Do you think he converted to Islam by force? I’ve always been off the mindset that Jews faired better in Muslim lands but I’m hearing more and more reports of pograms and abuse suffered in traditional Muslim lands. When you dig into it, it is kind of amazing how much the Inquisition had to do with Cryptography and the secure communication of state secrets over long distances (unrelated to crypto-Judaism, but not unrelated to Kabbalah!).

Very interesting indeed. I had the opportunity to visit Belmonte a few years ago, including the museum and the synagogue particularly opened for us. I also visited the synagogue in Porto, being Jewish myself and from Portuguese ancestry but with a very semitic DNA haplogroup in a subgroup connected to the Cohen modal, although not being a Cohen.
