Romulus, its Destruction and Deceit

  • The Romulan home planet of Romulus was a hub of political schemes and ploys from the Star Empire, not only just from the Tal Shiar. But the planet itself was a veritably verdant veneer over a darkened core.

There's beta canon that the reason for Romulan withdrawl during the Federations "Golden Age" was that they were fighting a all out war against another species on the opposite boarder from the Federation.
They couldn't afford to have a war on two fronts and were in fact worried that if their two rivals learnt of each other they could join forces and overwhelm the Empire.
And thus the Romulans only started bothering the Federation again once they had beaten their other rivals.

The fact that a sense of paranoia was hanging over the general populace is evidence in and of it self that the civilian population's lifestyle, goals and motivations differed significantly from that of the ruling class. On top of that the very fact that the upper classes felt the _need_ to create and employ an organization like the Tal Shiar is further proof of that.

Do an in-universe history of pop culture and why almost every episode references anything made in the 19th and early 20th century and before and why a version of Magic Carpet Ride by Steppenwolf in First Contact felt so novel.
We all know why in our universe. Rights, public domain works, etc made it easier for us to relate to characters.
Maybe WWIII somehow wiped out all pop culture between the 1940s and 2026? Maybe we just somehow got tired of producing shows, making music, and writing and just became purely consumers of existing older works? I dunno.

The way Romulan society seems to work, with their various castes and classes, I wouldn't be surprised if the city's area is exactly as depicted on screen, with the balance of the volume being in the vertical plane. High society and public commons on the upper levels, with the middle, lower, and slave classes generally living closer to/below ground level as "appropriate". I'm sure the Remans would probably even prefer the lower levels with their light sensitivity(and you just know that some of the better behaved Remans would be kept on the homeworld to do the shittiest of the shit jobs, thanking their lucky stars they weren't in the mines....).

Roman mythology i assume you mean in universe. ? If so . I think it was earth reference. They had a twin capital system. And an imperial empire and they probably named them with that in mind . Like Vulcan is also from mythology. Im sure it has a different translation in the original language. Same with earth or terra ( home / terrain /earth ) your right about the reunification. I always thought perhaps the Vulcans had a large refuge population that grew into a major population over time or the succeeding romulan state merged eventually. The Vulcans were partly responsible for romulus destruction or they delayed assistance. A reason nero was so angry with them . Spock and picard took to long persuading them . I believe spock ended up stealing the technology to try help .
