- In this video, I go over the two different overdrive sections for this transmission, they cannot be interchanged, if they are the transmission will not shift correctly on the 2-3 shift. The ratios are so close that it will not set a code either. Off to the shop, super busy and short handed. Hope you enjoy, put this together last minute.
Thank you Gary, as a retired mechanic I love the shop talk.
Thanks for watching Dave
Excellent tip and explanation as to why we should be aware. Such valuable information! Thanks so much for taking the time to share all of this.
another good tip Gary
Thanks Gary
Rebuilt ford transmissions for years. Was replacing the cases for the servo pin bore before the reamer kit and sleeves cane out (I know that dates me).
The OD section would also shred itself up intermittently due to the oil passage in the coast clutch hub plugging up and not feeding.
Of course the flow control valve was always a problem and I swear Ford used recycled tinfoil for bushings.
Once they were fixed up they weren’t a bad box.
Yes, now I see broken bands more than anything
I'm repairing a 5R55S out of my 05 mustang coupe, it had lost OD and reverse for to a broken sprag, replaced the OD planet, etc. First time working on a tranny, was kind of intimidating at first but once I got the pump pulled out really wasn't all that bad lol love working on my own cars when I can ,. Thanks for the videos
Thanks for sharing Linda. Good Job!!
Always good information!
Thank you
Great tip on ordering the washer! If you get an A750E/F in the shop I'd love to see that! Also any tips on preventative or corrective measures to make the A750F last would be great!
Sorry for late response, not much you can do on that other than filter and fluid, They are pretty good units, I don't really get many of those
@@GaryFerraro no worries, glad to hear they generally hold up. Thanks for the reply and the great videos Gary!
Friend was excellent your video. I am about to fix the transmission of Explorer 2002 myself, I would like to know if you dare to record a complete video well explicit of the assembly of a transition with its new components? I would like you to advise me on which kit to buy. Thank you.
thanks, awesome video..
Would you please tell me which overdrive planetary fits my 2006 explorer, the V6 4.0 L?
That should be the one that takes a 38T sun gear or late planet
What will cause a low speedometer reading in the 5r55. And incorrect 5th gear ratio
No, may give a flared shift on 2-3 and no codes, ratio is very close
good night, excellent your videos. I have a question about the difference between the 5r55e, 5r55S, and 5r55w, please
5R55S and 5R55W basically are the same unit. 5R55E is on a smaller scale, you find this in small pick-up trucks like a Ford Ranger
@@GaryFerraro excellent, I ask because there is a transmission that has a mustang 4.0 2008 and my client wants to buy it to place it in his ford explorer 4.0 2006, I see them the same on the outside it has the same sensors, but
the muatang one is 4x2 and the ford explorer 4x4, can it be conditioned for the explorer?
Thanks Gary. Murphy's law applies again.
TakeCare, enjoy the Holidays!

Gary off subject what would cause direct drum failure after rebuild on 4l80 and nothing else bad , seals , pistons every in great shape. Idk at a loss thanks in advance
OK, so the direct clutches burned out? How long did this take after the overhaul?
Garry, I’ve just rebuilt a 5r55w explorer 4.0 2007, but no shift from 2nd to 3rd. Checked servo, and band, changed solenoids pack but still same problem. Just realized (after seen this video) that the sim gear that AC sent to me is a 24 tooth. Can this be the cause of no shifting from 2nd to 3rd? Thanks for your help.
No, that would just make it flare on the shift. What was original problem? When you say AC is that Automatic Choice?
@@GaryFerraro transmission was sent to me for repair from another repair shop. When I tear down the transmission I found od planetary broken, and frictions discs burned. I have rebuilt with new friction discs, overhaul kit, servos, solenoid pack. Here in Europe is not usual to get this transmission and it has been a bit hard to get manuals or even the parts for it. Automatic Choice Europe got me the parts and that 24t planetary. But I cannot figure out why is not shifting from 2nd to 3rd. I am now thinking to get a new valve body, but not sure if this is the problem. I have read so many comment and saw videos from US, about this transmission but get more and more confused. So at the moment I am a bit lost.
Forgot to mention that it gives error code P0733 gear ratio error in 3rd
@@iberotransmissoesportugal4445 3rd is the rear servo and the front is 2nd and 5th. Did you air check the servo's after install, pistons are new correct?
@@GaryFerraro if the air test is done through the very small hole on top of it yes, because has I said can’t find manuals or air test information. Yes they are new pistons.
Rebuildng my S bought an ATSG and thankfully it used a whole page to explain the od section differences
Yes, have to be careful with that ratio's are very close
@@GaryFerraro needles to say I will be counting teeth on the new section. (Worn input splines, replacing both parts)
@@edwardmyers1746 What year is yours?
@@GaryFerraro 2004, 38 teeth, late model
