The only danger you are in is getting your phone snatched, keep alert when walking in less populated city areas WITH devices out... that's it, nobody will bother you if you're just walking.

Golf estates . 5 Black people townships. 6. Coloured people townships That’s how the apartheid separated people and their places of living but today we are almost living mixed. One city with lots of different living standards

Walked those areas, I would say it's safe though U just need to stay vigilant, all about being aware of your surroundings. Extra vigilance in the CBD.Stay positive and u will be just fine.
Walking around the outskirt of Johannesburg (outside the CBD) you get to see the normal chilled life of the city. I'm talking about the suburbs where most development is situated now. I'd tell you not to go to the city/downtown area because things are hectic there. If you plan to go to the city centre, rather try Maboneng and Braamfontein but better if you go with someone who knows the city. Glad you are enjoying our city. It has a bad reputation but native joburgers Love it regardless.

Yes people dont walk around there a lot, I guese there is not the ordinary everyday forks residing nearby(except who commute in to work by that Mall & sorrundings), most of those who stay there do drive. That should explain the absence of many pedestrians. The road you were walking is called Collette Drive

I lived there drom 94 to 99 and i can confirm this country can be dangerous. I lived in observatory, a nice area but i was scared to go berea, hillbrow, downtown and some part of yeoville alone...right now even observatory, bruma, kensington etc are bad...jozy has gone really bad with crimes
