Spier & Mackay x Fox Bros tweed sport coat review

  • This is my review of my only tweed sport coat. I think it’s absolutely fabulous for the price unless you don’t like Made in China products. The Neo 2 cut fits very nicely, between classic and modern slim. The clear star of the show is the Fox Brothers tweed, in a rare sort of Prince of Wales Check. The 370gsm weight works almost all year round in California, where I live.

Traditionally one doesn't usually button the top of three (nor the bottom). That lapel drape you're referring to is called a 3x2 roll. If you take out your steamer you can get that roll to softly turn just above the top button. As for the canvas lining, a jacket at this price point used glued basting, that is, the lining is glued against the fabric with minimal stitching. (Avoid too much dry cleaning for this reason.) On high end jackets that interior lining that gives the jacket shape is entirely sewn in---and requires labor, time, and skill. This is a fine jacket. Look for the most subtle colors in the tweed and match a shirt or tie to one of those "hidden" colors. Enjoy!

Another great video! Tweed (especially Harris Tweed) is so awesome!! I wish more young men would try it. They will be pleasantly surprised about how it elevates their style.

Glad you liked to video!! And yeah I'm CRAZY about tweed now - there's really nothing quite like it. I really need to try Harris tweed, as you say, some day.

Nice sport coat. Like someone said in one of the replies. In a 3x2 roll jacket which you have. Its recommended never to button the very top button. It should remain hidden under your lapel. I noticed when you button the top it makes your lapel bunch up and it should be laying very flat against your chest

Another interesting video. 😁👍 It looks great on you. Fits well. We love our tweed here in the UK. Harris and Donegal seem to be the most mentioned here, although Donegal is more a style than a brand from what I can tell.
I’m very much a fan of the tweed sports jacket with jeans and brogues. It’s a look you see often here. Maybe more a middle aged guy look, but I think it looks great on anyone. Chuck a Barbour over the top and you wouldn’t look out of place in any city in the UK.
Apparently the tweed colours are designed to echo the colours found in the Scottish countryside.

All this info is so great! Although I love my American jeans and boots, I think I naturally gravitate toward UK style in many ways. I picked up a Barbour this last winter, and it quickly became my favorite overcoat.

your range of motion is due to the high armholes. that’s a sign of good tailoring. expensive tailors for shirts and jackets are always doing the higher armholes. that’s why suit jackets with high armholes are not bunching up when you move your arms

Great video! Definitely helped me as an American now living in Europe where more formal wear isn't as uncommon. I just graduated from university and currently looking for a proper big boy job so a cool sport coat that matches your coat's casual/formal level would be perfect.

Surgeons cuffs is why I went with Indochino. IC has its issues and lack of some of the fancy fabrics. But they have alot of decent suits. And its custom to you..

I’ve never been a coat wearer (excluding hoodies) until the tail end of last winter. I started thrifting and found a tweed jacket but I live in AZ so it didn’t get much wear. Since I’ve found like 7 sports coats of good quality that either fit me well or that I amateurly tailored to fit. Needless to say I have December and January covered.

I got a pair of the buzz rickson chinos you reviewed. I like them they were a little shiny and stiff but they broke in really fast.

Handsome fabric with a very versatile colorway. Be sure to open up those back vents by removing the X stitches.

Oh yeah, if you look in most of the pictures, the X stitches were removed. They’re only in that initial try-on clip…But anyways, thanks! I love this fabric!
