Thank you so much I have seen other videos that they drag it out and it seems they are more interested in showing you how much they know,,, about the tools... worked like a charm.
Thank you so much for these great tips! I create/modify extremely large reports for work in excel, and you have saved me an incredible amount of time! You are a lifesaver!!!!!
Thank you Chris, you just solved my biggest headache and are a lifesaver. I couldn't figure out how to fix it until I watched this video, my file size was 32.0m and it was a few kinds of stuff that I formatted, I was shocked when I saw my file size was that heavy. After following your instructions (simple and quick fix), my file size now is 64.6KB and that's the size should be. Thanks for sharing and the time to upload this video.
Hiya Chris! Thank you much for this video! I was in a bit of a panic because my spreadsheet increased to 43MB. I knew the max size is 50MB - this is a spreadsheet that I maintain all year, and we were only 5 months into the year. I was close to maxing the file out! Thanks to your tips, the size went from 43MB to 18MB. One of the worksheets had the end of data row at 1 million+!! I deleted those rows, and BAM! :) I owe you a beer! 🍺
Thank you ❤ This tip massively reduced my spreadsheet size . I initially thought the pivot tables might be causing this issue , it was actually the hidden data in the empty cells
Thank you very much for detailed explanation. You have really made it simple. I have seen other vedios but not got proper solution. I have implemented the idea, you have explained in this vedeo, and experienced miracle.I am sure this will help many users to save time and space.
When you have this situation You will also notice that the vertical scroll bar is much smaller than it should be. And as long as you are using keyboard shortcuts to select you could use them to delete. Ctrl- deletes selected rows or columns.
Wow Chris, thank you so much for helping me to solve my problem. Coincidently my big files have 20 MG so I felt you were talking to me. Hehe. God bless you, my friend. My name is Harold Astor from Puerto Rico. Thank you 😊
I have a spreadsheet with several tabs, cells with data, NO formulas, and not much formatting other than sorting. The file was over 24,000 KB. Thanks to deleting these excess empty rows, it is now down to 151 KB. Thank you!
Thanks for this beautiful tip. I used to filter the same but with little difference, when I am beyond Cell A8983 (from your example), like it is AA11000, I will select all the cells from A8984 to AA11000 and count them as they make 2017R x 27C and I go to GO-SPECIAL and choose Blanks. Now they make 2017x27=54,459. When I write something like "-" and press Ctrl Enter, this gives me the same figure 54,459, so it is OK to delete as you proceeded to, else, if the figure is less than 54,459 then I undo and check why I am going to AA11000 on pressing Ctrl End? Then repeat the same process by selecting all the cells from M1 (from your example) to AA11000. Thanks
It's pretty self explanatory. Just like you said, takes time even with a pretty fast computer. Had this issue on a computer not too long ago and this way was not a solution because i got error pretty much because to do all that it would need more resources. And the computer used is not that bad cpu wise but pretty low ram wise. So my fastest solution was to just copy the data in a new sheet and delete the old one. I'm more interested if there is a way to lock the size of newly created excel files as a policy to basically not allow sheets to contain more rows than a set value. From what i seen until now it's not really an option in the way i want it to be, which kind of sucks.
How do i reduce the size of an excel screen shot to only occupy 50% of my laptop screen, the reason is i need to have other system report occupy the 50% of my laptop, i need to look and work on both reports. I am paralyzed only have LEFT hand and no mouse to work on. Thanks for any advice you can advise
The rows and columns on my Dell delete in 1 to 4 seconds at the most. I have an i7 processor, 6th generation with 32GB of RAM. The computer is 4 years old. I don't have a Mac, but it should work on a Mac. It is the Excel file that is causing the issue, not the OS. I hope this helps. Thanks, David.
Hello, I am trying to hide all unnecessary files and my files get to 7mbs. Is there any way to reduce it to KBS size while still being able to hide a million rows and the rest of the columns? Much appreciated
Hi Chris, great video. For some reason this is not working on my spreadsheets. It used to, but now I get no change =( and after hitting Ctrl + End still get back to same cell and column AI 48461 (when my data is only up to AI 78). Any idea on what to do?
I was thinking the same thing. I have a Microsoft form that collects info into a shared online workbook. Is this safe without breaking the connection to the form?
You probably didn't delete the rows and just deleted the content from the cells. Just watch if the size of the scroll bar changes, if you do it right that should get bigger.
This free tool on the Microsoft Store is well worth looking at. Especially when you have an excel file that you have been adding to over the years. It is holding all kinds of old styles inside that file that is using up space. I have used this tool safely on massive Excel files that kept crashing. Get XLStylesTool - Microsoft Store
Years of my life have been wasted not knowing this!!! Thank you so much!!!

I did what you say in the video but the file didn't get compressed
You are AWESOME! Thank you for this!!!
Happy to help! Thanks, Monica.
Thank you Sir! You are a life saver. Apparently deleting rows doesn't always result in deleting rows. Saved me 45 MB out of 50 MB.
That is a significant difference. Thanks, Sariah.

And how do I regain back the size? Like the columns and rows
How long would it take for the rows and columns
to delete and would this work for Mac?

What's the way to reduce unnecessary Rows and Columns for EXCEL IN ONEDRIVE
Hi Chris, great video. For some reason this is not working on my spreadsheets. It used to, but now I get no change =( and after hitting Ctrl + End still get back to same cell and column AI 48461 (when my data is only up to AI 78). Any idea on what to do?
Chris - great video, thank you for sharing! Do these techniques work on Excel files in the cloud / on your browser? Or just for files on your desktop?
I was thinking the same thing. I have a Microsoft form that collects info into a shared online workbook. Is this safe without breaking the connection to the form?
THANK YOU SO MUCH I know I am typing in all caps. I just worked on a spreadsheet and my email said it was too large.
Glad it helped!
I have more than 10k unnecessary column & had tried to delete but there’s no changes 😩. I’m so stressed
I am struggling, the file size is not changing.
Nice vedio
Thank you!
I looked online multiple times with no solution. You helped me take care of my issue in 10 min. Thanks!
This does not work for me, I dont know why the file size still the same. Help
You probably didn't delete the rows and just deleted the content from the cells. Just watch if the size of the scroll bar changes, if you do it right that should get bigger.
Delete or hide?
delete would reduce the file size. Hide would not reduce it.
mine didn't work... ugh
I've a spreadsheet with 220mb on it spanning 3 years of data, I'll comment back with how this impacts the file size
if this method doesn't work, you just create a new sheet and move the date to the new sheet. and that will do the job as well.
it did not work for me
TVERY THAKS I WAS A FILE WITH MORE THAN 100 MB I REDUCED TO 90 kb
That is awesome. I'm glad it worked.
From googlesheets to excel this is a headache
