  • When The Eddie goes, everyone goes - as evidenced by the multiple invitees participating with serious injuries. Many people claimed this year was the biggest and cleanest Eddie ever, and we caught some of the chatter on the beach.
Curious about what goes into making a sturdy big-wave steed, we asked John John Florences’s lifelong shaper Jon Pyzel about the theories that led to having multiple big-wave event wins under his planer.

Pyzel's normal shop boards have the widest point too up front (not talking about these big wave guns here). They suit John, Koa etc cos that's the way they surf and the solid waves in Hawaii (and big Indonesia etc) like that long tail curve. In Australia it's hard to get the Pyzels going unless it's big or pumping QLD, Victoria etc (yes I've had many). To Pyzel's credit the glass jobs are superior versus a very sorry lot of competitors. For normal waves, Pyzel should also make boards with the widest point below half way ... and thicker up the tail too. Not everyone weighs between 60 and 85 kilos (bigger guys struggle with these thinner boards).

Agreed! Same here in Europe. Most people can't seem to make pyzels work here for exactly that reason

@@tspps.sb805 Let me spell this out for you, Watson- the OP post makes no fucking sense... that's my point. If the waves are small and weak, a less severe entry rocker and wider mid point should help, not hinder the paddler.

it's called the "Padillac made by Pyzel. Obviously there's not "one" board for Waimea (or any where else), but more than a few riders were on Pyzel's boards

Ooh I got the formula, formula yep that’s how u spell it , all those things that they say about boards but more kick in the tail been riding big waves since 1975 , 10 broken boards, not all wipe outs some trying to get though the face ,the top 4 feet ,are critical oh yea 1 m an half is the critical part your 9 + doesn’t fit in the curve, the next 15 + is the easy part if legs can take the G forces ,more training)board design, big fin , 2 small fin (thrusters) flat board, no fancy stuff ,eg conclaves ect , u might chine a rail if u have to , 70s rail is good to reduce size of rail if u going over 2half to 3 inch ,this helps penetrate the face ,not to corky yea that’s all I got , o more training climbing your leg rope is the best way to conserve energy and air

I don´t understand why didn´t you interview Keith Teboul instead of Jon Pyzel? As your own edit shows he is the one with total new ideas that other people would also like to have. New shape and new materials, left us completly clueless what it´s all about. Very poor journalism.
