Just as I enjoy watching Jeremy's facial expression while other people are talking; it is always interesting to see Ben squirm with something to say. The depth of knowledge at that table is inspirational. This is my favorite podcast by far. Thank you! Also, I don't mind a bit the swerve from mono color to splashes. If that's what you guys want to talk about, you do it.
Also I’m surprised they didn’t use Goblins as the best example of splash vs two color. When you add black to goblins it adds a lot more to the grindier matchups and allows you to play cards such as W i t h e r i n g B o o n
The question about splashing comes down to what you need that term to accomplish. Words should be useful. Imo, knowing when something is a splash helps talk about a deck's identity. As a deckbuilder it helps you stay focused. As a pilot it helps you know what opening hands you can keep or what effects you can count on having lots of. As an opponent it helps you decide whether the untapped tropical island suggests you should play around spellpierce.
Just want to say THANKS for making great content! I watch all the videos and really enjoy the banter, even though I haven't played paper MTG in years, and I've never even played Canadian Highlander, but I am a Canadian so close enough.
Could you evaluate Hostage Taker? I feel like it’s too slow, but 4 mana for a 2/3 and and an O-ring (for artifacts and creatures) seems pretty good, not to mention being able to cast the card you exile. Don’t know how you would fit this into the show, but I’d love to see it.
I think a splash is made in the mana base; how many sources of that color are you including, are they exclusively attached to lands that already make your base color(s) etc.. I think that's why it makes sense to say UB Reanimator isn't splashing white if you have no white mana to cast your Elesh Norn or Iona.
Deck idea; Mono-blue Psychedelia. Card draw. Things that reward card draw. Things that grant limitless hand size. Things that reward huge hands. *Lab Maniac.* Pls share thoughts
Ok. For me. A mono-X deck does not include any spells that would normally require colours other than X (monoblack might cast spells with orzhov symbols in them, because they can just treat them as black pips.) An X-deck is heavily focused on the colour X but isn't as exclusive about it as a mono-X deck. That's where your splashes come into play. They are generally pretty close to a mono-X deck in list and gameplan, any additional colours are there to give a bit of extra flexibility/bite without altering what the deck does. A two colour deck has the second colour as an integral factor of its gameplan, but both colours don't need to be equally important. It doesn't splash for another colour. A deck is a two colour deck, but it might splash for a third colour. Like an Orzhov deck that includes a touch of blue for some reason. And so forth with three colours vs wedge/shard.
I'm interested in what card Wheeler was thinking about instead of Artificer's Hex. He clearly had an idea for a card and we have something similar in "clawing torment" but that's the only hit I'm getting for 1 mana artifact hate in black
Hey guys! There are other two cards that can deal with artifacts in black, and they are way better! Although not amazing by any means. One of them is Phyrexian Tribute, which I think is fine with Bitterblossom or other tokens. And the other is Xenic Poltergeist! A 3 mana 1/1 that turns artifacts into creatures! :D They're not good, but they are much better than Gate to Phyrexia hahaha
I'm personally against splashes in mono colored decks not from a purity standpoint but the effect it has. Splashing up to five cards will decimate the manabase even if it doesn't lower the consistency of your lands it ups the price and there's no grantee you'll play the cards.
Bear in mind from a Canadian Highlander standpoint they are rarely considering Cost/availability of cards, they are talking from a purely competitive stand point.
The initial Twinflame targets the bird, but the copy created by Dualcaster Mage targets the Dualcaster Mage, and the copy of Dualcaster Mage can create another copy of Twinflame which also targets Dualcaster Mage, so he can create as many copies of Dualcaster Mage as he wants, and all of the copies will have haste, so they're 2/2s that can attack that turn. The reason he has to cast the Birds of Paradise first is that he needs an initial target to be able to cast the first Twinflame.
I think there's a difference between "mono" and "colour that splashes X". Even if you're using one card of a different colour that is no longer mono, because mono literally means Only this, no other. It's like calling something "black splashing green" is seen as taboo or something that we will try and justify calling it mono. I think it's a linguistic fallacy more than an actual technical issue, though.
oh also, it should be noted, that what stephan bard did is really poor form, and he should have been reprimanded for it. don't intentionally draw games.
"Just because a deck plays cards that aren't red doesn't make it not mono-red" - Alex on an episode of Friday nights.
Yeah, everyone knows lands are colorless.
I came here hoping this quote would be posted and was not disappointed

"Why play a mono colour deck?"
"Great question Serge, because they slam dunk."
Every time you see a gargoyle creature in Magic, you have to ask yourself if it seems designed to divert rainwater away from masonry walls.

Yo I think I got a crush on Wheeler
Oh you too?
Get in line

Just want to say i love this show and hope you never stop
Ben with the "grotesque" comment just slayed me within seconds of starting the podcast. 🤣
Suggestion:
rUG = Simic doormat
RuG = Gruul doormat
RUg = Izzet doormat
So does that make
bUG = Simic insect
BuG = Golgari insect
BUg = Dimir insect
I love engagement and watching the premier lands pilot and the second most premier lands pilot
Serge told me that I was going to get mad but the only thing I can get mad about IS HOW MUCH I AM ENGAGED BY THIS SHOW!
I’m losing my shit at “show them a hand of 7 counterspells and hope they concede
Okay. I want to build around that powerful combo at the end there. Wooooow
Following you guys since the start, keep up the great contet. I love it! :)
“Shizo Brickhouse” 10/10
duh duuuuh duh
I love the odd mono color names, most recently the mono red jund in standard.
More north 100!!!

I've played it a bunch in BUG midrange and it's been pretty good.
WOW Artificer's Hex + Bloodthirsty Blade is an iteresting combo. Maybe not for 1v1, but it IS interesting.
Is reaper king a mono-white card?
I started cackling just at Wheeler's intro.
Tower of the magistrate seems fun against the aggro version of grafted wargear. Not so much vs the crats one though.

I am excited for this podcast
Since I have nothing important to say but want to ENGAGE with this content. Love the video guys
the shizo brickhouse was gold lol

Ben told me to not prove Serge wrong, then immediately tells me to do the exact opposite? I’m very irrationally angy and engaged!

....warp artifact?
i know it's not highlander related but can i have a cube episode please? thanks
I'd be down

Classic blunder, forgetting about the *sic* Phyrexian Tribute
If you like all in black cards let me introduce you to Kaervek's Spite
splashing in the Watery Grave
Mono Black being at the bottom still makes me sad... The struggles it has is why I have to play "mono" black, green splash Assasins trophey and such
I'm impressed there's a format in which Mono White is better than Mono Black, honestly.
The upper lower case usage is more a take from bdsm community. Weird but true.
i dont understand the powerful magic... he won by having 3 0/1 birds on his last turn, 2 of them with haste? i feel like i missed something
Twin flame and dualcaster mage create infinite hasty mages
The initial Twinflame targets the bird, but the copy created by Dualcaster Mage targets the Dualcaster Mage, and the copy of Dualcaster Mage can create another copy of Twinflame which also targets Dualcaster Mage, so he can create as many copies of Dualcaster Mage as he wants, and all of the copies will have haste, so they're 2/2s that can attack that turn. Gate to Phyrexia gets too much hate
N100: Makes fun of nonsensical deck names
Also N100: Plays Sorensen
Sorenson is the last name of the person who created the deck
Black has karn, both ulamogs, the new sword, nivs disk to deal with artifacts 😋 thats 5 answers, lets not discuss cmc.
Can't be the target of spells or abilities is Yu-Gi-Oh rules text, has our Yu-Gi-Oh talk bled into your mind Wheeler?
