  • Your own laser cutter designs with Inkscape: In this video we will take a look
at a simple way how to design 3D objects for the laser cutter.
We use Inkscape and a free Boxmaker to make a holder for toothbrushes and a
razor from acrylic. The video should get you started to design your own laser
    cutter projects in Inkscape.

I set Inkscape to default to mm, and change movement steps to 1mm (arrow key moves object 1mm, shift-arrow moves 10mm). Also, my laser usually cuts a 0.2mm kerf so I change the indent/outdent size to 0.1mm which makes it easy to adjust for kerf. However, I often find it easier to create a design in Fusion 360 and use the (free) Dxf4lasercutting extension to turn a face into a dxf, with kerf adjustment. Thanks for the video.

Karl Fimm There is a separate Video on how to create laser cut designs in FreeCAD - which I tend to use for more complex designs.

The reasons for us using FreeCAD over Fusion are explained here: ruclips.net/video/ojxa552elD0/видео.html

Great, thanks a lot. May I know the settings for the acrylic cut? I am trying to cut my 2mm acrylic, mirrors aligned, focus length as well, but struggling with the cut at all. I need to go like on 70%, 8mm/s and 3 times to achieve cut, which is slightly melted and not sharp at all...:-(

Vit Tuhy There are several kind of transparent plastics. It is important to use PMMA / Plexiglas.
I usually go with 15mA, 5mm/sec and get a clean cut after the first pss.

Thank you for making this video. But, how do we import the box file we created in Boxes.PY into Inkscape. I can't find any were on the site to download the file.

Richard King If you have the page open just go to file, save as in the browser and save the svg file on the disk. You can then import the file in Inkscape with File, Import

@@WayofWood Thanks but my Google Chrome doesn't show the File Menus at the top of the page, and when I right click and the "save as" appears and click on that it doesn't give me the option to save SVG, just All Files.

Richard King It should work if you just press CTRL+S and then type file.svg. You should then be able to import the file in Inkscape.
Here is also a detailed explanation how to save a file in Chrome: www.dummies.com/education/internet-basics/how-to-save-a-web-page-in-google-chrome/
