Pruning Petunias // Trimming Back Leggy Annuals

  • When your Petunias start getting long and leggy, the plant has to work so much harder so if you want to help them last longer then it’s a very good idea to give them a prune now. It’s the beginning of August and Petunias will by now have started trailing down, and whilst that looks beautiful, if you look closely you will see that they have turned into really long leggy stems which are having to support what is often only one or two small flowers right at the tips. So it’s a lot of work for Petunias to continue having to sustain this for at least another two months. The way I try and help my Petunias is by giving them a summer prune. Here you will see I cut all the trailing Petunias up level with the top of the planter, then make sure I have removed all the flower’s seed pods, to stop the plant forming seeds and thinking that its flowering job is over. I also reduce alternate remaining stems by about 20% and that way I still have some flowers now, but in a few weeks’ time new growth will have appeared, and also new flowers. In this video I prune the Petunias on two rectangle planters, my Grecian-style planter and my two hanging baskets. I hope you find this video as I show you the method I use.

This was so relaxing to watch. Thank you for the easy tips. I didn’t realize I was only removing the dead flowers and not the seed pods, so my plants weren’t producing many flowers. Next year I will have way prettier and healthier petunias since I know how to take care of them now.

They still look lovely, so well worth doing it if it makes them last longer. I do love petunias, good value in the garden and many nice colours to choose from.

I always find this does work, even though it’s not fun cutting off flowers. Great video!

    Hello
Those petunias turned out beautiful. It's the survival of the fittest plants and tools in my garden too. If they can't stand the 'heat' keep out of the garden.

Excellent video...... my petunias always look leggy comes mid summer, so this information was really helpful. I did a drastic pruning, so now it's wait and see the results. THANKS AGAIN!!!!

Hello there Michael, this will definitely help them. I don’t have any petunias this year, I don’t have much in the way of annuals at all. Apart from zinnias which seem to be really coping great in our heatwave so I’ll definitely plant more of those next year. Have a great weekend 🥰

Good morning mommy892, I’m going to do mine today. I hate it when they grow long and straggly, they never look nice so we might as well bite the bullet and do it 😆 it’s only just July so there’s lots of time to grow back. Don’t forget to fertilise too and you’ll be really pleased with yours in a couple of weeks time. Happy Sunday ♥️

Hello! I'm a mess with plants and have a leggy petunia that was gifted to me this summer. Is it safe to prune it like this (now that autumn is about to start) or is it better to do it in summer? Thanks 🙌🏻

The hanging baskets could have just been trailing petunias therefore that’s what they do “trail” over the sides
