I dislike the alignment chart. Being evil could mean you're simply a jerk or have just more self centered ideals rather than being actively evil. A lawful evil thief for example. Evil because they are a thief. Lawful because they wouldn't kill however as they have standards. Makes you a bad guy but not a BAD guy. I wish the alignment was more fleshed out

A lot of players don't seem to understand that an evil alignment can very often simply mean "selfish" in a more general sense. Not hostile towards the party, your character could even love them and his/her "selfishness" could be about protecting them and/or screwing other people over to help the party. What it certainly should never do is derail the campaign or be an excuse for the player being selfish.

A few suggestions, I've played with some excellent chaotic characters. The important thing is that 'chaotic' is not 'random', and this means that chaotic characters can easily be very different from one another. For example, one campaign had a half-orc Ranger who was Chaotic Neutral, a Chaotic Good Halfling Druid, a Chaotic Evil goblin, and a Chaotic Neutral gnome barbarian. The Half-orc's backstory was that she was raised amongst racist humans who shunned and expelled her when she hit her teens and her orcish heritage becomes more obvious, do she learned to live self-sufficiently in the wild believing that you can't rely on others, only yourself. This obviously lends itself to being played as a Rugged Individualist who is bad at co-operating with her team because she doesn't trust them. The Halfling's backstory was that she was a middle-aged woman who thought everyone could communicate with nature in the way that she could - a classic eccentric - who went wandering after her village was destroyed and slaughtered by Lawful armies. She played much more like a slightly dotty kindly grandparent. The gnome was essentially written to be autistic, so had a very firm set of what she thought was logical and made sense to do, and if it conflicted with social norms and laws she would follow her own judgement rather than those conventions. The goblin was a sneaky little fucker, constantly stealing small items etc., but we had a great emergent storyline of the half-orc learning to trust him as he tried to learn this 'being nice' thing because his friends got cross with him whenever he did something evil. He was probably the closest to the 'chaotic evil means I do what I want' stereotype; but even with that you can do interesting things. All 4 characters could be very unpredictable - running off to examine an interesting-looking butterfly; insisting that the merchant caravan they were acting as bodyguards for give 10% of their fruit to the frogmen who ambushed them as a road maintenance fee, instead of killing the frogmen as the scenario was geared towards; abandoning their position without telling anyone because they thought they could be more effective in a different part of the battlefield; and setting up elaborate traps to protect what they saw as 'their own' - but none of the characters were being unpredictable 'for the lols' or 'for the evils'.
tl;dr - 'chaotic' means 'individualistic', not 'stupid', and that can be represented in a variety of ways that make an interesting game for everyone.

@@stephaniejenkins7822 @thomkirkwood2356 has the right idea. Bit of a late reply because I had been on for a bit but here is my approach to it.
What I have started to do is finding a method of controlled chaos.
For my fairy, the chaotic neutral alignment manifested in a sense of misunderstanding. Her culture and actions would appear chaotic to the locals but they are guided by structure, customs, and ceremonies of her culture.
In that same sense, everyone else seemed chaotic to her! And while she did attempt to learn local customs, she would often misinterpret them, adding another layer of chaotic charm!
As for the others, I view chaotic good as chaos without intent. Or accidental chaos.
Perhaps an artificer who is caught up with their experiments that they are often disorganized and have to check multiple pockets before finding what they intended to pull out.
For the biggest problem child-chaotic evil-It is chaos without concern. Or the chaos of results. You have a goal but you dont care what happens as long as you get the results you seek! What makes it such a problem is that players often use it as an excuse to do what they want and expect no consequences. That is true for CN as well but it is most noticeable with CE!
All the defining elements that make a character chaotic are-for the most part-cross compatible and very much open to individual interpretation!
The biggest suggestion I can give in a more broad sense is that chaos works best when it is used in smaller and more personal instances. It makes for a less disruptive experience! However if there is downtime and or the dm shifts spotlight to you, go big but dont over do it and save the big chaotic moments for something special!
      Tldr;
Chaos can vary from misunderstandings to substantial personality quirks.
      Maintain a direction.
Stick to personal moments most of the time.

The way everyone met up is we have to share a room in the full inn because a ton of people are there looking for a crazy power for a variety of reasons (allowing for selfish motivations to exist) his character caused problems for people but never to the detriment to the story more just to himself honestly. He was very personally motivated and his backstory made a lot of sense for why he is the way he is. There are several moments where he does objectively bad things but there are also moments of clarity where he's horrified by the consequences. Hes given a knife by a character that is super cursed, it insta kills on a certain roll of higher and if it doesn't kill it leaves a person in a horrible state and this was given to someone super likely to use it but the first time he does its a harrowing moment and suddenly this character flips his shit over it and it launches him down a path of learning to be better and the character never fundamentally changes! The Npc's behaviour will begin to change toward ALL the group because of the CE character actions. Guards will begin to be called, Wanted posters will appear....etc. PC's think that they are the only one that can level up, they are wrong, they are only some of this generation of "heroes". I'm not in the business of killing my PC's BUT if characters, expect kings and fair maiden to acknowledge their feats then they have to equally expect their evil deeds to be noticed and have to brace for what will be coming their way.

I often find it's the "lawful, chaotic, neutral" part that plays the most prominent role when it comes to evil and good characters. A lawful evil and a lawful good character can efficiently work together because they're both lawful. They have the same end goals but use different tactics to get what they want. Often it works well because one will do what the other can't or won't do, leading to a sort of "good cop, bad cop" situation. But chaotic evil does not have the same goals and is often misplayed by players who don't understand the concept or want to use it as an excuse to do whatever they want because 'it's what my character would do!'

@@hipopotamodata9932 CE definitely can be played by players. Evil isn't so much about enjoyment or not; you could have a Lawful good character who enjoys murdering evil monsters in line with the creed they live by, for example.
Evil is more a total lack of morality or conscience. An average person wouldn't murder another due to a belief in either the law or a compassion for a fellow human. A CE character does not believe in the law and has little or no compassion for those they believe to be their equals.
A key part, however, is that this doesn't mean a CE character will kill simply because it's 'easier' at the time. A chaotic stupid one would, yes, but the best CE characters have at least some social sense. They might realise that the law could catch up with them and hinder them later on or they might realise their companions would think differently of them. They understand consequences, even if they dislike that they exist.
A CE can also still have friendships. They can still get angry when someone they liked is murdered. The framing of these things is just different is all.

Now, as the "forever GM" of our group (with my creative streak and free time I don't mind), I have a few rules. In regards to murder-hobos, I have one simple rule: if you want to murder-hobo, there will be vengance by law, by blood, or by karma. You kill for no reason and make life hell for the others, and I will do the same for you until your character dies or you quit. The logic? Galactic karma. "The gods" might even "smile on the group" for killing the murder-hobo and returning any stolen loot to balance karma.

5:11 I'm actually playing as Chaotic Evil in a Neutral/Good group. It is possible, if you respect fellow players and the DM. I do dabble in shenanigans from time to time, the goals of my character are completely outta whack and his methods are questionable, but I always make sure that he doesn't escalate too much and we have a deal with the DM that I have very strict boundaries and if I cross them, my dude turns into an NPC and I make a different character. Which I think could be turned someday into a very cool experience for the whole party, that the guy they've been travelling the whole time becomes the BBEG at some point and all the weird stuff he did along the way lead up to that point in some way.
So while I can agree - balancing that isn't at all easy - I do think it's a thing that can work narratively and even lead to satisfying moments that would never be possible, had that one person just made a good guy like the rest.
Again - key parts are respect towards other players and being open to change some stuff if needed.
I also like to add a bit of humor to the character, you know, for flavour. And on top of burning corpses, escalating into violence and all that - my character loves cooking and we made it a thing in the party that he's absolutely terrible as a chef.
And I KNOW FOR A FACT the rest of the party enjoys what I add to the campaign, because we're regularly joking around between sessions about our characters and my one is very often the topic for jokes, silly ideas, suggestions and all that.

The fun of it was pretty quickly ruined by the other characters metagaming their behaviours (after someone looked at my character sheet) to treat my character like a walking bomb that could go axe-happy whenever and for whatever reason - or no reason at all. For me it was all about discerning a method to the madness, giving the character reasonable (to a warped mindset, at least) motivations for their actions. But the story took an upswing after my character, who was some kind of hunter/ranger got a pet dog from the other characters as a present. Sure, it kept derailing scenes by being more psychotic and unpredictable than my character, often biting the hand that fed him - no matter if it was mine or any other’s. Sure, my character had some dark moments ending in alleyways full of corpses of defenseless people, too, but that almost felt foisted on me. My character was smart enough to not commit atrocities in full view, and more had a mean streak combined with a really bad temper, but also a connoisseur’s palate for revenge served ice cold. And patience enough to know when the Reaper could be coaxed to come collect his due. Unfortunately, I don’t think we got to finish that campaign.

I grant lone evil guy in group of good/neutral is not a great plan, that he wanted to wade into violence (see 90% of all players regardless of alignment) and treat monsters as resource drops (again 90% of players) is how the game is played in most cases. OP choosing to withdraw makes sense but nothing in the core of the story is "horror" or bad. it just different levels of development in the players. point of note the only one raising moralistic issues in the post is just the OP the rest of the party as they describe was perfectly ok with the kill em all route and the less than humane treatment of monster bodies. what you have here is a player who has a differing view and not being interested in running with those removed from that view. its fine that party was clearly a poor fit but nothing in that group again outside of the side comments mentioned at the end, and give the feel of the story it would not surprise me if said side comments never happened. if they did I'd not be surprised either as the portrayal of edgy is not outside the type either.

So some comments on the story
1: Seems like the other party members didn't really give a shit and was along for the ride with I assume some roleplay. Either way they were all pretty neutral which to me is obvious that the characters and players are pretty passive cause well they're neutrals. The artificer was also on board to kill the centaur while the ranger wasn't.
2: Because of the footprints and the like with the Farrier woman not informing the party the raven folk was working for her means it was a thief along with the loud "We'l kill them for you" from the edgelord means the lady didn't care and wanted her tools back.
3: The DM must've made it a combat encounter cause why elsee roll for initiative? Tip to those who want faster games if the enemies are in a clearing and what not you can ask for a passive perception check and ask for a better description of the enemies. Obviously, they weren't hostile at the moment cause they thought they were safe.
4: DM should give descriptions of characters always cool to design your npcs.Make them hot, make them gross hell I did a description of a cyborg version of Madame Gasket from the Robots movie and had a PC like it before I revealed who it was based on, its a lot of fun. I personally don't care if a PC hits on a female npc cause you know fiction and you shouldn't give a shit.

Stuff like this is why I tend recommend pathfinder society to people who are interested in playing ttrpgs. It’s VERY welcoming and helpful in my area and it means that this nonsense doesn’t happen. Plus it also opens doors for them to join other games.
Also that DM is just using a cop out to avoid dealing with a problem player.

The thing that sucks about chaotic evil, is that people forget that chaotic evil doesn't mean "completely emotionless psychopath" and even then like... CE characters and psychopaths can create incredibly durable bonds. If you are playing a CE character, they STILL NEED TO BE A PART OF THE PARTY. No excuses, its even more important when evil. Evil may mean selfish, shortsighted, sadistic, etc, but NO ALIGNMENT works if you are a loner.

I will say, none of the other players seemed to mind. It was only op that really had a problem with it. So I don't think there really was a problem as much as it was not a compatible table for op.

I have a LN monk with a talking CE "familiar" that is actually a very heavily weakened demonic spirit relying on my monk for safety, transportation, and food (my monk is also a cook). What helps make this work is that this Chaotic Evil demonic spirit explicitly has a slight Good bent to them, plus their reliance on the LN monk. Sure, they could go arround causing chaos, but they know that if they did, they risk their host, and thus themself

    "I ban evil allignments"
Pffffff. One of my funniest campaigns was with lawful evil warlock who needed to do human sacrifices to advance to next level (self imposed). We both worshipped the god of death and i was his accomplice (cleric). Our DM simply put the law enforcement on our tails and after four sessions he got caught and executed (i ratted him out for money and lived like a noble for the rest of my life).
Best part was that our group was hired to catch us, but their characters were clueless because we never let any trace behind and actively misled them.
It was both hilarious and glorious, not just for the two of us but for the rest as well. DM even thanked us after the game for spicing things up.
A good DM doesnt limit the player but lets him suffer the consequences of his actions.
Good player with evil allignment doesnt need to be murderhobo that kills everything. He can simply be a selfish prick or use questionable methods to achieve his goal (rape, torture, murder etc...).
I am a DM myself and would never ban anyone from doing anything. Some DMs are just sissies who are afraid to tell the player "Thats impossible" or "Congrats, you just died because of your stupidity".

I once played a lawful evil character in a D&D game with otherwise good-aligned characters, but he was evil simply in the sense that he was serving an evil patron. He wasn't a bully or a murderer, and he actively supported and protected the group and NPCs despite showing little patience for their antics. Heck, he even went out of his way to save a family who were trapped in a house fire, since it reminded him of his past. Sadly, he ended up dying due to an invisible stalker and my consistently bad luck when playing warlocks.
Sayonara, Khalid of Calimshan. It was fun while it lasted.

Regarding Evil characters. I personally love my Evil Character in a good/neutral party in an Innistrad Game. The thing is, he does not act as evil because in that World he'd be pretty much dead if he didn't have a group. Evil characters don't need to be bad for a group. The only time where he acted evilish was when he was alone with a cultist to interrogate. (The interrogation turned into torture, pretty much as soon as questioning got him nowhere)

I have this very specific character I wanna play, she's a daisy domergue-esque thug who used to be a mob bouncer. But I always talk to DMs in regards to making her a part of the plot, because she needs to be integrated in a way where the alternative is death. And even then she needs something like a geas to keep her from cutting and running. And I ALWAYS have a couple of unproblematic, good and neutral characters on the back burner.

I had a character go from chaotic neutral to chaotic evil after the death of another player character. They died and my character made a deal with an evil entity, and became hellbent on vengeance. She did some really awful things that she saw as justified. And I gradually toned her down back toward chaotic neutral over time, with the understanding that her ability to work with the evil entity would fizzle out as she moved away from being evil. But ultimately I found it an interesting arc but not something I wanted as a longterm direction for the character. She had to deal with the consequences of some really horrible things she did out of desire for vengeance. Her relationship with the other PCs was deeply affected.
I generally don't prefer to play evil, because I tend to feel guilty about my fictitious actions. I'd decided to go with the above, while in discussion with the DM over it, as a challenge for myself, and it worked in our game. It definitely doesn't work for every game! I would not recommend it for anyone who is not an experienced player, and also make sure you're in a group where you all have enough trust in each other that there won't be any hard feelings or out of character conflict.

TL:DR. I successfully played a lawful evil character in a LG campaign.
Probably a bit late to post this but I think its a fun character I made and hopefully someone sees this for some inspiration.
My character was heavily played on ying and yang with the kitsune race. The sister was praised and my character was shunned. He basically resented people and didn't trust easily. It worked with the group to suit his purpose and after being cared for by the group he relaxed around them and did not allow anyone to get away with attacking his group. An example is after a fight someone ran away and he chased them down out of sight and took him out. My character was just okay with killing people and doing what he felt needed to be done despite morals. He accepted others didn't feel this way but in chances where he was left to his own devices, he would return with the job done however it needed to be done. really fun to play in a good group. Caused cool rp interactions and some really funny moments.

It isn't even that hard to have a chaotic evil character in a party of good characters, just make them care about their friends so that they can work with the party.
My character, "Just kill the bandit already."
The other party member, "No, let's question him first then bring him to jail."
    My character, "Ok."
Playing chaotic evil characters is fun, I just wish people wouldn't use it to ruin everyone else's time at the table.

That doesn't sound like CE at all.
CE is best described as only caring about themselves and what they want. The Joker is CE. They can work with others but they will stab them in the back once that becomes inconvenient or theu grow bord.
It sounds more like you are playing a NE character.
LE and NE can work with parties. CE can't because it's never about if theu will betray the party, but when will they.

@@scorch2155There's nothing that says a CE character has to be stupid or have a death wish. If they can't solo the entire party, it's still within the alignment of that character to not commit suicide-by-hero by antagonizing their companions that badly.

    I absolutely hate how terrible so many evil characters end in horror stories. Evil doesn’t mean stupid and so long as you play smart it can make a really interesting dynamic. If you go into one with the idea of character growth on all ends it can be really interested. ;-;

Back in the Ice Age (1985), the first full campaign I played in was an Evil campaign. The party was mostly made up of Anti-Paladins, all of whom were charged by their deity that they were forbidden to kill one another, but to do his bidding (killing everyone else, converting people to his faith, furthering his cause, etc). We made it work and it worked well. And in the end, the deity lifted the sanctions on the characters and it was a free-for-all, with the winner becoming essentially a saint in his service. My character was the last one standing and the entire campaign, which lasted around two years, remains my favorite D&D campaign ever. It's what inspired me to become a DM (and the curse of which has been that I've been a Forever DM, with a tiny handful of exceptions, for 35+ years.

One of my dream characters to play is chaotic evil and one of the key personality traits is that they are very extroverted and looking to have a good time and bond with just about anyone who's not a clear enemy.
Where the chaotic evil comes in (alongside the sadistic interests) is how frivolous and two-faced they can be with these bonds. People are entertaining, but that is the only value most of them have, they don't stack very high when it comes to personal interests. The character will either have fun being with you or using you.
