Sheehan one, I used a BAE DMP for the DI and I believe a BAE 1073, a similar set up to Chris Chaney as well. You seem to be sticking to the D112 for Kick Drum.

Since I need to grab one pretty soon, I really hesitate between theses 2 models...
    What do you think?
I also was wondering how you kept focused on such a week of recording, not lose concentration or get carried away?
I assume the band came in real prepared but these are long days of recording... How do you handle that part?
