8:55 chop it underneath the brown spot. It will grow a new leaf quickly! My dogs tail completely beheaded mine and it kicked it into overdrive - blessing in disguise 🌱
Yay!!! A new video! I'm so glad. Have been bingeing your old ones to fill the void lol. Your voice is so relaxing... Really helps me to wind down, fall asleep and learn things 😂
The way Joli looks at you when you had the camera facing her….🥹 she’s like, is she talking to me? I better listen, she might say something important. She’s so sweet! 🥰 Give her a pat on the head and scratchies! I’ve been giving away some plants in my collection that haven’t been on my radar as of lately. I figure they are really pretty and might bring someone else some joy, so why not. It’ll definitely make my plant chores not feel so labor-like. I am taking a few days off work to get my home in order….its a bit messy at the moment and it’s driving me crazy.
a friendly tip: use one of your old make-up brush, wash it clean and use that for when ever you cleaning/rinsing a plants root in the water. With a brush the damage to the root is much lower than using your fingers.
I know what you mean. Looking after my daughter's sick kitty and my dog with epilepsy, Christmas round the corner and all the plants. no insects, we do not have central heating so it keeps the nasties at bay, Your plants are so lovely. Like them a lot. 🦋🐝
28:20 None of my plants have ever had moss in their poles so I cannot compare. However, all my poles have leca instead and I find it very easy to monitor the amount of dampness/wetness. Also, leca holds water for pretty long time so I don't need to add water/nutri-sol very often. I love it. From what I heard, poles filled with moss are drying out quite fast which means... not for my lazy a** to have around me 😁
@@TheJungleHaven Instead of pouring the water/nutrition from the bottom, I slowly pour it just above the top of the plant, directly onto leca in the pole, to get leca soaked as much as possible all the way from the top of the plant down to the pot. You can very easily tell if leca needs water or not because wet leca is darker than the one that is dry. You can see that from quite far 😁
If you use poles like the kind Claire used(only open on one side) it slows how fast they dehydrate. They also make drippers that only cost a couple dollars that you set on top to keep them hydrated. And if you couldnt afford/find a dripper, you can use a plastic cup with a few small holes to slow feed the pole. You really shouldnt have to water a moss pole more than once a month or so. I think you'd end up watering lecca more simply because you wouldnt be able to drip hydrate the lecca like you can moss.
@@sudonim. My leca poles have plastic backs and sides and I water them only about once a month (some even less frequently) so I am happy with my setup. Also, I am not very big fan of moss, that's why I use leca 😇
Idk if this would work for you but I just have my regular Rhaphidophora on a wood stake. Not a bamboo stake but like a 1" x 1" wood garden stake. It's leaves don't mature per say, but they get a little bigger and the moss pole maintenance isn't part of it
Sometimes if I’m worried for a plant, I like to rehab it in a no drainage cup with perlite, since perlite is very lightweight, I just feel better about roots being able to grow easier when they’re so tiny. I just keep the perlite moist, with a small reservoir at the bottom.
This method works well for me. Also i use perlite this way to place alocasia corms and allow them to sprout and leaf. usually takes 6-8 weeks but it works.
I would love to see a video on how high to put the water level on semi-hydro. I’m so confused about this and I struggle. Probably sounds stupid but that’s where I am.
15:15 it looks like theres a man in the fire lol. Amazing video Claire, such relaxing and feel-good vibes. The rhaphi tetra var is beautiful now! My instinct is always MOSS POLE! but to be fair I need to chill out with that and let things grow off the poles sometimes haha. How are all your alocasias doing? I've lost a few these last couple of months :(
There IS a man in the fire. One of the MPs from Worcestershire decided to immolate himself last week because of the hog epidemic. Well, not so much the epidemic but the lack of compassion shown by the King to the hogs. It may sound funny but it's serious. If you've ever known hogs you'll know how sweet they are. Anyway the poor guy (the MP, not the King) was on the news reels for a few days until the 'haka ceremony' controversy took over the cycle.
Why not try an air-pruning pot with that Green Shield? Maybe the leaf issues are happening from stress due to the roots being bent by the pot, and less because of the actual size of it.
How much are you feeding the green sheild? Alocasias are heavy feeders and often the "two leaf club" is due to them diverting energy from the older leaves to grow a new one. Mine get feed with every watering (using Growth Technology which is designed to be used weekly). My cuprea, which is in LECA with a permanent nutrient solution reservoir, has at least 12 leaves and the new ones are as big as my head. So I'd recommend upping the food and see what happens.
Musa. Place back in a clear drinks cup in pure sphagnum. Cut all leaves in half except the grow point leaf to minimise stress and water loss. Please don’t put it in a cabinet you’ll fail. It’s too hot and really isn’t necessary. Place plant in your sunniest window preferably where there is a grow light in the evening as well to kick start root growth and monitor the root growth through the cup. Do not over water. Musa don’t really work in semi hydro unless you are going to feed every time you top up they grow stronger and thicker and more resilient to pests in a good loam based mix like JI no:1. They are greedy for light and nutrients at all times. If you can tick those boxes they are a breeze. They do not require high temperatures this time of year.
Thank you soooo much for the advice! I've had lots of people tell me that the cabinet is the best place for this plant... I fear outside the cabinet might be too cold for such a young and vulnerable plant
I have been ill. 🤧 Every second week in December every year i always get sick. Strep throat and runny nose and cough. I took the flu vaccine the first time in November still end up getting sick. Think next year i just hibernate in December. Definitely struggling with plants since we have the heating on and not much daylight and good weather is hard on the plants. I already lost 3 plants 😔. Hopefully 2025 you get to travel to Dublin cannot wait to get to meet you and Emma. Usually don’t do New Years Resolutions more about getting life goals. Owning a bigger home. Have a full time job. Getting to know how to drive. Things like that.
Oh I'm so sorry you're unwell. Often I find your body can crash when you're approaching the holidays as it's anticipating some rest time. I do hope you're better for Christmas itself x
You keep on about space. You two getting a new place?! Have my ghetto growing styles inspired you to grow different things, different ways?! (No ego thing, just teasing!)
if your semi hydro pots don't drain, how do you flush them? idk, it's the same as not being able to change the water when you're water propping. I have to use the double pot system or there are just too many eventual problems that can happen... like root rot. Also, most alo's are hungry. What do you use to feed them?
Semi hydro is simply the term given to growing "semi-hydroponically" and not using soil. There are lots of options i.e. Leca, perlite, PON etc etc, but personally the mix I use the most often is the chunky semi-hydro mix from Soil Ninja. It contains lava rock, zeolites, pumice, and helps keep plants super happy!
Hello! Hydroponics is poorly studied here, so I want to ask what the "soil" for plants consists of. I found information on the Internet that you can use expanded clay or foamed clay.
Never have used moss poles ( growing plants all my life) I just let them be or use a few bamboo sticks They do just fine Never even heard of a moss pole until recent Internet stuff! I find them very unattractive and they take away from the beauty of the plant I will say I listened to one "plant person on the net" {not you} ! He said the plant would never thrive if you left it just hang so I did what he said and it died within a few weeks!!! If I buy a plant and its going to get "huge" than I am fine with that I hope it does get huge LOL I prefer large jungle looking plants Your channel is my favorite Love the long chatty videos Perfect for doing plant chores
Please don’t put the musa into semi hydro. In my experience they hate that. I tried several of my musa pups in semi hydro and they did nothing. Literally nothing… no root growth, no new leaves, they just stayed alive 🙈 I have mine in a chunkier mix (pumice and bark added) and in direkt sunlight and they grow like weeds ☺️ Edit: when my musa has a root system so little, I put it into a prop box bc it won’t kill of its leaves then. I even got baby pups without any roots to root in a prop box even tho it is said that you can’t do that 😬
Omg I’ve been refreshing waiting for a new video from you… I’m satisfied now and I haven’t even watched it yet… 😂❤ Ps your hair looks fabulous
Awww thank you!!

Dziękujemy.
You have no idea the way I jumped at this video ❤ these are my favorite types of videos. They play in my bg as I crochet my beanies
Oh another planty video tonight 😍😍 I was so excited that Emma uploaded a video and now one from you too!! Perfect for rehabbing my own plants too 😅😅
Yay! New video! I have withdrawals waiting for new videos! Happy Holidays!
Return of the sock curls! ❤ Love 💕
Woop woop! They've changed my life
Go you! And your eyebrows look STUNNING too ❤
Claire your hair now looks nice, healthy.

Haha she has such an expressive face, doesn't she!? Having a planty clear out from time to time is so healthy!
I have my chiapence on a pole and in no time he was hitting the ceiling, his leaves got so big and beautiful . You will absolutely love it
I am quite excited now...!

I love my wire only poles for Syngonium. The pole needs to be double wrapped for extra support. My albo is on a 10 foot one with no issues.
I know what you mean. Looking after my daughter's sick kitty and my dog with epilepsy, Christmas round the corner and all the plants.

Watching you help midwife that jar giving birth to the syngonium like 😮🌱👶🎉😂

I've never tried a leca pole! How do you ensure it stays hydrated?
@@TheJungleHaven Instead of pouring the water/nutrition from the bottom, I slowly pour it just above the top of the plant, directly onto leca in the pole, to get leca soaked as much as possible all the way from the top of the plant down to the pot. You probably already know this epiprenum pinnatum marble is my new obsession plant. I also feel like it’s gonna be the new “it” plant
Having AuDD, I 💯 relate to needing order to be at my best but at the same time, keeping things in order is extremely difficult
Yes!!!!
Good content as always
Maybe the alocasia longiloba is in dormancy. More humidity could work as well?

2025 I will be buying 3 of my wishlist plants.🎉😊
For a plug from my musa perlite with a tiny reservoir worked pretty well and it had no roots whatsover! I keep my fingers crossed for yours!🤞🌱
Oh that's good to know!
I would love to see a video on how high to put the water level on semi-hydro. I’m so confused about this and I struggle. Probably sounds stupid but that’s where I am.

Great idea!

I would put in moss that had some seaweed and calmag added. Maybe a little B1 as well.
My banana plant came in crap soil like that- stayed too wet. Put it in chunky aroid soil. It's much happier. Regular feedings and silica.

pretty impressive! oh, wait - how big is your head?
@ LOL, well, I’m 5ft 2 in, so not gigantic 🤣
Would pop the musa in a cup of large perlite with a little water. Sphagnum moss also a goer.
Alocasias are always unhappy during the winter season here in SF 😅. Least mine are usually sad now.
Your hair looks beautiful!

@ well. They’re wrong. Claire it’s a plant not a baby.
I agree 100%. Mine hate semi hydro and even my smallest pups (2-3cm) can cope with 17 degrees Celsius als long as they are in a sunny spot 😊

17:50 that's quite an operation 🤭
Do you ever root pruning? instead of go for bigger and bigger pots?
