Did you know this about Draco Malfoy?

  • Read the caption: Did you know this intriguing fact about Draco Malfoy from the Harry Potter series? J.K. Rowling, the acclaimed author, has openly shared her astonishment and unease regarding the character's unexpected popularity among fans. She has often been puzzled by the fact that Draco, despite his flawed and often negative portrayal, has garnered a substantial fan base. Rowling believes that Tom Felton, the talented actor who brought Draco Malfoy to life in the films, has inadvertently influenced fans' perceptions by infusing the character with a certain charm and good looks that were not as explicit in the books.
Rowling has consistently emphasized that Draco Malfoy, as conceived in her books, is not a character deserving of admiration or emulation. Known for his cruelty and bigotry, Draco represented many of the darker aspects of the wizarding world, often targeting Harry Potter, Hermione Granger, and Ron Weasley with his scorn and malice. Rowling feels that Draco's negative traits are often overshadowed by the sympathetic portrayal by Felton, which added an unintended dimension of likability to the character.
In her detailed essay on Pottermore, Rowling delves deeper into Draco's character, highlighting that he was not hiding a heart of gold underneath his sneering and prejudice. She firmly states that Draco and Harry were never destined to be friends, debunking any fan theories about a potential hidden bond or camaraderie between the two. This revelation from Rowling might be surprising to many fans who have developed a fondness for Draco, perhaps seeing him as a misunderstood character rather than the true antagonist he was portrayed as in the books.
So, are you Team Malfoy? This insight into Draco’s character from Rowling herself sheds new light on how we interpret characters and their actions, showing the complexity of writing and character development in the Harry Potter universe. Would you have thought that Rowling had such views about one of her own characters, especially one as prominently known as Draco Malfoy?

Because she was under fans pressure. 4 movies were already out when she had finished the last book. She has admitted that it was a problem because in her (THE AUTHOR of the hp books) imagination draco supposed to be a bad character. And he was. His family was no one to Voldemort after Lucius huge mistakeS. It was better to help Harry and wait until he finish Voldemort off. and Harry saved Draco twice. Draco only one time help Harry.

He’s relatable, and I find his story to be much more realistic, tangible, and *human.* He shows us that even if we make moral mistakes, even if we fuck up big time, we can still change and be good people later on. This, for me at least, is very inspiring.

When did Rowling write this? Malfoy by books 6 & 7 was somethimg akin to a tragic character, suckered into following Voldemort to protect his family, assigned a suicide mission, and forced to follow a person whose goals he no longer aligned with. I think you can see a tale with Draco, raised to be a racist and being told stories of the good days, only to find he really disagreed with the goals when it really mattered. I think there was some pride in Draco becoming a Death Eater at first, but Draco realized over the course of Book 6 that the entire goal was to punish and likely kill him for his father's failures. By the time of Book 7, Draco was no longer following Voldemort out of loyalty, rather more to keep him and his family safe. Again, not a great person but not a villain either.

Draco should have been written to join Harry Ron and Hermione. And each should have been written to be a complement to the four wizard houses of Hogwarts:
    Harry is Griffyndor.
    Hermione is Ravenclaw.
    Ron is Hufflepuff.
    Draco is Slytherin.
Ron should have had some scenes where he uses muggle enhanced items as that would have been cool.
Draco should have had a scene where the friends need to pay for something and he pulls out the Magical Express card. (Don’t leave home without it.) But seriously he should have a redemption arc where he gets to be of help and join them.

She gave Draco a *redemption* arch. She portrayed his family as controlling and emotionally abusive. No one cares if Draco and Harry are friends or not as long as Draco learned from his family's mistakes and went on to be a better person. She herself said that he did not repeat his family's mistakes with their pureblood obsession and even raised his son to be a better man than he was.
Still can't believe that someone who wrote such a great series can be so dense sometimes.

I think it's up to the readers to decide what to make of the character from what she wrote and interpret bits of the story even if she hadn't intended on giving that kind of idea. It's still good to understand her reasoning and intentions, but in the end, it's just a story, and if people want to like Draco (or other 'bad' characters) for one reason or another they can. Whether it's because of his good looks or dramatics, in the end, it's just a character who won't have an impact on real life... (I mean, bullying and bigotry are bad, and I hope no one idealized those bad behavior and made it seem as normal because it's not.)
Personally, Draco is my favorite character, probably because I liked the fanon version of him some potterhead presented to me before I watched the movies. I was really disappointed that he didn’t have a redemption arc! (The way some people talk about him made me believe he had a big redemption. I thought he was going to betray the dark side and join the light side, as in actively help the golden trio and admit the wrongs him ans his family have done... which would've been really interesting and nice.) Despite everything, he's still my favorite character. The Draco loving fanbase porttrayed a false yet very appealing Draco that I'm not ready to leave. I'm delusional, but I know that I am, so no harm done.
Anyway, I really like your video! And I'm sorry that some people give you a hard time sometimes, I've seen some mean comments here and there, and I hope it doesn’t discourage you from making more of these goodies!
Ps: I really love your video about Draco ❤

Draco as a Character had a lot more potential to be something more, other than being just a Punching bag or a Victim of Circumstances. JKR messed up his redemption arc. When Draco was introduced early on in the series, he was set out to be Harry Potter's Rival / foil. The way he was written, it was clear that Draco was meant to rival Harry in Quidditch, Hermione in Academics and Ron, in regards to a family. But from the 3rd Book Onwards, Draco's character was progressively reduced to that of an arrogant Cowardly Bully, who ends up being a pawn or a punching bag in the greater scheme of things.

  • @Splashstar216
    @Splashstar216 3 месяца назад +2

Draco was ALREADY A FAN FAVORITE BEFORE THE MOVIES CAME OUT.
Tom Felton had nothing to do with it. I myself didn't like Draco in the films until I read the books. Draco’s wand is unicorn core, which means that CANONICALLY deep down he's a good person. Draco’s wand was also Hawthorne which is for wizards who have inner turmoil but he obviously in the end chose the light side (unicorn core). In the books he was about to go all the way to the Light during the standoff w Dumbledore before Snape suddenly came out of nowhere and killed Dumbledore.
JKR contradicts herself quite a bit w her assessment of Draco’s character. Comparing Draco with James (Harry’s dad) who JKR puts on a pedestal: James actually hurt the kids he bullied as opposed to Draco who was usu all talk, and James planned an outright murder of another innocent student (one of his victims of bullying…), something Draco would never do. Sure there were accidental non-fatal casualties but those were ACCIDENTAL.
Like James became a nice guy only between the ages of 17-his death at 21. Draco became a nice guy saving Harry’s life on mult occasions by 17 as well- then Draco went on to do good work pro-bono because he was so rich he didnt require payment. Not to mention Draco stops Voldemort again at age 39 with Harry & co.
Oh, and side note: in HPCC (which jkr confirmed as canon), Draco and Harry become actual friends. Once again, contradicting her previous statement of how they could never be friends.
James never once showed remorse, unlike Draco. Instead Draco has been consistently shown to be very anti-violence. Notice in the books Draco is just all talk. Anytime he actually has to hurt anyone, he is VERY affected by it (in books, he couldn’t even kill a hostage they had at Malfoy Manor so Bellatrix had to do it).. and like how Dobby ended up getting harry hospitalized in an effort to send him home in CoS due to Voldemort threat, Draco was trying to do the same thing on the train ride at beginning of HBP. He was trying to get Harry to go back home bc he knew that was the yr he'd let in death eaters. So that's why he threw the cloak over Harry and told him “I don’t reckon they’ll find you till the train’s back in London. See you around, Potter … or not.”
Harry even commented on the way James treated Snape and said that he couldn't imagine any of the twins doing that to anyone (nor Draco). His dad did way worse bullying than Draco & his friends ever did. The only difference was that Draco’s family happened to be Death Eaters (like, the adult Draco would NEVER have joined ranks, as we see him adult at 39 yo in HPCC fighting against Voldemort). So why are we blaming him for the sins of his dad?
And in the books, underage 16 year old Draco’s reasoning was “I have to kill you or he'll kill my family” vs movies: “I have to kill you.. Or he’ll kill me.” HUGE difference.
He was literally a CHILD when he was given the impossible task of murdering Dumbledore and yet, even at the threat of death for his family and himself, he couldn’t do it. Not because he was a coward. He literally had Dumbledore at his mercy and he had no idea Harry was there (in the books, he was glued to the wall by Dumbledore’s magic). But because Draco was too GOOD to kill. Draco never once kills ANYONE despite living through the second Wizarding War as one of its key players. Don’t confuse goodness with cowardice.
So yeah, JKR just had this irrational hate for Draco, whilst simultaneously writing him with a complex backstory and good morals (deep down). She could’ve written him out like Fenrir Greyback or even Bellatrix, but she chose not to. And it’s her own fault for writing out Draco as this intelligent, skinny blonde bloke with “sunlight gleaming on his white-blond head” and “glittery grey eyes” and flirty “smirks” that make Harry immediately uneasy especially when Draco catches Harry staring, and oh god, Draco’s eyes tho, that Harry comments on incessantly in the books lol……………….. (yes the words in quotation marks is the wording harry uses… oh, and we dont even learn Ron’s eye color til the last book when it’s mentioned one time, same with Ginny’s eyes :V but harry’s been talking about draco’s eyes multiple times PER BOOK. like yes Harry, we get it. Draco has nice eyes XD telling us once is quite enough!!!! 😂)
But yeah, i did not like draco until i read the books, because suddenly, instead of seeing Draco the way the rest of the world sees him without Harry's inner monologue (the world sees him as a pompous arrogant snot-nosed cowardly bully- which was why i didnt like him), i now saw Draco through Harry’s eyes, and now I see that Draco is HOT (Harry literally almost gets hit by a bludger during Quidditch because he couldn’t stop staring at the other boy & harry stares at Draco ALL THE TIME even while draco is just eating his lunches all the way across the Great Hall (in the books, their tables are at opposite ends….)… well, they both stare at each other. Like how Harry noticed that Draco noticed that he only got mail from Hagrid over break even though Draco didnt mention it likE WTF)....
I suddenly felt sympathy for Draco that i didnt feel during the movies because Harry felt SO BAD and was soooooo worried about Draco, throwing Snape under the bus whilst not mentioning Draco’s involvement at all w Dumbledore’s death. :V And during the sectumsempra scene, in the books Harry threw himself on the ground by Draco’s body and was so distraught talking to himself so much that in his own thoughts, he said he did not even know what he was saying. After that, he completely backed off from going after Draco bc he’d almost killed Draco, even tho yes, now he for sure knew Draco was planning something. Planning what? He didn’t know. But hell if he would keep getting involved. (He literally stalked Draco all school year and backed off NOW that he had concrete proof at last?!)
And ofc he then immediately asks out Ginny as a trauma response, whom he literally never even thought about near the level of Draco (she honestly read like just a small crush in the books- i was expecting more tbh, at least near the levels of his crush on Cho). There’s a reason there’s a theory she used a love potion on him. His “infatuation” with her came literally out of the blue, and even then, he preferred to stalk Draco w zero hard evidence lol. It was pretty clear that JKR only made Ginny x Harry a thing to keep the Trio together….. In the first year that Ginny was finally on the team, "Harry, however, had never been less interested in Quidditch; he was rapidly becoming obsessed with Draco Malfoy." ~literal book quote -______-; Really. Okkk. JKR only has her damn self to blame.
I went into the books honestly hating Draco. I was one of those ppl who thought that Draco fangirls only liked him becos they thought he was hot (i didnt think he was hot at all- no offense Tom). But then after finishing all 7 books, i came out loving Draco becos Harry does. :’C And ppl STILL hate on me for liking Draco lol. Welp. All i can say is, HE WAS A FAN FAVORITE BEFORE THE MOVIES CAME OUT. AND NOW I KNOW WHY.

Draco was born into a toxic family. Bigotry and hate is taught. And he was raised to believe this way of thinking was accurate.
It’s not his fault, and as he grew up he made his own opinion of this way thinking and believed it was wrong.
He changed his views that was heavily influenced and pushed on him, and chose to no longer treat people is such a manor.

Draco didn't chose to be born in the Malfoy family but he did choose to lie to Bellatrix and his father despite knowing that it was Harry in the fight at Malfoy manor. He may not be purely good but everyone has a good and dark side into them and Draco's darkness was influenced by the family in which he was born. Just like Duddley, Draco wasn't evil by nature, it was the circumstances that made him the bully, we ended up hating so much.

i do think that most people like him for his looks and things like that and they comment “he deserved way better” or “he had no choice” but honestly if they read the books they would notice that JK wanted him to be evil, in the 1-5 books he dreamed of being a death eater! it was his goal, but then the last few books he kind of regretted his decision which is understandable, but he did have a choice and he chose wrong and that was his plot of the story, i do think there was a little hope left for him but she decided not to continue with that👎🏻

The entire Harry Potter saga would've made a lot more sense if:-
    1. Instead of a Golden Trio, there was a Hogwarts Quartet with Draco Malfoy (a Slytherin) being a part of it. In the final Battle, Draco actively fights Voldemort and later on plays a key role in rounding up death eaters. He also marries Hermione, thereby signifying the complete destruction of Voldemort's ideology.
    2. Draco Malfoys begins questioning his beliefs from his 3rd year onwards, after getting punched by Hermione Granger and towards the end of his 6th year, Draco completely sides with the Order.
    3. Draco was set up to be Voldemort's eventual (True) Successor. In the end both Draco and Harry team up to Destroy Voldemort.

Which is why I kinda like the movies better, bcs they add depth to malfoy! In the books malfoy is a stereotypical daddy’s boy who is absolute trash and just a plain old bully. However, there is always a reason someone becomes a bully, and even if that reason is bad, it’s still important. In the movies, Draco is seen as someone who was bad, yes, but most of the time because he didn’t really know any better. His dad sucked, and while his mother was way better, I think the family still definitely made him into who he was in the earlier movies. However, especially in the last three movies (but majorly the half blood prince) we see malfoy has changed. He realizes that what he has been dragged into is wrong, and the weight of that pushes him to the breaking point. Right before the super dramatic ending of Voldemort, all of the students have come out, and Draco with them. When he is called to join the death eaters, you can see in his face he no longer believes in what he has been taught his entire life. The problem is, it’s too late. The only reason he walks over to that side is because no one knows to want him on the good side, and because of his respect for his mother. Watching Draco go from a stuck up boy to a broken man realizing he made all the wrong choices that no longer feel right is what makes me love the movies so much

I could never really get into the books -- I was older so figured that's why, but heck I was the same age reading Hunger Games and other YA books, and enjoyed them -- she just did not seem to create very deep characters. They were all so one dimensional. The world building is what she was good at. Draco could've had an amazing redemptive arc if she really dug into what it would REALLY be like for a child forced to do evil things when he is not evil himself.

Draco is basically a good person but is forced by his father to follow the wrong way.He regrets it and that’s why he changes his beliefs after the 19 years later scene

Honestly I have never read the books,(attempted many times though) but and I think one large part is that for me there was always a disconnect between the Characters and what Rowling wanted them to be. I just ended up hating characters I was supposed to like (Harry, James, Dumbledore, Sirius) and likeing/routing for charakters I was supposed to hate (Draco, Snape, Lucius). It's hard route against a character because of his bigotry when the main character is a dick to him simply because to people tell him that the faction witch he belongs to has a higher risk of being not solely consistent of white knights in shining armor.

it’s just sad that the author herself never portrayed slytherin characters as good people. did she forget that their biggest trait are ambition and loyalty? they are loyal to the one they care, and it was shown. without narcissa’s love for draco, harry would have died. also, at the end, the malfoys didn’t fight, they just wanted to be with each other. because family is very important to them. it’s really sad that the author herself creates these stereotypes
