Great video! Thanks for the explanation and then showing where to perform the "surgery" ;). Just a quick question though, as I'm in Canada. If I understand correctly, cutting the wire and moving the jumper will increase output on channels 1-40 and SSB? Thanks and take care!
Just to clarify...this is the EU model of the McKinley. The McKinley USA is a different animal for North America only, that looks the same, but is not. There's no comparison, and this video covers only the McKinley EU. I have both. The USA model is a great 40 channel radio for US and Canada 'CB' only. It is not modifiable for anything other than unlocking the clarifier, which requires realignment of the radio. I do not recommend doing it. (Ya just can't find good techs anymore). The frequency range of the USA model cannot be extended or expanded. It is one of the best North American AM/SSB 'CB' radios available today. The EU model however, is like a mini President Lincoln, IMO. Awesome EU AM/FM/SSB transceiver right outta the box, for the EU... but for North America it's a mini beast when expanded. More like the Lincoln's little brother than the McKinley USA's paternal twin. Watch "Mike'sRadioRepair" on RUclips for good information on the McKinley USA.
@Delta Xray 444 is there an export mode for the new President Washington? I heard they have left the wire cutting and moving over the Jumper and instaead of that the New President Washington is all menu driven. SO to make the President Washington in export mode you have to do a keypress Ninja movement just like the CRT SS 9900! Is this true Delta Xray 444??? Thanks for any reply !
@MAGNETAR-187 im sure it will have export mode at some point.. most new radios now are either jumper or snip a wire or both and menu driven. like everybody else all those that have an early version I've not seen any information yet as to how it is done.. I still think it will be a bad seller with having a few watts more than the George 2 that nobody will see the difference over distance on ssb that anyone will see on a meter/receive and a few more options.. what they should have done at least is change the design there won't be many people that bought a George 2 will buy this radio.. the original Washington was an iconic radio and also an homebase.. to slap the name Washington on the new radio and it being the same design as the George 2 does a dis-service to such a great old radio.. for the life of me I cannot understand why this radio was even made in the vein of the original Washington homebase.
Hey Kirsty xx, i will be uploading more and diversifying the content, i just need to get to grips with where i need to be with it being a new channel xx
Sorry forgot to mention my thoughts on the Span Mode. If you can go from 0.1-1000 in 6 seconds then I think you are in the DeLorean from Back to the Future. You'd leave me and ma Prelude fur dead !😏😏
Great video. I just got an EU version of this radio and cut the cable and moved the jumper. Now I have all modes available and can finally access the UK menu, but I've lost the EU one. Any suggestions?
Once the radio is put in export mode you can use it in vfo mode on the channel select and it will give you every channel possible from top to bottom of the entire frequency coverage, for quicker access to bands just put the radio on the correct band A b c ect and also using the underscore icon to flow through the channels..
This is a mobile radio which can be set up for homebase where you would need a power supply running at 13.8 volts, or around the same voltage for out in the field use with a battery.. I'm not sure i understand fully your question but hope my answer is ok.. if you can be more specific of the requirements you need to run the radio please comment.. thank you.
Ahh i understand now.. there are plenty of portable HF cases out there on the market that are aimed at HF/UHF equipment which could easily be applied and configured for use out in the field to fit the McKinley. You would have to look at some ham radio websites and look at the portable cases they sell.. there are a good few out there to purchase simply because hams do POTA (Parks On The Air) and also for many other outdoor radio events.. you could start off looking at the MFJ site and other manufacturers who make carry alls and cases for outdoor use.. Google is also a good place to start looking.

Good afternoon, this modification is for the radio President McKinley CB USA? Thanks you
do you know i havnt got a clue.. ive never tried that.. its an interesting question though.. next time i take the lid off ill see what happens.. i can easily solder the white wire back together and give it a go.
@@nasanction the white wire opens the radio up to more bands and extra options and I think the peg moved over gives more power output. Once both wire and peg are sorted and the rig is in export mode it becomes a very good radio with great frequency coverage.
Hi.. personally i wouldn't use a telescopic antenna for use on this radio, i would use a proper antenna which can cover the bands such as a half wave or 5/8th wave designed to cover the bandwidth this radio covers.. there are large telescopic antennas on the market that pull out to around 15 feet in length, but these are used mainly for home made antenna's but are not really designed for ssb use, hope that helps.
They are an excellent radio.. and i agree a little more power with an amp will always help especially on those long distance contacts over ground wave and propagation.
Yes it will . The USA version is slightly different from the USA model, I would suggest doing some research online and look at some videos where others have wide banded the American version, I'm almost sure you get all the added extras and frequencies.. on the USA version you have weather button we don't have that on the European model. There are some other slight differences too but I'm not familiar enough with the American model.. if possible it would be better to order the European model as its standard issue to have speech processing on our model.. hope this helps you.
I've never tried it I've only ever cut the wire for the extra frequencies and moved the jumper when I've modded the radio's, but you could try not moving the jumper it won't hurt anything, let me know the outcome.. thanks.
Great vide, as this is my first 'modded' radio can you point me in the direction of the President band list you mention in your comment - The band's go in the usual President odd sequence where A is "mid" (EU), B is "HI, C is "low" ect.
Hi Leigh, it is strange how the band's are sequenced on President radios, A is not normally where you would find the mids. All you need to do is swap the mid band where D band is I think, I find it difficult myself and have to keep referring back to the frequency chart.. I'm not sure why President do this, even when widebanded the VCO mode doesn't follow the usual track of frequencies, best bet is to either Google a frequency chart and download or purchase a frequency chart, that's what I did. I'm just glad the UK forty can be accessed easy by holding in the F button instead of using two bands to cover the UK forty.. just to let you know it confuses me too.. it may be better for me to explain it on a video.. ill work on it.. have you had yours modified yet ?
Ah i see what you mean now, sorry it's been a long day..where i mentioned in the description the way the bands run.. i don't know why president run the bands the way they do.. but the A band is the mids and the B band is the Hi band and so on so C band would be low D band super low E super super low and so on.. only in the wide band option.. sorry if im not being clear.. if not explain and I'll probably do a video explaining what and where the bands are allocated.. thanks
I have all iterations of the McKinley. I like the latest export version the best. I've been a ham since 1973 and have had gobs of CB's and export rigs. I just wish the McKinley had CW capability. The only modern export radio with a workable CW circuit is the 29xx series. The other ones suffer buffering and only work with an external keyer. Seems like all manufacturers just copy the same design. Exports usually have a better NB than entry level ham rigs. They do a good jog on uncorrelated noise. I really like this radio, though. It's very nice.
Hi Mark.. can i say the McKinley in my experience of owning many export radios is definitely one of the best performing radio's in my collection, i cannot fault it as an export model.. But i will add that out of the box they are sold as a ten meter radio, but in my opinion are really a cb radio and not an HF set.. although they cover the ten meter band the McKinley only really can be appreciated once it has been widebanded.. thats if you like a cb radio that covers ten, eleven, and twelve meters.. the receive is excellent and the options it has make it an awesome radio.. i do agree with you though that there are many radios out there with very similar functionality, but President do make a good radio at the moment and are certainly worth having over other similar radios.. Yes you would think they would have included CW.. i also own the President Lincoln 2 plus version 3 which does cover CW and with a paddle plugged in does work well on CW.. I cant really split the McKinley or Lincoln on options or performance as they are two excellent radio's.. i hear what others say about these radio's but i like to make my own mind up.. if i listened to most people's views on radio gear id be scratching my head as what to buy.. if a rig work's well for me I'll give it kudos regardless of what others say .. we all have our opinions but like others im not bias or either a Yasue, Kenwood, or Icom guy i have no favourites so if a radio works well i will always give it credit.. i have a fully filtered Yasue dx10 and i wouldn't say it works any better on receive than the McKinley they seem to both work good and as long as i get contacts on both and other stations can hear me thats fine by me.. i think people say a lot about radio gear yet have never owned or used certain equipment yet will call it out because they read something or their mate didn't like it so all of a sudden an opinion is formulated and a radio becomes rubbish because it has a knob in a position they don't like.. The McKinley is an excellent radio and after forty years on the air i can say its one of the best ive used on the bands it covers for what sort of radio it is.. i guess its in that category that's half way between an HF set and a cb radio.. like many other radios sold today. Have a good day and 73
Hi, I got mine President in Canada but moved to Europe. I find out that they don't use same frequencies here. If I do those adjustments, would I be able to use it in Europe?
The version I have here is the EU (European Model) I'm not sure which version you bought in Canada.. If you have the weather function on yours then it is the USA model as the EU model does not have that function, it can still be wide banded but I have no idea what frequencies it will give you. I will add though you can try and see if it works and if it doesn't work it is easy to put it back to how it was originally. Thanks.
@@DeltaXray444 It has Weather option on front panel and only AM mode beside the LSB and SSB. I was hoping it will give me more channels and higher frequencies. I might try your adjustments.
@@dusanstakic2741 if it doesn't work you can always reverse it.. it will not cause any issues with trying as long as you give yourself the option to re connect the wire.. then again I'm not sure if that white wire is in the US version.. If you like this radio keep it as is.. I would recommend getting the EU model it is much superior with options compared to the US model.. Yes please that would be very interesting indeed.. let me know your findings I'd really like to know how you get on with it and if it gives you any extras.. I've not heard of anyone else who has attempted to do the conversion so it will be a first for me.
@@M6MRP Hi Phil, interesting question and to be honest I haven't put the radio on a frequency counter.. but it will go to the next channel, so basically more than 10KC's.. Also the radio works with Span mode so depending how it's set up just by turning the channel selector you can move in 1KC increments on any frequency.. so it will get into all splits.. hope this helps.. but im sorry I couldn't tell you exactly how far the clarifier moves.
@@DeltaXray444 you must be able to get to the 0s if it does more than 10kc try 27.400 just by using the frequency display on the front, I'm looking for a tidy desk radio with a front speaker an dont want to mod it for the 0 in between channels rather leave it stock.
I'm sure the EU model will have the same modification ability they don't usually backtrack. It's the same for most circuit boards or it would get very expensive for the company, if anything we probably get more added functions.
Hi Desmond.. This radio here is the new European President McKinley EU model which has all the new features including seven different screen colour's, take a look in the description under the video for all the statistics.. this radio will cover everything and more for the European and American frequencies.. out of the box it is solely a ten meter radio.. with this simple modification of cutting the wire and moving the peg over it opens it up to everything. The American model has no modification like this one.. Also this radio when the mod is done covers just about every frequency there is across ten eleven and twelve meters and covers just about more frequencies than any other radio on the market .. 24.715 to 30.105 on all bands.
@@desmondsharpe5397 i have added an amendment in my comment above Desmond.. @@fungaga77 yes because you now have it in export mode it will draw more power from the power supply.. be careful and make sure you do not put a big fuse in .. maybe like a ten amp fuse should be ok.. I'm glad you sorted it out.
I'm not 100% sure, I think it's the signal wire which tells the main chip to allow for wide banding/exporting the radio to open the gate to the peg that is moved across to allow extra bands and power.. but please don't quote me on that as I'm no expert technician and not sure, when I purchased the radio I had the seller on the phone to me giving me instructions on how to put the radio into export mode, it should have arrived to me already wide banded so he gave me the instructions on the phone as I did the modification with him.

The USA model with FM will be released in January 2022, FCC finally approved FM band apparently. Just don’t know if I want to wait another month, but I’m sure it’s going to be a 300 dollar radio! 😂
I think this is what it's all about, also i think most people already have FM on their rigs in the USA.. also it depends on what part of the FM frequency is allocated to you.. but at the end of the day it's about selling more radios.. but in the UK we have used FM legally for over forty years now and we find it so much better than AM which is the band in 1981 we all switched over from.. as for dxing FM is very good although the band is a little noisier than AM.. but even on ground wave the distance is pretty good i can work England to Scotland at 300 miles on a good clear night.. I'm sure you will enjoy it whichever rig you decide to buy.
Hi Jeremy.. the UK calling channel in the UK is channel 19 .. which is frequency 27.78125.. Many years ago it was usually channel 19 for mobile use and channel 14 for homebase, although nowadays nobody really follows protocol and most stations talk on 19.. also in the UK there are much fewer stations these days on air so the frequencies can be very clear.. our radio's are nowhere near as busy as American radios, although of late there has been somewhat of a pickup in the hobby.

Hi Rob, thank you for the input, it is much appreciated, stay blessed.
More content please Glenn 😎
Hey Kirsty xx, i will be uploading more and diversifying the content, i just need to get to grips with where i need to be with it being a new channel xx
Sorry forgot to mention my thoughts on the Span Mode. If you can go from 0.1-1000 in 6 seconds then I think you are in the DeLorean from Back to the Future. You'd leave me and ma Prelude fur dead !😏😏
The BTTF DeLorean can only reach a maximum speed of 88mph.. this is to obtain time travel and take Marty McFly on his adventures.. ok.
@@DeltaXray444 Oh I see. That's right. It had to hit 88 at just the right time. I remember that now. Please excuse fuzzy brain !
@@DeltaXray444 thanks!!
which portable case/box is adived for the MC Kinley to inclue battery and antenna?
This is a mobile radio which can be set up for homebase where you would need a power supply running at 13.8 volts, or around the same voltage for out in the field use with a battery.. I'm not sure i understand fully your question but hope my answer is ok.. if you can be more specific of the requirements you need to run the radio please comment.. thank you.
@@DeltaXray444 Thank you. Yes, I was asking about a portable case in which one can enclose/incoporate the radios including the necessary car battery.
Thanks you
This modification is for the EU model McKinley, thanks.
Which LiFePO4 battery (or traditional car battery) is advisable to use with this radio for mobile field use?
I would say any battery around 13.8 volt will be adequate to run the radio.
What does the radio do if you don't cut the white wire but still move the jumper?
do you know i havnt got a clue.. ive never tried that.. its an interesting question though.. next time i take the lid off ill see what happens.. i can easily solder the white wire back together and give it a go.
@@DeltaXray444 I have one coming, but still in transit. I haven't seen anything about what the wire cut actually does, and same with the jumper.
@@nasanction the white wire opens the radio up to more bands and extra options and I think the peg moved over gives more power output.
Once both wire and peg are sorted and the rig is in export mode it becomes a very good radio with great frequency coverage.
Wish there was a source to buy these from here in the u.s.
Can you not order one from a President supplier in the states.
Amazon?
@@zukispur5493Amazon maybe worth a try, thing is the McKinley EU model may break the FCC rules. I don't know.. but i wish you luck 👍🏼
This is where I get all my export radios from. Don’t expect to buy one for $200 like in the USA. I paid $360 with shipping.
@@robschlotterbeck2566hi Rob.. yes they can be very expensive for sure.
Is this the same way you can get a modification/setting to Export on the George 2?
No the George 2 is similar but different in how it is modified.. My George was widebanded for me when I purchased it.
Which telescopic antenna would be advisable to use for SSB?
Hi.. personally i wouldn't use a telescopic antenna for use on this radio, i would use a proper antenna which can cover the bands such as a half wave or 5/8th wave designed to cover the bandwidth this radio covers.. there are large telescopic antennas on the market that pull out to around 15 feet in length, but these are used mainly for home made antenna's but are not really designed for ssb use, hope that helps.
Why has the wire been cut please? Thank you
The white wire is cut to put the radio into export mode and expands the frequency coverage.
@@DeltaXray444 cool. Now I get it. And then it's easy to switch between the normal and export mode after this mod? Think I have gennd it now ta
C`est un excellent CB, cependant il faut lui ajouter de la puissance de sorti avec un ampli.
They are an excellent radio.. and i agree a little more power with an amp will always help especially on those long distance contacts over ground wave and propagation.
Will usa mc kinley from Amazon open up ?
Yes it will . The USA version is slightly different from the USA model, I would suggest doing some research online and look at some videos where others have wide banded the American version, I'm almost sure you get all the added extras and frequencies.. on the USA version you have weather button we don't have that on the European model. There are some other slight differences too but I'm not familiar enough with the American model.. if possible it would be better to order the European model as its standard issue to have speech processing on our model.. hope this helps you.
can you move the jumper only?
I've never tried it I've only ever cut the wire for the extra frequencies and moved the jumper when I've modded the radio's, but you could try not moving the jumper it won't hurt anything, let me know the outcome.. thanks.
Can you use this on 4x4? Is it more expensive? Thank you
I should imagine so, it's just like fitting any other radio.. I'm not sure what you mean by more expensive 🤔
@@DeltaXray444 initial purchase. Sorry I'm really green. Looking at ham and also marine for my kayak on vhs too. Sorry for being a pain
To be honest I cannot for the life of me understand why the USA model didn't have the EU spec.. strange that. Good luck with trying the mod.. it would be interesting to hear your report. Thanks again.
@@DeltaXray444 I haven't had a clue that it won't have same channels there and here. And not FM but only Am. I'll open it and check it. I will let you know what I found.

How far does the KC shift slide will it go to the 0s
@@M6MRP
Hi Phil, interesting question and to be honest I haven't put the radio on a frequency counter.. but it will go to the next channel, so basically more than 10KC's..
Also the radio works with Span mode so depending how it's set up just by turning the channel selector you can move in 1KC increments on any frequency.. so it will get into all splits.. hope this helps.. but im sorry I couldn't tell you exactly how far the clarifier moves.
@@DeltaXray444 you must be able to get to the 0s if it does more than 10kc try 27.400 just by using the frequency display on the front, I'm looking for a tidy desk radio with a front speaker an dont want to mod it for the 0 in between channels rather leave it stock.
will the new Jan 2022 model still have this mod ability ?
I'm sure the EU model will have the same modification ability they don't usually backtrack. It's the same for most circuit boards or it would get very expensive for the company, if anything we probably get more added functions.
I wonder if the USA version has a hack available would be nice to use it on ten meters

Let me say if you do decide to import this model you will not be disappointed, ive been into cb since 1978 and without prejudice to any other radio this McKinley is by far the best radio i have ever used, i cannot fault it in any way, it is an amazing radio.. also it does not feel cheap like some of the China brands, this version is made by President in there Vietnam factory and feels and looks top quality. Hi ,
I've done it...but when i tried to lower the power ( ptt + . ) it went down!! And its not the fuse ... Is it too bad??
You can change the output from the front of the radio, mine goes from 2 watts to around 25.. have you tried re seating the tiny plug on the pins.. maybe they are not sitting properly.. let me know, thanks
Did you catch a power wire somewhere, ive never heard of that happening, the modification will never cut the radio out, let me know how you get on and what caused it to happen.
Fixed. The fuse on the cord was fine but...the 2Amp fuse on the lighter plug burned. Was it expectable?
@@fungaga77 yes because you now have it in export mode it will draw more power from the power supply.. be careful and make sure you do not put a big fuse in .. maybe like a ten amp fuse should be ok.. I'm glad you sorted it out.
Thanks, i've found a 3Amp so it.will go with this one .Do you know how to change RF power?
What is that cut wire?
I'm not 100% sure, I think it's the signal wire which tells the main chip to allow for wide banding/exporting the radio to open the gate to the peg that is moved across to allow extra bands and power.. but please don't quote me on that as I'm no expert technician and not sure, when I purchased the radio I had the seller on the phone to me giving me instructions on how to put the radio into export mode, it should have arrived to me already wide banded so he gave me the instructions on the phone as I did the modification with him.
no mention of the 5 ALPHA CHANNELS or the FM is not good at all......
The radio covers all the alpha's and are marked on the display when in one with an "a" .. the FM on the UK model is exactly as it should be and works extremely well. One of my better export radios and better than most. Thanks
does this work on radios sold in usa???
Unfortunately not, the President McKinley EU model is a much improved model overall than the American model.
can it be converted back to a standard radio
Yes, you just clip the white wire that is cut back together and move the peg back over. Its fully reversible.
Oh my, I like this President McKinley radio. I like the circuit board and pegs and switches and knobs and dials and the lingo of MHZ and Bandwidth Oh 10 Watts with a Whistle - very good. Lets see......Iron Maiden, Led Zeppelin, Billy Ray Cyrus, Journey, Billy Idol, Limp Biskit, and Tears For Fears. OK Carry on.....Well I'm not too sure about decreasing power on the sideband to 2 Watts. I mean WHY ? If ya got it flaunt it. As far as khz steps I can go from, 0.1 to 100 in 6 seconds in my Honda Prelude. It's a little car with a BIG engine you see ?

UK channels, is 14UK considered the FM call?
Is there a separate emergency channel?
Hi Jeremy.. the UK calling channel in the UK is channel 19 .. which is frequency 27.78125..
