I considered paying the Adobe toll but ultimately decided as a hobbyist the annual expense just doesn't make sense. This really did get me pointed in the right direction in learning and honing some skill with Inkscape. Alex, you are a great teacher. Thank you.

I've been an ad hoc user of Inkscape for years for various projects. I've also spent hours pondering why my designs didn't translate to the real world, via various different bits of hardware proprietary software. Thanks to you, in an hour I've learned more than years of cursing and googling. Thankyou!

Excellent Video! I manily use Inkscape as a design aid for Fusion 360. What I really appreciate is I don't have to export the Inkscape design as a DXF file nor as a "vanilla" SVG. Fusion will import the document directly.

    • @LaserEverything

The only reason I don't like saving as DXF is because it imports every line as individual line segments instead of paths and for complex graphics it can be a huge overload on ezcad trying to ungroup them all.

    • @LaserEverything

R12 does technically work but causes trouble in ezcad with complicated graphics as it imports polygons as individual line segments. Often crashes ezcad just trying to ungroup them, so I tend to stay away from it.

I just bought the x-tool and learningto use it. So, I designed an image in Inkscape and used the set clip feature to trim my design. I followed all your steps after making my design. The only design I had an issue with was the one I used set clip feature. When I imported into light burn, it showed the parts I clipped out. I have been messing with it for 2 hours and can't figure it out! Do you know what I may be missing?

If you add some extra nodes to the circles in Inskscape then EZcad will display them properly so you wont have to jump around with converting file types. It only happens with perfect complete circles with no intersections as far as i can tell.

I'm new to all of this. I have been using Inkscape in addition to Photoshop, Illustrator, Cricut Design Space, and occasionally/rarely, Canva (soon to add Lightburn to the mix). When it comes to Inkscape and the Adobe apps, is there where a way to have the app do an automatic node reduction without having to go through the hundreds of thousands of nodes that appear on a rasterized PNG of a photo as doing an image trace to vectorize it? It takes FOREVER to delete all those nodes and then go back and curve all the lines myself, especially because I often work with stacked layers.

@17:29 Had you held the Ctrl key the rotation would have been in 15* increments. Also, when you typed your text, it was set to center rather than left or right justify. That was a good thing as all you would have had to do was hold Ctrl and rotate 6 steps. Fill and Stroke can also be adjusted quickly via the X and the colors at the bottom of the window. Shift and click the X will delete the stroke and just clicking the X will delete the fill. For EZCAD did you try dxf or one of the other svg types in inkscape?

At around 4:20, it shows that you can click on individual letters, but mine didn't do that, and I followed everything to a T. Mine shows the whole text word I entered as a layer. Yours shows individual letters as layers. My Inkskape is v1.3.2, a fresh install, and I set up a template just like you did... if that helps.
I did find out that for whatever reason, my version of Inkskape, by default, has all layers already combined after you "Path to Object" on a text box. Maybe the developers decided that should be the default rather than individual letters being layers by default.
So... The latest version has all text combined as a single layer by default, but you have to choose Path>Split Path for it to make each letter its own layer! I'll have to see if this is a setting that can be toggled as far as a default or not. I'm not yet certain whether I'd want it this way or the other way around (as seen in the vid) yet. I noticed the warning about Path Effects requiring that you only "Select only one path, shape, clone or group" or it won't work. It looked like you had to do an extra step with the older version, whereas the new one didn't require extra step. So I suppose you can get right to working with the Path Effects with this new version without having to Combine paths.

Did you manually create it via Inkscape/another software or did you import a picture and used a feature that captures the logo while removing the background? (is there even a feature like that? One cool thing about Vector programs (You pro guys can cover your ears now) is that you can resize the objects to be as small as u want without messing them up. think about it (tic tok tic tok, lol). Theoretically no matter if u had a million engineering vector drawings. u only need one page to hold them all/ u could open a file and see nothing but a page full of very small 'dots', so dense the page is black with them. but if u zoom in you could see each pixel holds a drawing of a mechanism with 1000 parts in it. Now the file size would be so huge n entire hard drive might not hold it, lol, but its possible. So make the elements of your drawing, and like here save the original object to a small area of the page and use a duplicate to apply effects to, this way you can always go back and edit it, OR see where you came from

At 22:22, when you hold Shift+Ctrl and left-click drag your circle larger, it stays centered. On v1.3.2, doing that same function doesn't keep the circle centered. However, if I select everything including the text and do the Shift+Ctrl method, it DOES keep everything centered, and it even has the crosshair in the middle when I'm enlarging or reducing. There's no crosshair when I try to do it to only the circle though.

The problem I'm having using this software (saved to EPS, converted to SVG from that website) is that none of the mm dimensions in Inkscape convert correctly when importing those vectors into EZCAD2. I'm not sure why this is happening. A rectangle vector created in Inkscape which is 48.265 mm x 74.105 mm becomes a whopping 182.045 mm x 297.615 mm when imported into EZCAD2. That's an odd enlargement ratio of about 1:3.772 for the x-axis, and 1:3.773 for the y-axis. Anyone know what's causing this issue?

I can appreciate the time you took on this and looking at all of the comments, I can see others do as well. But for a 101, in my opinion, you go too fast and jump around with explaining things. I have never touched Inkscape or Ai and was hoping to get a beginner class. I'm not trying to degrade you or your video, but I just wanted to put this out there for you in case you were looking for feedback. Again, you took your time to do a free video and I can appreciate that.

51:22 watched for a while then came across this. I cringed. Scale everything you can in Inkscape first. GIMP works with Raster images which do not scale cleanly and pixelate images. Inkscape works with vectors which are infinitely and cleanly scalable. Do any and all scaling in inkscape then finishing touches in the Raster program.

unfortunately all software designed to allow human creativity is this way. its a result of its organic growth in capabilities while trying to avoid u having to relearn everything on using the program as it evolves.
