      Do you think sending videos like these to my players to touch on topics before we practice is a good idea? It makes sense to me but I've had mixed responses from a few different people I mentioned the idea to. I assume coaches are already doing this.

    “That’s gunna work now but it’s not gunna work at the next level.” My High School Coach changed my batting stance freshman year and I went from hitting solid liners to ground balls and having to use my speed to get on base. Couldn’t go back to my old stance because I’d get reprimanded and have to run pole to poles. Went to play travel ball, used my original stance and swing and started raking again. Please don’t change the swing unless you’re proven wrong.

      @akaredcrossbow it's because terrible mechanics can produce results at lower levels ,but will create MASSIVE struggles later. Good coaches can see these flaws and correct it early. Small period of struggle will occur but growth will be exponential if proper mechanics are developed. It's literally what the coach is there for. Stop thinking what you are doing is ok even though is absurdly wrong fundamentally.

    The recognized individuality that Matt speaks of is indicative of his knowledge of the art of hitting. One of the cool things of life is that we are all different. Couldn't agree more with the idea of letting the athlete be who they are PROVIDED, certain fundamental things DO take place when they need/have to. Great stuff guy! Thanks for sharing your knowledge. The best thing you said there during the "hit down on the ball" portion was "feel vs. real". That will help a-lot of us articulate what we are teaching.
    Concepts, terminology , and proper vocabulary and how to express them to a child are bigger obstacles than a coaches understanding. I liked Start sooner instead of get your foot down faster, really liked "Feel vs real" a-lot, stay in posture and over the plate or ball are way better than don't fly open. Good job fellas!

    I've been a fan of both you Coach John and Coach Matt because you both use the same basic principles to teach which is straight forward and to the point but in a simple way that is easy to understand for pretty much all levels/ages of players. There are so many coaches here that do the same things you talked about and yes I did them too being "Old School" however the few things I never did was try to make a player change their swings unless there was something in their swing that was causing a problem like Matt said.... and I have never told any player to keep their shoulders closed as it always seemed to cause confusion when I saw/heard other coaches tell their players that. I explained what I saw while I demonstrated what I saw so they could kind of see it then I would have them do it in slo-mo while guiding them in a way so they could feel what they did and the differences between the "bad habit" and a "good one".
    Guys it is awesome to see the collaboration of two of the best coaches on RUclips for this sport getting it done so smoothly!! I've been coaching for 6 years now and the one thing I see others do wrong, is to try to make cookie cutter players. NOT all players are built the same, therefore, should not be coach/taught the same. Highlight their strengths and enhance their weaknesses. As long as you teach a player to be better, you've done your job as a coach. IMO. Keep up the good work gentlemen!

    I completely agree with everything Matt says. It irks me when I hear all these coaches promoting these strict plate disciplines that you guys both describe. It's about rhythm, timing, feel and looseness in the swing. Looseness in the sense that you're not tense and you feel comfortable. I always talk to my son about having the same swing plane as the pitch to keep the bat in the hitting zone as long as possible and generating his power by using his whole body from the ground up while being in control. When you're truly break down hitting it's a lot more simple then many coaches make it out to be. It's common sense.

    • @TheRoadLessChosen
      @TheRoadLessChosen 3 года назад

      Thing is, if you aren’t working with the batters then you have no idea why they are teaching. Like I’ve said in prior comments I hate the term get your foot down early but with the youth that I’ve coached they tend to open up with their stride foot. Like the bat is literally coming through and body opening up as the stride foot moves forward. So get your foot down before the hands trigger is appropriate for lots of youth batters. Now will I always say the whole line no, I’ll give them the get the foot down but in practice they hear it all and go through the mechanics.
      Same thing can be said about the hands being connected or coming down on the ball. I’d NEVER teach that but sometimes that que will get them to level out. So having more info may actually show the coach is competent.

    • @rhull3939
      @rhull3939 3 года назад +1

      @@TheRoadLessChosen I agree with most of that. But I am not a proponent of giving wrong information to a player to correct a flaw. Like swing down on the ball to level out. I'd much rather tell them that they're uppercutting and their swing needs to be a little flatter. That could come back to bite and cause them to chop in the future because it's in their head as a fix. One of my biggest pet peeves that I've seen a dozen times is when a pitcher is missing somewhere consistently, let's say outside, and then the coach tells the CATCHER to set up way inside. The pitcher needs to make that adjustment, not the stinking catcher.

    When I was younger I was never doubtful of my batting skills and always made it on base literally every time up to bat no joke .......but......then my dad and coaches told me all these diff things and I was so focused on my form that as I got older and older & also as my confidence dissipated, less and less I got a hit or on base to the point that batting became awkward and uncomfortable and hyperfocused on doing my swing properly instead of just feeling natural and keeping my eye on the ball. Honestly I have always just encouraged my son to feel whats natural and watch the pitchers style more or less so my son can readjust in the box for timing instead of changing his natural feelto just eye on ball and swing away u kno.....dnt mess with natural talent it will mess wit ya indefinitely!!!!!

      Maybe its that your mechanics where good enough to get by for 40mph but they weren't good enough to get past 75mph.
      And encouraging somebody to do whats naturally might be encouraging them to do something wrong. Just make sure you encourage the correct mechanics.

    • @ramos208
      @ramos208 2 года назад +2

      Some coaches worry to much about form that do mess with good hitters. If your hitting the ball and constantly getting good at bats why try to change them or confuse them. Now if theirs a player that’s struggling to hit a ball then you help them change there form.

    THANK YOU, THANK YOU, THANK YOU !!! for about a dozen years now, I have been professing those EXACT sentiments about hitting - since I met, and starting studying hitting mechanics taught by Mike Epstein and his son Jake. Matt's statement of "Real vs. feel" is SPOT ON!! What I've learned, and what Matt speaks about - hitting instructors (even Professional players) teach one thing (swinging down to the ball specifically), but do another in actual performance. I've actually gotten into an argument with a local baseball school owner about exactly that. But of course his belittling comment of "who are you? , I've played professionally....who knows better?" really got under my skin. Keep up the GREAT WORK fellas ........

    I think you guys covered a lot of great things in this video. This is from my perspective of coaching primarily 12 and under.
    When I talk about getting the foot down early, i am trying to get the kids to understand that they need to hit from a position of strength and balance. if they start to move too much of their body with a foot still up in the air, they will have difficulty timing and being balanced at the point of attack. Getting that foot down early helps reinforce the concept of hitting off of two feet and driving up against a firm front side. I do agree you can load to early though, and a good coach should be able to differentiate and explain that.
    I teach the boys to keep the hands still purely from a biological perspective. I try to explain to them that their mind is constantly performing the math equations needed to get their hands from start to contact based off what their eyes are seeing. The more variables they introduce into that equation, hand movement being one of them, the harder their mind has to work to accomplish that task. At younger ages, they should be focusing on simplifying the process. I just teach hands high simply because its easier to stay high on heat up in the zone, and bring them down to contact lower in the zone.
    I think swing down is simply meant to relay to the kids that the bat and the ball need to get down from where they start. It should never be taught to swing down through the ball, but to get both the HANDS and the BAT down on plane through contact. Again, a coach should be able to distinguish between those things when teaching.
    As far as keeping the front side closed, when we talk about it, we mean to keep it closed as you launch into the swing phase. it should come open as the bat travels through the zone, but staying closed to me, means staying closed through launch, and opening through contact. I sure hope folks are not teaching kids to swat at the ball like you displayed at the end.
    great work! keep it up. I use a lot of your videos to reinforce what I instruct. Sometimes they think coach is full of shit, so when someone on youtube is backing it up, it tends to carry more weight.

    Great job guys. I think the misconception about the foot down early is which part of the foot we're talking about. What i teach my son is that he can't start his rotation before the heal of his front foot is down on the ground. As long as the heal is down when the ball is half way to home plate, he's going to be on time, i let him decide how to get there (Pujols vs Donaldson). We have to let the kids have their own style, and teach the important aspect of the swing around it.

    Most of this vid is spot on to me.
    The one thing that was never discussed and I think was mentioned is "balance"
    If they're taking a high stride they're generally falling forward and can't control themselves. They don't want to step yet, but they have to because they didn't maintain their balance. So they're foot steps too early and is disconnected from the rest of their motion. So I think that's a key to having success with different types of strides.

    Great points! One thing I constantly teach my boys to help them stay on that axis is to keep their head / chin down on the ball! And make the chin almost tuck and touch the left shoulder and finish with it near or touching the right shoulder and allow the shoulder to push the head/chin as the swing is finishing the pull through! Which is after the bathead has driven through th ball and wrists are then rolling through at the right point of their swing.

    Thanks for the video! Well said about swing path(and everything else!). My Son, never played travel, but was taught in LL by a very good baseball teacher to have a hard, level swing. The core mechanic is pretty much constant. Head on the ball, commit to a level, get in the zone, level thru "the zone". Like you said, any rhythm that doesn't affect that core is just fine. He trains almost daily in overall fitness, not sport specific. Just Strength, Agility, Acceleration, Power, Recovery ever since he said he wanted to try Freshman Football. It has helped him a TON. Our trainer got a bunch of new customers who saw my 6'2" top-heavy, flat footed kid's improvement getting down the base path and extended playing time at TE/DE on the gridiron. I'm excited to see how he does with Baseball at the high school level. Soph year will be a challenge because there is a travel "group" coming to the school (along with their entitled travel parents). He'll have to work harder, which is a good thing. Keep it fun.

    The hitting down on the ball thing always confused me. I’ve always thought I was hitting down on the ball and I was getting good results but I wanted more power so I heard you actually want a slight upswing, so my hands dropped and I hit weak ground balls and pop ups.
    I think for some players it’s really hard to control the barrel, but your hands are controllable. They start high so they have to go down first, and the barrel follows but then you finish high and the barrel starts going up and meets the ball.
    A lot of these tips were confusing and I think if a kid is having success with whatever he’s doing, even if it’s “wrong” then no coach should try to change it

      The one thing I was taught supporting the "swing down" argument was regarding the spin on the ball off of the bat. A swing at an angle downward, provided the timing is correct (out in front of inner-half, behind outer-half) will provide some lift and carry as it will cause the ball to backspin. Conversely, if you are lifting the ball (swinging up), the ball will front spin and fall more quickly to the ground.
      All that said, I was never the greatest hitter, so I'm open to an alternate viewpoint. I just didn't hear a compelling argument to support his claim.

    Really enjoy your content and have used it to correlate to disc golf backhand form, (along with insights from Brent P. And Steve Y.). In the first part of the discussion about foot strike timing, I was surprised it was not explained that the footsteike timing introduces a momentum lag that then creates the whip forward? Center of gravity moving down and forward while bat hand is still moving backward. Would love to hear you go into detail on that. Ted Williams book on batting also talks around it but does not explicitly explain it. Ball golf seems to incorporate discussion of it, though.

    I love that Matt talks about "feel." When you develop a working swing, you can feel it. You can feel the hit and know whether or not it was good. In practice, I try to get to a point where every swing/hit feels good. All good advice here! Getting those things correct will help with consistency and power.

    Great Info! I have trained maybe 300 hitters tops, of those more than 60 were drafted/signed, 7 first rounders. I would have had double those number if not for the destructive coaching at the next level, both college and pro. Most of the time it starts with 7:14 "That's not going to work at this or the next level" and then the coach clones them like all the others on the team. Cannot tell you how many guys I had drafted out of high school for their power and then went unsigned out of college because their power was literally taken away from them by the college hitting coach. The hitting coach is usually an undrafted middle infielder that led the team with a slap .400 average a few years prior and he is going to force every hitter to hit just like he did,. Amateurs teaching amateurs to be amateurs. Even had pro guys fly in at the all-star break completely jack up with a no stride or early stride swing that was forced on them in minor league ball. Keep up the good work guys! Get the word out!

    "Hit down on the ball" is to stop youth players from dropping their hands. It gives them the "feel" of not dropping and lifting. Keeping the bat square through the zone, again, is a different topic.

    Hello Djura, Long time no talk. You are correct in your assessment. I think what Antonelli actually is saying that the hands do not go down late and that happens when we do not use proper body rotation to swing the bat. Pushing and Pulling the bat.. I would think that the idea path would be to go down early with the hands but with connection. It seems that it just happens as a part of our rotation with proper spine angle.
    Have good day, and by the way, I love both of you guys....

    My boys are lucky enough to have the awesome Merv Rettenmund as their hitting coach. Your points are lining right up with what he teaches them. Timing routine doesn't really matter as long as you get to a good load position. Also, getting the foot down just has to happen before firing.

      Right the foot does have to get down before firing but almost every kid that hasn’t had good hitting instruction is opening up and pulling the bat through before their foot even touches the ground. Bat moves with stride. Just crushes them. I hate saying that phrase to my hitters mid game because it’s so cliche but man it is the main issue. They are finally getting it now.

    fantastic video. I have an 8u team, .we teach our boys to hit line drives with some carry. We never teach the swing up in order to get carry. If they can hit line drives with carry to all areas of the field, they will be tough to get out. Also, the keep the shoulder closed is a big one we discuss with our kids. No way you can generate the most speed by keeping the shoulder completely closed. We also make sure for them to feel like their is a pole running through their body and to make sure they swing around it and not change their posture. Fantastic video guys!

    This is so true. My HS coach tried to turn us all in to these downward swing no stride all arm swinging robots. I was never a power hitter but I'd scream line drives to the gaps and get doubles or leg triples all the time in any league other than highschool. Didn't help that I was a pitcher and our state allowed the DH, so guess who did nothing but bunt during batting practice if we even got to pick up a bat during the season at all....

    I used to play with my colleagues to baseball there was some panoramic windows near so we had to manage to avoid a broken window, and I can say what he's saying about directing the bat to the ground to hit the ball it's true and the window of ball impact became quite small and narrow which requires a great sight and reflexes this mean a lot of training

    It’s strange how this applies in most sports I guess. Our local high school had a kicker, who was the biggest draw for the team. He usually put kick-offs through the goal post and commonly hit 60yd field goals. He hit several in practice at 70yds. He got was courted by every major college and went to Tennessee. Their kicking coach changed his “technique” and ruined him. He managed to make the NFL, but was nothing special. He told me that “coaches” who can not do them self, what the kids are doing, demand changes and can ruin special abilities the players may have developed.

    One of my rules when looking at hitters is that if they can keep their eyes level, the swing's probably good, almost regardless what else is happening. If you can swing without your head moving more than an inch or two that means you don't have to whip back and up because your hips didn't open or back and up because your shoulder flew open (it also means you have a steady view of the ball from release to contact).
