This album has a level of dark cynicism that differentiates it from the Steely Dan catalog at large (in my opinion, maybe it's nostalgia for my dad), but that actually elevates it for me. Down in the Bottom and Hard up Case are my two favorites.

Girlfriend crushes on 11 Tracks of Whack. Hard Up Case = DAT BASS. Cringemaker is another excellent track. Hat Too Flat is really interesting. The second Walter album Circus Money has tracks: Downtown Canon, Paging Audrey, Selfish Gene, God's Eye View, Three Picture Deal that are very, very Steely.

Some of Becker’s solo stuff takes a couple listens to feel, but once you get it you understand his impact on Steely Dan. He brought the darkness, off-kilter lyrics, groovy bass, and was arguably a bit more willing to take chances.

Guys…I’m not sure you’d be interested in, but Shane McGowan of the Pogues died last week…if you’ve never heard any Pogues music you definitely should…and it’d be a perfect opportunity to react to “Fairytale of New York”, as it’s both the best Christmas song ever written and the most anti-Christmas song ever…that wouldn’t make sense unless you heard it…anyone else second me on this?

I have always loved this CD. Definitely a Hawaii vibe from Becker’s days living in Paia, Maui. If you want to go even deeper into the vaults of Steely Dan, check out a gem called Sun Mountain. It’s a CD of very early Steely Dan demos going all the way back to their days at Bard. Not sure if much of it is on RUclips.

Yeah, you'll enjoy the live version as well with the full Steely Dan orchestra, stillchill and haunting. I saw this performed live in Irvine CA on the '94 tour. Sends shivers up your spine. Donald's solo work generally tends to be brighter and more playful, Walter's a bit darker, sparse and moody. Thanks again gents, you're excellent.

"Did they keep that same sound on both of their solo records".....This song sounds like SD but the rest do not. Becker deliberately chose not to keep that same sound but it also has to do with being a guitarist vs playing keys and that informs some of the musical choices they make.
Its worth noting that Becker produced and played on Fagen's solo record from this same year, Kamakariad.

    • @paulweber686

I agree with you but the things that make this album "different" are my favorite aspects of it. It's like a cold splash of nihilism in an otherwise (mostly) warm catalog. Just IMO as well. Cheers.

I believe Walter felt that with 11 whacks he didn't want to spend all the time and agonising that had gone into the SD recordings so this album has the immediacy and impact of a demo. That said they are still pretty polished tracks, maybe the drum machine makes the comparison with the full blown SD sound difficult at first but 11 tracks of whack has some great grooves none the less e.g. "Hard up Case" and even more so "Cringemaker" fr'instance.
